- Some Cybertronians are very unique. Going all the way back to Diaclone, these Transformers have the ability to transform into two seperate alt modes. Today we look into their origins and what characters can!

A couple of corrections to make before you leave a comment about it, yes I am now aware that Sandstorm's alt mode is a SH3 Sea King, which is an older helicopter. The MH53 Pave Low, which is Movie Blackout's alt mode, is much larger but is made by the same manufacturer. Because of this, they look similar which is probably why the TF Wiki lists Sandstorm as the Pave Low. The Bumblebee movie Triple Changers alt modes are as follows - Blitzwing is a F-4 Phantom II. Shatter is a Harrier. The official Asian market poster I used has a red F-4 Phantom for her jet mode, but in the film she is a Harrier.

@RodimusPrimal I love it! as I do with most of your Transformers videos. There is though one piece of info that you forgot to mention and that is that Sandstorm and Octane are actually friends. This ties in with the DREAMWAVE story line that you mentioned in which Shockwave was experimenting with Cybertronians to create the Triple changes, but one detail in importance is that these Cybertronians were actually all Autobots POWs, and in his experiments he turned them into Decepticons. A lot of them were supposed to have shattered memories of their former lives as Autobots and maybe this is what happened with Sandstorm and Octane. They probably remember their time as prisoners along with Springer, Astrotrain and Blitzwing. Too bad DREAMWAVE closed under Chap 11, I much loved THEIR Transformer comic stories more so than IDW.

What did Optimus Prime mean when he said “...more alive?” in reference to losing the ability to transform? I’m a purist that only appreciates G1 and it’s feature length movie so I have no background at all on this concept. I utilize this video series to fill in the gaps of my knowledge. Therefore, I very much appreciate this series and your efforts to produce it - thank you!

When I saw Astrotrain transform from train to space shuttle, when I first saw the ‘86 movie as a kid. I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
What's so cool about it is that all of the Decepticons were INSIDE of him.
Astrotrain was my FIRST Decepticon and my second Transformer. Prime was my first transformer and my folks got me Astrotrain for Christmas so I'd have someone for Prime to fight.

I had a friend when I was very young who had a G1 Apeface, and I thought that was one of the coolest toys ever. I've never experienced Snapdragon, except in the form of the pocket sized "Night" toy made by Unique Toys.

@@lel0uchvibritannia981 I think Lani Bird218 is right. I mean how often did we see anyone other than Starscream try to overthrow Megatron and take control of the Decepticons? Starscream was quite often making it known he wanted to over throw Megatron, and every so often he tried to do so only to fail miserably. This episode had Starscream start off teaming with the triple changers to do that only for them to doublecross Starscream and try to take over for themselves. And fail even worse than he normaly would because while they did manage to get Megatron and Starscream temprarily out of the way, their plans to control things were ultimately doomed to fail.

I love this channel! I'm a too young to have watched the Original G1 but I'm still very intrigued and curious about the original lore. You always deliver, satiating my insatiable curiosity again and again.

I recommend giving the original G1 cartoon a try. If you look around you might find a way to watch episodes online somewhere. It might not be as magical to watch as it was for 80s kids but it will give a better appreciation for where it all began and what the modern continuities are derived from.

Wish they had Season 2 up, I need to get the second half of the season as I only have Season 2.0, aka the first half, on DVD so I don't I have the creation of the Stunticons, Aerialbots, Combaticons, or Prime on DVD. Though I do have all the important Dinobot episodes (at least the ones I think are important). I get Season 2.5 on DVD and I'll have all of G1 collected.

I get they were looking to make almost any type of vehicle TF marketable, but Broadside was a mistake. AN AIRCRAFT CARRIER?? The cartoon was smart, keeping him a giant a la Omega Supreme, but it cost him the camaraderie with Sandstorm and Springer...except in the wonderful U.K. comics, of course. (But debuting Springer by himself in the movie ruined Autobot Triple Changer marketability anyway.)
Along with Snap, Ape, and Scorponok, you can throw Fort Max in there as being a Triple Changer as well. Heck, Metroplex and Trypticon, too! But now we're gettin' nuts! 😆
As ever, I err on Dreamwave side of things, and I say Shockwave modified whatever natural abilities multi-changers had, resulting in Triple Changers, and Autobot spies stole the technology.
As for Devastator forming inside of Astrotrain, well, that wasn't even the craziest part of the movie! 😉😂😂

