(100K Views!!!!) Usagi Failed a Test (ViZ/DiC Dub) Comparison

- Forget the DiC dub, ViZ is way better. (Though to be fair, the punishment in the DiC dub is not that harsh like the original Japanese version)
Ripped from Sailor Moon episode 1.
Edit: For people who say that Usagi’s name sounds like a “cat vomiting”, you are aware her name is Japanese for rabbit right?
Fun fact: Naoko Takeuchi (creator of Sailor Moon) named Usagi's parents after her own parents names.
No way that's unbelievable 😯
Nice!
@@kingpenguin2252 Not really
Yea usagis family was completely based on Naokas
You know who also did that? Trey Parker and Matt Stone 😁
Viz: "Go outside and wallow in shame 😡"
DiC: "Go to the library and study 👎"
Original Japanese: "You don't deserve to be in this house 💀"
DiC was better at this...less harsh too
@@Blossom44100 tbf I think the sentiment was the same in Viz & DiC. Even though she says to go to the library in DiC, she knows it's closed as Usagu says, so she's basically saying the same as Viz without acknowledging it directly. Though I'm not sure how being told to stay outside until dinner is a punishment in the English dub contexts.
The Japanese is direct and really harsh but at least it makes the most sense as far as what Usagi's mom actually tells her.
@@rikiishitoru8885 I guess
@@Blossom44100 that doesn't make it better smh. It's worst because it's not accurate to the intent at all.
@@rikiishitoru8885 it's just stuff they say. Like when DBZ said pilots that were murdered had parachutes.
It's covering their bases in case some cry baby parent saw it and freaked out.
For a culture raised on saccharine sitcoms at the time. Well it's probably why sitcoms were like that too.
US cartoons had been under heavy scrutiny for violence and then commercialism. For decades at that point.
You probably already but that's why they added those segments to add a lesson. It's an artifact from having to do it.
Apparently some people are nostalgic for that?!
I'm scoffing
I never wanted that in the first place. I'm so so glad we got away from that.
I prefer the DiC and this scene is a prime reason why. I love the energy the DiC dub brought to this scene. It felt real - especially as a North American viewer. Moms can be scary - and she was definitely scarier and more threatening in the DiC dub. Plus, I absolutely love Serena/Usagi screaming that she can't study because its too late in the afternoon and she thinks its bad for her brain. That's such a Serena thing to say and I absolutely love it. It makes me smile and giggle every time. Also, the voice actress here is Tracey Moore, my favorite! I was a kid (6 years old) watching during that original running of the first season in the US in 1995, so I have a strong bias for the original and for Tracey.
YES FINALLY SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS ME
Definitely has big DIC energy in this scene
Actually you didn't notice the facts that they been removed and expired by Japanese company in years ago in 2002 or 03
Only exist here is Viz media dub, because they did make a right thing is to accepted that Usagi Tsukino is Japanese girl but sadly to dic entertainment said they can no longer to redub Sailor moon if they did,Ms.Takeuchi the manga creator of Sailor moon will twice disputed Dic's there's no guarantee that will be Dic dub again after what happened long time ago
@@_RealCharlotteMorningstar_ nope lol
I like the DiC dub better because Mom's reason for throwing her out made more sense. Go back to the library and study works better than you're locked out for punishment.
Another good example was when Serena was freaking out about gaining half a pound. Her parents try to talk her down. Assuring her it's no big deal. While Usagi's parents use her being upset about weight gain to start bringing up all her other faults. Like they just need to remind her at any opportunity just how bad of a daughter she is. The original Japanese version came off more as mental abuse.
Actually they been disputed and expired by Japanese company in 2002 including removed Serena into her original name is Usagi
Actually it shows the VIZ dub icon actually be better in some ways too. They show what's actually happening and dosen't hide mental abuse, which is good. I understand your reasonings though, because it can be difficult and triggering to watch stuff like that for some people. I personally have a struggle watching Usagi's friends bully her, so I love Usagi and Ami's dynamic.
