This channel really is a treasure. I've just found it a few days ago, and listen while I'm sketching. As a professional gamer with little to no time, I've really taken art back into my life again, and the motivation I've gained from this channel has had me improve more in 3 days than I have in the on and off years I've been dabbling in drawing. Currently my gaming is my art (used to be skateboarding as a kid), and the drive I've regained is something that only a person with such passion and wisdom could inspire in people. I aspire to be as kind, compassionate, and giving as Adam is. Keep on doing what you do, and keep on creating this videos, I feel they'll change many people's lives for the better

despite my art being on the more surreal side, i've never been an outwardly expressive person. I've always been rather quiet and reserved and not for any negative reason, it's just how i am. That being said i get very emotional about my art, my capabilities and my sense of creativity and imagination. I see photos of people's art stations and they look really neat and full of stuff and despite being an adult with the ability to display whatever i want, i just kind of don't and i wonder why that is sometimes. I like to wear very boring clothes and not the art i make, despite loving it.
Maybe you're just built different
I used to be like that as well, then I got my hands on some neat trinkets by happenstance and discovered an unventured aspect of myself. I personally recommend trying something similar, just to see if it sparks anything (if you haven't already), and if not, it's nothing to stress over. Everybody's got their quirks, do what makes you happy.
I'm looking forward to having a description of my "art" right now I'm at the stage of turning circles into spheres.
Thanks for the reminder, mate. For the past six months, my living situation is such that I don't have my own space. I don't have a space to work, heck, I don't even have a desk, so I drag my art supplies out to the kitchen table every time I sit down to draw. It could be worse, but it's not a very inspiring space to work in. But I have a Spitfire. You see, I have this deeply rooted passion for classic aircraft, and much like you described with the rings, it's something that resonates and connects. Something that unlocks and fuels something within me. And a dear friend, a model painter, painted a Supermarine Spitfire for me, my favourite airplane. It usually sits atop the bookshelf where I can hardly see it, gathering dust. Sometimes I take it down just for the desire to look at it and wipe the dust off the wings, and it always, inexplicably, lights a little fire in my heart. Perhaps it is time to start dragging my Spitfire along with the art supplies to the kitchen, at least until my living situation is such that I have my own space that really pours fuel onto the creative fire.
Unfortunately were I live, in Italy, there's no such thing as salvation army etc, thrift stores are rare and usually only have stuff they're sure they can resell and end up being expensive.
Not only that but the job situation here is dire, and as you can imagine I don't have a job. Obviously my tastes are the lethal mix: gothic + art deco. So expensive + expensive. But I'm glad I've always been the type to customize stuff and do it myself, because my bullet journal's theme for this year is exactly that one: gothic art deco.
Sometimes you don't have money or the means to have what you like, but sometimes even a small thing like this journal can bring so much happiness! Remember to find yourself as much as possible, even in little cheap and simple stuff~

