    My 01’ just crossed 200k miles on a 6 hour road trip. Noticed a misfire once I got back home and took her in for a diagnostic. Told me I needed a new valve cover gasket + tune up and wanted to run me up 1000$
    Got the parts off Amazon (valve cover gasket, spark plugs) 70$ total and now my dad and I are gonna knock this thing out ourselves 🤙🏽

    I got 300k on mine - mechanic said I got rear main seal leak $2100.00 - I checked the engine compartment looking for oil and found it around the backside of the valve cover and on the left (passenger) side f the valve cover. Saw nothing at the rear main seal. At 300k - it's cooked and cracked no doubt. Thanks for this - it's save a ton. BTW: Toyota Parts does NOT include the two gromet seals and it's $31 - $45 depending on if you pick it up or have it shipped.

    Was the timing chain a concern or recommend at all? Chain seemed loose...was there chain rattle heard on startup in this vid? If so, tensioner replacement could be verified with the cover off. The amount of RTV you put on seemed to be a lot! Think you promote leaking when you put too much on? Thanks for the video!

    The 2 seams where the head and timing cover meet that need rtv.
    Have you heard if you don't rtv those spots you'll get an oil leak that looks like a timing cover leak?
    The dealer is trying to sell me a timing cover reseal and I found when I removed the valve cover no rtv on those spots.

    Question. How much engine oil was your car burning from the valve cover gasket leak? I'm applying oil every 2-3 days :/ Imma have to do this. It's not my first rodeo. Maybe my fourth time doing this repair. Good thing I got this car instead of my old V6 Maxima.

    • @MyMika2004

      You shouldn't be burning oil with a valve cover leak

    • @bundysgarage
      @bundysgarage  6 місяців тому +1

      If you see tons of oil coming from the valve cover and hitting the exhaust that’s when you know you are burning oil from the valve cover. But more likely is last of maintenance and the rings are worn on the pistons and oil is burning that way.

      Leave the sparkplugs in...far less chance of something dropping into the cylinder.

    So I have a system code sayin bank one is running lean, I’ve done everything possible and can’t get rid of it. Today I noticed oil leaking from the valve cover and it’s missing that bolt on the right side that you said was a 12mm. The car was given to me so I’m not sure what work was done before, but I find it odd that that bold is missing. Do you think the system code could be from a bad gasket since I can’t figure out what else is wrong with it?

    is there any other reason ONE of my spark plug wells would have a little oil inside of it after the gasket has been changed? The dealer said its just RESIDUAL OIL? I also found that they left one of ignition coil hold-down screws loose. I have tried pressing down on top of the coil as i tried tightening it.

      @@ko2qx After going back and forth with the dealer, the mechanic of course, said that he did not strip the threads for the ignition coil hold down screw. So, it became my word against theirs. I agreed to purchase a new valve cover at their cost, but they would have to replace the gasket with no additional labor.
      Apparently the dealer did not install the valve cover gasket correctly from the outstart. I don't trust any of the Toyota dealerships, but I cannot seem to find an independent shop that is trustworthy. Just the other day another dealership overfilled my oil by a quart. a time before this incident I found that another dealership in the area had been under filling my oil during an oil change. Someone said that it's common practice for them to save on oil. I also caught them lying that they had been rotated my tires.

    Mmmmm. I appreciate some of the video and tips. However, how come you did not place ALL AROUND the valve cover groove the sealant so you all can be sure that the gasket with STAY IN PLACE the moment you turn it over (remember gravity!!) and move it all around to put if back on top of the engine. to assure so to get NO leaks at all!? The amount of RTV should be a minimum ONLY to cover/fill those gaps in those 2 corners, considering that I saw a disgusting work of ALL around RTV instead of any gasket at all in a certain local place when I stopped to get estimates for this simple work. I never went back for the estimate. So, as I was saying, do I see some of the blue gasket showing in the front corner? The gasket should not be visible, it is my belief, even after torque, IF it has been placed properly and professionally. Many thanks, anyway.