I'm surprised theres people out there who still like the DiC dub, even though it was heavily censored for North American kids and for legal reasons back then. Yes the voice acting isn't as great as comparison too the VIZ dub, which sounds alot more better. I prefer the DiC dub personally, but I understand the re dub
Yeah, I also agree with that. I personally prefer the dic dub version of sailor moon too, but I also understand the viz dub too.
@@magicalcat-girl5272 actually dic dub were removed by Japanese company in 2002
To me it's not even about what's more accurate or not but more so with the voice acting. I feel like there's plenty that ALL adaptations got wrong and even sound wrong in the Japanese version -however, you can't tell me that the DIC version of Usagi/Serena doesn't sound PERFECTLY like her. Everyone seems to hate it but to me it depicts exactly what I would expect of someone that's routinely called or compared to a crybaby. That, "It's bad for my brain!" is so in-character, nothing even comes close. And going beyond that, all the voices for the Sailor Scouts are so unique and iconic as well.
That's because Tracy Moore was superb in her voice acting for that role. Her voice sounded like a 14yo girl, unlike Terri Hawkes (who sounded like a Canadian, trying to impersonate a Valley Girl), Linda Ballantyne (who sounded like a middle-aged chain-smoker impersonating a teenager), or Stephanie Sheh (who sounded like a 2nd-3rd grade child).
@@AaronCMountsI wonder why they didn’t ask Tracey to take over from Terri when CWi took over. It was only logical in my opinion.
DiC was a good adaptation and a lot of stuff makes more sense for western audiences. Yea they sensored stuff in that one but newer dubs want things to match the original Japanese even if people don't talk that way in english or the joke gets lost. I'm thinking of bunhead vs meatball head. Most people might not make the connection bun head is supposed to be funny cuz Japanese people eat a lot of bun shaped food. >.> It's clear that DiC understood the context but adapted it so the intent behind the insult is understood by English speaking children who don't know much about Japanese culture in the 90s.
@@AaronCMounts Terri Hawkes IS Serena / Sailor Moon. Yes, Tracy Moore sounded more youthful, but Terri Hawkes had access to a wider emotive range that perfectly captured Serena from her shrieks of joy to her maturity as Queen Serenity.
@@AaronCMounts IMO Stephanie Sheh is perfectly fine in the role of Usagi. Terri and Linda were both fine voice actors as well. Linda I feel improved when she wasn't trying to imitate Terri's preformance because she tended to focus on Terri's signature wailing. I feel like CWi's dub had some janky voice direction here and there anyway. There were point where the script was weird and the delivery was bad.
Though, admittedly of the 90s dub VAs, Tracey IS my favorite.

Her mom is right about going to the library 📚 to study 📖 and taking a retest 📝
I thought the mom called her sere
I thought for sure the mom in the DiC version was about beat her daughter with the spatula!
Definitely prefer DiC over the ViZ dub; their script was just so much fun to watch and listen to, even if it was translated poor from the Japanese. That, and I grew up with the DiC dub, but looking at it now, it feels like a abridged dub, and I love it even more.
They don't even include the full Viz media scene here because part of its cut out of the DiC dub
Lol it’s the exact same case with the original Beyblade dub
I also definitely prefer the dic dub over the viz dub to be honest. Their script was fun to watch and listen to. I grew up watching the dic dub and i still love the dic dub version of sailor moon. It also had lots of charm too.
The DIC scripts were actually translated very well. They paid much more attention to making the dialogue sound natural while retaining the meaning, rather than just literally translating the words into English.
@@kumada84 yeah, i agree with that too. That's why i actually prefer the dic dub of sailor moon, their script was great and the dialogue sounded more natural.
So i didn't grow up with the DiC dub. I have no attachment to it and actively avoided it in favor of Japanese subs. Everyone seems to not like this voice for Usagi, but I think it's PERFECT! It sounds like a young girl, it's cute and girly, not too annoying when she cries. This should have been the voice for the whole show, in my opinion.
