Honestly, Sakamoto is a mix of Bayonetta and Mary Poppins or Nanny Mcphee. He can do everything perfectly like it's magic and does it in a very Bayonetta sexy and cool style mixed with Mary Poppins' magical perfection. And like Nanny Mcphee, when people don't want him but need him, then he must stay. When people want him, but not longer need him, then he has to leave, and that's what I thought the ending was trying to tell us. He left at the end because he helped those who desperately needed his help (specially the bullies who were starting to get into a life of crime), even if they hated him at first. When they started wanting him, he left because they no longer needed him, and so he probably moved on to helping people somewhere else. Granted a lot of people loved him since the beginning (specially the grills), but a lot of them didn't and at the end of the show most of his class and school, including teachers, benefited from him being there with them. This Nanny Mcphee comparison doesn't apply to every single interaction he had in this anime but it did in most of them and it definitely did in his interactions at school.
Yeah, it's the song version of the poem 'Der Erlkoenig' I'm german and the poem is quite known in germany, it's about a father riding with his sick son home but on the way his illness gets worse and when they finally reach home the child is dead
I believe why he cared for the dying bird is that he related to the bird due to his own situation of death and not wanting to be alone and unsatisfied.
@@DragonMasterGold I noticed not many people mention the fact hes a famous-ish actor. No one actually knows him except for the 1 year he attended the school. I think he realized the mom might have started catching on so he left her with a gift considering she's a fan of his work. The teachers probably let him speak because seperate from his dying situation he was also famous. If he wasn't truly dying maybe the Student Sakamoto died because he had to return to his acting career and he might have faked symptoms of an illness so when he left they would believe he passed away sometime after going to America. He hides his identity as an actor by pulling a Clark Kent. Maybe the reason he hid his face in pie wasn't the fact that he was crying from dying in the future but the fact that he'd never have a normal life like them and had to leave behind. the people hes met. Sure he might have impressed them but they left him with a taste of the life he can never have, friends and memories that seem like a work of fiction. Not being able to count all the holes in the nurses ceiling might also be a reference to working in a studio where there is no ceiling because most stages don't have one unless absolutely necessary.
I hope I'm not the only one, but I actually, embarrassingly enough, cried the moment I saw Sakamoto's sad face. This entire show got me shook. I built this entire connection with him and all the characters for 11 episodes, and suddenly I'm feeling the same pain his classmates felt URGHH, SO SAD IT HAD TO END! Sakamoto was really cool, and we never got to learn his first name!
I think that's a normal enough reaction, i got little choked up my self and i generally never get to that point. It really is a sad moment, not just for the characters saying good bye to the good times, but also the viewer saying good bye to the series, and maybe to one of their favorite characters. We also never needed Sakamoto's last name, since it was in are hearts all along.

