The business owners made the choice to locate their businesses right next to the tracks. Didn't they realize that trains are loud? The dance instructor in the news story leaves the back door open and complains about the loud train horns. Pure stupidity.

So then why aren't cars required to blow horns at every intersection they approach? Every year, 350,000 people are injured and 50,000 are killed in car crashes. Every year, 1,200 people are killed at railroad crossings.

What happens when the gates malfunction and a train comes by and the gates aren't down? If your gonna cry about the noise the train makes don't live my the tracks. And if you are gonna shut up and deal with it...

She says that they are a lot of trains, yet they say that there are only 20 trains a day! Unless you're dancing all day that's only one or two trains during a dance session! Also in my town the train blows the horn all the tin and nobody complains! Not even the restraints that are literally right next to the crossing! The music in that dance studio was also very quiet. They should turn up the volume a bit. THE HORN IS MATTER OF SAFETY, not annoying your dance studio. LET THE HORN BLOW!

Well, if the city sets up a no horn zone, they become liable if an accident occurs at the crossing. One of these days, some City is going to get sued massively and you will see the no train horn zones start disappearing like crazy. It’s only a matter of time. It’s a dangerous gamble for cities to do this.

I prefer trains blow their whistles on railroad crossings to warn people and vehicles to not cross the railroad tracks when trains is coming. Quiet zones should not exist in my humble opinion even if trains disturbing people when they are in bed for a good night sleep or they're working, learning, playing in daytime. This is a question of safety because if a motorist decide to not obey to the grade crossing signals to pass before the train passes.

    • @TheCandoRailfan

What can be more unsafe than dumb drivers/pedestrians? Exactly. If the lights are flashing, and the bell is ringing, then you are suppost to stop, horn or no horn. If dumb drivers decide to run the crossing, then its their problem.
We have plenty of quiet zones here in Winnipeg. Many of them don't even have ANY arms. Yet, it works out fine.

    • @Yesterday5656
      @Yesterday5656 10 років тому

But many try to run the gates, as you see on this video, hence the added need for horns, inconvenient as they may be to some people.

    • @TheCandoRailfan
      @TheCandoRailfan 10 років тому

      Eric Cooper
If they run the crossing/go around the gates, then it's their problem.
We have plenty of crossings with no horn, which have one arm for each direction. Drivers almost never go around the arms. At crossings with no arms, often drivers will go through but whatever.

This is like an example of one of those people you just want to punch in the face.
Yeah you can't stop a train from not blowing horns at a crossing. That's like passing an ordinance that cars should use blinkers when changing direction anymore. That's just asking for an incident. If you don't like it, move! Asking drivers to not blow horns at a crossing is laughable and they'll lay on the horn even more, just out of spite. They're not gonna be responsible for hitting someone or something if they can help it and someone can't tell them otherwise, especially some stupid sign.

I was here with Mr Allen Smith when the Amtrak train came through Lakeland that day and I was glad that I got to meet him I would have to say let the horns blow because they are trying to provide safety warning and letting people know they are coming through... active RR crossings are not good enough because sometimes they don't always work properly and they can malfunction and that can spell potential disaster in the future for motorists and railroad crews keep the horns blowing!!!

I don’t know about the state of FL but in the state of IL all school buses are required to stop in front of the gates and listen to horns to see if there’s a train coming.Whenever I come from school (the bus goes across the train tracks to get to the bus stops. This is not a no horn zone) and bus driver rolls up to the front of the train tracks, Opens the doors , Listens carefully to a horn.Beside there should be the horn because Amtrak’s pass there and Amtrak’s can’t stop quick they take a while.Anyways the train tracks that are by my house (also the ones that my bus goes across) a Metra passes by there and Metra is pretty much an Amtrak cause it’s a high speed train that carries people and has muliple stops and it has the same gates as Amtrak’s do.Also can you heart this comment Alan? Thanks It would be much appropriated!

About three years ago, the next town over from me had residents trying to silence the horns and bells along the CP freight line right in behind their houses. They wanted to town to pay for all of the upgrades and nothing out of their pocket. They claimed they never knew there was a rail line in behind their houses when they bought them (umm, Google Maps anyone?). Then it was found out the residents wanted to get more money for their houses and that was the real reason for the silencing. The community went into an uproar against these residents in social media and in the newspapers; nobody wanted their tax dollars to pay for that street's benefit. .The town, who would have paid for the majority of the costs, also found this out and said NO to the bells and whistle silence request. Result: area is safe due to the noises of the trains. No more requests for that area of town have been received since.

