Here you are 5 years later still helping people with this video. Thank you very much
Excellent video, I was able to fix mine after watching this video! Now my truck is nice and warm,,, thank you!
Glad to hear
Great job Ezrider359 !!!
Tips from a certified Espar tech (Do your homework before jumping in and raising the cost of your repairs):
1) Maintain the area well ventilated where the Espar D2 unit is located. It has a internal temp sensor and if the D2 is in an enclosed space or there is stuff covering it or blocking air circulation, the D2 will not work like it should/heat the space like you want.
2) Learn to perform regular maintenance on the D2. Learn your equipment, it is not hard, and save paying $100-$700 for a 'service call'.
3) Approximately once every three months, run the D2 using a quart of kerosene. It will clean the D2 as it burns and lengthens the possibilities of problems between maintenance.
4) When removing the rubber boot from the top of the glow plug, gently roll the boot off the plug. Do not pull or yank on the boot. When reinstalling the rubber boot, gently roll the boot into position and ensure a good seal.
5) The main challenge with maintaining the D2 is removing the atomizer screen. You will need something similar to a small narrow dental pick and narrow/long needle nose pliers. Gently insert the pick between the screen and combustion chamber wall, deform the screen inward enough to then grab with the needle nose pliers, while slowly pulling out in a circular motion if able. Best of luck as it took me 45 minutes with the wrong tools.
6) The glow plug can be cleaned with a green 3M Scotchbrite pad and last thousands of hour. Treat it gently and reuse it.
7) When the atomizer screen is installed, align the spot welds on the opposite side (180 degree away from) of the burner induction hole (well toward the inside of the D2 unit).
8) When installing the glow plug, do not over tighten. Snug it up with about 1-2 ft/lbs torque.
9) Take pictures/videos during your careful disassembly to help you reassemble the D2 correctly.
10) Ezrider359 video, above info, and the kit linked will keep your D2 running well and save you money. LINK: www.amazon.com/dp/B0BMWPXPLC/ref=syn_sd_onsite_desktop_299?ie=UTF8&psc=1&pd_rd_plhdr=t
Thanks for all info.Mine showing “overheat” fault and shuts down 5 min after start up. What should I do?
Another great video I've found to that if you run your heater on high for 10 mins once a month even in summer or at oil change time it seems to go farther in between services
Ian Bliss is out here with the best tutorial for repairing diesel-fired heaters. 👈😎👉
Very good presentation. Thank you. You can also remove the glow plug without a slotted socket by using a wrench on the exposed hex AFTER you have opened the front fan assembly chamber (see image at t=5:45) - no special tools required - just a 14 mm open wrench.....
never really thought of that but it would probably work.
@@Ezrider359 Heh, heh.... I only know this because just minutes before watching your video I learned this technique from ua-cam.com/video/nBFCWPClr8A/v-deo.html (watch t=11:50)...... BTW it is a 12 mm not a 14 mm as I incorrectly stated previously.... I cannot take credit for this information .... credit goes to David McLuckie. Cheers.
Most annual service you are doing this without removing from truck or taking apart that is why the special socket or open socket work well.
Awesome guy saved my Bucks thanks bro
Thank you very much! Straight to the point directions
thank you
Thank you for the video...You are saving yourself a lot of money doing your own repairs..Have a blessed day..
Excellent presentation. Thank you.
You are great. Thanks fir information
Excellent video! Thank you.
High temp gray! Best gasket in Dee werlds‼️✅
Awesome video. Thanks man
Best one I’ve seen so far. Direct & on point.
Hey brother I have a espar d2 heater bunk won't start , I connect the red and yellow cables from ecm if does nor start means that ecm is bad?
A brother thanks for the info, any idea if I’m getting code 13 overheat, thanks
Nice video, but be very carefully with the music. Usually the tech videos are better without the music. But hey thats just my opinion.