I think its more that voice where she sounds like an old lady that many people dont like.
back in high school only the first 46 episodes had been dubbed by viz, so i watched the show split between viz, then dic, then cloverway, and finally caved in for subbed sailor stars since there was no dub for it. since sailor cosmos is coming out soon i am finally watching crystal and i have to say i miss the dic dub the most, oddly enough. it had the charm of 90s dubs that made it so bad that it was good. and i miss sailor says!
Even though I never watched the DiC/Cloverway dub, the Sailor Says sequences were very clever. Apparently American shows at the time were sensitive, so teaching kids, teenagers, and even adults to not follow or copy the wrongs Usagi/Serena and her friends did was smart!
@@matildalitsey143i think there was some kind of requirement that shows had to teach a lesson to children back then. A lot of kids shows do that or are written to do that.
The DiC is inaccurate, but only if you are looking at it from the lens of the Japanese version. It is inaccurate, but the characters have a lot more personality and sound like characters that talk normally.
"30? You said you studied!"
Not only is Mom pissed that her daughter messed up, but she is disappointed that her daughter would bs her about her studying. It depicts Usagi/Serena as a teenager who is lazy and irresponsible. Which is what she is. Ikuko then wants to solve the issue by sending her away to study some more.
As opposed to:
"Stop bringing home grades like this!"
This doesn't tell us anything beyond what Ikuko is feeling at the moment. Obviously she is upset, but there is none of that depth here. Usagi has bad grades. Ikuko is mad. Thats it.
honestly I kinda like Ikuko saying "I DON"T WANNA HEAR IT" muffled through the door in the Viz dub more somehow XD
This is why we need a new dub from Viz; give us back personality and excitement. Aside from the dramatic moments, it feels like they didn't even try sometimes. The transformation and attack phrases actually sounded like battle cries instead of line readings.
0:33 30? YOU SAID YOU STUDIED! KNOW WHAT YOU NEED TO DO?!
No.
GO BACK TO THE LIBRARY AND STUDY FOR THE VAPOR TEST 😡
Mother no! Please it too late in the afternoon to study! It’s bad for the brain! 😭
I grew up with the dic version.
But i do like the viz version as well. So all in all.... Both to me are equally good. Dic is good because it was introducing a new anime to north American audiences. And the viz for staying more true to the heart of the story
I grew up with the DiC dub.
I like both since the former is a more faithful take, but I'm a sucker for Toronto voice acting, so I prefer the latter. I just wish they made an uncut Toronto dub that is faithful to the original.
While I do prefer the Viz dub, the way ‘Serena’ says “MOTHEEEEEER” is just iconic.
It's a shame Tracey Moore didn't get more time in the Role.
I think she's the Best of The DiC and Cloverway Sailor Moons.
Stephanie Sheh is Peak Sailor Moon for me though (besides Kotono chan....).
I perfer Viz dub. Cause in DiC removed some scenes in each episodes and the villians have an echoey voice
I prefer the Viz dub. Because it's Bigger, Longer, and Uncut. Like South Park.
I prefer the Dic version because it felt more realistic, and as a English speaker it felt more comfortable to listen.
Actually Dic has removed their dubs by Japanese company in 03

The DiC dub sounds like the mom has better rationale and actually knows how to fix the grade problem. That sounds like something Usagi would fear.
The ViZ dub sounds more like the mom is overreacting.
One of the voice actors from English Dub recorded in Los Angeles, USA. is from Vancouver, Canada. Which is funny since Dragon Ball was originally recorded in Vancouver, Canada and released the same year as the originally English Dub of Sailor Moon before being recorded Dallas, USA and Cell's voice actor is from Toronto, Canada and good friends with the other Cell voice from Vancouver. She also voiced Chi-Chi in the Dragon Ball Evolution game. Her name is Erin Fitzgerald. Also, my dad lived in Vancouver, Canada for 10 years from 1980-1990. So, yeah, it's seeming Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon switched up recording studios for both English Dubs recorded in Toronto and Vancouver despite one being censored and the other uncensored.
