- Took my .36 flinter out to shoot squirrels and had a rough time first day , broke a ramrod but we got a couple squirrels on the second day. its a kit i built from Tenessee Valley Manufactering. it is a poor boy kit.

Listen here bubba I’m just glad there’s someone out there like me still poking around these woods, I thought I was damn near an idiot for going out of my way to do things old style, anyway you got a fella from south Ga tuning in! Just a keep on doing what ya been doing!
Man thank you for joining the family here. We gonna have a lot of fun doing things the old way for a while
I'm in north SC same here love the outdoors and good old ways .
We can still be idiots and do things the old way! I know at least I can. Love the woods with flintlock in hand. Makes me forget for just a little bit how messed up this country has become.
Packing a camera and filming, while hunting. Give that man a cookie. I applaud you. I really enjoyed the hunt. Thanks for the extra time and effort to find and share.
Thank you for watching. The camera does add a challenge but it is a lot of fun too
I saw a guy laying on his back and resting his forearm hand elbow on his knee for a steadier aim when squirrel hunting. Congratulations on the successful hunt. There are all kinds of things that are dying arts. I have darned my wool socks, practiced different fire making, hanging axe heads on new handle, etc. good video. Thanks for sharing.
Yes we have lost a lot of real abilities and knowing how and making it happen is two different things too. Making primitive fire is more difficult than one would expext
I absolutely love squirrel hunting with a flintlock. I use my .50 Hawken with a light load of 40FF and it’s very accurate at the 20/25 yards I shoot them and doesn’t destroy meat much more than a .22 hp. It gives me good practice for when I use it for deer and elk. I’ve come to realize if I wait until a shot opportunity comes that I can brace the gun on the side of a tree my accuracy goes to about 95% from the 30% if I’m shooting free hand. As for it not igniting when oiled I carry alcohol wipes, the little single packets used for glasses cleaning, and I wipe down frizen, stone, pan, and remove touchhole to wipe as well before I load it the first time. Then I have good ignition and no hang fire on first shot which is most important. Really been enjoying the channel Justin great job! I’d love one of those kit .32/36 long rifles some day!
Thanks for sharing your experience! I've got a 45 flintlock kentucky and I'll try the lighter loads for squirrel, as well as your other tips, when the deer hunters leave the woods here in Georgia at the end of January.
What a great way to spend a day in the woods. Nothing beats carrying a flintlock in hand.
I agree with you on that
Your right about us being/or not being able to make it like the real old timers did, we would fail terribly I think😂
God bless
I too hunt squirrels with a .36 flinter. Hunting them that way is hard enough, let alone self filming it. Congratulations on a job well done. Sometimes I use a .62 smoothbore flinter I built for turkey hunting when I take my Mt. Feist squirrel dog out. She does not like it when I miss with the .36, which is often. When I am out without her, or when someone else with a cartrige gun is hunting with the dog me I use the .36.
It is a challenge . My rifle is accurate so i just need to practice more i guess
I knew you were going to connect on that second shot because your hold was steady until well after the shot was away. Good follow-through.
Sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you..I smiled when I saw how you placed your feet when you were stalking..the same way I was taught..toes down first. Great video. It is hard to hunt and film at the same time. Thanks for sharing the hunt with us.
Im gonna do a video on that . I see all these guy making fox walk videos and they plop that heel down and then try to roll their foot. That aint how the native Americans used to do it
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors I had a hard time getting my youngest son to do it. He sounded like a herd of buffalo coming thru the woods.
@@UncleSasquatchOutdoors my daddy would say stop dragging your feet lol
It's amazing how they can hide amongst the tree especially a pine tree . Always wanted a good flintlock rifle. Had a replica but the lock was made out of fairly soft metal and quite sparking and was wearing pretty fast. Appreciate you sharing. ! 👍🇺🇲👍🙏🙏 I like your channel content.
You may can harden the frizzen on that rifle
What replica do you have?
Shared. This is my favorite video. I posted it in the community post of the 11 bangbang channel
After getting my first flintlock rifle a few years ago I have developed a great respect for anyone who can accurately shoot one. But the fun of it makes it worthwhile. Great video.
Thank you, i shot good on a bench but hitting squirrels is a horse of a different color
Same principles of sight alignment, trigger and breath control. The pan flash is very easily gotten used to.
Good hunt ,when ya don't get skunked. I love stalking them bushy tails up here in Michigan. We love to skillet fry em like my granny did when I was a youngin. Practice will make all the difference. My wife's grampaw, could cut a playing card a 25/30 yards , he was a mountain man enthusiasts going to the Michigan rendezvous in the UP. We miss him but he shared a wealth of knowledge. One thing I'm getting interested in is making homemade powder. We are gonna need it , it's getting harder to get supplied . Enjoy that bushy tail. God bless ya all.