It appears to me, as a Brit, that level crossings in America really are inadequate. Whilst they remain that way trains should have to blow their horns, that I'm not disputing.
The below is going to sound a bit biased because of where I'm from, but it's my ha'pence on the subject.
If officials took a look at British automatic level crossings, which are a lot safer and only require a short blast of the horn during daylight hours (no horns during hours of darkness), they would see that, in urban areas, they are closed off on all sides to prevent any trespasses. In rural areas you tend to get "half-barrier" crossings with barrier covering only the left-hand side of the road (it would be the right elsewhere but we drive on the left). They also hold a signal at red until the barriers are fully lowered, which is when they'll show either green, amber, or double amber (depends on which signal block the preceding train is in)
I'm not saying that British crossing don't have accidents, because they do, but they tend to be the fault of pedestrians or drivers with brain fade.
There are plenty of videos of UK level crossings on YT so I'm not going to link to any of them, but a quick search would show you.

Horns are meant to alert people that a train is approaching the crossing. Lakeland City has pass a law which prohibits the use of horns. If an accident which is not cause by stupidity, the city will have wish that it didn't pass the law. I assumed that some lawyers will assume that the city is a fault for the accident because of some people wanting to have some quiet.

I love the horns and it doesn't make sense not to blow. Especially near crossings that malfunction a lot and have blocked views so people don't know if there's a train and then they go around the barriers and get killed

We have the same problem up here in Saint John, NB. The main crossing in the city comes across a rail bridge heading East and from behind a ridge going West. But the crossing doesn't have any barrier arms and with trains running 24/7 some residents are getting just a little pissed off. But it should be getting better, there are less oil trains now, more is being shipped by sea. If you want see our neck of the woods just look up nbsr on You Tube. Great videos Alan.

In New York, a law passed back in 1910 (!) required cities over a certain size to eliminate most at-grade rail intersections. All because of deaths with a woman, her children and the horses on a snowy night at a rail intersection just south of Parkside Ave. The carriage was buttoned up to keep the lake effect snow out. Thus, the train was never seen. We hardly hear train horns unless CSX or Amtrak is blowing for the intersections to our northwest, and the wind is coming from that way.

I remember reading a message board sometime around 2000 where some BNSF employees were posting about an expired Quiet zone in City of Placentia. These guys were more than happy to blast the horn past the house of the Crazy lady that started the whole thing. They gave her an Extra Helping of Horn.

I just wanna say as a Railfann I think train horns are huge because if we didn’t have train horns there would be way more deaths and when something happens it’s gonna be blamed on the company but I think it’s should be illegal for no train horn zones.

Check with the FRA (Federal Railroad Administration) by Federal Law which is over state and Local laws, all trains by federal law are required to sound horns in intervals 1 mile before crossing and blow horn continually threw crossing, They tried quiet crossing in New Jersey and Federal Government sued our State government Transportation (NJ Transit) for not following Federal law. So notify FRA about this in your town.

Nice coverage. Same discussion here in Raleigh where upscale apartments have just been built beside the tracks and now people have realized that trains have horns. Oops. My mistake to buy here but maybe the trains can just shut up for me! After all, I am important.

People shouldn't go on about train noise. Tracks were there before they were. That's like building a house at the end of a runway and complaining about the noise.

  • @Michael-ou4ph

I'm sorry, but this is too freakin funny.. The bars were blocking the crossing before the train was even in view. If your the type of person to crash through the lowered bars, (that in the video obviously blocked the vehicle traffic), and you only stop because you heard a horn... Well, you shouldn't be driving.

I'm going to be honest I feel like every railroad crossing is going to need a horn because I personally think it's safe. That's how people should know that they are alerted when a train's coming because of the gates what's most important is the horn that goes whatever to make sure that all cars stop immediately.

    Quiet zones have their place.
In urban places like this, quiet zones are an acceptable alternative to standard crossings and horn signals. If the horn needs to be blown, it can be.

I got excited last week over seeing a CSX train in MN ( our line is BNS and that was a first time sighting for me).. we have two crossings in town so the trains blow their horns twice.. some for quite a distance but it don't bother me any. if people hate trains then they shouldn't live next to tracks or buy buildings where there are trains. Horns mean safety!

Personally, I say the railroad should be covered by what's called 'the grandfather clause'. The railroad was there first and if anyone wants to set up shop or buy a house that close to the railroad tracks, they should have been aware of the train horn noise that comes with the tracks and accept it! On a similar note, in Canton, Ohio, a developer bought a large tract of land not far from a mulch manufacturing facility and built some expensive homes and townhouses. The home owners later filed a lawsuit to have the facility shut down due to the stench. The lawsuit was dismissed on the grounds of 'the grandfather clause' and they were told they should have done a little more research before they bought their homes.

I grew up near a major CSX line near a town that also had a major Norfolk-Southern (before that Conrail) line in Ohio not too far from an airport. You hear noise all the time, if not then something else is making noise. Would rather hear the trains and planes rather than hearing the people complaining about them.
