Thanks so much for this, it was exactly what i was looking for. I just ordered this online on Musicians Friend for 149... Idk how you got urs so cheap, but maybe its cause this one is USB powered. Ima use this for gameplay commentary and I'm so excited for it to arrive. I'm a teen and it's my first time i ever bought a real professional mic like this. Thanks again bro, you are pure awesomeness and you seem like you know what ur doing,.
I did the same test with a lav mic and this mic and wow the MXL 990 is amazing. Huge difference as you can hear in this video. Thanks for the demo. Nice job much appreciated.
I am so jealous that I didn't buy this microphone as my friend said "don't worry about the price for it's a great microphone". Well, I didn't want to listen, and paid $149 for an Audio Technica 2035 which sounds 1/2 as nice. This guy knows of what he speaks!
Thank you, thank you. Great reviews are done in a way that completely assures the viewer to experience and gain all the answers to their questions. You have done that. Although I am an amature you helped me purchase a Mic "one time" and get what reviews to hundreds and hundreds of dollars more for comparables. To answer a question about recording into a PC...This Mic come in two different formats. USB Style-plugs into the PC and that is the only way it can be used. OR. .XLR Style- 3 prong.
How time flies.....I watched your review and also your version of "I wanna know what love is"...Result..I bought the mic set...Thanks for the great review..
Nice review Craig. I just did a shoot out with this mic against the Sterling S50, ADK A51, and Sony C48. The Sterling and MXL both came in dead last, the ADK came in 2nd and the Sony came in first for strength, clarity and value. I have several large diaphragm mics, but only need one good mic for instruments and vocals. The Sony does cost quite a bit more, but is worth the cost in clarity alone. Cheap Chinese mics are great for starting out, but fall apart when compared to decent studio mics. On another note, Ps and Bs are called Plosives and the diaphragm reacts much like the face of a kitten if that makes sense? Btw… what part of Canada are you located? B.C.?
really good demo of this mic, was looking to buy my first mic for home studio, watched many videos & read lot of reviews & after seeing this video, I ordered the MXL990 tonight! thank you for your great demo, it was really helpfull
i really enjoyed your demonstration of this mic, its great i got one for christmas and use it for lead vocals and overdubs. i am a counter-tenor and this mic really brings out the midrange in my vocals so the highs are nice and smooth and not too harsh, thanks for a proper demo this is a great mic i would recommend it to anyone on a budget.
OMG I was about to get rid of this microphone until you said you have to set it up the right way. I have been talkin into the top of it. I owe you a huge thank you.
Love the part where you switched the mics for an A/B comparison. Wish more youtubers would do that for demos. Just bought myself the patriot model with US flag design
Greetings, Craig! Thank you so much for this review! I'm trying to get into the voice acting business and I was looking for a good starting microphone. I had no idea the MXL 990 was capable of such high-quality recording capabilities. The sound quality sounds very similar to Howard Stern's radio broadcasts! You, sir, earned a well-deserved subscribe! Best regards, Soapy
If you buy this microphone get the MXL 990s it has -10 switch and it works really good for rapping and it takes out a lot of background noise. If you want to stay in the price range get the at2020.
Thanks for the great vid, it was very helpful that you showed the difference between your clip-on mic & the MXL, it gave me a good idea on the comparative quality, thumbs up!