This video brought me back to a few years ago when I was at a commercial wedding dress store. We were there for a couple hours and I was trying different dresses on, and each one that I put on, I would look at myself, shake my head and say "No, no. This just isn't me." When I got home that night I looked in my closet and saw this vintage costume dress that someone had given me about a year prior. It had been sitting in my closet gathering dust. I put on the dress, and immediately was flooded with ideas. My mother and I spent countless hours tailoring and customizing that dress and I loved it. I still do! Not only did I love that dress more than any of the pricy dresses I had tried on at the store but it was practically free in comparison. I think we spent less than a couple hundred dollars customizing it. And you know, this might sound cliche but that dress is priceless to me. Instead of sitting in a store for countless hours, trying to pick out the "perfect" mass produced dress, I got to spend that time with my mom, creating an artistic piece that I got to wear to my wedding.
I think I needed to be reminded of that wedding dress. I'd been feeling so... bland and soulless for so long that I forgot what it meant to really create something, to tailor myself like I tailored my wedding dress. Thank you Adam.
i always had a plain enviroment because of my circumstances dont allow me to , recently i have been writing a character and their enviroment , how their house is made of glass the stores of the town are upstairs and you need to look up to find them or how the world is basically what you think of as opposite , and i realized that this is how i want to live like, where things don't make sense but theres a structure to see in , how i want my place to be filled with windows and plants that hang or how i want the colours of my house to reflect how deep you are in the house , and this put me more into perspective and thought
hearing you talk makes me more confident in being an artist and achieving my dream to be one . thank you
This topic reminded me of a time not even a year ago when I decided to use my remote work privileges and just wander around the art noveau part of our capital city. Just walking inbetween the beautifully sculpted facades was a feast for the eyes, but I wandered into one art gallery hidden away into the inner courtyard of one such building. There, I saw a decent enough art display, but what drew me the most was this one glass cabinet with silverware from 1906 or so. It had this fascinating half-glass, half-silver pitcher, with a simple, but very striking ornamental pattern, with the central piece being three diamonds arrayed in a V shape, each with a pillar stretching down from it. This simple design set my mind racing and provided me with the perfect crest for a class of nobility in the novel I'm working on; such a simple, yet elegant little detail that helped define the "look" of those people. And it's all from a simple old pitcher!
Decorating my workspace with items and accessories of that era is something I absolutely need to do, as I have found that they definitely set you into the right mindset to create something similar. Thank you for this reminder!
As an uni art student with almost zero budget, I resonate with this talk with my whole soul. The way me and my friends unconsciously eye what's near the trash dumps when walking, the way we get lost in mountains of random pieces of cloth in the weekly town market... My wardrobe was a woodstick hanging parallel to the roof for a couple years, and everytime i looked at my weird little environment i felt like Yeah! This IS me! And it's constantly changing and it's beautiful!! And we use to bring each other "suggestion" objects among friends, and i's always a joyful experience because they are getting to know you and they actively push you forward into your own self creation.
I discovered this channel a couple weeks ago, playing these videos as background while i work in my art. This has been raising me from my emotional lowpoint and i can't thank you enough for this. I'm remodelling my brain room with the help of your voice. Every single video sparks in me the same joy as having a high quality conversation with a close friend,,,,Thank you so much

Man, i find this talk soooooooo incredibly inspiring since i've fantasize about this idea of living your art but haven't fully committed to it. And you know what? I'm ready to start
I've been doing it right then! I surround myself with the realms I enjoy painting.
I have this knitted cardigan I found this autumn in a thrift shop.. on the last day before turnover, waiting there for two weeks, and the second I saw it I fell for it. I love it! It looks old fashioned, and it's so colorful (all shades of reddish purple and light blue and off white and brown..) and it's so tightly patterned, and with these brass buttons. I think I wore it like 1/3rd of the time this winter, I never would have thought something like this will be my vibe but now my horizons are widened, hah. Turns out I like intricate patterns in cardigans.
I am unsure how that connects to my art sense, though maybe it's the same thing that I love about wild meadows or forests where all the trees are left untrimmed and wild. It's unapologetically chaotic and so so rich. More of a what I find beautiful thing, but...

A few weeks back I decided to make my workplace more colorful and packed with things. I hung up post cards from exhibitions with cool art, posters, put a few of my artbooks from inside a closet out on a shelf and got a more cozy lighting, a nice comfy couch and a colorful rug in front of it. And I am telling you, I feel like a door unlocked inside my chest. Im happy to come to my office, I could literally hang out there all day even when not working on my art... it helps :) like, a lot. In german theres a proverb: genius conquers chaos.
A really random thought I just noticed that has nothing to do with this talk specifically is that whenever the piano sets in at the end I immediatly think oh no, at some point it's gonna end and I'll have to get out of headspace and look for a new talk or some music and then I just go back to thinking about the talk or wherever my mind goes and only a while later I notice the music has stopped. Your videos have such a calming and relaxing effect, it's really special.
9:37 if there's a pattern I've noticed about my art journey, it's exactly that - phases. It feels almost like a perfect cycle too.
I think almost everyone starts off in a creative phase. Imo this is why so many people quit/pause their journey, because all of a sudden, there's this feeling of "this is not what I signed up for" once they/we hear about the "fundamentals".