Sakamoto is actually dying? Seems pretty legit... In the manga Sakamoto is seen inside a school locker like a corpse in a casket referencing him dying. If this was the case it would make sense as to why the school would have a freshmen be the speaker for the graduating senior class. Also, Mars migration project was just a lie to cover up his real reasons for leaving. For starters, Sakamoto himself states that it is currently impossible in perhaps his "lifetime" from Episode 10 while at karaoke. So, why would he get called for such a project if it can't even be done? Not to mention, why would NASA ask Sakamoto of all people and why now? Wouldn't it be smarter to wait until he graduates? (Episode 13 is NOT canon BTW) And if that wasn't enough, when Hayabusa asks if he had any regrets his answer implies that he has been to the nurse's office a lot of times over. Hayabusa is the only one who realizes the Mars tale was a lie for he even called him out on it and Sakamoto did not even deny it. This all leads to the fact as to why Sakamoto is so amazing. Through the whole show, he hides the fact he is dying by being cool and fabulous in front of everyone. Always being there for others while always living his life to the fullest. Why do you think he never wanted people knowing about his personal life or past? And through all that, we see the first sign of emotion from our savior Sakamoto. During the last few minutes of the episode as he looks back at his classmates we see him actually begin to tear up. But our Sakamoto doesn't want them to be sad! So what does he do?! He covers his upper face with pie so as to prevent anyone from noticing he was crying... Some other great points From /u/Exodor54 - During Episode 11 he said he had never seen snow on the ground... Could be because he was always in the hospital or similar because of a disease. From /u/ThatsaNottaMyBoat - His farewell address seems to address this too, talking about how you respond to a choice forced upon you by charging straight ahead, and how if you can no longer believe in yourself to believe in your friends, and so on. Basically the whole thing explains how he has been facing death by living. And his talk with Fukase "If it were me I'd jump into the night sea and search for a new continent," is another metaphor for how he approaches death. MORE STUFF Well, if this wasn't enough for you /u/Nathan561 just put the icing on this sad cake theory for us all.. The song Sakamoto sings in episode 10 is called Der Erlkönig. This song was originally a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and tells the tale of a boy and his father riding towards their farm on horseback. As they are riding through the night the boy beings to see supernatural occurrences happening all around him. He calls to his father but he sadly does not see any of the things his son sees and just tries to reassure him nothing is there, just the fog, trees, and the rustling of leaves. As the father tries to calm his son he screams in agony saying he has been stuck and is in major pain. The father picks up the pace and tries to get home as fast as possible....Finally, after riding through the night they finally made it to their destination, but it was too late. As they arrive the father looks down and sees that his son had passed away in his arms. Now, if we look at this in literal terms the "supernatural occurrences" could be hallucinations from being extremely ill. Especially for children, it is normal for the extremely ill to see and hear things that are normally not there. The father was probably trying to get his son medical attention ASAP which explains the night journey. The reason Sakamoto picked this song is because his relationship with the boy from the story! Like him, Sakamoto also has a deadly illness and feels the need to express his sorrow and grief in the only way he can and also because he never expresses it through his actions in public he does it in song... And finally According to /u/Skelliie the lyrics to the OP might actually be hinting towards this theory. Here are some lines that were translated.. "Raise your head and elegantly judge the gloom that grabs your gaze." "Go with the flow as you defy with a cool looking face." "Hardship is a bouqet that decorates your days." For the tear part you have a good point with him covering it with pie, I forgot the fat guys name, the close friend of sakamoto covered his face with pie when the naked dude said we promised not to cry and so he didn't with covering himself with pie and that relates to what sakamoto did when he began to exit the school
Nami Sato, author of Sakamoto Desu ga? actually finished the story quite early, she was diagnosed with Lung Cancer at last stage and was working on both this one and her last manga, Migi and Dali. Fearing she will die before completing, she rushed the story of Sakamoto Desu ga and finished it in the way that raised speculations about Sakamoto to complete Migi and Dali. So, Sato san wanted to portray her death in the way that she went with a bang.
If he really was dying, maybe when he was being distant with everyone at the school because he didn't want them to feel any sorrow over his death as real good friends, which is why even he got kinda sad when he saw his classmates faces for the last time
Didnt the "if i made a movie" episode also prove this? The girl who takes pics of Sakamoto explained in her story that a ghost or spirit followed Sakamoto. Could be another example of death following him.
If this theory is correct, sakamoto acting asa cool person might be because even though he will die, his classmates will never forget him. Sakamoto realized that if he is not forgotten by everyone and even though he would die, he will feel like he did not die in the first place

They are comprised of people living, an endless cycle of interacting, influencing each other and parting ways. Sakomoto once stated that he went to a private school before attending his current one. Could it be that he went to a normal school to get a taste or experience the life of a normal student? This small piece of information can probably explain his background, Is that why he is so talented in every aspect he has come face to?
I mean most the people i know who went to private school actually fell behind when they transferred to a regular school since it was such a culture shock. It is probably a factor to it, but I would assume it would need more then that.

It turned out to be stomach cancer. He went through surgery and lost weight a lot, but he still left this world in the end with some regrets on not being able to draw again (the hospital nurse forcefully took away his drawing tools to give himself more rests). YuGiOh author also nearly passed away during the end of YGO manga serialisation. He got hazier and hazier day after day, and he ended up vomiting nearly a cup of blood (Normal people can't stand such blood loss amount). He didn't tell the fans until he planned to rearrange manga chapters 5 years later. He also felt regret about his inability to convey better manga story during the final moment.