Just purchased the MXL990 and was wondering if you could tell me more about what settings you are using on your mixer. You also mentioned compression. I am using Sony Sound Forge Studio 10 Software and I'm not seeing in there anything about compression. But what are you using for compression settings. I know you're busy but sure wish you would do some more about the technical areas such as using the mixer or software.
It may not be a Neumann U87, but that is a great sounding mic for the price! I will be buying 2 of them for recording. BTW, what lavalier mic are you using? It sounds great for UA-cam videos! Randy
I've been using this mic for years and speaking into the top because I've mounted it with the top facing the mouth. Can't wait to try it correctly. Thanks for the tips!~
I have been using this mic for years ! I love it . I never knew that there was a front and back to it ! apparently i have been setting it up correctly every time !
Any standard / budget-friendly pop filter should do just fine. You can find them on Sweetwater or Musician's Friend. I strongly recommend that you make sure to get a double-layer pop filter. They are worth the extra few bucks. For example, if you do a search for "Musician's Gear Double Pop Filter 6 inch" you'll find it's only around 20 dollars (USD). Good luck!
It still sounds great to me... I bought a 990 based solely on this video.... Granted what I use it for (Amateur Radio) can't pass all of the audio this mic is capable of, it still sounds 100 times better than the mic I had before....
Thanks for this video! Very helpful, what kind of microphone stand were you using I like how it had the bend in the neck of it. I was thinking of getting a desk stand for mine until I saw yours seems like its more functional incase I dont want to sit at the table. Do you mind sharing who made yours?
Hello Craig, I have a question. Your sound sounds great. My cousin and I are looking into recording covers of several songs. But we are really not so knowledgeable about the equipment. I will for sure by this microphone but what other equipment is needed? Like for example, what mixer are you using? I am a Mac user btw. I would really appreciate it if you'd give me some advice. Nice video btw :)
Hi Craig - I like your Channel very much and love your Songs ... As I love recording and mixing it's every time very interesting to read sth about the gear used for recording. You are reviewing the MXL here, but I would like to know what's that lavalier mic you are using here ? Keep going and all the best from Amdterdam/Netherlands, Hendrik
Hey thanks for this vid man, I have a question though..what sort of mixer are you using? And does it make a BIG difference in quality from using an XLR and USB (same mic)? Thanks!
Hi Craig, I've been looking for a good mic for up to 100USD for voiceover, podcast, vocal etc and after watching your review I guess I'll buy MXL990. It's a standard XLR socket, right? I can't see it on your video.
I have heard that this mic was too high and TOO sensitive. I am considering either this one or the audio technica at2020. Main focus will be vocals/rap and acoustic guitar. Which one would be better the MXL 990 or the Audio Technica AT2020
Hey, nice video! I'm currently looking into microphones for home recording (Vocals and Acoustic Guitar) and i'm unsure what to go for, your video definitely swayed me into buying this mic but i am still quite torn between this and the AKG Perception 220 - which is slightly more expensive. I was just wondering if you have had any experience with the AKG or have any insight to offer as to which would be better for my purposes. Any help would be greatly appreciated =)