This is so interesting! So, l have always been unhappy with my physical appearance-and for a long time I didn’t put anything into my appearance until I became interested in tattooing. I always have been passionate about certain aesthetics, and I found that getting tattoos from artists I look up to has made me appreciate my self more-I also relate to the ring thing-I never have been a jewelry guy but during a rough patch in my life a friend gave me a piece of costume jewelry as a gift, and I wore that ring for several years until I had to get it removed, but I remember really taking pride in having that ring.
I'm honestly struggling a lot to only start doing what I want, for almost a year now I've had this story that I want to write down and develop but because I'm being lazy I haven't even sketching it, I just try to convince my self that it won't be a good story because this is the first time I write something but there's something telling me to do it. Hopefully now I can try and give it a go, thanks

I always felt alone about this.. expressing my own aesthetic style and getting the type of clothes, necklaces, making my room a specific to my aesthetic, 3D printing custom jewelry, I building my computer to my aesthetic which is another reason why I love pc building so much is that I can make it into my own! and having Rainmeter installed, creating my own skins and my own font to match it, it's the universe that I want to live in!
I realized a lot of it came from playing Myst with my parents when I was really young, and the atmosphere I picked up from it was very mysterious, and always had a fascination for darkness, which led me to an aesthetic of witchy, occult, geometric, mysterious things. Certain music fits this aesthetic perfectly but its not tied to a certain genre.. which makes it hard to find, but when I find it... I literally crying a lot in a good way!
For the longest time I never met anyone that I could relate this to, but you talking about this.... o.. m.. g... so I'm not going crazy???
11:18 that's something I've noticed among the pro artists I watch/listen to: most seem to have as much fun doing studies as they do drawing for themselves. It's as if the two merge together almost completely at some point.
In my experience I found it fun to study at first, but then I just started getting frustrated with a lack of progress like everyone. Then I fell in love with my own art once again, wanting to progress further with what I've learned so far. Right now, I'm back to studying and practicing, but it doesn't feel as frustrating anymore. It's a good feeling to intuitively sit down everyday and practice, even a little bit, on whatever it is you're trying to improve at.

Omg. I love this video! I’ve done this for myself! I turned my drawing room into a pirate captains quarters! Thrift stores and garage sales! All the rooms in my house have a different theme. And all for cheap.

Ah I love this video! I feel so understood in it haha, I am the complete opposite of a minimalist. I like my room to be very personal, decorated with fun little plushies, figurines, posters and colors that reflect my taste. I love to dress up in alternative fashion and incorporate that particular fashion in my work, it brings me so much joy
that's why I love yt channels like Rachel Maksy. The way she builds outfits and her whole lifestyle and home, and it's clear what she's inspired by but also her unique personal style :)
Thank again Adam. This is something I've been desperate to do for years. The only thing holding me back is where I live; I want to move before I invest too much time and energy building a home in an environment that is detrimental to my wellbeing. Juggling quality of life, health and needs against what I really want to do isn't the most fun in the world.
Really funny coincidence (?), thanks to this pandemic and being stuck at home alot, I had time to rethink my past and think on what were the things I gravitated to as a kid that gave me joy or piqued my interests. Thanks to a lack of commute I've been able to buy stuff that little me would have loved having around: shiny rocks, tactile objects like diy kits and puzzles, and a few other knik knaks that bring me joy when I enter my space.

Sometimes I feel like a bird of paradise making a nest, when I think about my art studio. Finding the right things to add to it, and then finding places to put it, like a bird being picky while nesting. I have multiple collections that overlap. From collecting teal things, sea shells, dried seaweed roots (they look cool when you mold them to dry certain ways, very eerie), hermit crab figures, coloured glass, and a ton of plants. Very ocean-esque. Thinking on it; my main art medium is watercolour... so maybe that makes sense, aha.

Whenever i have a studio it will have industrial old militry or dockyard / factory kind of look(cause i love asthetica of old factory/industrial/military kind of stuff love that kind of art and i geek about it). But i always dwell that is it me just dreaming about things that dosen't matter or am i being childish or is it that its going too far in one direction. But your talk helps me to figure out its totally fine to do that and have that dream.😊. And definitely im going to put pullies,chain,old pipes into it.