Nope Nope nope nope no. I refuse to believe that Sakamoto is dying/died. He is too cool for death, He is just off spreading his coolness elsewhere because for some reason he had to leave. That's basically my point, we might and that is a very slim might and I'm talking year and years down the line at the point pretty much everyone is not debating it anyone and it is on no one's minds. I even doubt that though, so basically my point was that I will never believe he is dead because it will never be confirmed and if it ever is it will be so far down the line that I'll probably have almost forgotten that it was ever up for debate whether he dies or lives. I can't think of any off the top of my head but I could have sworn there was a case or two where the creator of a game or anime left the ending ambiguous but like 10-15 years later they came out and confirmed what they wanted it mean and by that point there won't be much fun in debating it anymore,in my opinion. All that is besides the point the mangaka confirming it one way or the other was more of a statement like "I won't do X until Y has happened" without actually meaning it in any way shape or form. In my opinion he did have something wrong with him, it wasn't a deathly illness, it wasn't anything that severe but it was severe enough that he had to leave his friends behind and go else where, like somewhere better suited to treat whatever illness he might have. Heck he might even have some disorder that makes it hard for him to show his emotions and by the end of the show/manga he had slowly gotten better at showing them but that would be so out of character for him that he didn't want his classmates his friends to see him show emotion but like I said it is so out out character for him. Then there is always the option that he had to go move for personal reasons and he didn't want to make his friends that he cared about deeply, its pretty obvious he cared deeply about them, see him sad because he knew that him acting sad would just make his friends even sadder, He would rather the last face they saw of him be a happy/melanchy/ blank one than a sad one. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he a transfer student as well there, if so than he could personally know what it's like to leave friends behind and wanted to see them off with a "smile". The pie in his face could be a was of him tricking himself into thinking he wasn't sad about it even though he was, not to hide his tears, Sakamoto is the type of guy that would pie himself to try and trick himself to not be sad just to try and help those around him not get sad over him being sad, and to try and bring a smile to his face by him being pied in the face. Apologies for the wall of text.
One good point of the show is that you shouldn't try to be like Sakamoto, but to be a better you. The people he meet don't become cooler or his right hand, but they accept who they are and enjoy being them selves rather than trying to be something they expect to be.
I wanna contribute to this by saying, sakamotos closest friend with the mom who had a crush on him, in one of those episodes, sakamoto jumps into the television supposedly and says this is my world, I'm here and this is where I exist, I cannot touch and feel anymore, she cried and asserted that it's not true. In the other episode, when she impersonated her son to come to school, he said they'd be friends forever. The unwonted eloquence as everyone parts for spring break and he himself covers his eyes only so not to show that he was sad too and the amazingly iconic line, sakamoto desu ga. And in another, he narrates ," I'll get to know him bit by bit, but that's where I was wrong", and walks alongside sakamoto. Honestly, this anime was so very amazing and commuvering, the way he nursed the bird cuz it relates to his state, and the episode wherein he gets the fever too, all of these instances and his farewell speech, this anime was so enticing and so obscurely deep yet so light hearted and fun, the way he cares for everyone in the most unique ways, eccentric methods of saving everyone, his actions unnoticed at first and then know his intentions, the way the ghost lingered around him and the way he sat out his friends window smiling. He is remembered by everyone as he left his unique impression and amazing primefacie, such a good feeling. This anime honestly won my heart, so many things we just overlook and yet the anime made us smile and grin so wide. We loved the anime Sakamoto, how impeccable, immaculate , sophisticated , generous, compassionate, selfless and kind he was to everyone, the shiniest soul radiating mirth to everyone , this. Was. Beautiful. 'Haven't you heard? I'm sakamoto'.
Is that theory debunked now, because there are OVA's of Sakamoto being in America? Anyways, i think his statement about the holes in the ceiling of the nurses office is just a way of him saying "I dont regret leaving this school, but I regret about not impoving enough" and the exact number of holes in the ceiling is one of the infinite ways of how even someone like Sakamote can improve, which is then just a reinforcement of the message the series tries to convey, that anyone can improve, no matter how perfect or flawed you are right now.
Well at i wont spoil right away, but the OVA does not conflict with this theory. Now that is exactly what i thought it was at first, but as i said, the logos/debate was not solid, it was rather aiming at the idea of what the writer was going for in his themes. Their really is not enough solid evidence to go either way in my opinion, but i felt the result being that of a Greek travesty has the most impact. One of the points of these videos looking at the themes of a series is not necessarily to get the correct one, but give people more ways to look at it, so that one piece of art can have a larger impact and so we can take things from a bunch of different peoples impressions to combine them into a new, larger train of thought.