May i ask one more question: If i was to buy the mxl 990 or mxl 3000 and an m-box mini 3 would I be able to hear myself through my headphones AS i record? Or do i need additional material?
Hi! Looking into buying a mic for a podcast. How sensitive is this mic to background noise? A lot of reviews mention that it doesn't do well with any background noise as it picks it up very easy. What's your experience with background noise and the mxl990?
Hi Craig. Thanks for the video review. I've been doing my research and have been trying to find an external microphone that has high quality sound. And that I can plug straight into the 3.5 microphone jack of my Olympus DM 420 voice recorder. And I wasn't pleased with any of the Olympus microphones. The sound quality wasn't that great. What brand would you recommend I look into? Thanks.

Hi there very nice review im planning to get a condenser mic to start my home recording studio. will you recommend this to be used for vocals for songs and stuffs like that? hoping for your reply.. thanks
hey carig ... i have mxl770 and it was working pretty good for the past 3 years .. but today i connected it to the interface(scarleet 2i2) and there is a noise like wind or smth. like this so i changed the cable and the same thing but when i catch the cables head while its connected that noise disappeared when i leave the cable again same noise is happening..:( any advice
GREAT REVIEW,i have a question, since the mic is phantom powered...the fasstrack prottools 8 doesnt have it,will a phantom power supply help in order to plug the mic in to it,or will i need a new interface?i'd appreciate any help
Hi Craig, excelent videos on the MXL 990. Can you compare quatily, noise, etc between a MXL 990 USB and a MXL 990 + a m-audio fastrack interface? Thanks!
This is a great review! I ordered a 990/991 set because I want to record guitar and vocals. I need to buy something for the phantom power though... a mixer, or audio interface, or something like that. What to do!? I saw an audio interface for a reasonable price that had a guitar input (although I mainly bought for acoustic guitar) and two mic inputs. But maybe I should go for a mixer?
Hey Craig, so for Christmas I want to get this fabulous Mic for my dad. Unfortunately, he has a mixing board that is about 25 years old so it most likely does not fantom power. You mentioned an adapter? Do you have Any suggestions? Or if you could give me a general direction of any kind, it would be most appreciated! Thanks for the great review and happy holidays!
I know this comment is old, but most mixing boards with XLR inputs have phantom power, even if they're old. My Sunn SPL-2216 mixer is almost 30 years old and it still has phantom power.
Ted Pallas I believe that it should always be on, or at least, that's how mine is. If it isn't working for you, maybe you have something going wrong somewhere? Or hell, I bought mine used, maybe someone modded mine out back in the day haha. I just know that my phantom power is on by default. Are you having issues with it?
yeah, i've got a DI box plugged in that SHOULD be lighting up when it gets signal, but alas, alack, it's not. I can't find a manual, so I'm not sure if the default is yay/nay on phantom power...
I've recently used a Golden Age Project ribbon mic, it worked beautifully for vocals but it's about double the price. Have you had any experience with both?
Jake Bahling Sorry about my english. A good supply of phantom power could be the "M-Audio Fast Track" interface. I got one and it's work very well. U can use and hear the fx from the recording channel on real time and the interface latency is so low. Bless, from Panama.
Craig! I have this microphone, connected to a Behringer U-phoria umc22 with phantom power on, and I`m using Tracktion... but it doesn`t sounds!! How do I connect it!? What am I doing wrong?
Just one question. What kind of mixer are you using? and maybe one more, Would you recommend this mic to be used with a mixer via xlr or connected directly to your computer via usb?
thanks for the reply craig ;)...but could i ask how good the quality of the mic is like is it as clear as the mxl 990?...and also i can't find any good video's of where they show off the quality of it.
Thanks. The thing is I actually found the same microphone at $60 and the pack at $80, but no website ships it to Portugal. I even tried to send an e-mail to MXL to see if I can order it directly from their website and pay for the taxes, but I doubt they'll answer me.
Craig, might sound like a dumb question here as the mike is not readily marked of what is the front of the mike and what is the back of the mike. So pray tell, what is the front of the mike which you would want to use for vocals?
Hi Craig. I would like to ask a quick question. Would the MXL990 be good for group recordings or group singing? For example, acapella or 2 or 3 people talking in to one mic during a gaming session.
Don't worry about them man. I bought this mic a few months back after watching your review and been using it for my videos. Appreciate your help.
This was the most helpful reviews so far on UA-cam.
You went over a majority of things people needed to hear.
Thanks Craig!

Thanks so much for this amazing review! I am so grateful for people who put up in-depth reviews on UA-cam and share them, it really is a lot of help!

BEST REVIEW OF THIS MIC. Holy crap I spent an hour looking for a good sound test of this mic.
I'm an MXL 990 owner. I found your review insightful, factual and very helpful. Thanks.
Great video Craig,So is it not necessary to connect this mic through an interface to a computer? Also does it have a usb connector? Thank, cheers!
Dude! My stand broke on my MXL 990 USB. Whats a good shock mount that I can buy? Which one is that, that you have right there?
OMG I was about to get rid of this microphone until you said you have to set it up the right way. I have been talkin into the top of it. I owe you a huge thank you.

Hey Craig, where did you buy your mic arm boom? I've been looking for one of those, as I don't like the regular metal ones. Thanks for the review :)
Greetings, Craig!

If you buy this microphone get the MXL 990s it has -10 switch and it works really good for rapping and it takes out a lot of background noise. If you want to stay in the price range get the at2020.
Nystagmus?
Solid review. Thorough, and great comparison using the lav! Thank you!