Ive been working on powder but its tricky to get a good fast burning batch. I think my char wasnt up to par in the last batch but it did shoot.
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors , I've heard grape vine works good to make your char , willow is best , then your pines , ceader. I'm gonna give it a try just need a good rock tumbler with rubber tub.
@@dort7402 i used marbles in a glass jar . Had a motor so i just built a tumbler
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors round lead 50 cal balls work well to about 10or12 is what grampaw scratched down. I seen a recipe online they used same. Jar should work to just as long as there's not any sort of ignition hazards. He left me his ol Kentucky blk powder rifle cap style , was gonna see if they have a conversion for flint n pan if not I may get a kit rifle.
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors did you get your rifle kit from Dixie or other.
Looks to me like you're not doing bad, justin. Looks like a lot of fun doing it with a flintlock. Love that old gun.
Its is fun. Killing a squirrel with that thing is a lot more exiting than the 22 or 12 guage but if im gonna feed the family ill have to tote my scatter gun
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors you get my pictures?
@@larryreese6146 i hadnt looked till now but i got them. Ill open em and look at em here in a sec. I got clay all over my hands lol
@@larryreese6146 man yea thats a beautiful place there. I see you did find rock heaven. Is that you in front of that stack of rock
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors gotta make a livin'.
I'm 10 months late to this video - but I sure enjoyed it. And as a lefty I can say shooting a flintlock left handed can be... flashy!
Your just in time for the upcoming season. We gonna dive headlong into some black powder soon
Love flintlocks, I'm working on a jim kibler colonial in 58 cal.🤠
Nice , it will be a fine rifle
Great Video!
Thank you
I have two squirrels around the house in the trees, they have defined all my attempts to make them go away. I'm sure they can outrun a mini ball from a flint or cap and ball. I believe my only option now is a low yield 5 ton nuke!
Youve never herd of victors rat traps and peanut butter
I can’t wait till our season opens up here in New Jersey to go squirrel hunting
When does yours open
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors it is open now , I meant to say I can’t wait for cooler weather to hunt them I like to hunt them in November ,,, I also goose hunt that opens November 24 -26 then it reopens again December 10 til January
@@MsRemmington we finally got our cool weather this weekend
Glad to see you do this video I love to muzzle load hunt but I just have percussion rifles and want a flint lock .I know the pain of how everything must be right to use a rifle like that much less trying to film it and explain what your doing and making a successful hunt .my hat is off to you ! You have to love muzzle loading to do it it is not a lazy mans game even down to cleaning and maintaining a flintlock or percussion. You just can't shoot it and put it up in corner and let it sit till next season unless your going to use it for a boat oar !!! I know what it's like to break a ram rod too had one to splinter off and jam the sharp end into my palm .I know bring an empty 20 guage hull a place it over the end when I get my close to seating the last bit it is much easier on the palm .i now use those long none breakable ram rods and take a rubber dish glove to rap around the ram rod for grip it works great ! Hope this helps a little ! Hope to see more videos on muzzle loading and just maybe a cane pole fishing show i love to fish with those too people just forget what it used to be like but sometimes simple is just plain fun ! Good luck God bless and keep that young man on the waters and woods !
Yes im gearing up to get started on my fall hunting preparations
You need to try a flintlock smooth bore , a fowler or musket . I used to squirrel hunt with a 1777 charleville musket 69 caliber . Since it was smooth bore I used shot in it instead of a round ball . Had loads of fun with it and got plenty of squirrels.
I want to build a .54 smooth bore
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors you will love squirrel hunting with a smooth bore , and rabbit hunting with it also .
Great job. Bake up some biscuits and get the skillet ready.
You will see that squirrel cooked on the river bank later this week
Great job.
Thank you
Time to get the ol squirrel cooker out
That’s exactly what he went on. Took him camping with me
Felt like I was right there with ya.
Thanks for watching
Been patterning my smoothbore for turkey season, the shooting got me to thinking I want a small rifle too for the small critters. Less lead and powder means more shootin.
More shooting is always good
Nice video! I plan on going squirrel hunting the next two days with my Lyman GPR. It’s a 54 caliber, but I use a light charge and it just pokes a hole through them.
Why didn’t you get a left hand rifle? It would fit you a lot better.
I built this rifle with handing it down to my son in mind.
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors
Nice! You ought to build one for yourself so you can hunt them squirrels together.
@@jeff507 i plan to but im gonna build a 54 smooth bore next I think
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors
That would make a nice 28 gage that you could shoot round balls out of.
@@jeff507 yes that is precisely my reason for it.
Tuning in from Asheville NC
Welcome to the family
I love squirrel hunting with a flintlock smoothbore or rifle
Are Tree Rats Tasty? The Big one! is the Sierra's should be yummy with all the Pine nuts they eat!