@@r.a.overbee7174 True. "Blue Thunder" originated as a 1983 movie, and the TV series started a mere 16 days before "Airwolf". But while the movie was a success, the TV series didn't ilast very long. Both "Blue Thunder" and "Airwolf" were midseason replacements which began airing in January of the '83-'84 season. Intrestinyly, although "Blue Thunder" began Januray 6th and "Airwolf" January 22nd, "Airwolf's" season ended sooner with 12 episodes while "Blue Thunder" season ended two days later with only 11 episodes. "Airwolf" was picked up for a second season while "Blue Thunder" was canceled. And why was it canceled? Couple of reasons. First, ABC ran it against ratings success "Dallas", "Dallas" won that ratings war. Second, "Airwolf". ABC felt the two shows were too similar and that CBS's "Airwolf" would win the TV helicopter war so they just didn't bother. "Airwolf" ran for four seasons (though personally I don't count the crappy fourth season as that's like "Battlestar Galactica 1980", everyone you care about is gone)

Hey Roddy, I liked the "Airwolf" music you inserted there with the story on Springer! Not many youngsters will recognize that one! As for my thoughts on Starscream in the new Bumblebee movie,I dont like the whole thing with Blitzwing being easily mistaken for Starscream. I dont know if that was an uh-oh moment , or too many drinks that night or what, but personally, being an old school G1 guy,I think it sucks!! Hopefully the director will work this big crapstorm out! Triple changers...to me.... Should be any vehicle (including air, land ,or water), that takes on a complete change of either or twice, and have a robot form!...period. Great video Roddy! Adding on your theory that Blitzwing was one of the Decepticon Seekers. You can be right on that. It’s possible when the Autobots and Decepticons crashed and were then revived and fixed by Teletran 1, Blitzwing was probably not fully fixed since the Autobots didn’t have triple changers at the time, and they probably don’t know the transformation sequence of triple changers work. Due to this, Blitzwing was changed into a normal Transformer with two alternate modes, which is a robot and jet. He would then be fixed later to be turned back into a triple changer.

And then we have all of the Transmetal 1 characters in Beast Wars. Though they are described as having a 3rd "vehicle mode", most of them, especially the early ones like Cheetor, Rattrap, and Megatron, effectively just have Beast Modes with some "vehicular" parts, like wheels or jet boosters, and are more akin to Tracks' flight mode. Rampage and Depthcharge, however, actually do closer resemble having a true 3rd mode, since Rampage gets tank treads and can use his cannon in this form, and Depthcharge looks like a Cybertronian submarine. But, I wouldn't call them "Triple Changers" because they already have the title "Transmetal". I WOULD call Optimal Optimus a "Multichanger", though, since his new form was created by Primal housing Prime's Spark, so it effectively rebuilt him to be more like the ancient Cybertronians than the Beast Wars era bots.

