13:05 if you’re referring to the n-word as being the rhyme here then that isn’t actually the main rhyme, it’s the syllable that comes before it (fly / live / side / etc.)
great reaction as always, can really tell you enjoy music without coming across as pretetious. what i would like to say about the comment 13:04 the main rhyme scheme is in the other words: "in my eyes" / "touched the sky" / "will to survive" / "low tides". the way she anunciates them makes them rhyme. idk how to rap but i feel like Simz repeats the same word to keep the pace of the song
Robert Johnson mentioned on Flowers was a blues musician who has a lot of speculation around his life and death. He was known as one of the best blues musicians ever, and his career lasted only 7 months before he passed without any known cause of death. He followed the voodoo religion, and his songs added to his mystery, like “Me And The Devil”. To this day, a lot of his life is a mystery Basquiat is one of the most loved painters in history, and a most successful and iconic Black painter, who was extremely honest about everything, including oppression and his mental health, and in interviews they would always center his anger, paint him to be an angry person without ever caring why, or recognizing him for his greatness. He ended up dying from a heroin overdose which i believe may have been suicide. Jamila Woods and Saba have a song together called “Basquiat” sung and rapped from his perspective, to really understand him. “They wanna see me angry. They wanna see my bare my teeth” “My teeth are not employed, you can’t police my joy”. His art style was also super unique and abstract, and one of his paintings sold for 110 million in 2017 GREY Area is an amazing album, i think she raps even better on it than on Simbi, and though Simbi is amazing and more epic and grand, i would probably say Grey Area is even better. As for her earlier music, it’s good / great but Grey Area is definitely the album where she really developed her sound and art into something great and fully realized. Chronixx, the reggae singer featured on Wounds, is one of the most relevant and greatest reggae singers of this generation, makes truly great and life giving music on his own. Him and Koffee (her Rapture EP is a legendary blend of hip hop and reggae) are the artists at the front of reggae right now, especially Koffee. All of Michael Kiwanuka’s music is as beautiful and powerful as his feature on Flowers. He makes soul music and his last album KIWANUKA you would love, full of live instrumentation from guitar to piano. Classic and really emotional album with a stunning voice Cant wait to play this new Simz album Last note: with your mention of labels and them wanting women to always be naked, that does exist and is sometimes a problem to be talked about, but for some female artists that’s just a part of who they are and is great too! Nicki, Cardi, Janet, etc. Love when female artists do either, whatever is true to them as long as its true to them. Because i mean we all love to be hot and embrace that. (I know you know that already but just felt like adding to that rant with the positive flip side)
I LOVE SIMBI (the album) and was so suprised and happy to see a new one today. Decided to do same as you - listen to grey area instead earlier today and loved it. The timing couldn’t be more perfect with this video. - Was also suprised that there was more albums before this. I’m convinced I don’t have any unique experiences
Bob please consider shifting every album forward one week and making this Friday the new Little Simz, it’s very good I promise I’m a big fan of older classics like Public Enemy and Black Star, but it’s fine to push them back a week because they’ll still happen, just a little later
HEY BOB! I found your channel a few days ago and I cannot stop watching, I love your vibe, the way you dissect the lyrics, everything about it is amazing, keep up the good work man
I'm mostly here to re-experience classics with you Bob, but I'm so glad you introduced me to Little Simz (and Inflo's) music! This was one of my favorite reactions so far, can't wait for No Thank You
This Album made me a huge fan of Little Simz I still believe this is her best album for me and shows just how great of a songwriter she is I would recommend listening to more UK artists eg Skepta or another example Dave he released a great album that year also called Psychodrama. Anyway thanks for reacting Bob.
@@zackmackin1131 idk man skepta has better wordplay imo Dave talks about some srs shit which is cool but beats are boring a lot of the time. Skepta got a more varied sound (which he was a pioneer of) and more varied subject matter. Street shit, introspective shit, funny shit etc etc
Glad Therapy was your fav, mine too! Love what you said about the way the beat fits the mood of the song. Pressure, Therapy, and Sherbet Sunset is one of my favorite 3 song runs on any album
Just want to add at 13:00 that she isn't saying that for the rhyming structure, shes saying it for rhythm its like a precision vocal. The rhyme is the word she says before: fly, live, side, eyes, sky, survive, tides. Its a nitpick but it intensely annoys me when people cant notice the literal previous word is the thing the entire verse is ryhming around.
Hey Bob. If you wanna listen to another Earl Sweatshirt album, I’d highly recommend Some Rap Songs. It’s a very brief album, but still a lot to enjoy and digest
I remember knowing of little simz for a while but never really diving in properly and then I stumbled upon this album a year after it released and it changed my life lol
Wow what a reaction! Still my favourite album this. On 101 FM when you mentioned video game music, Grime beats in the early 2000s were often made on a PS1. Also Grime sets were played on pirate radio stations from the top of flats (block of apartments).. she mentions Kano, who is an OG from that scene. I really recommend his most recent project Hoodies All Summer, the production and storytelling is top tier.
Dang you are so right, exactly how I feel about THE little simz, just like you said she brings such a "she seems like she's having fun, she's pretty down to earth, and tries to stay real" and I agree that she operates autonomously, counter to the music industry, like kendrick and tyler and earl sweatshirt at their best.
You mentioned that you loved Inflo’s production, he’s actually produced lots more music with Cleo Sol under the name SAULT. Some of my favourite albums are ‘Untitled (Rise)’ and ‘5’. I’d definitely recommend them if you liked the sound of this and simbi!
I am still waking up and will have to finish the reaction later today because of work (blah), so I will have a more thought-out comment this evening. But I just had to say not only is "Just a Girl" an amazing track but the whole album Tragic Kingdom is actually a classic. Highly influential in my younger teenage years. I think I will throw on that album on my way to work today. lol And I won't lie, I have never heard this album before and the production so far is fantastic. Reminds me of the NERD "In search of" album, sonically. Which is an album that isn't highly talked about, but is also very influential. But for sure excited to finish the reaction later today. Have an amazing Monday/week everyone!
Thank you for choosing Simbi she’s so good. I think you would LOVE ❤ The ArchAndroid by Janelle Monae. It’s truly a masterpiece, there’s so much mythology to dig into in the lyrics and excellent genre-blending instrumentation on it! 🌃🤹🏾♀️🎙
Bob in defense to people who use the same last word to rhyme as a motif, like 90% of rappers when they do this are normally also rhyming the word (or sometimes words) before the repeating words so in Boss she is rhyming nice, fly, live, eyes, sky etc in a multi syllables rhyme pattern
Since you love Inflo so much I recommend listening to KIWANUKA by Michael Kiwanuka, who’s featured on the closing track of this album. It’s more of a soul record since he’s a singer, but it’s absolutely fantastic.
I get what you meant by how you dislike when artists finish each line with the same word "to keep the rhyme scheme" but its really to make it flow on the beat better. If you look at the lines and take the n word at the end on the first verse of "Boss" it still rhymes anyway. Its more to emphasize each line or keep it flowing. I LOVE this album btw and I enjoyed your reaction a lot Bob!!

about the lines ending on the same word thing: I get what you mean, but in this case to me the rhyme feels more like it's getting carried through the second to last word and the way she says it, "live" - "eyes" - "sky" - (sur)vive" - "tides", and the last word kind of just amplifies the aggression. That's how I feel about it. :)