My studio has been a work in progress for years now 😂 I share the house with my roommate but my bedroom, bathroom and studio are very obviously mine because they’re the only rooms in a otherwise plain white house that are painted in colors with tons of plants. My relationship with my studio and my career as an artist is a little.... tense rn but I’m still trying to make it feel like my dream studio slowly but surely

Had a very similar experience except mine was me finally buying my first house with my girlfriend (after renting for years) with walls to finally call my own I hung shelves for all my figures , art books and now have 2 A0 poster of Alphonse Mucha on my computer wall. I love my work space
Good video man! I've had experiences along these lines too. In fact, exploring life through my environments and the objects I was attracted to was something of an odyssey that led to me discovering that I had autism, not to mention improving my life and making me feel like I was going in the right direction. I got really into both the earthy, historic realm as well as the modern, grand-architecture and vaporwave realm and it helped a lot to ACTUALLY be in the environments and connect with the physical objects.
Like you said, there's some kind of personal, perhaps spiritual experience in connecting to the right environments and objects. There were mornings when I felt I just "needed" to be able to observe and connect with old Japanese tunics and roningasa in order to feel uplifted so I could proceed with work that day. Same with high-altitude mountains, icy zones, ocean life and zany 80's and 90's art and CGI, as well as really earthy fantasy and medieval places/things.
You ought to show us more of your real-world environments, because they sound really cool. I was just thinking about how I could start putting more earthen-workshop accoutrements and bright, icy sights around me last night, and then your video appeared! I've been buying more and more objects over the years simply because I physically enjoyed them and sometimes I still feel like I'm just being frivolous about it, but I'm realizing more and more that it's actually really important in my life. We just have to remember to keep trying to develop our awareness of our tastes so that we can assess the things we run across at increasingly better levels and really maximize this "object sense" as I call it-a way of life, but also a way forward.
And, yes, I wasn't typically "artistic" in the normal sense, but I've been producing art more as I've been connecting to the physical things I so deeply value, and apparently people really love what I'm making so far!

Since the start of my journey in digital/3D art about 8 years ago, I've slowly just abandoned a life full of arts and passions in favor or school and career. I've been creatively exhausted and empty for the past years and I feel like I'm forcing myself to create, learn techniques & anatomy. Im 31 now and I have so much issues creating and having an artistic drive. I've been neglecting to live my art.

I always see the creations in my dreams that i never did and they are absolutely fascinating. I wonder when i will be able to draw like in those dreams of mine. When will i get my creativity and not rely on other peoples art and not feel like im stealing it

I think the only real thing holding me back, is myself. I've always had an issue with being vulnerable but, I want to open up with my art and show how I'm feeling. It scares me so much though. I often think, "oh, if i show this, people will look at me like I'm weak and sad, I don't want them to think that." This has caused the art that I show to people to be... empty and boring. My personal art isn't like that. It has life, whether or not if it features a melancholy subject or something happy. My art that I post to my instagram is all just boring bust-shots of random characters, that mean little to nothing to me. Sure, I spent 4 hours on a piece and I think it's pretty or I like the color palette but, it's empty and I can't look at it and feel like I can relive the hours it took me.
Sorry for the small rant/vent, just needed it to be said. Thank you for your video Adam, you made me have a lot more confidence in myself. I'm also going to try to take a small break from posting my art and instead, work on my art space. :)

I'm currently during whole-house renovation and while I'm trying to create some soul in every place I design, I struggle with designing the office space. I fell into the trap of wanting everything clean and proper, but thanks to being confined to small space (about 8m2), the clutter left behind just tells its own story. The antique watch of my grandmother, the raw wooden box full of pretty runestones, a porcelain cat coin bank, statuette of a geisha, the piles of stationery... And the gaming gear. It all tells some kind of story and adds a personal touch, whether I really want it or not.
New vid from Adam? aight time to take out the pencil and draw at 2 am in the morning. Your videos truly make it even more of a joy to paint, even more then it already is. You create the perfect mindspace to be in. Thank you.
Your art talks are truly something else! I only found you on UA-cam the other week, but I can't stop just listening while I work. I've discovered your channel about 1.5 months ago and I've been binge-watching (listening) to them while I go about my day, even when I go for my morning walk in the park. I've never gone to art school and never had an art teacher. Although we are about the same age (you mentioned your age in a few of your videos 😊), to me, you art the art teacher that I never had and, it feels like having a virtual father who speaks words of wisdom, kindness and encouragement to me. Again, something that I never had as well. 😊🙏

for me not intentually to reflect my art but just cause its fun to paint a tone of my stuff to create a colour scheme, reorganise it putting in more nature and even adding one of thoughs big Jars with a tap thats like a waterfall over a big plant pot that I can drink from and all other kinds of stuff and