The DiC and Cloverway Dubs were actually recorded in Toronto.
@@nekusakura6748 I know, but I was saying that when FUNIMATION and Studiopolis took over dubbing the English Dubs for Dragon Ball and Sailor Moon some or one of the voice actors from Toronto that recorded of FUNIMATION's dub for Dragon Ball since the 2000's which is funny since Sailor Moon was recorded in Toronto while in the new English Dub one of the voice actors from Vancouver would voice some characters for Studiopolis for Sailor Moon since Ocean Studios also did Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball: Evolution for both American and Canadian and other English speaking places around the world at least at the time. So, I wasn't saying that Sailor Moon wasn't recorded in the 1990s in Vancouver, but when Studiopolis started dubbing then it had some Vancouver actors/actresses for the uncensored version vs. the censored version that was made back then despite Sailor Moon already being a 1990's anime when English Dub was released three years later for the first episode after the Japanese Dub was released in 1992 while the new English Dub didn't get released until 2014 for the 1990's anime and 2015 for Sailor Moon: Crystal after the Japanese Dub in 2014 as well.

American/Canadian voice acting for anime shows went downhill when weebs started to work in the industry and direct their talents to sound like bad impressions of japanese seiyuu's uwu moe kawaii acting instead of, you know, direct them to sound more american which is the point of voice dubs.
That's why latinos, but specially mexicans get anime dubs so right, they make their talents sound more like what we are used to while retaining the japanese culture elements. Latino dubs make their changes/adaptations from japanese not to hide the differences but to embrace our similarities. When the characters sound hispanic, use hispanics slang and terms it helps to make them appear mor relatable despite the fact they go to Shinto Shrines and takes the ahoes before entering their homes.
American dubs used to be the opposite, they tried so heavily to hide anything that screamed JAPAN so much by changing the names, flipping horizontally car scenes and sometimes outright editing the visuals that it just made the japanese aspects that weren't change to look more noticeable and more out of place. While I get the new approach of not "censoring" japanese culture I feel like sometimes they over correct. Characters sound unnatural and many of the actors just end up sounding alike and sometimes things seem wrong or worse, jokes and concepts get lost.
A good example of the difference between Mexican dubs and American dubs (Old and new) is that if a character is eating Onigiri in a scene where the fact they're eating is important but not the specific food, the mexican translators know that many, if not most people unfamiliar with japanese culture wouldn't know what an onigiri is so they wpuld just say "snack" or "rice ball" whereas the old american dubs would say "Jelly filled donut" which is just odd and confusing since it's clearly not a donut and the new American dubs wpuld say "Onigiri" which alienates anyone who isn't into Japanese culture
That was very well-said, and I totally agree 👍👍👍👍

I felt sorry for the FCC not allowing Sailor Moon to be uncut when it was first aired on television. Whoever made that field day in the first place had a rough upbringing with the strictest parent in their family. @@bradleyforney4520 When everything from Japan was first got localized in English, everything that was too weird or too hard to under had to be censored to fit the child audience. That way, countries who weren't used to Japanese entertainment would take it seriously. The reason why Sailor Moon got censored to death was because the people in charge of the FCC had a rough upbringing and that's why American parents got too supernanny about Japanese entertainment when it was aimed at kids. Remember when Princess Daisy got censored for major Nintendo video game appearances back in the 90s? Many people got deceived by Daisy's heavy resemblance to Peach in her first two video game appearances, so that's why they didn't know she was a different character. Because of this, she suffered an identity crisis for a little while until later in 2000 with Mario Tennis on Nintendo 64. Back in the day, it must have sucked being weird from Japan because you're too hard to be taken seriously just many people weren't used to Japanese entertainment as they are today. Because I couldn't stand the lie of Daisy and Peach being one in the same character, being gay is taboo, too much censorship is a good thing, and bootlegging everything from Japan was for the safety of younger audiences, I'm happy we have the Viz Media dub. We had no one to blame but the FCC for Sailor Moon getting censored to death when it was first aired on television. The FCC had a good idea on what children liked, it's just that they didn't get the full picture on Japanese entertainment back then, that's all... Even so, I'm grateful Sailor Moon got localized in English.

