The friend who originally introduced me to this song was blind. I remember the first time we watched the video together I was trying to tell him all the crazy things happening in real-time. Even just describing the imagery in this song has a huge effect. Still love them to this day!

Toxic relationships are very similar to drug addiction. By the time you realise it's ruining you, it's already too late, and you try to pull yourself away but you can't. It only ends up getting worse and worse. And then suddenly one day, something from within shouts "I need to let you go" and you try once again and this time you actually do it. Best feeling ever, that one!

@@tamrastiffler3285 Amen. Because just like drugs, certain types of toxic relationships can kill you, or at least kill the person you once were.
And plenty of people are unable to overcome either or both before it's too late and they've either wasted and destroyed, or ended their lives.
I wish this song was about 30 minutes longer. There aren't many songs I can listen to over and over...but I can't get enought of this one.

A lot of people say it is not about drugs, but more relationships.... I like to interpret this song about drugs..... Just the other day I celebrated 1 year of sobriety and this song was my quitting song ,,, whenever I felt like I would relapse... I would stick this song and repeat and It would help....thank you maynard for helping me sort my life out :)
👍 Keep up the good work with your sobriety by the way... I relate this song to losing a loved one (be it through a break up or death) and needing something to kill or dull the pain of losing that person and turning to dope. Ultimately, coming to the realization that you're completely dependent on dope and don't use to get high any more but use to feel "normal" because you've grown a wicked tolerance to the drug. Now, you would sell your soul to the devil to make it all go away. How easy would it be if we could just go to your medicine cabinet and drink a magical elixir to kill the pain and kill the ball and chain of drug addiction or just addition in general.
Thank yourself for sorting your life out. You would probably have latched onto anything that pulled you away from that crap. The motivation to fight back is in you, but if it can be personified, materialized.. its more powerful.
That's the best thing about Maynard's music. He leaves it open for interpretation so anyone can take what they want from it and it can fit and help everyone and their situation. One person can get one thing from it, and another something totally different.

This is a very profound song for me. My wife passed from an overdose of opiates coming up on 7years ago, this song helps me deal with living life without her once again Maynard and crew have helped saved my life as well as progress spritually. This song is magical and healing if you just close your mind and take it in. Once again Thank You Maynard and Crew. Peace, Love, and Light my brothers and sisters! Live! Love! (Rinse, Wash, Repeat!!)
So Sorry to hear that bro thank god mine woke up or I might be in the same shoes! She’s been off painkillers for 15yrs and I as well! A terrible thing that shit is! And it’s NOT HARD to become addicted to em my issue was my back still is to this day but off painkillers for a long time thank god!! Smoking does the job just as good lol! I'm sorry for your loss. I lost my husband to an overdose just a month and a half ago. This song is actually on the playlist I made to play at his funeral (I think the playlist is public if anyone wants to give it a listen).
Waiting for the day that I don't have to worry that a stranger will see me crumble. I know it'll come eventually, but the pain is still so fresh.

i think the worm represents the pain inside that causes that deep urge to get high. it can't be satisfied. you cant get rid of it, and even when you finally get high enough, its still right there reminding you that it hurts.

I've been a fan of Tool, A perfect circle, and puscifer for many years and heard a lot of good songs but this song is special to me reminding me of my need to forget someone I loved more than life it's self to some what live a normal life. Thank you god for giving Maynard such an amazing voice It seem like what ever he touches it turns to gold.

This song reminds me of my father. My mother passed when I was born and he never got over her. When he passed, after years of alcohol addiction, he was cremated and buried with her casket! It really makes me understand what he was feeling! (begging bury me right beside you) Thank you MJK.

For those of you wondering, Ian Miller did these animations. If you like his style just look him up on youtube. He has a lot of abstract stuff.
I hear the Cure influence in this song. But anything Maynard does , I am fan. And drug addiction and alcoholism was my life for 22 years. ANd I lived and breathed the animation in my reality. My addiction lead me to many scary and unbelievable memories to harness. But through recovery, they are now apart of my story. And seeing this vid, is a great reminder of why I never want to return to addiction.

my big brother died when I was young and I took it very hard. i sampled many of the devils potions trying to let him go. i was a master in the art of self medication and eventually i got bit. im much older now with 8 years clean. Most of the comments are talking about the song being about drugs or a bad relationship but i just wanted to say that it can be interpreted in other ways too.FYI anyone who has lost a brother should listen to Dear Brother from puscifer

To me, this song is about love and/or drugs... Either are interchangeable.
For me personally, it was love. That kind of relationship that is perfect, yet impossible... Doomed, star-crossed, whatever you want to call it.
The love that you want but can't have... The love that hurts when you think about it but even after years still tugs on your heart.
Shit that you wouldn't want to trade for anything bc it felt amazing and was perfect but at the same time, you wish you had never felt bc it hurts so much to not be with that person.
Same goes with drugs... they make you feel amazing til they are gone or you fuck up your whole life...
You love those times you were high but wish you could forget that feeling since you are ALWAYS missing it....

