    The 1964 356 was near the end of the line for Porsche’s original rear-engined sports car, and the SC was the factory hot rod. By that we mean it has 95 horsepower instead of the regular 356 C’s 75 hp, which is more than enough to accelerate this lightweight convertible to highway speeds quickly. Four-wheel disc brakes stopped it even more quickly. This 356 SC 1600 Cabriolet received a high-quality bare-metal restoration several years ago - find out what it’s like to drive a mint example of one of the last 356s in this One-Mile Review.

    As beautiful as that car is, knowing the background and that the owner has had it longer than I've been alive REALLY touches my heart. Fantastic color combination...there is just something about a Porsche in red leather. As you drive away I can just imagine the fellow in yellow w/the fanny pack saying a silent prayer-LOL.

    Yes! Skip's car is a gem. I've done some miles in it and it's fabulous-- like its owner and his wonderful wife, Suesan.

    Definitely a great classic Porsche. A friend has owned his 356 SC for about 30 years and put many fun miles in it. He now drives it occasionally as the value have gone a bunch, but it remains a solid and fun car to drive.

    I have same car and for years made small improvements. Now has 4G fourth gear which makes it more enjoyable on interstates, when required. Just got a new cabrio top. Occasionally add a stone chip. But not thinking of a repaint for then it may become a garage queen. So many won't drive their car because of value. I have insurance and hope for the best and just drive for the enjoyment. Yesterday changed headlights to led, so i can drive with lights on all the time. Still grease and adjust the valves too.

    Love my 1963 356B Cabriolet. Still has the original red leather interior. During the down to metal restoration, the previous owner changed the color from the grey to Porsche metallic silver. Just had a big bore engine rebuild with the Zenith carbs "restored", replaced the front drums with disc brakes, LED tailgate kit, and a 40W Aurora Bluetooth digital radio kit insert with Alpine speakers for my blues while driving.

    Just met up with a friend who brought his 1965 356 SC to Daytona for The Roar and Rolex24. It will be in the corral next weekend. Beautiful car!
    Great review Damon! Hope you can make it to the Rolex next weekend.

      Thank you! Is it Mark P with the 356 you're talking about? I think Mark's is older, actually. Unfortunately I won't be at Daytona this year, but PCA will have a reporter on the ground who's a member and enthusiast (and a pretty good photographer). His name's Ryan Carignan and used to work for PCA.

      @@damonlowney not Mark; he’s running around Miami this weekend, but should be in the corral for the Rolex. Hope to see you at Werks Amelia then. Manny mentioned he was interested in using my car for an OMD segment. Just let me know.

    Great 356 in my most desirable color combination. I used to have a 1960 356B T5 Super Coupe. I feel compelled to offer something about the daily driver rating. For me, I would never arrive at my destination on time because the car garnered a lot of attention, from anyone who used to have a 356 to people who knew nothing about the car. People loved to ask about the car, and I loved talking about the car. I feel that is one of the attributes that sets the 356 apart from all other Porsche models. During the five years of ownership, I would say that now I know what it's like to be the most handsome person around. Everyone is looking at you. So, for daily driving, only do so if you are willing to take the time to talk about your car and are not in a hurry. Additionally, the value, especially for good examples like this one and mine, is so high now that daily driving is not ideal.

    Another great review of a great car. thanks. It is really too bad that these cars are now so valuable that it is not wise to go out and drive the hell out of them--or use them as a daily driver. I have a 2014 Carrera 991, red and beautiful inside and out; it is not worth much so I feel comfortable driving it around town and on trips. The irony of Porsche ownership is the nicer and more expensive the care is the less we drive it, depending upon CTEK chargers to keep our cars alive.

    My first Porsche was a 1965 356 SC. I wish I had been able to keep it. There was a switch under the dash for extra gas. It was a 1.6 updated to 1.8 kit from VW & Porsche magazine Also, mine had the fueling cap for the gas tank in the trunk. In a English racing green color with carry rack . If a Uhauler hadn't back up and over my front, I think I'd still have it today. Original purchase price $1000.0 in 1975.😎

    Great vid and the colour combo I would choose if I was replacing mine.
    I have used my 356C as a daily during the summer for the last few years, easy to live with, small, light and a break from heavy modern stuff. I can support the scoring it can be used as a daily, I use it for the school run, cafe, etc.

    Any details on how that 3 point seat belt is installed? I have a 1960 Roadster and one of the difficulties of the 3 point belt kits in a convertible is there isn't a B-pillar to mount it on.

    Great review. My only Porsche is a 718 Cayman, which is fast, great handling, and has modern features like A/C and cruise control, but there is nothing like a 356 in great condition like the one you drove. I have a manual transmission, though, maybe one of the last.

  • @Jastor00
    @Jastor00 Рік тому +1

    The difference in shifting feel between the C and the Speedster could be a lot of things. Perhaps the Speedster wasn't as well sorted as you suggest. The transmissions themselves are different and the linkage between the trans and the shifter is much more simplified for the later cars than the early ones. I personally haven't driven a "monkey motion" early trans car. I hope to try one some day!

    Can you tell us exactly what SC equates to in the world of Porsche..? I owned an 82 911 SC

    • @PorscheClubofAmerica
      @PorscheClubofAmerica  Рік тому +4

      The 356 C driver's manual refers to C and SC as engine types, or 1600 C and 1600 SC to be precise. We believe in the 356's case it means Super C. In the the case of your 911, SC stands for Super Carrera, which can be seen on Porsche's website: www.porsche.com/international/accessoriesandservice/classic/models/911-g/911-sc/
