      Im thinking about buying the R5. Are all the bugs worked out like overheating, short battery life and sd card issues that some people were complaining about? If you are mainly a stills shooter and the 5d mark 4 is working fine, is there a reason to upgrade? My main hesitaion is expense of the RF lenses.

    I also just updated to the R5 from a 5DIII. I have a lot of EF lenses (50 1.2 L, 85 1.2 L, 24-105 f4 L, 70-300 DO, 35 1.8), and several flashes, and was glad to be able to use them. Got an RF 24-240 and 14-35 f4 for travel/landscape. What an absolutely amazing upgrade. I was planning to wait for the R5II but have a trip coming up. I feel like I got into a flagship camera that is beyond what I need. I was excited to get 45mp images and have not been disappointed. Got in at $500 off and a free grip so I feel like I got good value for money and am happier with the older EF lenses and their ability to focus. My one concern is that the R5 has the older style hot shoe. That actually works for me now (I have 3 600 RT flashes and the E3-RT transmitter), but in a few years I might have issues because the R5 hot shoe isn't supported anymore.

      Congrats on the new camera. As a former 5DIII owner myself the R5 is a huge upgrade in image quality. I wouldn't worry too much about the new hot shoe there aren't many accessories that take advantage of that new shoe.

      @@alexbillian2846 I still use the 24-105 f4 as my “normal” lens for general photography. The results have been great. I like the constant f4. I have been surprised at the sharpness of the 24-240. I am using it as a general travel lens, and did some flower closeups (not macro) with it. I am very pleased, though I wish it were faster.

      Are you getting cropped images still when you use an EF lens on your R5? If so, what are your thoughts on that? Thinking of making the jump, but I have EF glass, and (as we know), lenses cost all of the monies. :)

      @@marcuszellous5934 I don't notice cropping at all on EF lenses with the adapter. I could be wrong, but I don't think that's an issue. Why “in 2023?” This camera is so new and is the most recent version of the R5 line. Pretty soon people are going to release videos called “should you by the [insert camera name] in June?!” about a camera that dropped in March🤣

    • @khay2210
      @khay2210 Рік тому +7

      The reason for this is to know if there are better cameras out there at the moment for the price, especially for the price and considering the fact that the r5 mkii is coming out soon, it’s not that the R5 is an old or a bad camera, tbh the r5 will still be an amazing camera in the next 5 years. But it might be reasonable for some people to wait for the mkii. Especially with features like the new hot shoe, no record limit, dedicated photo and video button and the list goes on. Now these features may be useful for some people, everyone to be honest, but it may not be that important for some people to wait for the mk ii especially considering the fact that the camera might be a bit more expensive.

Now that I had it in the studio for some months, I agree with all your points specially regarding photos I have never had this pleasure to shoot coupled with this amazing increase in quality. Regarding video, even though the image quality is outstanding, the overheating is still an issue, and when you are a pro you cant play with that. I will get soon the atomos V or V+ to bypass this issue, otherwise I am afraid I could switch to sony ( I really dont want)

      I'm shooting field sports with a 7D mkii. Its great. Low ISO IQ and the AF performance is superb. I use a 1DX ii for low light indoor sports, but now purchased a R6 ii, which is the best of all worlds with its 1.6 x crop mode (we shoot jpg for print sales), and superb IQ and high ISO performance when you need it. My 7D ii must be at around 400k on the shutter count and it still chugs along.

    I currently use a 5D MkIII and have a lot of EF L series lenses, which has made me reluctant to move to mirrorless due to the changed lens mount (Canon has a track record for this - anyone remember their FD lenses from 35mm film days?) Anyway, I have reached the point where I want to upgrade from my 5DII, and was steadfastly looking at a 5D IV. However, recognising the future is mirrorless, I finally made the jump and have just ordered an EOS R5 with adapter. Yes, I realise it is a few years old at this point, and likely to be superceded in the not too distant future, but the R5 is several steps ahead of my 5D III so I am glad to hear that it is still very much a force to be reckoned with in the current camera market.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  9 місяців тому

      Hopefully you're loving your new camera. I also have a good collection of EF L lenses and to be honest they work perfectly on the new R system bodies. I haven't noticed any difference in AF performance from DSLR to Mirrorless. To be perfectly honest there is no reason to upgrade your glass if you don't want to. You can even setup your R5 to work like a DSLR if you like the focus and recompose method. But to be honest once you get used to using eye tracking you'll be wondering how you ever got along without it.