Well too bad dic entertainment was extinct by Japanese company like Toei animation and Naoko Takeuchi the creator manga of sailor moon lol
Jeez that difference in the colors LOL
Yeah, the DIC version has the correct colors. VIZ has color degradation that makes everything too pink because of age.
Never understood what deal was with the BGM in the first episode of the DiC dub…
I think the first two season of the Dic version had an original soundtrack for the west. Once the show moved over to Cartoon Network, they had started using the original Japanese soundtrack instead.
@@dhay03 In 1999, CWI got the rights to dub & distribute S3 & S4. Cartoon Network executives put CWI under a super-tight time crunch that only gave them a few months to dub both seasons (~80 episodes) so CN could begin airing them. So CWI didn't have time to negotiate and license rights to the DiC SM soundtrack from the Don Perry Music Co. Therefore, they were forced to use Japanese sound track.
@@dhay03I think they’re referring to the music in the first DiC episode being different pitches from how it would sound in the rest of the dub.
Wubbzy: IS OVER 30000!! 0:10
*Viz: Brillant and well done!* 👍
*DiC: Cringy and idiotic* 👎
Finally someone who is not a bone head and didn't realize dic and cloverway were horrible dubbers for sailor Moon!
@@parallel_lun900 yeah, at first when I saw the first episode… I thought some random UA-camr took out the original audio (from Viz) and replaced it with his own! when I found out it was actually a thing, I was surprised!
Viz Media hits better while Dic was what it is dicks for changing everything of the original creators. But all seriousness the dic dub is like a funny random fan dub these days. Cool video. ^_^
The English dubbing done by DIC Entertainment is MUCH BETTER and family-friendly than the later English dubbing by Viz Media. DIC Entertainment wisely excised the filthy aspects of the original Japanese anime.
Sailor Moon was never meant to be family friendly the manga was 14+ and kids couldn't get their hands on it
@@parallel_lun900 cope. Hence the makeup branding the show was entrenched with...selling makeup to 15 year olds Or makeup to 9+? Sooo family friendly
Thank God that wiser heads prevailed in the United States.
Usagi 🤝 nobita, even nobita mom in japan dub voiced by usagi herself
Serena's mom: You said you studied! You know what you need to do?
Serena: ... no?
*Seriously*? Well, that explains the bad grade. FFS Serena. 🤣
More like Usagi
I know the VIZ dub is kinda funny but the dubbed English DiC scene made more sense, as locking people out as punishment is pretty cruel.
At least she didn't get whooped with a belt. That would've been cruel.
I prefer Dic dub better :)
Dic were removed by Japanese company in years ago
@@bradleyforney4520hey there, yeah i know that
@@6897kj well I like better but I used to like dic dub once but that was long time ago we like Sailor moon is isn't kids shows no more but I didn't realized her name is Usagi Tsukino and that sounds cool and then we started to waited and waited for years until Viz media had a distributed license in 2014 an order kept her original Japanese names is to accepted and respected Naoko Takeuchi the one who'd created sailor moon in her manga plot
@@bradleyforney4520 ok but this video is a comparison of both these scenes its about the voices, i just preferred dic here in this scene
@@bradleyforney4520I actually like viz better than dic, i just preferred dic here
Firstly, what is the mane of this episode(full episode) Secondly where else can I watch it ( Tubi, Pluto tv, Apple TV, etc)?