Dude, I really cannot thank you enough for these videos. I've been taking the journey as a beginner, I got through the fundamentals, I've progressed fairly far, and I've been just in a horrible rutt to get anything of substance done as of late. It has been kind of depressing to look back and see how little I'd gotten done, and I went on like an extremely long period of time not being as good as I could've been, and that really sucked. I beat myself up over it, and what I think I needed most to conclude this was someone at the end of the tunnel saying "life is life", and giving some amazing guidance and advice, and just being very chill and accepting.

It's always blowing my mind how your videos are always resonating with something I'm thinking about in my own life. Since quarantine started last year, I have been seeing my living space as an extension of me, my art, and my identity and building my perfect environment step by step. I have discovered in this process what I like and what I don't like, my own tastes and it even extended to what I look for in other people's art I follow. I found common threads, but I hadn't yet translated this new knowledge about me into my own art. I always felt pretty aimless when I was drawing, I just drew things without thinking too much about it, just trying to improve my skills without artistic expression behind it. Your videos play a big role for me in trying to change that.
Even when I send your videos to my artist or non-artist friends, they always told me how fitting the topic is, since they've been wondering about the same thing.

these past weeks i had waves of hyperactivity everytime i tried to sit down and draw and it was driving me crazy cause i just couldn't calm down and draw naturally, calmly but hey, i don't know what is it about your voice or the things you say but this morning i could calm down and focus a little more while listening to your video, thank you so much for what your doing to all the artists that are listening to you Adam
Hi Adam! I consider myself SO lucky to finally find your channel! The audio quality is outstanding, the topics really move me as an illustrator and your thought processes give me many kinds of joy, relief, hope, trust and curiosity towards the world around me and the world in my head. I've learnt so much about myself the last days due your clever ways to put important thougts into words. I watched (listened) one of your videos and you told about why you are creating long, peaceful videos to bring some sort of "painting companion" alive. I really like the idea and enjoy these long, relatable talks! You mentioned some other creators who create similiar videos, which helps one to concentrate on painting. Unfortunately I forgot to write their names down and I'd be so happy to check them out after watching all of your videos. Could you give me some advice on this, please?🙏⭐

I literally started renowating my studio today because " it was too plain and boring", weird coincidence :D. Also thrift stores are the best thing ever, my wardrobe is full of thrifted items. It's so cheap and you can find really unique pieces
I heard this episode on the same day it went out, and it got me thinking. Because it was one of those thing that you need to digest and create a thoughtfull idea. I'm in a little bit of a "creative block". Not in a way that I don't have ideas, but more like I don't like the final result, the "craftmanship" I put on my drawings. They're good, not perfect but at least good, an average good, but they're not personal I don't feel them "mine". And it's something that went for I think one whole year maybe even more. I heard this episode and I was like:"Ok, let's look at the inside of the box a little bit better". The room where I work, game and sleep. And it was effectively aseptic. What I mean with this? The walls are completely empty, no frames, no posters no whatsoever on the walls, some comics on some shelves, the computer with the desk, and in a way that's it. It's not clean, there is some mess, it's aseptic. There is no personality, and if there is I think it's just a faint scent... Ironically speaking looking at my bedroom, where I spend most of my time, my room that should be the sum of myself, brought this question:"What do I even like or dislike?Am I an aseptic person?" And the most ironic thing is that this little introspection was created by a Canadian dude talkin about furniture, if you allow me some humor.

Unfortunately, I don't have a proper art studio, however I do surround myself with many things such as older knick knacks, and furnitures around where I work. I often find many things in thrift stores. Thrift stores and yard sales are the best to find unique items because that is where you can find things more personal. That is the key for a studio or even just a home.
I’d love to be able to have the option to download the audio and listen to a long list of these. Have you thought about releasing a pod of this audio in tandem?
I haven´t thought about my livingspace from this perspective ever! I always thought about funktion and "normal" designs to "fit in" (what ever THAT means) Thank you for your videos Adam! ^^
