Thank you so much 🩷 This video has helped me make an apron for my sister! I also really appreciate that you don’t have loud music playing when you speak. Thank you!
I really appreciate this tutorial, Jan. I am making Christmas Baking Day aprons for daughter and granddaughters and this video has made it so easy (I’m making four at the same time!). Thank you!
Thank you for the tutorial! I made a darling apron to go with my Oktoberfest outfit this year, but am excited to use it when hosting as well! I am new to sewing and found your tutorial easy and fun to follow!
This video was GREATLY appreciated!! We have Wurst fest coming up and I couldn’t find an apron I liked. All the tutorials I could find were so complicated, I nearly threw in the towel. I found this video and (5 hrs later… operator error) now have a beautiful apron to wear with my Dirndl! Thank you again! 🖤
i needed a simple gathered half apron, but the ones at the store were too expensive, so i opted to make my own, but i had never sew a stich in my life. but i tried anyways and i was shocked with how well it turned out! it was incredibly easy to follow the instuctions and it was just so great.
Thank you for this tutorial. My Mom used to make this style of apron . She made fancy ones out of beautiful fabrics and sometimes put lace overlays. Women used to wear the fancy ones when entertaining at Christmas in my hometown.
Thanks for the great tutorial! I had to make 12 aprons this week for a dance performance and was able to whip them out over a couple days. Super easy directions and I love the way you make the band - works really well.
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I will give it a go over the weekend. I was looking all over the Internet for an easy-to-understand and follow half Apron tutorial.
LOVE the way you turned out the waist tie! Wonderful tutorial. I'm new to sewing, though I think I can handle this due to your concise verbal directions and visuals. Thank you!!
My daughter in law wants me to teach her how to sew an apron and I'm a new sewer myself. I had no idea how to do pleats so thank you for this tutorial.
This is the exact video I need. I have 1 yard of a really cute fabric and this apron is exactly what I was looking for. The instructions are clear enough for even me to follow. Thank you so much for doing this tutorial! 😁
This waistband trick made me sew so much faster I have started using it on dog clothes too I can make amazing dresses for my baby in no time she’s quiet extravagant she loves alot of puff and tulle and sparkles before putting a tiny waist band on made it so hard because it’s little already but now I use this trick on anything that I am making that’s using ties
I am teaching myself to sew in my mid 50's. I avoided Home Ec. in school and focused on music. Anyway, you are one of my two go to's for sewing videos. I love your straightforward tutorials. They are easy to follow and you explain the why...I will be attempting to sew one of these aprons in the next few weeks.
Thanks, Jan! I watched this video the day you posted it and whipped up an apron that evening. Easy and enjoyable. I always learn new ways of doing things from you. 🙌🏼