When oberserving the Human Species
it became somewhat clear to me that it often happens that some individuals can have the same names without encountering too much difficulty, although the latter fact can sometimes lead to certain strange thoughts and / or actions.
Great video, love this topic. I wish you had made more mention of the Diaclone Helicopter/Tank/Robot that was around the same time as the Diaclone version of Blitzwing, but that is fine, as I didn't even know of its existence until this year. I do have some challenges to your theories though. First, I would suggest that Blitzwing might have been on Earth but NOT on the Ark, that he had been another Decepticon who had been aboard the Nemesis, like the Insecticons, but had been in another escape pod and simply been in stasis until discovery. Second, I would be extremely doubtful of the triple changer technology having been developed by the Quintessons due to canon issues. In the Five Faces of Darkness arc, the Cybertronians were shown fighting and driving the Quintesson forces off while in robot form, and it is stated that when the Decepticons took over, enslaving the Autobots, that the Autobots "turned to stealth and new power, the ability to transform". Therefore, the ability to transform at all was not present during the Quintesson's control of Cybertron, or else it would hardly be "new". I think it more likely that when the Decepticons copied the Autobot's ability to transform, that they conducted experiments in order to improve on it, resulting in not only triple changers but combiners, duo cons, and possibly laying the foundation for the titans as well. Sandstorm's off planet origin is simply explained by saying that his ancestors were willing or unwilling subjects to expand upon the transformation abilities of their race.
On a final note, about what is and what is not a triple changer, there were some clear criteria set out by fans a while back that I think best defines them. First, they must be of normal size, at least figure wise. Titans such as Metroplex, Trypticon, and so on are so much larger that it is easier for them to have multiple modes, possibly even multiple transformation cogs to guide their transformation. Second, they must have three separate complete modes. This means that combiners, who have a third form as a module or component of a gestalt, and Transformers like Tracks and the Transmetals, whose third mode is simply a modification of the vehicle or animal mode, are not eligible. I would also point out that five out of the six "official" G1 Transformers had very powerful personalities and minds. All three Decepticon Triplechangers attempted to take over the Decepticons, while Springer was named as Rodimus Prime's successor and Sandstorm already was a leader on Paradron. If one considers the mental training Heatwave underwent in the Rescue Bots cartoon, it could be suggested that ANY Transformer with sufficient willpower can become a Triple changer, but that is another topic. Here's the thing about learning to transform. They already had the ability since it's part of their bodies, hence the T-Cog. Also, there was construction vehicles in the peacetime part of the flashback. I say that not all early Transformers knew they had the ability to transform because the Quintessons programmed them not to think about it. It's like our Appendix. Many have had it removed but people aren't sure what it really does.
An interesting point, but one I'm not sure I agree with. As far as I know, there is no information as to when the T-Cog actually became standard for Cybertronians, especially in the G1 cartoon, so I must ask was it "originally" part of their bodies? It is entirely possible that the first few generations of Cybertronians lacked a T-Cog entirely, and that just as we have developed genetic engineering, Cybertronian scientists developed the T-Cog as an improvement on their original design which would go on to become standard for all future Cybertronians. The construction vehicles seen during the first golden age, when the Autobots and Decepticons lived in harmony, do indeed resemble the vehicle modes of the Constructicons, but we do not see them actually transform. While this may seem overly critical, I would say that without actual evidence of transformation, they may have simply been drones, operated by remote control. Even if they were actual Transformers, it would only prove that some, not all, Cybertronians had this ability.
In any event, my point is that according to the Five Faces of Darkness, the transformation ability didn't appear to be common among the populace until years after the Quintessons left Cybertron, thus making it unlikely that they were behind the Triple Changer technology. I would suggest that they kept a close eye on the Cybertronians, and if possible would capture vulnerable subjects, such as explorers, scouts, or colonists, and use them as we would test subjects. This would let the Quintessons evaluate their progress, in the hope of recapturing Cybertron, and also see if there were any new technologies that they could exploit. It is by this method that the Quintessons developed the Sharkticons, and would continue to be experts on the Cybertronians despite having little to no contact in several million years.

Astrotrain was among my favorite TF toys growing up as were the triple changers being one if my favorite gimmicks. Very cool look into their origins. With how Blitzwing recognizes but don't remember the Quitessons it makes you wonder if the Quintessons had had a fail safe, maybe like a mind wipe program to erase their memory of them after they were purged from Cybertron during the revolt or the Transformers truly just forgot about their original creators in the cartoon.
Anyway back on topic. I think any TF with three distinct modes should be considered a Triple Changer. Emphasis on distinct as Tracks would not qualify since that mode is more of just a flying car like something out of M.A.S.K. Same with Perceptor even if the mode is a mobile lab it just seems to be a variation on his microscope mode. Very cool topic choice.

Personally, I think that if the toy AND the cartoon character both transform in three seperate modes, (robot & two alt modes) then they fall under the triple-changer banner. By this logic I would include Apeface, Snapdragon, Doubledealer, Scorponok, & Cybertron's Megatron. Punch-CounterPunch I'm kinda on the fence about because although he does have three different modes, two of then are just robots. SixShot, QuickSwitch, and RID's Megatron are already known as Six-Changers or Multi-Changers.