    I would assume that the R5 (and the long expected R1 flagship) will be released in Q1 of 2024! Keep in mind that both cameras will be used at the olympic games in Paris 2024. Canon won't release those cameras too short before this date! And IMHO if I'd like to buy an R5 I would wait until the R5 II comes out! 😇

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  Рік тому +3

      That point totally makes sense. I don't think Canon would release the R1 after the Olympic games. Also waiting till after the R5 II comes out to buy an R5 would be a smart play. That's when you'll get best value for money. Thanks for the comment.

      Having just recently traded in my R6, for an R5, I give you this advice, The R6 is a fantastic all around camera. However, for bird photography, you need cropping abilities that won’t degrade if you do crop. This is a weakness of the R6. The R5 excels in birding photography. For your needs, I’d go for the R6. You will really enjoy taking portrait photos with it.

    • @vaskoobscura_

      In a one word answer absolutely. The R5 sensor is the best sensor Canon has ever put in a camera you can expect to see more details and sharpness out of your lens then ever before. Now with that being said it is important to note that the R5 sensor is a demanding high resolution sensor and to take full advantage of it you'll need to use good quality glass. If you're shooting with low end EF lenses the imperfections in the lens will show. Hope that helps.

    Just a note on the 30min video limit, it's applied to all photography cameras that shoot video due to an additional 5.4% in tariffs determined by the ITA.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  7 місяців тому +1

      You would be right if it was 2001. That tariff was the reason a 30min video recording limit was implemented in hybrid cameras, however that tariff was nulled a long time ago. It doesn't exist anymore but Canon used it as an excuse so they could upsell you on cinema cameras. Unfortunately for Canon consumers are smart and simply switched brands. Canon has lost market share because of that silly choice. Thankfully the new cameras don't have that 30min limit.

    I hav intension to purchase one, just wonder the old EF lens will perform well on R5 since lot of reviews suggest that the resolving power from DSLR lens might be outdated for the mirroless R series.

    • @vaskoobscura_
      @vaskoobscura_  Рік тому +1

      Yes old Canon EF lenses work like normal on the RF mount. DSLR lenses should work fine with the R5 it's the old film era lenses that might not produce the best results. Regarding resolution the 45mp sensor is demanding and you need good glass to get the sharpest images. But it all depends on where you show the images. If you shrink your 45mp image for web or social media it looks amazing. But if you're making big prints you'll want to buy some sharp lenses. Hope that helps.

      Buffer, and screen blackout/lag would be the biggest issues. The R5 is just not fast enough for high speed sports. It really comes down to the pace of play in the sport you are shooting and the expectations you have on your camera. I'm not in the sports photography game anymore but there are some videos out there from professional sports photography shooters talking about the limitations of using the R5 for sports and action photography. I would suggest watching those to get the info from the people who use these cameras in those environments. Hope that helps.

    After years using the R5 I can say the joystick is no longer needed for my workflow at least.
    They will probably add the joystick and maybe EVF with eye tracking like the R3?
    And lastly, I have no desire to upgrade to the mark 2 because it’s already more than enough camera than I could ever need.
    However! The only thing canon could do or has to do in order for me to upgrade is add the screen that comes on the Sony A7R5! Otherwise it’s not worth it to me, the updated AF on the R50 feels better than the R5 sadly but yea that’s my thoughts on this.
    The R1 would be nice but I love having the option to have a battery grip attached and it will most likely be crazy expensive at launch so if they come out with a new firmware that takes away record time limits I’ll be happy to buy another mark 1 R5!

      I'd love to get my hands on a Sony and test it out. The Sony A7RV would be the direct competitor to the R5. It's two years newer and has more advanced features. Canon is countering with the R5 Mark II this summer. Both systems are great. If you're trying to decide between them I'd suggest going to a camera store and holding them in your hands. Go with the one that feels good in your hands. :)