Thank you Craig For the Review Im getting mine soon its on Transit.. by the way where did you get the Hookah from? it looks very tunisian
Very nice job. Go from the very begining to the end with simple but very usefull conclutions. I will look out for this one. THANKS!
I've used this mic for vocals, guitar, banjo, dobro, mandolin. All good. Nice for the price.
Do you have a preference or recommend a pop filter for this particular mic? Great video btw!!
Saw mic on a local sound studio's website..good info..thank you CT for sharing..
Hi Man, Thank you for a great review but i must to ask, what's the model of your Small video mic that attached to your shirt :) ?
Thanks for this video! Very helpful, what kind of microphone stand were you using I like how it had the bend in the neck of it. I found mine at the Goodwill and wanted to find out if it was any good so I thank you for this video. I am definitely keeping it.
Hi Craig - I like your Channel very much and love your Songs ...
As I love recording and mixing it's every time very interesting to read sth about the gear used for recording.
You are reviewing the MXL here, but I would like to know what's that lavalier mic you are using here ?
Keep going and all the best from Amdterdam/Netherlands,

Great review! I’m going to do a bit more research on this mic to see if its something I should buy, but this was a great starting point. Thanks!
Hi there Craig...I'm from the caribbean island....Was that ambient, fan, or computer noises in the audio?
Hey thanks for this vid man, I have a question though..what sort of mixer are you using? And does it make a BIG difference in quality from using an XLR and USB (same mic)? Thanks!
This microphone sounds amazing! Is it good for recording guitar aswell?
What is the microphone going into? In other words, what preamp/mixer are you using? It sounds great!
I also got this mic for $60 also about 6 months ago as my first condenser mic form my small home studio and I LOVE IT!!!!!
Hi Craig, I've been looking for a good mic for up to 100USD for voiceover, podcast, vocal etc and after watching your review I guess I'll buy MXL990. It's a standard XLR socket, right? I can't see it on your video.