Thanks, I don't use music in all my videos. This one did fairly heavily because the wooden work bench transfered a lot of annoying background noise into the camera mic using some low volume music makes the audio sound cleaner when background noise is a problem
I say it was ok ,not to loud
@@pauls466 thanks
Please, advise part numbers for adomiser, gasket etc. Thank you for the video!
Yes please did anybody find out where he got the force at what part numbers to get particularly that gasket in item atomizer screen? screen
Esparparts.com then go to esparcheter or (whatever the full name is) site and look for nearest dealer. Call them after you found the part numbers on esparparts.com then go pick up your parts :)

Get the gasket for under the burner chamber as well, they always need replaced. If you register with Eberspacher you can look up your heater serial number and the parts it uses on their webite. Many of the rebuild kits on ebay will have the screen and 2 gaskets in the kit but you really only need the burner chamber one and the screen, screen it not easy to get clean again as it is a few cylindrical layers of screen wound one over the other. Ebay search "espar d2 screen gaskets"
Nice thanks, my heater all the time began to work than stopped began again to work and stopped and than it began to heat after that process it also was stinky inside by starting, and now at the end error appeared it wasnt no more possible to heat
So i found your video cleaned everything like you and now first try heating all is okay no problems
Thanks alot
It really made me angry the last months more and more :PP
The china 'heater is also very good!
You are referring to the diesel/gasoline air heaters that are made in China? Which particular brand? Are some better than others?
Nice job
thanks bud
My installer used a mounting plate. I'm kind of pissed because they cut a big hole to route everything through. But my question is, when you take the fuel line off, doesn't, air get in the system? Doesn't fuel leak out?
Excellent video on how to service the D2 !! You saved me $700 !!
glad it helped you
Thanks again!!
Ive had mine for 5 years now.
I service it myself too.
Recently its not doing anything at all when i turn it on. Fuse is good.
What do you think it can be?
May I ask how much would you charge for doing this?
ive got a slotted slocket. now where did i put that ?
Wow, it starts right away and without white smoke!!! Good video, thank you.
You're welcome!
I keep hearing that if you can run the heater on Kerosene every few months it will help keep it clean. Haveany input on that idea? Thanks for the video.
I have never seen it help
Why doesn’t anyone in these videos tell us what size socket the glow plug uses?!
Thanks for the video. Question I have no power at all , where is the fuse of this system in the volvo vnl?
Can I take my Espar Heater out & ship it to you & you clean it and send back.
Great job what about website heaters.
Hi, the heater can work without the grid screen tube?
Pretty good job. What I like to do is put the combustion chamber in a 1 gallon Ziploc bag with a cup or two of acetone. Shake it for about 5 mins and hit it with a pipe snake and wire brush. Repeat w acetone to rinse and good as new. How often do you do clean your espar? I seem to only get about 2 winters.
i might try soaking it in acetone next time. seems like i have to do at least a atomizer screen and poke a pick threw the combustion air hole at least every year. to actually take it apart and clean it could go 2 years. depends a lot on the quality of fuel you get as well.
What size is the slotted wrench, thanks….-
I wish all how videos were made like this. No BS
glad you enjoyed it, i make a effort to keep all my very much to the point and on topic. it annoys me when i have to skip threw 15 mins of crap not related to the topic of the video when i watch other peoples videos.
Спасибо!
Как у лучшего школьного учителя!🫡
I sonic clean them for Walmart trucks.
My burner chamber clogs up after 3 hours.
While I do not see this mentioned, there is a fuel pump screen that needs to be replaced at the same time with the atomizer screen. A clogged fuel pump screen symptom is a lot of smoke when start up is attempted and or a failed start.
yeah i normally do them when i service them as well probably forgot to mention it.
Followed the directions, got all back together and now it’s pulling an error code. It looks like N 51.
Any tips? Thanks.