I wouldn't say this is either true or not, its basically one of the shows where you the one who will decide the ending, but for me, i think its best to think he lives, like he's just there to be perfectly be cool but foreshadowing helping one around.
He's, quite literally the perfect usage of a Gary Sue. He's perfect and they don't try anything to explain it too much and instead focused on the others affected by his perfectness. If every Mary and Gary stories were written in a way that shows the effects on the sides, it wouldn't have a stigma of being bad. Sadly, people don't realize that and fulfills wishes selfishly.
The Most Fucked Up Part about ball this is.....if he did die....i believe he left a fairly strong image of himself in everyone's head....and sooner or later each of them is gonna try to find Sakamoto and all they will find is a grave stone and the lie they lived ever after sakamoto left..... it will be a billion times more painful than knowing that he was dieing.....
Makes friends with his classmates and random people, but not able to tell his friends that he was dying, and rejected the advances of the female classmates because he didn't want to break their hearts. In the opening song some of the lyrics hint at his death along with the dark sea that has no light, he would jump in and explore to find whatever he can find, the antagonist (I forget his name) compares the dark sea to a grave.

It's not a problem with public speaking i just have a speech impediment and had only read off of a script for one video before (That was not acting but actually normal reading).

The only way I can imagine Sakamoto dying is not in a bed but saving a child and sacrificing his life for that child, who grows up to be just like Sakamoto and Sakamoto passing on his legacy so the world is never without another Sakamoto
That's an interesting theory about Sakamoto dying. Even though I wish that my favorite character, Sakamoto, does not die in this anime, the theory you presented holds water and even I understood a few of the things in the anime now. So basically, this anime is also related to Buddhism, as in, peace when leaving the world, right? If that's so, then I understand fully now. Again, thank you for the theory. It is an interesting one that will make me think more on the meanings for each anime show I watched and their endings.
I saw the theory on Reddit after watching it and I didn’t want to believe it...but wow it makes sense...my only question is why is he so superhuman without showing signs of whatever illness he has...
Sakamoto couldn´t have died because as we saw in episode 13 he was shown flying the shuttle to mars. We know it wasn´t anyone imagining it because of the pattern that the first two imaginations had, they both had reactions at the end and also had similar beginnings with the second one being an obvious imagination. Also, it wouldn´t make sense for his best friend (dont remember his name) to imaginate twice his life in America. As final evidence, we can see that in the wikipedia page of the sakamoto anime in the summary of episode 13 it tells us that it wasn´t an imagination (Quoting: "the students try to imagine what he is up to, ranging from training to be an astronaut to being a student at a martian high school. Meanwhile on America, Sakamoto was enlisted as a shuttle pilot.") Notice the change of sentence separating it from the imaginations. Sorry, but that's really not enough proof for me, unless i have direct translations from an original manga article its hard to actually accept what being said is true. There is also the fact that the ova was filler and not part of the manga, meaning it might have just flown in the face of the rest of the story. And on top of that, i really did not feel the first one was a real scene, but rather just a collective imagination of what everyone really thought that Sakamoto was doing, that is just an interpretation however, and it is possible that the anime staff really where going for Sakamoto really being in america. But even if he was in america, i still think that doesn't disprove the death idea, mostly because he could have left in order to follow his dream before he goes. Like i said at the start of the video, there is no real proof either way, just a lot of hints.
I believe you are right. Sakamoto didn't die. The sadness in his eyes simply means that he must follow his dream no matter what. That's why he never had close friends. It's simply because it doesn't make sense making friends when you KNOW for sure that you are about to leave everything behind, following your dream.
I believe that the reason his so stylish is because he has already come to the conclusion that he will die and his time is limited so his last wish was to probably leave a lasting impression before he left

Watch the movie, it's story is set after the final episode of the anime. They revealed they lacked 1 episode to set the Epilogue so they just included it in the movie. He didn't die he actually achieved his dream of becoming an Astronaut.
I think that sakamoto is a spirit from another world/dimension because he is curious about the emotions of other humans and doesn't understand them so well not to mention when he was told a ghost loved him he wasn't freaked as if it happened regularly or before, he also has abnormally fast reflex's for the characters her, this is also almost hinted in many of the episodes if you pay close attention to what happens in the episodes many say he is almost inhuman the reason he fails to do some of humans activities is because he is unaccustomed to do so, and or wants to blend in and not give himself away, my theory is that he is a spirit from another world or dimension who was curious about humans that be, a demon, yoki, ghost, ect the reason he left was because he had to go back home but this is just my theory 😏😏😛😛😅😅😑😑😊😊i know its dumb but that was my conclusion idk just forget it😊
and maybe he visited the infirmary because he couldn't handle the atmosphere of our planet, so he would return to his own so as not to die (I know it's a very silly theory but I like to think that :b)
I never know that this anime was Sad, I did cry at the end of the episode when I saw Sakamoto.. I thought ep 13 was Canon but it was not.. I'm literally crying right now, I just can't stop my tears.. Damn... Sakamoto is my man.. He knows that his time is almost up so he always make the best of his life.. He's really brave.. And now I understand why he moves, acts and talks like that.. He just wants to hide the fact that he's dying.. And nobody noticed it except for the blonde guy at the end.. He knew that the whole NASA thing was a lie.. *cryy* why sakamoto.. This is a very fun anime but I didn't expect to get the Feels.. T_T
lol it's not that deep it's a comedy anime and i'm pretty sure the author didn't mean to make the people think that sakamoto's dying fans are just wild with their theories hell there's probably even a theory about how sakamoto is actually God in human form if you look for it lul
If we go down that route its probably easier to say that the dummy represents his sickness and the jacket represent Sakamoto's coolness factor, covering it up so no one will know.