What software you use to capture the video and audio simultaneously? Thanks and great video!!
Thank you for the video. I was thinking of buying this mic and you sold me.
Good video, I'm gonna buy one and I'm glad that this video shows the quality of the MXL 990 thanks
Great Review Craig!!
But is there a way to record songs by connecting the microphone to my P.C?? :)
@CraigTube Thats fair enuf. but i thought it would be logical that the 3000 would be better then 990. but the 990 has had nothing but positive reviews.
Nice overview. I've been looking for a good mic solution for a portable recorder. Keep up the great tech type vids.
Beautiful review , i've finally made up my mind on what mic i' ll buy! Thanks!
What would you recommend as a general EQ setting? I know it's different per person but I can't find a good EQ on this mic to save my life.
Which wud be a better option. Samson C01, Behringer C1, MXL 990, MXL 990s
Thanks.
Thx man this is the best review I found over this mic
Hi there and thanks for this informative clip - it's helping me enmormously as I choose which mike to buy for some posdcast / spoken recordings. I have a a quick question for you. I have a Korg D8 digital 8-track studio (that doesn't have phantom power). Would you recommend any pre-amp in particular to go with the MXL 990 ? Budget : max $300. Thanks in advance !!!
The best demo for this mic is your own video " Vocal Cover - I Want to Know What Love Is - Foreigner" . Very good singing and now I have and idea how it sounds in context, thank you very much for sharing. Big help. Cheers!
Do you think this mic would work well for bass guitar? I saw this one had the best frequency range out of all in it's price range, and I use a very treble-y tone, so I thought this would work well for that.
I've got the AT4050 and an Advanced Audio CM-12 that I use for recording. One of the biggest arguments I hear about the MXL is quality control. They're made in China(which is why they are so cheap) and the capsules can differ mic to mic a lot. For applications such as youtube and podcasts, it's tough to beat for the price.
Yes it does! The Nady has a usb input (Bought seperately) and you can plug the mic in with the Nady and there, you have music.
Hi there very nice review im planning to get a condenser mic to start my home recording studio. will you recommend this to be used for vocals for songs and stuffs like that?
hoping for your reply.. thanks
I just wanna say thanks for your videotutorial, this last weekend i bought this micro and i Wharfdale Connect 802 USB Mixer.
Best 990 review online for sure man..
Yeah, I'd like to know what kind of mic stand you're using.
hey carig ... i have mxl770 and it was working pretty good for the past 3 years .. but today i connected it to the interface(scarleet 2i2) and there is a noise like wind or smth. like this so i changed the cable and the same thing but when i catch the cables head while its connected that noise disappeared when i leave the cable again same noise is happening..:( any advice
How about some contact cleaner.
+CraigTube where can i find it? And how should I clean it? :D
i would like to get that mic can you please let me know where did you got it
btw very professional explanation in your videos :) very helpful
GREAT REVIEW,i have a question, since the mic is phantom powered...the fasstrack prottools 8 doesnt have it,will a phantom power supply help in order to plug the mic in to it,or will i need a new interface?i'd appreciate any help
Hi Craig, excelent videos on the MXL 990. Can you compare quatily, noise, etc between a MXL 990 USB and a MXL 990 + a m-audio fastrack interface? Thanks!
I'm convinced, I really want this mic now.
This is a great review! I ordered a 990/991 set because I want to record guitar and vocals. I saw an audio interface for a reasonable price that had a guitar input (although I mainly bought for acoustic guitar) and two mic inputs. But maybe I should go for a mixer?
Hey Craig, nice review! Ever had your hand on an AT2035? If so, what can you say about it, if any? Thanks!
***** Yeah, I've witnessed that, and really that's true! I have returned the AT2035 back to its box, hahaha! I love my MXL 990 :)
I know this is old...but how do you turn on phantom power on a 2216?
Ted Pallas I believe that it should always be on, or at least, that's how mine is. If it isn't working for you, maybe you have something going wrong somewhere? Or hell, I bought mine used, maybe someone modded mine out back in the day haha. I just know that my phantom power is on by default. Are you having issues with it?

Ted Pallas I have a manual for mine, PM me, I'll help you out
Nice :D Craig,what pre did u used?
I've recently used a Golden Age Project ribbon mic, it worked beautifully for vocals but it's about double the price. Have you had any experience with both?
What's your take on the MXL 3000? I've been shopping around for a while now and MusiciansFriend has a bundle on sale for $149.
A great demonstration. Please use it to record voice and guitar separately so we can see how well they work. PLEASE.
great review and info. i just ordered this mic today!
Hi Craig, can I use the MXL 990 as a external mic of a camcorder?
Thank you, nice vids!
Just ordered an MXL 990 based mostly off of this review. You sold it, man
***** Would you recommend this microphone for music? And is the USB version the same quality in your opinion?
Also *****, where can i get a cheap phantom power supply to plug into my laptop pc? I have $80 to work with.
Jake Bahling Sorry about my english. A good supply of phantom power could be the "M-Audio Fast Track" interface. I got one and it's work very well. U can use and hear the fx from the recording channel on real time and the interface latency is so low. Bless, from Panama.
Jake Bahling The Blue Icicle works fine.
Great review Craig
I just ordered a MXL 990 and the Behringer 302USB will it sound as good with my setup?
Hi craig!
First, thx for your videos
Could you explain me how does the phantom power work with the mxl 990?
Craig! I have this microphone, connected to a Behringer U-phoria umc22 with phantom power on, and I`m using Tracktion... but it doesn`t sounds!! How do I connect it!? What am I doing wrong?
God! This is just eargasm! :-D The quality is so crispy :-)
Thanks a lot, Craig! I'll buy the mine today! :D
Hey, great review! Just out of curiosity, are you canadian? :)
So you need a interface for this one?
Hi Craig. I would like to ask a quick question. Would the MXL990 be good for group recordings or group singing? For example, acapella or 2 or 3 people talking in to one mic during a gaming session.
