In all the years is play bass (started of in 1987) Squier basses didn't get any more expensive but got better in terms of quality.
I have 6 basses, 3 are Squire Affinity Series, a Jazz, a Precision, and a JP bass. I love those because I can fix then up so easy. Each one has Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder Pickups, and Fender Chrome Hi-Mass Bridges, but other rhan that the Affinity Series are definitely put together well.
Been playing guitar for 25 years. Today, I ordered one of these. I always wanted a bass but figured it’s an extra expense I don’t need. That was true 20 years ago, but today you can get such a good guitar or bass for cheap and you can get lessons for free! It’s amazing. Things have changed so much in the last 25 years. It’s unbelievable.
Been a bassist since 8th grade in '67. I'm amazed at the quality of Squire basses these last several years. I work a little in the studio anymore ... but a LOT on stage still, and I own and use an even half-dozen Squire models. Regardless of Jazz or Precision or Jaguar or Telecaster (my "go-to" of late) they're all quality instruments and verrrrrrry confidence-inspiring. I'd highly recommend ANY of them.
All the bass lines you played are exactly what I’m gonna play when i get mine :)
Cool, thanks. Hope you like it when it arrives!
Good quality bass that! If this video helps you make a decision in buying it or not, consider sending me a thank you (in the form of a coffee!), it's really easy to do via this link ko-fi.com/tomsplaceofbass .
I was so impressed with this bass, I replaced my Fender Precision bass with one. Of, course, that was partly because I wanted a Jazz rather than the P-Bass (more comfort), but I enjoyed playing it more than the Fender, and I saw no reason to spend more money on a J.
I had no trouble with the components, but if budget Squier components have you concerned, you can upgrade with excellent aftermarket ones for much less than buying a $1700 bass.
I have sold my Affinity J, but only because I have completely converted to short scales; otherwise, I'd still be using it. By the way, my short scale replacement is a Squier as well.
I agree I did the same
God, this is underrated. Really helped me in choosing this bass as a first (since it's on sale), appreciate it!
Thanks. I hope you like the playing your bass!
how much was it on sale
@@highkeynike At guitar center during Christmas, the bass along with a combo of an amp, gig bag, strap and a sub of Fender play was like $229.29 when it was originally $330 or so

Did you get your bass are you happy with it
A good friend of mine got me this bass, can’t wait to play it. Enjoyed the Mac and Thundercat bass lines too 😌
Cool Jonathan. Wish I had friends like you! Hope you like the bass.
Damn the mac bass lines were so nice
Thanks Patrick!
Thanks for this video man. It’s the best one I’ve seen on the Affinity Squier 👍
Thanks Tom. Really appreciate that!
this is exactly the kind of unbiased review i was looking for! after 4 years of playing bass i'm finally planning to buy a squier, just for the vibe haha. i spent more than €500 on my current electric bass and honestly i kind of regret it. i could've bought a squier jazz and a precision bass for that price for the love of god lol
Thanks for the positive feedback. I have heard really good things about the classic vibe Squiers! I hope you like it.
Awesome review, and Julia is a beast!❤
Squier has come a long way just in the past 5 years
Yeah I agree. I remember their nasty guitars from the 90s!
I got the red version of this bass as my first electric bass (I play upright) and it is really nice
Hey there! The fact that you played licks from Mac Miller songs just made my day !!!
Been playing bass 40 years. I have a 2021 Affinity Jazz in silver. Awesome bass for the money!
excellent little review, exactly what i was looking around for to confirm this is gonna be my first :^)
Great, hope you enjoy learning on it!
Just bought a burgundy mist color.. Its so rad.!
Definitely saving my money for this!
Won't bore all with with my story, but had a perfect P Bass for years, had to part with it years ago, now I was curious if I wanted to resume playing, bought this one from the local shop, hope it gets me back!
Nice and simple review :) I like that you play grooves! Some reviews are a lot of noodling around but here it was easy to hear the Jazz sound ring out. Very cool.
Question for you is about your signal chain. Often I hear this bass sounding a bit harsh but on your signal it has a good warmth and dare I say a bit more J-bass bark.