While i was watching episode 12 I was crying and laughing about its ending then i saw this. I was very sad about he cant save his own life but to make people happy im thankful to the makers of this anime its very beautiful
Even though the speculation that sakamoto dying is on point, I just can't accept it, because the lighthearted and comedic show takes a sharp turn sakamoto slowly dying
Well he sang a song about father trying to save a dying son from the god of death. He was shown in a coffin and the title of the last episode could be taken to mean a departure from life. Also the scene's that imply he spent a lot of time in the nurses office. Other then that not much, like i said not a lot of proof outside of the fact it was being written strikingly close to how one would write a dying character.
This is all my personal beliefs. I believe that when he said he regretted never counting the holes in the nurses roof he was practically saying that his one regret was not knowing everything. I think this is true as what is it to know how many holes are in the roof? To know that is like knowing how many strands of hair is on ones head, finite but practically impossible. This is why I believe that he was trying to say that he regretted not knowing how things would turn out. He, obviously, didn’t know of his death since birth which means that he once would have lead a different lifestyle. After learning of his impending death he converted to what we see in the show. This is also saying that he wished he had more time, as another interpretation could be that he wished he had the time to figure it all out. I think those words were so symbolic and meaningful, showing that he, although never outwardly showed it, was just like everyone. It is also very likely he was mentioning his death as like some have said, why was he chosen, and how come it was for the development of a project to go to mars? And he had just come to the area at the start of the school semester , entrance exam, after supposedly leaving his previous life to try and preserve total happiness. This may be complete nonsense, but it’s just my theory. Another thing I wanted to say was that I think him loving nature was started/furthered at the knowledge of his death. I mean, bad people are everywhere and many would, at deaths door, see the world from a different viewpoint. He has amazing physical and intellectual prowess which would suggest that in the past and then he wanted to go to space. He also constantly helps others by putting his own needs after which shows that he wishes for his end to be in happiness as many do want. To prove that he was dying his actions are those of one with no regard to there future. I mean he did many things that could certainly prevent his future like hanging out with and helping the “bad kids”. He even rented less reputable videos for them. He did so many things that had no point, but was greatly helpful to many. In scene with the children on the white line he shows the kids that they had a path. I may be interpreting all this wrong but again, my beliefs are mine, and you’re free to believe what you want.

Honestly, Sakamoto is a mix of Bayonetta and Mary Poppins or Nanny Mcphee. He can do everything perfectly like it's magic and does it in a very Bayonetta sexy and cool style mixed with Mary Poppins' magical perfection. And like Nanny Mcphee, when people don't want him but need him, then he must stay. When people want him, but not longer need him, then he has to leave, and that's what I thought the ending was trying to tell us. He left at the end because he helped those who desperately needed his help (specially the bullies who were starting to get into a life of crime), even if they hated him at first. When they started wanting him, he left because they no longer needed him, and so he probably moved on to helping people somewhere else. Granted a lot of people loved him since the beginning (specially the grills), but a lot of them didn't and at the end of the show most of his class and school, including teachers, benefited from him being there with them. This Nanny Mcphee comparison doesn't apply to every single interaction he had in this anime but it did in most of them and it definitely did in his interactions at school.
Apparently the German song he sang in Karaoke had to do with a sick son and his father trying to help him from the God of Death.

I hope I'm not the only one, but I actually, embarrassingly enough, cried the moment I saw Sakamoto's sad face. This entire show got me shook. I built this entire connection with him and all the characters for 11 episodes, and suddenly I'm feeling the same pain his classmates felt URGHH, SO SAD IT HAD TO END! Sakamoto was really cool, and we never got to learn his first name!
I think that's a normal enough reaction, i got little choked up my self and i generally never get to that point.
It really is a sad moment, not just for the characters saying good bye to the good times, but also the viewer saying good bye to the series, and maybe to one of their favorite characters.
We also never needed Sakamoto's last name, since it was in are hearts all along.