I can't stop watching this video. The song is incredible already on it's own, but the art, my God, the art is just amazing. It's definitely very Keenan-esque, and I'm surprised that it wasn't his own art direction that created it. It definitely captures the feel and the vibe of the song perfectly. Maynard is a true poet if you truly listen , not hear, listen. This song in particular hits the center of my soul. Needing to let something go yet it seems impossible, it can tear someone inside out. Wish more people would listen to Maynard, he teaches us. Just the very sound of his voice puts me at ease.
This song has such a bittersweet story attached to it. Starting out, he is talking about something that takes the pain of loss away. Then slowly you realize that it isn't the person he's trying to get over, but what took away the pain in the first place. MJK does it again. He always has lyrics that you really have to pay attention to to understand the meaning behind it all.

thread4souls On a lighter note....btw...we have puppies....I will post a vid of them as soon as I am fully rested....she had them on sat morn....and last night was the first night I slept all the way through....she was waking me up to play every night as if to say ....look I am a dog again....play with me...and so of course I have to play with her...:)..and then go running back to her pups to nurse....such a special time...but so exhausting....keeping her food intake up....she is real tiny bodied...but all is well....I just cant make vids when my energy is low....so soon ...hope to make you smile....:)

I remember showing this song to a close friend of mine. They knew I was going through addiction due to grief. I was told the video & song was disgusting… after cutting ties. You realize a lot of things. I realized she wasn’t solely talking about the song but, me as well. That “I need to let you go” carried a lot of weight for me.

As an avid fan of maynard this speaks to me on so many levels. Being a recovering addict this is scary the emotions of the sond mixed with the amzingly accurate references in the visuals
I found this song years ago when I was going through a long drawn out break up. I never thought the pain would go away. The depression was literally crippling. I'm ashamed of how long it took, honestly, but here I am nearly a decade later with several stories to tell about life.

I have a friend with a crack problem who got out of it, it is possible. I dont' know their situation but guided meditation might help, along with a week or two in the mountains. sorry if this is entirely unhelpful.
I tried for 4 months to help. Didn't happen. Took care of their kids, of them and kept the house clean. All for nothing. Some people can't be helped:( I helped myself, and her get off opiates. Myself, by myself. It's strength of character. They're weak! They are the past. Eventually, you gotta focus on you.

It is. Especially when the psychosis begins and you have to listen about people living in walls and "rape" rooms and aliens. And alien writing on the walls when it's just a 4yo practising her alphabet and numbers Ugh. It's a mind fuck to watch. Most people don't know the reality of serious drug addiction, and I hope they never do.
Anthony Gilbert I know this post is old, but felt compelled to reply. I struggled with Crack a d heroin both for several years, nothin compares to a speedball rush, so I sort of know your plague. Most people require the slap in the face of rock bottom before they'll even consider waking up, sometimes that's not even enough. I finally decided it was time, my wife, couldn't explain here all the horrors we endured together to cling to our addictions, wasn't ready to quit. I'm still reaching out to her in hopes she will come round, but looks futile. Bottom line is nothing, absolutely nothing will help someone who isn't ready or has had enough utility cutoffs, evictions, empty Christmas trees, ect. It's a difficult journey and must be initiated by the user. Most hope to you, I know your pain.

You tried and tried to kill the pain away... The pain of addiction, loss, UNREQUITED love, the list goes on and on. You find a solution.... To kill it all away... That pain that feeling of impending doom that feeling something bad is about to happen. And it helps but only for a little while and soon you find yourself reasoning with that voice inside that it isn't the issue with the solution but "the problem" that is driving you. Its you, YOU ARE THE PROBLEM just like your shadow... You cant escape your shadow can you? That "ugly thing" inside you is at the end of the day PART OF YOU. Its not objective its fact and escaping yourself for most is the most satisfying feeling they will ever feel....escape.... Escape....escape. Or..... Except. Something even harder to do in the end. Love maynard and everything he does !!!!

@@jamesstaggs7591 Please. It has very little to do with misinformation. I've never met a heroin/opioid (or coke, meth, crack, etc) addict who wasn't very well aware of the dangers and addictive nature of their drug of choice BEFORE they began using it. [Not including pain pill addicts who were misled and misinformed by their doctors. But even they eventually became aware and were aware of the dangers of switching to heroin, for those in that circumstance].
Now, did they think/know how quickly and horribly their addiction would spiral and often destroy or end their life? Mostly no, but that's not due to misinformation.
Mental health issues come into play more so than anything you mentioned. Many addicts became drug users/abusers as a (fucked up) form of self medicating.
I'm sure there are several factors at play. I dont deny that. I dont think there is any solving it. People like to get high. We like to search. It's deeply etched into who we are as a species. We will always want more.
