What is the history of LEAKS in major film franchises, and how have they changed the way movies are made and marketed? For this special Invosstigation, Erik Voss rewinds the clocks two years ago, in August 2021, when the first promo footage for Spider-Man No Way Home came out and the internet exploded with rumors and possible leaks. One particular piece of leaked footage was different than the rest: high-quality 8K footage of Andrew Garfield on a blue-screen set, with no watermark, and no explanation of its origin. Is there any evidence that Sony might have leaked this themselves? Or are we diving too deep into conspiracy territory?

@@serwinzzalot9989 honestly, I kind of want to see a studio so some ARGs to market the film or like setup some websites that exist in the movie or series world that we can access like the Dark Knight or Cloverfield. Those kinds of marketing will always buzz on the internet.
@@serwinzzalot9989 doomsday in the trailer only confirmed the worst - but doomsday in the movie at all was the real problem, whether it was kept a secret or not. just having batman vs superman was already rushing things, with the lazy crowbarred introduction of the rest of the justice league on top. dc was trying to force 10 years' worth of development in a single movie
Still very unreal, that these two were in No Way Home. They made the movie 100x better.
The respect paid to Toby and Andrew’s Spider-Men in No Way Home is probably what makes it the best thing to come out of Phase 4. And even when they aren’t in the movie, it was still super good.
Most of Phase 4 was a little lackluster due to real world events, but Spider-Man No Way Home was not one of them.
I actually think they ruined the film.🫣

To be fair, that could easily be explained as being a stunt with a stuntman on set in the suit.

@@madtitan0825 Yeah, I know… I’m just saying that an actor could easily explain that away by saying it was a stuntman under the mask for those shots if he wanted to cover or lie.
I’m just saying that there is a pretty believable and easy cover for that particular slip up…
@@echo_z319 Yeah I know. I just meant that if Tom wanted to cover and undo some damage he could’ve easily given a plausible explanation like saying that certain stunts have a stuntman under the mask and he wasn’t there for that particular shot. That’s believable to 99% of the public.
What's mindblowing to me is that it's a set leak from THE MAIN CAMERA. We're used to seeing stuff shot by snoopy fans/TMZ or a phone photo by a crew member. But this was the Raw foorage from the main camera pre VFX/editing being released. Where VFX and editng would aloow the footage to get handed off to WAY more people to leak.
I hope they don't do this next time. As much as I love No Way Home, I'd like to be surprised when legacy characters come back.
It's part of the culture now. Look at the Dead Pool 3 leaks already. Legacy characters seems like a huge part of the MCU current, why? Because of Secret Wars even without knowing leaks like comic readers already knew that people will be snapped in Infinity wars, secret wars is almost expected they bring everyone back. But like Fiege said even though we knew characters would be snapped it was still shocking to see in IW.
The reactions for NWH were already extremely good despite the leaks, imagine how insane they would of been if the multiverse never would've leaked?

As for the rest, yeah, no one expected Holland's Spiderman to stay dead. Pretty sure you crossed up Endgame with Secret Wars in making your point though.
Because I wanted to be surprised I basically convinced my self unless Disney/sony confirms something the leaks r fake and I’m not getting my hopes up and it allowed me to completely enjoy the moment when they both showed up

The audience reaction in my theater for Garfield and Maguire showing up were on par with, if not louder than, Cap’s Mjolnir moment reaction in my theater. It was awesome, they both were
The proof of how good this movie was, by the time Andrew appears, I had totally forgotten I was waiting/hoping for it to happen. So I still got a pure surprise.
Yeah the plot doesn’t need them until you realise all hope was lost and they just gave the film new life
I absolutely think it was done on purpose. It happens all the time in music. I know someone who works in artist marketing who literally has a group of fan pages she gives info to in order to start rumors. I worked for a subscription box company that did the same (selective leaks to trusted fan pages). I wouldn’t be surprised if movie studios do the same kind of thing. My guess is that all the buzz about whether or not it was real convinced a lot of people that the rumors might actually be true, and they want to see for themselves. Free marketing!
It makes more sense that it was damage control though, especially given the timing.
Generally we see a leak, few days later we might get another snippet of that leak, another leak, something, but this time we got the blurry pic and the 8K version within a remarkably short time and once the story went live it was everywhere and easy to find.
Makes more sense that Sony figured on unofficially confirming Garfield rather than trying to put the toothpaste back in the tube. The denial made more news than the announcement would have.
It was a good thing they didn’t officially appear in the trailers. It made the whole thing a mystery (at least for me).
While watching it I would wait for them to pop up and doubting it the same time.
I first read about the possibility of Andrew and Tobey a year ahead of the movie’s release (around the same time Dr. Octopus was announced in November 2020). Not to forget that given Far From Home’s plot and Spiderverse, they were already toying with the idea since 2018.
Ever since Far From Home came out, to me the craziest idea was to have Matt Murdock appear. Then things went bigger with Tobey and Andrew. That entire year was rumors and rumors and leaks and leaks. The day the Andrew video was leaked was mass hysteria, but the day the photo of the three and a photo of Matt Murdock were leaked was the confirmation, “this was really happening”.
I love the idea of like someone confessing to like a murder on their death bed. Some random person from the VFX crew on No Way Home is just like “I…I leaked Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield’s appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home”