Sakamoto is actually dying? Seems pretty legit...
In the manga Sakamoto is seen inside a school locker like a corpse in a casket referencing him dying. If this was the case it would make sense as to why the school would have a freshmen be the speaker for the graduating senior class.
Also, Mars migration project was just a lie to cover up his real reasons for leaving. For starters, Sakamoto himself states that it is currently impossible in perhaps his "lifetime" from Episode 10 while at karaoke. So, why would he get called for such a project if it can't even be done? Not to mention, why would NASA ask Sakamoto of all people and why now? Wouldn't it be smarter to wait until he graduates? (Episode 13 is NOT canon BTW)
And if that wasn't enough, when Hayabusa asks if he had any regrets his answer implies that he has been to the nurse's office a lot of times over. Hayabusa is the only one who realizes the Mars tale was a lie for he even called him out on it and Sakamoto did not even deny it.
This all leads to the fact as to why Sakamoto is so amazing. Through the whole show, he hides the fact he is dying by being cool and fabulous in front of everyone. Always being there for others while always living his life to the fullest. Why do you think he never wanted people knowing about his personal life or past?
And through all that, we see the first sign of emotion from our savior Sakamoto. During the last few minutes of the episode as he looks back at his classmates we see him actually begin to tear up. But our Sakamoto doesn't want them to be sad! So what does he do?!
He covers his upper face with pie so as to prevent anyone from noticing he was crying...

The song Sakamoto sings in episode 10 is called Der Erlkönig. This song was originally a poem by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and tells the tale of a boy and his father riding towards their farm on horseback. As they are riding through the night the boy beings to see supernatural occurrences happening all around him. He calls to his father but he sadly does not see any of the things his son sees and just tries to reassure him nothing is there, just the fog, trees, and the rustling of leaves.
As the father tries to calm his son he screams in agony saying he has been stuck and is in major pain. The father picks up the pace and tries to get home as fast as possible....Finally, after riding through the night they finally made it to their destination, but it was too late. As they arrive the father looks down and sees that his son had passed away in his arms.
Now, if we look at this in literal terms the "supernatural occurrences" could be hallucinations from being extremely ill. Especially for children, it is normal for the extremely ill to see and hear things that are normally not there. The father was probably trying to get his son medical attention ASAP which explains the night journey.
The reason Sakamoto picked this song is because his relationship with the boy from the story! Like him, Sakamoto also has a deadly illness and feels the need to express his sorrow and grief in the only way he can and also because he never expresses it through his actions in public he does it in song...

Nami Sato, author of Sakamoto Desu ga? actually finished the story quite early, she was diagnosed with Lung Cancer at last stage and was working on both this one and her last manga, Migi and Dali. Fearing she will die before completing, she rushed the story of Sakamoto Desu ga and finished it in the way that raised speculations about Sakamoto to complete Migi and Dali.
So, Sato san wanted to portray her death in the way that she went with a bang.

Didnt the "if i made a movie" episode also prove this? The girl who takes pics of Sakamoto explained in her story that a ghost or spirit followed Sakamoto. Could be another example of death following him.
Yet in that same episode it's explained by the girl that takes pictures of sakamoto that the ghost is no longer appearing in the photo's.

Sakomoto once stated that he went to a private school before attending his current one. Could it be that he went to a normal school to get a taste or experience the life of a normal student? This small piece of information can probably explain his background, Is that why he is so talented in every aspect he has come face to?
I mean most the people i know who went to private school actually fell behind when they transferred to a regular school since it was such a culture shock. It is probably a factor to it, but I would assume it would need more then that.
This makes much more sense now that we know the author lost her battle with cancer and passed away. The hint was always there all along...

It turned out to be stomach cancer. YuGiOh author also nearly passed away during the end of YGO manga serialisation. He got hazier and hazier day after day, and he ended up vomiting nearly a cup of blood (Normal people can't stand such blood loss amount). He didn't tell the fans until he planned to rearrange manga chapters 5 years later. He also felt regret about his inability to convey better manga story during the final moment.

