    People often imagine that if they lived in another century that they'd be the wealthy person with maids but most of us would be one of these maids desperate for work. How many women were taken advantage of by their employers or spent their youth working difficult manual labor? The sad fact that Marie Baday's naked body wasn't even covered in the photos and the one woman wasn't believed shows attitudes towards poor working women.

      I saw a video the other day where this girl did an “unpopular opinion” TT where she said she would love to live in the 1940s. Someone commented along the lines of: “in the 1940s your opinion wouldn’t have been relevant or even an option”. Touché.

    Marie should have definitely been held accountable for each and every one of those murders honestly, since it was her idea from the start! She was so manipulative and mentally/emotionally abusive, and with the background Martin had endured as a child, he held onto any ounce of affection she gave. So many unnecessary deaths and tragedies.

      @nandini6302 yeah, they were more skeptical about women being murderers back then. I really wish France had a better safety net and Mariane wasn't so goddamned selfish that she turned Martin into a serial killer. He sacrificed so much, he deserved a normal and stable life.

      @@Neku628 I mean, he wasn't innocent either, yes he went through some bizzare shit but the way he murdered and assaulted all those poor women and to think about the one who got thrown in jail while being pregnant, it just breaks my heart. I honestly don't think you can excuse such brutal crimes no matter how fucked once life has been. And all these things as still happening now, the world can be so bizarre and scary at times

    • @haileybalmer9722
      @haileybalmer9722 Рік тому +7

      Yeah, that poor cuddly rapist and murderer probably wouldn't have done any of that if that evil, greedy woman hadn't told him to!
      I'm being sarcastic, I can't believe you're trying to say she was the one at fault. This is literally why we have the charge of aiding and abetting.

    • @amandaedmonds9699
      @amandaedmonds9699 Рік тому +17

      @@haileybalmer9722 I never once said she was solely at fault. I said she should have been held accountable for more than she was. Martin was letting people go, and she said that he needed to kill them to take care of any witnesses. He most likely had developmental delays due to the trauma and abandonment he went through as a child. That doesn't excuse his actions, but it helps explain them. His wife was aware of how well she could manipulate him, as evidenced by her trying to pressure him into marrying her via tempting him with sex, and I'm sure she got pleasure of sorts from the murders just as much as Martin did. I see aiding and abetting more as an after-thought charge, vs someone who is encouraging the act to start with. Who knows, Martin still may have become a rapist and murderer later in life, or he may not have if he had stayed at the mansion. I'm just saying that she was definitely a factor in these particular crimes.

      Same. He had a really rotten childhood and who knows how much psychological trauma he suffered from witnessing his father’s death at 4. Not too mention that it was Marie who orchestrated what he was to do after the attack on that girl and he only did it because she was so aggressively evil towards him. I don’t think she even liked him, from what I am hearing she saw someone she could control. You can’t help but feel awful for him despite the crimes he had committed. It wouldn’t be that hard to come to the theory that Martin probably wouldn’t have even murdered anyone if he hadn’t met Marie to begin with. He was only a petty thief who did it to survive. Her? She was truly evil.

She had my great grandfather while working in a household and she never named a father for him. At that point she went to work at a different estate where she met a msn who also worked there and they got married and moved back to her hometown. My grandmother said she was as a sweet woman and as beautiful as an angel. So many women have gone though the same.

    This whole story is equal parts horror and farce. On the one hand, you've got a serial r-pist and murderer who killed a bunch of women and had to watch his father being clumsily executed, but then there's bits of the story that wouldn't be out of place in a dark comedy film, like how he basically got nagged into being a murderer by his wife, the bit where he botched the garotting and ended up making the victim facepalm repeatedly rather than strangling her, and the Austrian executioner messing up the execution and having to awkwardly say to the audience "Uh... We don't have enough room to get the horses up to speed to off this guy. Has anyone got an axe I could borrow?"

    I would have been to freaked out by his appearance to get in a conversation with him muchless go anywhere with him. That was definitely a serial killer and hes not mentioned at all when they talk about serial killers from way back in the day. I'd like to know the exact number.

    He couldn't have had cleft lip or palate as he would have starved to death in childhood, as they had no way of any type of reconstructive surgeries as plastic surgery was only in it it infancy from world war 1 onwards.. He may have had a minor facial deformity or a micro cleft, a cleft that repairs itself in womb

    I really like the old cases so much, they're my favorite to listen to and learn about! I don't mean that in a bad way cause of course this is murder and other despicable things we're talking about but y'all know what I mean, lol. Marie-Anne definitely should have been held accountable for her part! She may not have killed anyone but she was still an accomplice.
    Please do more cases from back in the day, you're so awesome at it and do cases a lot of other True Crime story tellers don't do. Mr. Ballen is probably one of the only other ones that tell stories I haven't heard of, ever. But, I still love and respect ALL of you ladies that do this!! 🫶

    Good evening, Ms. S😊MMER! Thank you for another entertaining, educational experience! Don't fret about mispronunciations. As long as you can say "Je ne veux pas être dans ta secte," you'll be OK. It means, "I don't want to be in your cult." 😆

    Humanity has been capable of some truly sick things and I'm ashamed of some of these barbaric practices of the past (such as public executions). What the f is wrong with people to do that even to a traitor?? I cant imagine the trauma that caused to Martin as a child. To his mother. My god.

    Anyway, french gal here and your pronunciation was really good! ❤ I imagine it was difficult at times. But remember: french is all for aesthetics lol

    I love older stories! People were sometimes more crazy then, than they are now. I've never heard of Kitsch but I'm definitely going to try it. Those shampoo amd conditioner bars really intrigue me as do the body wash bars. I think it would be much easier to wash my granddaughters' hair and less waste, too. I can't wait to try them. Thank you for the story. So far it's cool as all get out and definitely one I haven't heard before. I hope you do more of these.
    Oh Lord! They did the old drawn and quartered thing on Pierre. Ugh! Then chopped him up alive? That poor child having to see that! 4 years old. Smdh. It's a wonder he didn't turn out worse than he did. Not that he wasn't bad enough. Just wow. This is crazy!
