    I bought one a while back. Before I had a chance to take a single photo with it I slipped on some rocks and slammed the display down on the ground with my full weight on top of it. Apart from a small scratch which is barely noticeable the camera is still in perfect condition, so it is definitely extremely tough.
    I personally am not that impressed by the autofocus though, and my earlier Toughs all seem to have performed better in that regard.

    I am an actual purchaser and user of the TG-5/6. When I was snorkeling in the Philippines, the camera flooded, costing me some beautiful shots. I recovered a few from a data recovery service, and because I had a warranty from Amazon I ordered another camera (receiving a full refund for the first camera from Asurion). A year or so later, in 2024, the SECOND TG 5/6 camera FAILED as well, when I was snorkeling in the Caribbean. This time there was a slow leak and I was able to dry off the data card and avoid the cost of data recovery, but the second camera as well was ruined. On both occasions I most assuredly toggled both switches in the battery/data card compartment to make sure the camera was sealed. Yes, the camera takes great pics and I'm sure you can drop it with no problems, but no, I would not stick the camera in the water by itself, as shown in this video review. The problem isn't that the camera floods all the time, but that it MAY flood and when it does, you've lost your camera for your trip, photos, and the cost of buying the camera. Again, I don't recommend using ANY "underwater camera" without an external cover.

    I am tempted by the macro mode of this camera but how is the camera compared to mobile phones ?
    Especially day time photo shoot.

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  11 місяців тому +2

      Substantially better than my Iphone 14 for example, and part of that is because the sensor size of the camera is much larger than the phone sensor, allowing for more detail and color accuracy. Modern phones really go for high dynamic range as a staple too make their image "pop", but doesn't really mean it's realistic or natural looking. I've found the macro mode to do quite well in this camera, and as you mentioned a day time photo shoot, that's even better.

    Maybe I was doing something wrong but I found the image quality to be horrendous, I wanted to use it as a travel camera and hikes but sadly I had to return as the image quality I believe was worse than my 3 year old mobile phone. Having many features is great but if the image quality is not there then all those features mean nothing

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  10 місяців тому +3

      Bummer, sorry to hear that- I think that as a standalone camera VS specialized non waterproof models, it's a tough matchup, but if you're traveling alot and want a rugged camera with good underwater performance, I still think it's a solid choice.

  • @iceangel587
    @iceangel587 Місяць тому

    In my experience, however, with a series of unintentional drops, the waterproof capability does start to get compromised and you may no longer be able to use it in that fashion so just an FYI, this is based off of an older model of the Olympus waterproof camera

    Hey! I have an iPhone 14 Pro, and was wondering how this compares?
    I like going on hikes a lot, and go fishing often, and want something that’s more durable and less detrimental than my iPhone. That being said, if it shoots pictures at the same/worse quality, I’m not sure it makes sense for me.
    Thank you’

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  4 місяці тому

      I think if you take shot for shot and compare iphone 14 pro vs tg-7, the pic quality with dynamic range jacked up on the iphone, the iphone pic will probably "look" better. If you're looking for something more durable and waterproof, while still offering quality pics and video capability, then I think this could be a good choice! I've enjoyed using the TG-7 for around 6 months now, and it's been fun to shoot with.

    Do you know why it went from 16mp to 12 from older models, I had the tg3 thinking to get this one since mine crashed.

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  Рік тому +2

      From what I understand, Olympus switched from 16MP on the TG-4 to 12MP on the TG-5 and forward as their 12MP sensor has better low light performance, which is important in lower light underwater shooting. I think they could have probably R n D’d a solution to not sacrifice resolution, but they decided not too. TG-5 and forward have 4k capability and that might have had something to do with it as well.

      @@pricklypearcamera thank you, makes sense, I love the tg3 but I saw a deal on the tg7, due to charger switch to USB c, and better image, 4k video, and better fog issues, tg can get foggy when spending too much time underwater, I might switch to tg7.

    What about the Pentax WG7?

    • @pricklypearcamera
      @pricklypearcamera  8 місяців тому +2

      I have used the WG-6 and wg-7, very very well built camera. I've been using Pentax waterproof since their original WG-1. The WG-7 is 20MP vs the TG-7's 12mp, and is a more compact form factor. I do still prefer the menu and interface of the OM TG-7. The macro capabilities of the TG-7 are also better than the WG-7, but waterproof capability is very similar, and both take nice underwater photos.

    Just to be clear, I would be shocked if this camera actually shot the scenes with the turtle, so I would request that the vlogger clarify this. 2. it is NOT easy going underwater with a camera and trying to shoot fish===your goggles constantly fog up and it's hard to even frame the fish because there is no view finder---I'm constantly guessing where the fish is because I can only sight it with the back screen. 3. The camera does NOT give a clear indication of the shot having been taken in the water. Again, to be honest, if you really want great underwater shots pay your scuba pro/guide to use his/her pro camera, or rent one. The external cover listed here IS expensive, equivalent to the cost of a used TG camera, per the info from this video. Thanks to the reviewer, appreciate your time with this camera.