I still think Andrew Garfield should keep claiming that he's not in No Way Home. Because really, he's not. That's just great double with photoshop.
i think its also worth noting that around the trailer release, it was rumored that sony pushed for either andrew and tobey to be in the trailer/or have the multiverse theme in the marketing and marvel studios wanted it pitched to the public as a dr. strange vs spider-man (tom) movie. makes sense sony would leak it

I remember watching this opening day, and everyone literally stood up and SCREAMED when the spider-men came on screen.
Investigation on the whole Henry Cavill thing with him leaving as Superman/The Witcher? It be nice to have all the facts put together instead of me reading about it in different weird articles…
I remember all the "leaks" of Doctor Strange 2 that hyped the movie in insane levels only to be a blunder. So yes i believe they did that in purpose to sell those tickets..

I will say I just started watching New Rockstar, and the Deep Dive, and what I saw is so informative, interesting, entertaining and pure fun. I am also a fan of the MCU. I have watch Ant Man and the Wasp Quantumania as well as your deep dive. I just got Scott Langs offical biography about Scott Lang himself Look Out for the Little Guy.
I just thought it would be a very interesting deep dive, getting to literally go inside a heroes mind

correction...raw footage is not watermarked because then the artist couldnt composite it...the ref video is water marked...this was likely a leak from a roto house that had access to the full res working footage in 8k

Another self referencial joke from Sony was in Far From Home, when Happy Hogan told Spidey that his password was "password", obviously a reference to the Sony hack.
Or the fact that Happy’s never been good at his job as head of security

As much as I believed the legacy Spider-Men will show up, the screenplay of NWH made me settled for the no show honestly. They showed up exactly when I felt, its too late in the story for them to surface...and then boom! It was the pinnacle of bait and switch for me.

I'm just here with a smile because you did bring up Corridor Crew toward the end but not their video pointing out that the footage couldn't have been a "deepfake" without being one of a quality that we still can only dream of.
Watching this video made me sad. I loved it so much, it reminded me that nothing lasts forever and eventually Erik won’t be doing these videos! For now I’m going to enjoy the crap out of them! Keep it up Erik! Please just don’t burn out, take time to reflect on and analyze yourself too! ❤

I watched just the teaser for nwh, stayed away from any trailers, clips, new rockstar breakdowns etc, although the assumption was they’d appear since doc oc was in the teaser, I still went in having seen very little and the movie was such a great experience

Marvel should get whoever was behind the Avatar leaks. I mean when Avatar was re-released in theaters before way of water, there were scenes from the second film at the end of it, and if anyone posted them online, they were taken down really fast.
I like how the audience reactions in this video were only like, 10% of how my theater reacted 😂
WB pushed for a police investigation into who leaked a DVD quality version of the Dark Knight the same weekend it opened… until it turned out that it was leaked by WB’s own publicity team in order to increase buzz & boost second weekend sales

14:36 while yes, the offline footage is watermarked. The plates we work with are not watermarked. You couldn't complete a shot if there was a watermark on it. Not that I'm saying it was a vfx artist. but not having a watermark isn't evidence of that.

Studios have been caught leaking movie details before and it’s usually something that was supposed to be a surprise for fans. It’s great marketing that is free.
Before even watching the video, my only thought is that they must have due to the resolution of the leak AND the shot of Andrew that we got was the exact same shot we see in the movie.

The thing is : No Way Home wasn’t shot at all with an 8K capable camera, and there aren’t that many 8K cinema camera on the market right now nor was there in 2021 or whenever they shot this SO I wonder if the footage has been upscaled or what.
If not for Tobey, Andrew & all the old beloved characters return No way home would definitely made a box office of less than 900 million, Most people knew the old characters were returning so it was huge success!
Man, I was waiting for you to mention it but you didn't! the Brazilian trailer in which the lizard is kicked in the face, moves its neck but there is no one "apparently" kicking it. to me, Sony knew this was going to spread, it was specifically only in one country and a country known for its memes. That was my point of certainty, that both the lizard and the 8k photo of Andrew were intentional and I thought it was brilliant, brilliant marketing. We created high expectations and almost certainty but without it being "officially" revealed.
No one actually thought spiderman was staying dead. Tom was just having fun with that one.
