The first photo is wrong. Jackson was wounded on the Mountain Road which is parallel to the road in modern photo. There is a marker showing where he was shot at the site.
Very touching: the poor young chaps with freshly amputated limbs and pain-distorted faces in the shade of the tree, which has grown immensely in the meantime. I wonder what might have become of them after this photo.
Amazing all of this nostalgia for a "perfect" past to be mourned. So long as you didn't step on a rusted nail or catch any one of many diseases that used to kill tons of folks. 🙄