That's basically my point, we might and that is a very slim might and I'm talking year and years down the line at the point pretty much everyone is not debating it anyone and it is on no one's minds. I even doubt that though, so basically my point was that I will never believe he is dead because it will never be confirmed and if it ever is it will be so far down the line that I'll probably have almost forgotten that it was ever up for debate whether he dies or lives. I can't think of any off the top of my head but I could have sworn there was a case or two where the creator of a game or anime left the ending ambiguous but like 10-15 years later they came out and confirmed what they wanted it mean and by that point there won't be much fun in debating it anymore,in my opinion. All that is besides the point the mangaka confirming it one way or the other was more of a statement like "I won't do X until Y has happened" without actually meaning it in any way shape or form. In my opinion he did have something wrong with him, it wasn't a deathly illness, it wasn't anything that severe but it was severe enough that he had to leave his friends behind and go else where, like somewhere better suited to treat whatever illness he might have. Heck he might even have some disorder that makes it hard for him to show his emotions and by the end of the show/manga he had slowly gotten better at showing them but that would be so out of character for him that he didn't want his classmates his friends to see him show emotion but like I said it is so out out character for him. Then there is always the option that he had to go move for personal reasons and he didn't want to make his friends that he cared about deeply, its pretty obvious he cared deeply about them, see him sad because he knew that him acting sad would just make his friends even sadder, He would rather the last face they saw of him be a happy/melanchy/ blank one than a sad one. Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't he a transfer student as well there, if so than he could personally know what it's like to leave friends behind and wanted to see them off with a "smile". The pie in his face could be a was of him tricking himself into thinking he wasn't sad about it even though he was, not to hide his tears, Sakamoto is the type of guy that would pie himself to try and trick himself to not be sad just to try and help those around him not get sad over him being sad, and to try and bring a smile to his face by him being pied in the face.

I wanna contribute to this by saying, sakamotos closest friend with the mom who had a crush on him, in one of those episodes, sakamoto jumps into the television supposedly and says this is my world, I'm here and this is where I exist, I cannot touch and feel anymore, she cried and asserted that it's not true. In the other episode, when she impersonated her son to come to school, he said they'd be friends forever. The unwonted eloquence as everyone parts for spring break and he himself covers his eyes only so not to show that he was sad too and the amazingly iconic line, sakamoto desu ga.
And in another, he narrates ," I'll get to know him bit by bit, but that's where I was wrong", and walks alongside sakamoto. Honestly, this anime was so very amazing and commuvering, the way he nursed the bird cuz it relates to his state, and the episode wherein he gets the fever too, all of these instances and his farewell speech, this anime was so enticing and so obscurely deep yet so light hearted and fun, the way he cares for everyone in the most unique ways, eccentric methods of saving everyone, his actions unnoticed at first and then know his intentions, the way the ghost lingered around him and the way he sat out his friends window smiling. He is remembered by everyone as he left his unique impression and amazing primefacie, such a good feeling.
This anime honestly won my heart, so many things we just overlook and yet the anime made us smile and grin so wide. We loved the anime Sakamoto, how impeccable, immaculate , sophisticated , generous, compassionate, selfless and kind he was to everyone, the shiniest soul radiating mirth to everyone , this. Was. Beautiful. 'Haven't you heard? I'm sakamoto'.

Anyways, i think his statement about the holes in the ceiling of the nurses office is just a way of him saying "I dont regret leaving this school, but I regret about not impoving enough" and the exact number of holes in the ceiling is one of the infinite ways of how even someone like Sakamote can improve, which is then just a reinforcement of the message the series tries to convey, that anyone can improve, no matter how perfect or flawed you are right now.
Well at i wont spoil right away, but the OVA does not conflict with this theory.
Now that is exactly what i thought it was at first, but as i said, the logos/debate was not solid, it was rather aiming at the idea of what the writer was going for in his themes. Their really is not enough solid evidence to go either way in my opinion, but i felt the result being that of a Greek travesty has the most impact.
One of the points of these videos looking at the themes of a series is not necessarily to get the correct one, but give people more ways to look at it, so that one piece of art can have a larger impact and so we can take things from a bunch of different peoples impressions to combine them into a new, larger train of thought.

In the opening song some of the lyrics hint at his death along with the dark sea that has no light, he would jump in and explore to find whatever he can find, the antagonist (I forget his name) compares the dark sea to a grave.

