    Mike Boyle is so legit that my college's exercise science injury prevention professor recommended him as recommended reading alongside Gray Cook and Stuart McGill. He's also super nice. I emailed him with a question on Christmas day and he answered me a few hours later. Hard working man!

    Great video. I love doing goblet squats. I wish there were video's like this around when I was struggling to back squat years ago. I probably wouldn't have injured my lower back at the bottom of the exercise when I reached technical failure. I never used huge weight but did squat 20 reps per set. Goblet squats are much safer especially for taller athletes. Thanks.

    I enjoyed the instruction for that. My toes naturally come off the ground when I squat & putting dumbs under the heels fixes that problem. Mr. Boyle went into all 3 position to get the perfect squat. I was noticing that I was leaning forward & was thinking of ways to correct that problem and I think I found it. Thanks!

    That is a good place to start. I prefer them being shoulder width. If you place your feet either too far apart or too close together you will end up restricting the movement pattern and not seeing the full benefit of the exercise, while possibly incurring injury.

  • @1roncho
    @1roncho 11 років тому

    Could I also ask, does having my legs further apart or closer to engage different muscles? How far apart should they be? Someone said to me a bit wider than shoulder width.

      try a front squat or zercher squat

    • @therealyanhuang
      @therealyanhuang 9 років тому

      yea you can try doing front squat or zercher, but I don think it will really "solve" the inherent issue of why you cant effectively do a good backsquat.
      I would actually go back on working your anterior core, to hold the trunk up right, and also work on releasing the tighter erector spinal/back muscles that cant seem to extend your spine upright.
      but then again, i believe it has got to do with your hip mobility issues.
      work on posterior pelvic tilt, and keep releasing your hip flexors group, mainly your psoas.
      use resistance bands also,place over your ASIS, so bands is behind you ( aka you have a line of action of force pulling posterior of hips, but the idea is to try to keep your trunk stable as you are doing your backsquat )
      last but not least, work on the breathing. Breathing is often overlooked.

    Its not the end of the world if you're hinging at the hip, just keep core tight(shoulders down and back and lots of air inside) and the weight light, and congrat youself that you are even doing this move to full depth like you did as a kid so naturally.

    • @CounterCultureHealthcch1821
      @CounterCultureHealthcch1821 8 років тому

      You save you can do calve raises with a decent amount of weight but are still having some trouble with getting your squatting form down. I would look to see if you have shortened calve muscles from all the reps of calve raises. As Mike describes in the video, some times poor squatting form comes in the way of ankle immobility, which is caused mostly by shortened calves and hamstrings. For you I would try the blocking technique. See if that doesnt fix the issue

    • @Salihnoah
      @Salihnoah 8 років тому

      Practice squatting with something behind you like a bench or platform. If thats too low you can add something for height. Most clubs have those blue pads, or even a bosu. Also there's nothing wrong with just putting a stability ball against the wall and doing wall squats. Or you might find it easier to just simply widen your feet and turn them out a bit. There's nothing wrong with that as long as your knees and ankles aren't completely collapsing or pronating inwards. And keep in mind the squat isn't the best lower body exercise, there's no such thing. It might be a good idea for you to work on your glutes quads and hamstrings as components before trying squats. Also it's always a good idea to make sure your ankles are balanced. You could have a lack of range of motion in your ankles due to weak anterior tibialis leading to lack of dorsiflexion which completely messes up a squat. You can find plenty of good dorsiflexion videos on UA-cam

    If you are a low bar squatter, you can't squat how he does. Only hi bar squatters can. He is only teaching half of the picture. Whether you low bar or hi bar, you keep the bar over the center of your foot. Weightlifting you need the vertical back. Most power lifters squat low bar.
