- This video explains another fixed phrase from Chuang Tzu. Chuang Tzu argues that to enslave oneself for pleasure is stupid. It simply would not achieve happiness by doing this!

I did not totally understand the meaning of 役in this context. The dictionary defines it as “forced labor, service or servant.” So if I understand you correctly, the phrase means: “the mind becomes the servant of concrete things?” Please keep up the good work-your explications of classical Chinese are most illuminating!
役 literarily means to use someone to serve one's own purpose. For instance, it is often used together with the character for slave 奴 as 奴役 means to enslave someone. 形 here refers to tangible pleasures of the body in this particular textual context. So the phrase of 心爲形役 literarily means the heart and mind become the body's slave. So I interpret as to enslave the mind and heart for tangible pleasure. There is a very long tradition promoting this Taoist/Daoist value ever since the third century AD when scholars sometimes were forced to serve a ruler that they would not accept, especially with the rulers who were not ethnically Han Chinese such as the Mongolians or the Manchu of the last Qing Dynasty.
