  • Update, we are now looking at a completion date of April 2025 to compliment the Airport Metro Connector's completion in 2025.
The APM will have nine trains, each with four cars. Each car will carry up to 50 passengers and their luggage, with a total of 200 per train. Train speed will top out at 47 mph. Trains will be available at each station every two minutes with a total of 10 minutes travel time end-to-end. For easy access, the APM trains will have large, wide doors and each car will have 12 seats designated for travelers in need. The APM will be FREE for all users and operate at all times. Anticipated use will be 30 million passengers per year.
The APM trains, elevators, escalators, and moving sidewalks provide for quick access to the terminals and stations. Passengers will be able to view real-time flight information, public art in a variety of media, and will see the iconic Theme Building from a brand new perspective as the train enters the Central Terminal Area.
In addition to reducing traffic, the APM will leverage cutting-edge sustainability practices to reduce the airport area’s carbon footprint. The system’s fleet will consist of 44 cars that are fully electric powered, 98% recyclable, and generate a portion of their own power through regenerative breaking, while providing an industry-leading ride quality for users. Our command center and maintenance facility generates nearly half of its power from solar energy and is designed to be LEED Gold Certified. These design enhancements allowed the team to offset the carbon equivalent of 12 million vehicle miles driven.
The APM is an historic investment in Los Angeles’ emerging businesses and workforce. More than $580 Million has been identified for local, small or disabled veteran-owned businesses, with $94 Million commitment exclusively to local, small businesses right here in Los Angeles. The project will create more than 2,000 construction jobs, with 30% of those opportunities being reserved for residents of Los Angeles as well as highly impacted communities near LAX. Sixty percent of careers during the 25-year Operations and Maintenance phase are designated for local workers. LINXS, the selected APM developer-has built partnerships with community-based organizations to focus on expanding the pipeline of workers, especially those from non-traditional backgrounds. Through more than $900,000 in investments, the project will create infrastructure career pathways for women, former foster youth, individuals in reentry and transitioning out of gang involvement, and persons with disabilities. HireLAX, LAWA’s Apprenticeship Readiness Program, will be a key partner in this effort, as will other resources offered by the Building Trades and other industry partners. Beginning in March 2018, LINXS will host an on-site career resources office.

Don't understand why you're shaming the buses. They're saving more space than they're taking up. Exactly what the APM is meant to do.

I agree. It's some sort of enviro elitist point of view I'm guessing. He has no idea how many people are on the bus.... but it's still a "waste of space". I thought John was more sensible to be a ding dong like that.

Not officially true. The LAWA website still says it will open in 2024. That April 2025 date comes from a Fitch rating service report that speculated the project will be delayed, and that the news media picked up.

Update: the LAX/Metro Transit Center station is now projected to open in 2024. I'm having trouble revisiting the places where I read this; updates happen in Metro newsletters, but that information is not always updated on their relevant web pages.
But as I understand it, Metro will start running trains through there BEFORE the separate People Mover project into the airport is complete. After this happens, I would expect the LAX shuttle buses will no longer go to Aviation Station on the C line, but will temporarily go to the new transit center instead, until the People Mover opens.
It could also be that LAX shuttles would run to the Century station instead, but I don't know if there's bus infrastructure (loading zones/ bus stops) at that station. So I don't think they will use the Century station for that.

To defend John's statement about the bus taking up space, I'm sure he was just referring to the amount of actual physical space it takes up on the road, and not about its efficiency to transport passengers compared to personal vehicles.
The good thing is that neither personal vehicles nor buses should be using the horseshoe once the APM is operational.

    • @JEK
      @JEK  Місяць тому +2

Thanks. Not anti-bus, just making an observation; part of the problem with traffic in the horseshoe. The hard part once the APM is in use, will be keeping people out of the loop and utilizing pick ups and drop offs at the ITF stations. But in theory, it should be way faster riding the APM (which claims is 10 min. in total-Conrac to Bradley)

They're making good progress again. I checked the LAWA website about 2 weeks ago, and it still says the APM will open this year.
I really like the idea of covering the old parking structures with those vertical louvers. It's a relatively simple cosmetic change that can go a long way to make LAX more stylish by complimenting what they've already done at the new Conrac structure.
That truncated pedestrian bridge for the future Concourse 0 looks weird, but it's good they're doing it now. Have you heard any information on when they plan to start construction of it?
How about Terminal 9? Anything going on over there?
    That's for another informative update.

@@JEK Not likely. LAWA has not approved the financing plan for T0. Southwest is working on it. As for T9, last word was LAWA was going to hold a design competition and then pursue financing and a contractor. It is NOT likely any or all of that will happen before 2026. ... The APM has been delayed by a disagreement with the contractor. LAWA has been keeping this development to itself. But in a prospectus for a bond offering, one of the ratings agencies reported that the APM will not begin operating this year because of the conflict.
