in legends the Spore Medic enemies spread netherspores that make the Overworld breathable for the piglins and heal wounded piglin units, so the air is still harmful to them without those spores but the medics give them the ability to survive out there.

I think i have another reason for the blue portal what if mojang decided to add a portal in 1.22 u will be able to ignite the portal and seeing the wardens stuff are blue so think of it they got lost entered a wrong portal grabbed loot(the blue cube) and got back to the overworld

I think we can assume that, like Legends, it was before the air in the Overworld became harmful to piglins.
Maybe they defeat the piglin by using the blue thing and turn piglin into zombie piglin