Sakamoto couldn´t have died because as we saw in episode 13 he was shown flying the shuttle to mars. We know it wasn´t anyone imagining it because of the pattern that the first two imaginations had, they both had reactions at the end and also had similar beginnings with the second one being an obvious imagination. Also, it wouldn´t make sense for his best friend (dont remember his name) to imaginate twice his life in America. Meanwhile on America, Sakamoto was enlisted as a shuttle pilot.") Notice the change of sentence separating it from the imaginations. Sorry, but that's really not enough proof for me, unless i have direct translations from an original manga article its hard to actually accept what being said is true. There is also the fact that the ova was filler and not part of the manga, meaning it might have just flown in the face of the rest of the story. And on top of that, i really did not feel the first one was a real scene, but rather just a collective imagination of what everyone really thought that Sakamoto was doing, that is just an interpretation however, and it is possible that the anime staff really where going for Sakamoto really being in america. But even if he was in america, i still think that doesn't disprove the death idea, mostly because he could have left in order to follow his dream before he goes. Like i said at the start of the video, there is no real proof either way, just a lot of hints.

I believe you are right. Sakamoto didn't die. The sadness in his eyes simply means that he must follow his dream no matter what. That's why he never had close friends. It's simply because it doesn't make sense making friends when you KNOW for sure that you are about to leave everything behind, following your dream.

I think that sakamoto is a spirit from another world/dimension because he is curious about the emotions of other humans and doesn't understand them so well not to mention when he was told a ghost loved him he wasn't freaked as if it happened regularly or before, he also has abnormally fast reflex's for the characters her, this is also almost hinted in many of the episodes if you pay close attention to what happens in the episodes many say he is almost inhuman the reason he fails to do some of humans activities is because he is unaccustomed to do so, and or wants to blend in and not give himself away, my theory is that he is a spirit from another world or dimension who was curious about humans that be, a demon, yoki, ghost, ect the reason he left was because he had to go back home but this is just my theory 😏😏😛😛😅😅😑😑😊😊i know its dumb but that was my conclusion idk just forget it😊

I never know that this anime was Sad, I did cry at the end of the episode when I saw Sakamoto.. I thought ep 13 was Canon but it was not.. I'm literally crying right now, I just can't stop my tears.. Damn... Sakamoto is my man.. He knows that his time is almost up so he always make the best of his life.. He's really brave.. And now I understand why he moves, acts and talks like that.. He just wants to hide the fact that he's dying.. And nobody noticed it except for the blonde guy at the end.. He knew that the whole NASA thing was a lie.. *cryy* why sakamoto.. This is a very fun anime but I didn't expect to get the Feels.. T_T

Are there scenes that show he's dying?
Well he sang a song about father trying to save a dying son from the god of death. He was shown in a coffin and the title of the last episode could be taken to mean a departure from life. Also the scene's that imply he spent a lot of time in the nurses office. Other then that not much, like i said not a lot of proof outside of the fact it was being written strikingly close to how one would write a dying character.

This is all my personal beliefs. I believe that when he said he regretted never counting the holes in the nurses roof he was practically saying that his one regret was not knowing everything. I think this is true as what is it to know how many holes are in the roof? To know that is like knowing how many strands of hair is on ones head, finite but practically impossible. This is why I believe that he was trying to say that he regretted not knowing how things would turn out. He, obviously, didn’t know of his death since birth which means that he once would have lead a different lifestyle. After learning of his impending death he converted to what we see in the show. This is also saying that he wished he had more time, as another interpretation could be that he wished he had the time to figure it all out. I think those words were so symbolic and meaningful, showing that he, although never outwardly showed it, was just like everyone. It is also very likely he was mentioning his death as like some have said, why was he chosen, and how come it was for the development of a project to go to mars? And he had just come to the area at the start of the school semester , entrance exam, after supposedly leaving his previous life to try and preserve total happiness. This may be complete nonsense, but it’s just my theory.
Another thing I wanted to say was that I think him loving nature was started/furthered at the knowledge of his death. I mean, bad people are everywhere and many would, at deaths door, see the world from a different viewpoint. He has amazing physical and intellectual prowess which would suggest that in the past and then he wanted to go to space. He also constantly helps others by putting his own needs after which shows that he wishes for his end to be in happiness as many do want. To prove that he was dying his actions are those of one with no regard to there future. I mean he did many things that could certainly prevent his future like hanging out with and helping the “bad kids”. He even rented less reputable videos for them. He did so many things that had no point, but was greatly helpful to many. In scene with the children on the white line he shows the kids that they had a path. I may be interpreting all this wrong but again, my beliefs are mine, and you’re free to believe what you want.

no there is something more but i can't say because its complicate his strength is just a with presser like in a swimming pool you can move and pool it for worth and finally to release it something that everyone can do only the believe in it is so little that and who more you training and focused but there is a cost to it and if you find out how to breaking that then your perfection is complete.