In a 7th grade art class ages ago, we turned this farmhouse kitchen-style into couture-class, layered tulle cocktail and dinner party aprons. It was very easily done with several yards of designer tulle remnants gathered into beautiful bouffant aprons. The densely gathered tulle aprons were invisibly machine-sewn into foldover bowtie sashes made from wide grosgrain ribbon in complementary colors. Some of us made elaborate beaded and sequinned felt appliques for the tulle skirts. Beautiful unadorned gift aprons were quickly made from ombre layers of matte or iridescent tulle. Recipients loved them. They looked very expensive and were always admired worn over silk and velvet hostess skirts.
This is almost identical to the apron I learned to sew in 7th grade home ec class! The memories… It’s a shame that neither of my children were taught any of this in school. The high school I taught in for 30+ years removed its machines years ago
BEE-utiful Jan!! Great tutorial, very thorough! I'm sharing this with my friends in a upcoming FB Group Challenge. Hopefully you will get more subbies.Happy Spring my Sweet Friend.. Positive Blessings, vibes peace, health and happiness! Namesta ✌️🐞🕉️
Thank you, so easy to understand and follow. I need help to make a dog training bag with an insert with a draw string on the lining oh also a zipper in the front of bag. Can you help. Blessings Anna Nickel
Sounds like a great idea. I don't have any patterns or tutorials for that type of thing. If you crochet, I do have a chalk bag that a lot of folks make for training bags for their dogs. Here is the link if you are interested. youmakeitsimple.com/product/rock-climbing-chalk-bag-crochet-pattern/
Ready to sew mine. Are the ties the same length and width for the children's size? I adjusted the apron fabric, per your measurements, but what about the ties?
Absolutely amazing tutorial! I’ve already made one, and I really love it! Would it be possible to make this without the gathering? Could I just cut the fabric to the 20 inches? I love the gathering but I’m working on a Halloween costume and need to make an apron very similar to this, just without the gathering. ❤
@@JanHowell thank you so much! And don’t worry about the late reply, I totally understand! I ended up trying it and it worked out perfectly! Your tutorials have helped me so much with learning to sew!
@@JanHowell Sorry, I wasn't clear in my question. AFTER you even out all the ruffles, what size is the cild's apron before attaching the strings? Thank you!
My sister wants an apron. I want to surprise her with one. Is is large maybe 3x. What lenght should i chg the 20" gather to? And how much extra to add to straps. Ty
I would add maybe 10-20 inches to fabric and gather to 25-30. If the gathers go past the side waste, that's not that big of a deal. Better too wide than not. Hope that was helpful. Sorry for the slow reply.
I’m new to sewing but I’ve got a question, when you’re making the 2 rows at a 5 length stitch… to start she pulls the thread to make a long tail… I have to do that anyway everytime that I start a row or my needle unthreads itself… am I doing something wrong?
Cute apron! Only one question? Does a half apron suffice for anything but a serving, hostess apron? I would definitely get spills and spatters on my clothing above the half apron’s coverage. Therefor, I always sew full coverage apron styles!
Half aprons are good for wiping hands while cooking, serving and hosting. But I do agree, I prefer a full apron as I tend to splatter things all down the front of me while cooking. I do love the looks of a half apron at times. I have a tutorial for a reversible full apron if you're interested. ua-cam.com/video/6_uX1nQHTFE/v-deo.html
This is so cute! I'm a beginner sewer. Do you know if this could be used as a garden harvest apron, or would something need adjusting for more heavy duty use? Thanks for the great videos!
Yes you can! But I have another tutorial and video showing how to make a utility apron. If you make the utility apron, you could make fewer and wider pockets and also make them deep for harvesting. Here is the link ua-cam.com/video/TILa22iriD4/v-deo.html
You could cut off the top portion and add a waistband and ties. You would gather to the measurements to fit the width of the pattern. It probably won't have a lot of gathers.
How can I use an old shirt I dont wanna get rid of to this apron? Like its an old concert shirt. How can I get that on top of this fabric you are using? I am a beginner so I do not know correct terminology
Hi, if you cut off the sleeves and the back of shirt leaving the collar intact to still pull over your head. You can use the remaining back for the apron and waist ties. Use 1/4 in seam allowance to clean up edges. You'll need ballpoint needle for easier sewing.

Enjoyed your tutorial and your teaching method! Question: Is there a way to calculate how wide to cut the apron if making for a larger person?
Depends on how much wider you want it. I would go like 4 inches and add 2 inches wider for the gathering amount. You can also add length to the ties.
So much easier than the pattern explanation
A video is always helpful.
Clever with the tape!

Did you run two rows of basting to do the gathering.
Yes, sometimes I'll even do three rows if it is a long piece of fabric.

This machine is a Babylock Verve
What is the waist band measurement for child?
36" x 5" However, you can make it as long or short as you'd like.

It's a Waverly fabric from Joann's. Not sure of the name.
It's a great video but I don't understand the measurements. Is the width of the fabric 44" ? What is the length?
Yes, correct. It's 45 inches. the length is 20 inches.

Hello Ma'am
First time I saw your video, I liked your teaching, I am from India.
Somewhere I confused as you didn't show text.
Somewhere difficult to understand ascent.
How much length you taken for this half appron.
I noticed your text where you mentioned 40 × 20" .
So that means you taken:
Length 20" and
Gathere 40"
Is it my understanding correct or not.
When I see more and more your videos I will understand properly.
Thank you.
Sorry about that. Yes, gather till it measure 20 inch.
Thanks for your feedback
I like the idea, but how can you put your hands in the pocket??? The separations are so narrow 🤔
You can always make them bigger.
If it's got to be 44 inch that's more than a yard a yard is 36 inches so I'd need more than a yard to make a apron plus more cloth for the band and ties
44 inches wide which is selvage to selvage and the yard is along the selvage. I hope that makes sense.
Hi, hello I'm Watching, mama Sofia
wonderful
🥰
I don’t have an adjustable sewing machine needle. Is the first line of gathering stitches sewn 1/8” from the top edge of the apron, and is the second line of gathering stitches sewn 3/8” from the top edge of the apron (1/4” from the first line of gathering stitches)?
Yes, but it doesn't have to be exact. You'll be pulling those stitches out anyway. You just don't want them to criss-cross over each other.
@ Thanks for getting back to me. I actually already made 4 Christmas baking aprons and gave them as gifts to my friends, and they loved them!🥰
