    Hello everyone! Thankyou for looking at my video 😊. Please note, I am not monetised on UA-cam! So all these adds (I’m shocked by how many) are placed on here by UA-cam itself. Again I’m so sorry about them and wish there was someway I could limit them. Seriously UA-cam you don’t need to run so many!

    This is a brilliant demonstration of saturation! I’ve never seen anyone add ‘pressure’ using scales like this, it works so well!

      Thankyou! I think I could have started these tests using the scale on the gradient and blending test as well but I’m not trying to keep them consistent so I’m just going with it ☺️

    Haha what timing! I am literally waiting for my set of Holbein pencils to arrive in the mail TODAY!😹
    BTW I LOVED the previous Polychromos review, looking forward to all the reviews in this series (and other videos especially art pieces)! 😺

      Wonderful! I've looked at quite a few pencils over tha last few months (takes ages to make these so ive given myself a bit of a backlog). They really are some of the most beautiful and pleasurable pencils I had the pleasure to use.
      Your going to Love them! Did you get the Coloured or the Pastels?💜

      @@StuffBySunshine I got the full set as an “upgrade” to the 12-color tin. So I was already familiar with the pencils. 😺
      It’s weird, these are Japanese, so in my mind I associate them with anime and manga. I guess that works because they seem really good at covering the tooth of the paper, and they do it fast!
      Your scale test I think was particularly interesting for those, as I find they really like some pressure! Once you got to 100g and above, they really started to shine.
      So I really love the pencils, they are a “vibe” for sure! They are incredible for what they do well (thick coverage, blending, vibrant color range) but perhaps they are not the ones for people who want a pencil that does everything well. 😺

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine  Рік тому +1

      Oh that would be the ultimate pencil, one that does everything!
      I did a piece on stream the other day with these and the blending was even better than it showed in the tests. I think with a kit like this while it’s not perfect, if you did buy it you’ll find plenty of ways to use it!

      @@StuffBySunshine yeah exactly… it’s definitely easy to get these pencils to work even if they’re not necessarily the best “all-rounder”.
      Fun fact… I did a couple of pieces with the 150 set already and I found myself reaching for the fugitive colors! There’s a couple of purples that are very, very vibrant - Amethyst and Iris, both rated single star (for fugitive). But oh boy they stand out! So intense!! 🙀

    If you do ever try/test out the Holbein Pastels, I'd highly recommend getting the Soft White pencil as well. It's not part of the set, it's a separate pencil, but it is a very unique white - and yes, make sure it is the _Soft White_ as there are two whites from Holbein

    • @StuffBySunshine

      I’ve heard that! Strange it doesn’t come with a set though. When I do the pastels I’ll make sure I add it ☺️

    Ooooh they have a white undercoat, a hallmark of budget pencils because the wood quality might not be sufficient to to prevent the lead colour from seeping through. So they use a white coating to prevent this happening.

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine  Рік тому

      Interesting! The staedler and Faber castell classics both had similar white undercoats. Maybe for the same reason?

    I think for vibrancy you should do number of layers instead of weights of pressure. The more layers a pencil will allow on the paper the better

    • @StuffBySunshine
      @StuffBySunshine  Рік тому +1

      I thought about that for this test, I originally has 14 tests all up (as apposed to the 7 I ended up with) but it was clocking in at over an hr for each episode, so i combined the weight and sat/vibrancy into one. Maybe I should have stuck with that as an extra one. Im getting quite a collection of pencils so i guess if theres interest we could do a specific test like that with multiple brands of pencils at once? 💜

    These are useful reviews, and I hope you are enjoying your Holbein pencils. A shame you didn't get to experience the amazing Holbein Soft White pencil - it is really special!. And, FYI - Holbein is pronounced like Hole-bine (rhymes with vine), not Hole-be-in.

      Ahh! I may have ordered one for a future test😀. I actually went a little crazy when I ordered all the pencils for this series. I really should have looked more closely as there is another set coming up I missed out on the white. Thats ok, i'll do a future special specifically on the white pencil. Oh thankyou! I'll remember that for the future 💜

    Holbain pronunciation.
    Think of Holbein as sounding like hole-bine, where hole is just like the word, and bine rhymes with fine or line. So, it’s not as you are saying it; it’s more like saying hole and then bine, with the ei part pronounced like eye.
    This should help make the pronunciation clearer.

    Japan is known for making what shouldn't work - work.
    This is what I would expect from an art supply trying to meet expectations, as apposed to creating a pencil where the colors behave to there respective nature.
    It's fighting the natural properties of color, to create a consistency across the board.
    I was surprised at the blending test working so well, having to compensate for the other factors.
    Not surprised by the pressure and gradation tests dropping off suddenly.
    Not surprised with the strength test.
    I'm guessing its the use of the binder as a duel purpose for strength and color consistency, as they break slightly easier.
    As you said there is a lot in the attraction factor, something you use and learn to compensate for their flaws.
    I would consider getting them as a support color for use with other colored pencils for the boldness factor.
    It's seems like I could make a comparison of the Faber Castell with the Holbein, with my use of
    Crayola Crayons and Cra-Z-Art Crayons..
    Faber Castle and Crayola for blending and shading, Holbein Ca-Z-Art. for solid layering.
    From what I could tell from your review, I'll go along with your rating as A minus.

      Another wonderful comment 😊💜
      I always wonder if im being to soft or two hard on each pencil (considering the pencil companies share this stuff then promptly hide it I may be too hard 😂) the review that is not the pencil, so its good to know I havent been super controvercial yet!
      Part of what I'm doing with this test is doing an example of (what I see) an art piece that plays to the strengths of each pencil on our friday funday (twitch). I'll be curious if they behave the same when doing that and if you still agree😋

    Rest your arm on a raised wooden rod while doing the grams color test, I've seen watercolor artists use them so their arm won't hover or touch the paint