They are very good. Lean dark meat.
Would like to see more flintlock shooting.
I suggest that you order a left handed rifle next time.
It will fit you better. The buttstock will be cast off for a left shoulder shooter and the check piece will be in the right place for you.
Once you get a left handed rifle you won't go back to the other kind
Unless you just have to for some reason.
Thanks for your videos

Im not building a left handed gun just to ease peoples mind. Im not scared of it and i can shoot this one fine.
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors Oh come on son, treat yourself right. You know you deserve another gun!
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors Seriously, i didnt know there was such a thing as a gun made for left handed people until I was 35.
Then when I got my first one and I saw how much it improved my shooting to have a rifle that fit me right
I never looked back. I have 7 or 8 now.
I had a couple custom made. That's the expensive route. I had more dollars than sense at the time.
I've bought most of them at gun shows and swap-meets for reasonable prices.
I figure if I can buy one ready made for the cost of the parts, it's a no-brainer
But really I have been blessed in my life and I hope you will be too.
Thanks for doing the videos.

So I have been watching your videos and laughing my ass off very good just noticed on the squirrel hunt your Lefthanded and I am to was wondering how the right handed flintlock treated you I just bought a Lefthanded Hawkins kit .for deer but wanted a .32 cal for squirrel but all I seee are right handed
I have no problem with it other than ignorant comments on my videos because it bothers everyone else. I built it right handed so i could give it to my son one day
I’m with you there my friend I surely was not meaning to offend you ! I really enjoyed your content and feel we both have a lot in common and same beliefs
I had my 32 cal cap lock out today and didn't see not one squirrel!
They have acted funny this year
I would love to own a flintlock but black powder is impossible to get here! I have never seen any in my life… So percussion hawked for me.
Well, at least you’re shooting with the proper hand
Finally one on my side lol
When a Georgia Boy misses three squirrels in a row, I heard somewhere, that your supposed to call the State Capitol so they can fly the state flag at half staff. It's just proper protocol.🙂
It orta be a law across the nation 😂
You a left handed shooter?
That looks like a Kentucky long rifle. I'm hunting groundhogs and I put a whitetail but squirrel is too quick and too small least and my neck of the woods
Its a poor boy kit I built from Tennessee valley manufacturing
You got that 36 crakin fast! Also theres a guy that make's unbrakable ram rods with a steel core that I am going to look into gettin. Shoot some paper target and get the load worked up with what thightness patch to get the best group at 30yrd and then work out to 50. My 32 will group 5 shot at 50 in a 2 inch spot but need to aim 1/2 left. It takes time and allot of shooting.
You will get it dialed in. Working up tje load is half the fun
You did well. Why don't you take a rest against a tree when taking a shot?
Huuuyyyyyyyyiiii q bien
Thumbs Up
Thank you
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors I'm a little short winded today but it was an awesome video Justin
@@DuaneT64 youll think of something later and can add it. I had one feller tell me i should retitle the bank line video talking about everything but bank line 😂
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors LOL
@@DuaneT64 he didn’t appreciate my profound expression of wisdom through a unique lyrical deprivation of speech
Keep a piece of charcoal to wipe your frizzen to dry off the oil
I doubt ill put the oily rag back on that part but thanks for the tip i sure didnt know that one either. I got a string and patches tied on it in my bag now too works like a charm. Im gonna throw all these tip in a video pretty soon and give you a big thanks on it
I have a 32 Hawkins that i use but it's cap i never really care for the flint
That flint is a trick but with caps hard to get its right handy
i know i had told you in your other flintlock video i use dawn dish soap and water as a lube, and i do, but for range shooting. for hunting i use beeswax and olive oil i mix. or a spit patch, one thing that may help you with accuracy if you are flinching, is when you start pressing the trigger, put it in your mind that you will not move till you count to 5, of course the gun will go off before you get past one. it is 85% mental,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Im not real sure where i went wrong on missing squirrels because ive shot good on the bench. I think its more the pressure of the camera watching
@@SpiritoftheOutdoors do more offhand shooting, that will tell the tale. i have a range at home, a friend comes over and we shoot and eat and have a good time, he is coming over tomorrow. we are both retired and do a lot of shooting. he is a good man and needs the Lord, you pray for him, his name is Patrick,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Id rather miss six squirrels than be at work anyday
Amen on that, That right there will preach my friend
new subscriber but found your problem ,your shooting on the wrong side silly!/Ed
They make left handed guns
I identify as right handed tho. 😂They didnt make this one i made it
Nice rifle I have been watching you for same time now I like how you use that rifle
Thank you . Everyone seems to be mad at me for shooting it off hand.
