    Excellent warning on "once you have it, it's there". I would add that sugar cane is also a lot harder to cut and handle than you mention. It has itchy fibers, I would never handle it without gloves, and those grass edges can cut! It's quite substantial and tough to manage.

    Thanks for all your knowledge and experience! I’m farming in hawaii and doing syntropical style as well, and you’re giving me tons of inspiration!

    We have enough trouble with setaria on our place. It grows quickly in summer, is clumpy and is a general pain. Sugar cane looks like setaria on steroids. Cut setaria grass gives plenty of biomass. Walking on cut grass is like walking on a spongey carpet.

    I’ve also just started inter planting it on my tree rows yesterday. Super inspiring how you are doing your rows. We are doing things similar

    Thanks for all the great information on your video's, love them. Just wondering where you bought your sugar-cane from to start growing it. I have tried to buy some cane and they won't send to Qld for quarantine reasons. If possible could you send me some information where to buy it from in Qld. Thanks

      Hi Peter i recall I got it off a fellow grower and just propagated it myself till I had heaps. Drive past a sugar cane farm and pinch a stem.

    Why wouldn’t you process the sugar cane, extract the syrup and either add it to cattle feed or make rum with it or pure alcohol?

      You can. I don't
      ; have cattle and I only drink beer. But yes you could do that

    Howzit
    I have been planning a similar block with cane as an interrow but i want to see if i can get a harvest of cane. I figured i could grow out about 20 - 30t/ha by adding 3 rows in my interrow. Have you worked with pigeon peas?

      Hey. Sounds good. Can I ask what you harvest the cane for? Biomass or sugar? Just remember the roots clumps are pretty much permanent. I’ve had mixed results with pidgeon pea. A little disappointing

    Does the sugar cane root system die out eventually. Does it reshoot from the roots.

      Reshoots. Can’t kill it. You get one cut a year

    Congratulations dude, dont you thinks there are better options than sugar cane? some giants grasses? some other canes? vetiver? have you tried those?

    • @farmerjones2766
      @farmerjones2766  Рік тому +1

      Yes I have. But here in Australia we cannot get the giant grasses we want. The seed is difficult to get. Commercial seed companies stopped importing.
      I want Napier and Guinea but can’t find seed anywhere. The vetiva did not do well here on my place.

      Hey Farmer Jones - Guinea grass is a weedy grass that shows up in our waterways here in Brisbane. Why dont you collect the seed from the sites where you see it growing? Pretty sure it's seeding right now down here. I plan to do this once I settle into my new property. Will head down with my cordless hedge trimmer and collect a million seeds in 10 minutes 😂
