    This is some of the best sci-fi ever done.

    You know I think tripods just might be the greatest tv show ever made and to say that it was made in the 80s is staggering

    Parts of the underground scenes are filmed in the Dinorwig pump storage power station in North Wales.

    I love it when the angry Master says, "How can there be danger in that, boy?" Just sounds funny.

    Will in both series had a great monologue at one point. Here is his second one with the Cognosk. The first was with the Black Guard in Episode 13.

      +MaMa Matchless It just sounded so funny to me, the way it sounded with the anger and echo.

      +MaMa Matchless What does the Master say right before that? A little hard to get about the danger of the Cognosk?

    I'm a huge fan of the books but I still like the liberty that the BBC took with the 2nd book. I was telling a friend of mine that I think the Matrix writers got the idea of the Architect from the cognosk.

    I liked the way they altered the book through the BBC series. The books are great but the BBC series had such a visceral 80's. It's really a shame they didn't make season 3. I've read the books 3 time and seen the series twice. Really not sure why the books are not a bigger hit in the U.S. I caught on to the series through Boys Life magazine; then I was one of the only people in my class in middle school to read the books.

      +vista7 They had to because some of the stuff in the book wouldn't work on film. How could they show the slaves sweating so much and stooped over all the time?

    There's a hell of a lot of series 2 that isn't the book. The BBC took artistic license to a new level (or depth) with this series...

      True, its a pity they didn't make 3rd Series.

    • @sha11235
      @sha11235 10 років тому +1

      Well, because of what is in the book can't be done on screen, they had to change it a lot. But they did make changes with the first book too.

      sha11235 in fairness I don't thing that's why they didn't make a 3rd series. They could certainly do it now, but they'd have to keep to the good storyline and not make it all "CGI" Fights etc.

      +soeffingwhat That wasn't why. It had to do with the suits upstairs not liking the spending money. It was bullshit.

      The Tripods was cancelled as part of Michael Grade’s purging of what he regarded as expensive sci-fi series that only appealed to a limited audience (Doctor Who was another such casualty). He preferred to spend less money for a wider audience on programmes like Noel’s House Party, The Krankies, etc. Red Dwarf started later on in this era and only got away with it because they said they were a comedy show and not sci-fi (and also because they’d already blown the special effects budget right at the start of production, which meant the BBC had to let them make it or be accused of wasting licence payers’ money).
      Yes there’s a lot of license with the book in both series but I gotta think season 2 is better than the book; unlike season 1, which was far too padded.

    I prefer series 2 to series1 they was too many esp where nothing happens in series 1 but tell me if the show and the books are quite different then are the books worth reading as despite having seen the show

      +Tony Smout There was stuff in both series where stuff happens. The books are different in many ways. First of all, it is narrated by Will, so we see everything thru him. You cannot do that in a series like this. Also, his relationship with Eloise in the book is not a romance, since they are much younger. In the book, the capping is not at 16 but 13. Also, since the city was leaden, you couldn't show the staggering of the slaves too easily. It was one thing to show them older with gray or white hair, but not stooped over.

    Overall, Series 2 is more thrilling and gritty than Series 1. However, it's also fragmented, incoherent and inconsistent. In fact, rather a large number of questions are posed by elements which seem oddly inappropriate given the background's texture; such as, "Why is there a 1980s discotheque / bar for slaves in the Tripod City"? A lot just doesn't add up, and it has a lot do, I'm sure, with the replacement of Alick Rowe as the screenplay adaptor following the first series.
    What the BBC did was essentially to recklessly open up the throttle and floor it, storywise, with the inevitable result that the budget-hungry, rough-riding series then shook itself to bits and broke down, to be discarded and abandoned by the executives.
    You can go for 'max power' with a serial ONLY when you're ending it; look at what the writers of 'Blake's Seven' did with the final episode. But Auntie Beeb had a responsibility to carry on a story arc to its proper conclusion in adapting a trilogy and by their heavy-handed efforts were unfaithful to the baby and shook it to death. For shame.

      Andrew Givens What I liked or preferred about Series 1 was the "suspense" about it regarding the Travels and getting to the White Mountains while avoiding the Tripods at all costs. I would agree about Series 2. Also, if you had to wear Helmets in order to Breathe in the Masters Air, then you'd likely be wearing an Airtight allover Body Suit like an Astronaut and not have Bare Arms and Legs. Our Whole Body actually "Breathes" through our Skin, not just through the Mouth and Nose. That's why if there are accidents involving Tar spillage on the Body, it totally prevents the Skin from Breathing and must be removed in emergency asap...That said I still like Series 2, I was fascinated that the Power Master was Red in Colour and all the others were Green (Hell I was a Kid when I first saw it).... Such a shame they ended it like they did.

      I guess they felt there should be some sort of relaxation place that looked 20th Century liked. The idea of the city was to make it like NYC.

    • @sha11235
      @sha11235 9 років тому +2

      +Andrew Givens They changed the city because some of the stuff in the book couldn't be shown on screen so easily, like the leaden atmosphere. You can put it in your mind when you read it, but not on screen where it would look silly.