Again, you got me and I hit subscribe long before the end of the video, lol
Thanks Phil. I just recorded it directly into my Universal Audio Apollo with no eq, so very basic. The Apollo is an excellent interface.
thunder cat line was sick 😎🏴☠️🦑
I just got the new five string version of this bass. It has the standard sized tuners instead of the smaller ones that were on the previous five string Affinity Jazz basses.
you've got the 2021 version? I've ordered mine just now.
@@jmwreck Yes. I like it a lot. I have the Olympic White one.
You did something most bass do not do when reviewing a bass & that is changing the strings! Well done! Many people don't realise good strings on a budget bass can make that bass sound awsome! The only thing I would liked extra on this is the bass setup could have been tweaked for less fret buzz etc, but I have to say, you were àmazing.
Thanks
Thanks again Gary. I agree, its a bit too buzzy and could have done with a set up. I'm still using the Squier regularly and its still working perfectly.
Don't think it is as much of a setup issue as really uneven frets. You can setup for no fretbuzz, but your strings will be 3/8ths to 1/2 an inch off the fretboard to account for all the high frets. Spent 6 hours at GC today, one Squier guitar had 5 dead frets, no sound at all, plus all the fretbuzz and all that other madness, an inability to be intonated past the 5th fret because the saddle screws were pressing on the strings. I'm into Squier's highest lines, though I've watched their prices rise by about 40% since 19. At this point in this dynamic market, you are paying... what percentage of a premium just for a Squier or Fender decal.
In other brands, for the same money, you'd be astonished at the bass you get, like a real bass.
alpha numeric any recommendations for a good beginner bass?
@@Lucy-ng7cw Squier VM or CV bass. These can take you into becoming a gigging basses & you wouldn't necessarily need to change your bass if you didn't want to. Or you could go down the Yamaha or Ibanez route, these are also great bass makers.
Bless
@@Lucy-ng7cw Seriously, one of these or a base model from Ibanez or yamaha.
Lmao I love this because of the thundercat songs alone great review man
Thanks Alex
Killer demo! Loved the little song @1:25. Thanks for posting. 👍
Mac Miller - Circles ;)
@@Gulatzo true,thanks.
I got this bass in blue but the tone knob is broken. It doesn’t turn down in volume. I should probably get it fixed. I really should have brought it back after I discovered the fault but I forgot about it & then didn’t use my bass again for months, so now it’s past the warranty time 😢
What strings would you recommend ? Thanks
Great video! I'm new to bass and have the same one. I notice there is quite a bit of string buzz coming out even though I got the neck adjusted and strings replaced at a local shop. Maybe its just me and I have to get used to it. I noticed even when you play there is a bit of buzz. I suppose I'm just picky.
With a quality set-up and the fret ends polished smooth, most of the Affinity basses will totally hold their own. I challenge anyone to be able to tell a dime's worth of difference in sound between these and much more expensive Fender basses.
Components notwithstanding, how was the fit and finish including fret ends and the finish on the body on the bass you were playing?
What is it with squier and making surprisingly high quality low budget jazz basses?
Owned a Jaco and a fender deluxe American at one point, hit rock bottom had to sell em. 10 years later getting back into music and I’ll tell you these squires aren’t the squires of the 90’s. The affinity jazz I picked up is practically identical to a fender MIM jazz 600$ honestly if you shielded your pups some and some light sanding/fret work/bone nut/high mass bridge you’ll have yourself a standard fender jazz bass. So I’m total doing all upgrades myself I got a 210$ affinity dropped about 90ish into upgrades (all work done myself) so I created a 300$ standard fender jazz. There’s no noticeable difference in feel or tone now. Makes ya think don’t it lol. I dropped well over 3gs on two fender bases at one point in time lol. You’ll get everything you need done with the affinity series. Just inspect her top to bottom as quality control willnt be AS consistent. Then shield them pups. Other then that and adjusting your truss rod and making sure your neck is straight your good to go.
That's great. I'm always a bit terrified about doing the work you mentioned because I worried I'll f it up. I remember my Chinese Squier Strat from the 90's, it was so rubbish (but I loved it anyway because I didn't know any better!)
