- "Hands Clean" from the 2002 album "Under Rug Swept" was released as the album's first single on 4 February 2002. The narrative voice of the song alternates between verses, and is about hebephilia. Morissette reportedly said in an interview to US Weekly that the song is about an affair she had with a man who was 29 years old when she was 14. Their relationship lasted for five years.
According to another interview, given to Rex Rutkoski and published in the music magazine The Inside Connection, Alanis explained "I did it for the sake of my being liberated at long last. Whether you call it statutory rape or inappropriate behavior by an adult - it doesn't matter. I felt at the time I had only two choices - I pick either working with this person or not doing music at all. Hopefully some 16-year-old can think of me for even 10 milliseconds and realize they're not alone or crazy."
Some people have speculated that the relationship referenced is the same one that served as the basis for her earlier hit, "You Oughta Know".

Oh, wow ! you're right. It was clear from the beginning of the song and I cant believe I missed all those clues for so many years. Even after I read about it I didn't realise the song was written from the perpetrator's points of view. 🤯 I was always thinking she was groomed to a degree that she was feeling what she describes in that song, but I was wrong. How did you find out?
@@jf6591 I guess i never really listened to it, like really absorbed the lyrics. I always very stupidly thought it was a song about two people that just loved each other but couldnt be together. Damn. I was soooo wrong.
@@jf6591 Its incredible tho how it places ALL the blame squarely on her. I think she was like 15 or 16 dating a MUCH older guy. Another case like this was Celine dion. She was like 14 dating her producer.

The lyrics of this song are absolutely chilling but so well written.
Will never tire of hearing Alanis sing. Classy gal. Pop singers take notes. No auto tune for Alanis. Her live performances are always good.

This girl just seemed to appear one day and delivered this song and, to me, it is one of the greatest pieces of rock/pop ever conceived. It startles and amazes every time.

She didn't just "appear with this song". She was popular many years before this song.
I used to sit in my fort in my attic and listen to Jagged Little Pill over and over on cassette tape :) It was my favorite tape I had.

Hardly any reverb or delay on the vocals. She hits every note. Testament to a great singer.

I had surgery and I didn't think it worked. I thought i was dying for months. I watched her documentary, then started listening to all her music, now this song brings me to tears every time.
