- Russia has confirmed a new prime minister after the lower house of Parliament approved Vladimir Putin's choice for the job and the President formally appointed him. Mikhail Mishustin was head of the country's federal tax service. He was put forward as Putin's choice for Prime Minister, after Dmitry Medvedev and his entire government resigned on Wednesday. In his state of the nation address, President Putin had called for political reform giving more power to the Duma. There's speculation Putin will take on a new role when his current presidential term ends in 2024.

I hope Putin might be prime minister at least after Mishustin becomes president. The Duma will always listen to Putin and that is why he limited the role of president.

In two of those countries at least they are officially an occupying force. Iraq just passed a parliamentary request for the Americans to withdraw all their armed forces from Iraqi territory, and, although Syria never invited the Americans in, they set up bases there and are now staying "for the oil", in Trump's words. Medvedev was a weak prime minister and president. Mishustin seems to be a much better candidate, he completely overhauled the tax system and removed much of the corruption and tax-evasion out of that system.
We'll have to wait and see how he goes as prime minister.
