Hi, I'm Mark and I've been teaching and playing guitar professionally for 26 years now, and I've picked up a lot of insights along the way; things I wish I had known when I started out. That's why I started this channel - to share this knowledge with you.
But this is more than just a place to learn guitar. It's also place where you can hang out, relax, be yourself, get support, make friends and get inspired to have more fun with your guitar. So go ahead. Pick up your axe. Hit play. And be a better guitarist.

My story is unusual; sax player since childhood, Berklee alumni both student and staff, born again musician on guitar four years and change ago. But what you're describing, it's exactly the same. I know music; I don't need more music lessons; I need to develop a repertoire.
When I started on guitar, having already been a musician my whole life, I didn't want to make the same mistakes, which were mainly just working on lessons and professionally being a technician--you put music in front of me, I play it. Part of me wants to be that good on guitar, that I can just sight read chord changes, but I much rather be one of these people who can impromptu perform at least five tunes.
The UA-cam stuff is geared for beginners, because that's where the money is, but this speaks to any level, especially people who are trained to play all the most elite music, but nothing that anyone wants to perform or hear.
And I don't want to play old music. Zero Beatles. I'm working on Alicia Keys 'If I Ain't Got You' which is gorgeous on guitar, at least the way I'm playing it. There's no lessons for that.
80% is a good guideline. Most conservatory instructors want you to get to beyond 100%, in a week, but no longer being in a college setting, yeah, get to roughly 80% and move on is a good guideline. 100% is for techniques, not material; the tune I mentioned above for example, that's some very doable new chord shapes for me, but that intro is some Classical type fingerstyle, on a Stratocaster. I practice that while I'm watching the news.

The biggest thing for me was being okay with having the song only 80% perfected… but once I accepted this.. when I would come back to my folder I was so much better! I am living proof this system seriously does work!

Does this mean I’m going to hear you playing that guitar little bit more often these days?… Are you married?… Because you seem like my type.

Yeah, that struck me too. In my experience, I don't need to work my butt off to perfect something, because the next time I pick it up, I'm miles better at it.

What a genius idea. I tend to have the chords written down in front of me if I play a gig, which tbh looks naff, this is a great motivator for committing songs to memory.. Thanks for this top tip Mark😁

Awesome suggestion. I have been in a slump for a while but this inspires me. I have seen great progress with your lessons since I restarted learning a few years ago. Although I am not at 100 percent I have a lot of 80 percent stuff for my new folder. Thanks. I couldn't have made it this far without you.

Yes it’s by far the most awesome concept that my students have actually taught me. Now you’ve got lots of songs that are 80% you can throw in there already, and see how your confidence grows from here. Thanks for your comment Troy now go play some guitar mate

I am prepping for a gig at work and have a couple down. I will definately keep two physical folders and keep adding. Great way to keep at it after the gig which is where I usually forget a few songs that I fought for only to wonder before next years kickoff ’didn’t I have a couple good ones way back’. Two folders is a great confidence builder and excellent memory backup👍🏻

Yes so true! Just keep constantly adding a new song every week and before you know it you’ve got an Intyre gigs worth of awesome songs ready to go at any moment. Thanks for your comment mate

This is brilliant! I always feel i have to do a "proper" lesson where I do my scales, then technique practise, then new songs I'm learning....I don't generally treat myself to playing the songs i know and having a song a long until after all that and by then I'm usually quite tired and my brain needs a rest! And sometimes the thought of scales puts me off picking the guitar up! This gives me permission to just play my songs without all the learning and practising first. 😃 I already have my folder of "done" songs and a note book for new learning so I'm already there. Love the idea of learning to play from cold too. Also LOVE the idea of the 80%. So they don't have to be perfect. This is such a revelation. I've hit a bit of a rut recently with my guitar - been using the same online guitar chap for a while now and got a it bored. Mark has a different approach which i like a lot. It suits me and it's very refreshing so he is my new go to guitar guy since I discovered him last week. Am all over him - so to speak! It's ok my husband knows all about him! 😁 I'd love to be a Skype student but I'm not sure the time difference will work England to NZ! Thanks very much Mark. You are ACE. x

For those who didn't go to any kind of music school, this is what it's like 90% of the time. No instruments, just listening and taking mostly mental notes.

Do you have any specific tips to help with singing and playing simultaneously? I have two strumming patterns that I can make work with a lot of song but when I try a new one I can’t coordinate with the singing