To me, a Triple Changer is a Cybertronian that has two completely distinct and different alt. modes and can still become a robot. I'm sure that's also probably how a lot of people view it as well
I would also caviatte that they cannot fall under other mode variations such as combiner or whatever the hell skylinks falls under

I think what should define a triple, or even a multiform changer, is separate and distinctly different modes. Blitzwing is an obvious example, and using the briefly shown picture of the Beast wars transmetals, I'd say Waspinator is the best, lower end example, as he has a jet cockpit, his bug mode legs form landing gear, jet thrusters are revealed when folding his back legs up against his body, and his wasp wings fold and reposition as jet wings and stabilizers. Most of the other Transmetals barely have enough changes happen to warrant truly calling their "third mode" a vehicle mode. So I feel those two examples realistically set the standard of what defines being a Triple changer.

I concur with your assessment of Bumblebee's Blitzwing, I think that he was just a random Seeker with the same name as the Triple Changer. It's not like it would be the first time characters have doubled down on a name, we already got two Eagle Eye's, Override's, etc.
Or maybe overcharge is in the bay formers universe and he is blitz wings personal friend and when overcharge finds out blitzwing is KIA he takes the name blitzwing to honor his name by killing as many autobots as he can

Fun fact: Optimus was a Triple Changer himself at one point. In Transformers GO!, when Dragotron/Predaking reawakened, Optimus appeared on the battlefield once more, with a new body to boot. This one let him transform into a bullet train as well as a dragon

Carbombya, lol. Gotta love that name. Casey Kasem took offense at the character who was the leader, an obvious parody of Moamar Khadaffi. Or Ghadaffi or however you spell his name. Also, I heard that it was supposed to be Blitzwing in Starscream's Ghost instead of Octane, which would explain Starscream saying "old friend". And Sandstorm and Octane, though Autobot and Decepticon respectively, were good friends. There's a lot that was left out that should have been included here.

Instead of being unseen in the background for season one, season 2 characters could have been brought in by space faring characters: Astrotrain, Cosmos, and Omega Supreme. For Decepticon an easier explanation would be space bridge.
Perhaps Blitzwing's remains might be pieced together by humans or salvaged by Decepticons and a tank mode added in future live action films.

Astrotrain and Blitzwing were two of my favorite toys. Astrotrain went in my father's toy purge when I was 11 but Blitzwing survives, though without a turret and missing a wing.
Basically the original 6 are the only triple changers as far as I a concerned, though more can be added to the list

15:30 Personally I like to see it as a sort of in-between mode, since he basically just bunches over and has the cannon on his back flip over his head. The way that I see it at least is that he had those shields on his arms and one time when he was using that to cover some other bots’ he came up with the idea of having a cannon on his back so that he could return fire while acting as a shield, so he had it modded into his chassis (Presumably by Shockwave, or maybe Knockout if he exists in the Bayformers universe) but that’s just my opinion

Blitzwing also appears in Fight or Flee, which is Sandstorm's debut, and is therefore set Starscream's Ghost, meaning it definitely cannot occur before Webworld. It's certainly possible Galvatron welcomed Blitzwing and Octane back after Webworld, but it doesn't seem like his sanity was restored very much. These were most likely animation errors, though Galvatron IS probably crazy enough to forget he ever banished them.
Every transformer with a 3rd mode should be considered a triple changer. This not te case for Tracks, or the Beast wars Transmetals wich have a an enhanced mode. For example the flying car for Tracks it´s a flying car, it can fly but it´s still a car, so it´s an enhanced car, not another mode. Now, Galvatron from the Cybertron Cartoon, is a triple changer, a car, a Jet and a Robot mode.

Do a video on Punch/Counterpunch, the most unique Transformer yet, with the ability to become either a Decepticon or an Autobot.
Springer was briefly shown in the Animated series, but it was said that he is not a triple changer because, as you should know, the Decepticons have full access to flight capabilities while the Autobots are still experimenting on it.

I never got the opportunity to watch G1 except seeing many clips of it and the 1986 movie. I’m a movie, Animated and Prime fan but your videos really helps me learn so much of G1 and everything that makes Transformers such a great franchise. Absolutely liked this and the seekers video. To answer the question: By description/specification alone, one can consider any transformer with a default form and two distinct alternate modes a Triple-changer. Whether they are called such in storylines does not discount that. Blitzwing was the first and still my favorite of the entire bunch. Thank the Quintessons for creating him, and thank you for the video.
I see the Transmetals the same as Tracks and Perceptor. They aren't triple changers as their third form is really just a variation on thief vehicle/ animal mode.