@@Guitartomguitar same haha and I’ll admit I completely ruined a squire p bass before trying to do fret work. It is extremely finicky work, but even finding a good luthier to do the work nothings crazy expensive other then refretting the neck about 200$ back when I was active in music. And at that point it’s more economical to just buy a fender p bass neck offline for 200-300$ if you can find one and ofcourse that’s standard. Haha man them old squire basses and guitars were so rufff. If anything the neck quality of today’s squires have improved dramatically and I’m confident in saying they are close to the MIM fenders. New pickups and a solid shield job in the cavities and there is not a difference between them. You’ll pay about 600$ for a mim and you can create the same bass through a squire for 350$ at max. But people will throw money to get that pretty Fender logo on their headstock, I use to be one of them haha. I also think Warwick basses feel like holding a tree branch and are way too heavy and uncomfortable, so I don’t know how credible my opinion is haha. Loved the vid man.
@@BlackHeron89 I wish I had your skills at putting a bass together from parts! It must be really rewarding when you put together something nice. Yeah everyone wants that American Fender on the headstock though but how Fender make the money! Happy new year.
@@Guitartomguitar happy new year brother. Stay safe out there.
Hi, what combination do you prefer?
OKAYYY I SEE YOU WITH THE MAC MILLER BASSLINE
OOK THUNDERCAT TOOO
THE INTERNET TOOO DAMNN I SEE YOU WHAT
Oh and i forgot to say yea I just recently ordered this I cant wait till it comes!
Haha yeah I love those bass lines! Enjoy your bass!
is this good enough for live sets
What amp do you use for this bass?
Yoo the Kendrick Lamar bassline 🔥
I see SO MUCH hate for the Squier Affinity line, but those people invariably end up going on to say that when you show up at a professional audition or to record an album that people will talk shit to you. It's so weird. Like, how many people picking up a Squier Affinity are going to go from the guitar shop to the studio to record with Snarky Puppy or audition to be the latest bassist holding it down for Megadeth?
Idk man. The Squier Affinity seems pretty solid.
Yes
Can I use it in pro gigs?
Squier affinity o Yamaha 174?
If I got this, I would get some Aguilar pickups cuz these don't sound that great :(
Have one on the way. Gloss Black though lol
Cool Randy, hope you like it!
Glenn Fricker says great bang for his buck.
Hi man, I am a guitarist and I just bought this bass. I configured the intonation and the tuning at around the middle and high of the fretboard is off! Checked action and relief as well. Strings still from factory. Is this problem might be the factory strings? Thanks and nice video.
Thanks George. Sorry to hear that you're having that issue. It may well be the strings, they may have been on the bass for a while. I always change the strings when I get a new bass, if only to make the bass sound it's best. I haven't experienced what you mention, so it's hard to say exactly, but the strings may be the issue.
First bass line was from jamiroquai lol
Edit: hold on by the internet too? You got your bases covered my dude lmao
Thanks. Hold on By the Internet is a severely underrated bassline!
2:25 HELL YEAH THUNDERCAT
Concise
thanks Robin. I don't like to waste anyones time!
Hey should i pick this or yamaha bb434
I would say the Yamaha is a better bass (sorry for the late reply!)
Hey m8 I’m trying to spend around 250-300 on a new bass any recommendations?
I want something very versatile
Yamaha trbx174, Epiphone Toby standard, Cort action PJ, Ibanez gsr320, there are many options.
Hi Jayden. Is that 250-300 US Dollars or UK Pounds?
This bass mate

Sounds is not rich .. I m a guitarist . But price is good . Maybe I m gonna pay more for good bass . Thanks for video.
no worries, thanks.
bon bon bong ...buchaka bum bum de bong !!
Are the frets sharp?
I haven't had any issues, or seen any comments that people have experienced sharp frets.
jamiroquai! nice…
I bought my daughter one of these and I played a Mexican Fender and I liked the Squire better.
Thanks Donnie. The more I play the Squier the more I like it.
(edit: Also I wish my kids were interested in playing the bass!)
**another bites the dust**
this bass sounds terrible to any other kind of decent bass