051 - FAULTY FLAME RECOGNITION
1. Document codes, clear codes, and run unit.
This code is cause from a hard shutdown (power cut off) which prevents a cool down. If upon next start the sensed temperature is excessive the unit will
run a cool down cycle. If the sensed temperature doesn’t fall enough a Code 051 is set. This can be a loose power wire or using the master cutoff while
the unit is running.
2. If problem persists install test flame sensor.
3. If problem is resolved leave sensor in, clear codes, and run unit.
Also refer to Code 52 for no-start situations.
How long did you go before before you started having the problems with it?
I believe the recommended service interval is 1000 hours of operation. I'd have to check the litiature to be sure on that number but for me every year in the fall I start having issues with it and service it and then it's good all year
Hi, wondering if you know about the ventilation mode that pushes in outside air, and wether the vent from the outside air intake into the cabin is always open or controlled open and close? I'm getting some exhaust in the cabin and investigating/ruling out all possible routes and wondered about this one.
The outside air tube is only for combustion air it does not bring air into the cabin. I'd inspect the exhaust and make sure nothing is cracked or leaking under the truck and then if that's all good I'd pull out the heater and disassemble looking for failed gaskets or cracks in the heat exchanger
@@Ezrider359 Thanks, I'll look into those glow plug and fuel line gaskets and ant then air chamber gaskets, and for cracks, then its the combustion chamber gaskets, but backpressure when the heaters slows down to cool, is when i get a strong whiff of exhaust from the vent.
I've already reposition the exhaust to stick out the side of the van a about and inch, and that has mad a big difference, and also stop blowing my maxxair roof fan out to clear the smell cause it just sucked more in from underneath, lol, lungs still irritated for 3 days now subjecting myself to all these fumes.
- Mount seals are tight, clamps are tight. intake 7 foot away from exhaust, but wind can easily push it there, which shouldn't make a difference since it's suppose to be separated from cabin air flow, other than incomplete combustion.
BTW the new S2 D2 Does push fresh air in from the intake.
"5.5.2 Ventilate
In this operating mode, the heater supplies the vehicle interior with fresh outdoor air via the ventilation louvres. This operating mode is only possible if the function is supported by the heater version (see also Technical Description of the Heater)."
where do you find the socket with the cut out for the glow pin?
Those glow pin sockets are one use only.Get a 12mm socket and cut a slot in it.Use a 12mm spark plug type socket that you can get a wrench on.Use an off set 12 mm wrench.
Do you have carbon-monoxide ALARM in your sleeper??? If not, pls get one.
These are no more dangerous than the engine running all the exhaust and combustion air is outside the truck there is a heat exchanger in the unit so no combustion gases are in the vehicle.
Where is your shop ? Address please
Great video. Internet is full of discussions how to fix a non starting or steaming diesel heater. That's the way you can fix it easily. Works for similar units with other trade names like Webasto, Eberspächer, Vevor, Planar etc.
Be sure to have at least the new inner gasket . D2 and D4 have different gaskets.
Thank you for your videos. I have a question regarding the bunker heater I have in my truck. I had an issue with my ap unit before but the heater was still working. Now the heater is not working at all. I keep getting a yellow triangle error on there. First I did a total rebuild. Changed all casket, fuel pump, fuel line, still no heat. What do you recommend I do next?
I need helpe pls
Mine works through the apu but
It rurn on for 30 min or so and it goes off and wont go on again
Most likely it's due to be cleaned and serviced
Im having issues with the fan on this heater was working fine last night and now it doesn't blow air at all. The thermostat seems to be working not sure what to look for
wondering if you can help.. i have a d4 diesel heater (not a lot of use) and it has a h1 service code. i cant find any info ANYWHERE on what that service is
I thought I was the only one that doesn't wair playtex
Figures I took it apart before I found this video and no parts suppliers open on a weekend. Wonder if I can use high temp silicone. Haha
Great video I highly recommend running it on high about ounce a month why your home or in the shower with the windows cranked let it clean itself out full blast for atleast 3 hrs this will help having to tear it down so much
Mine just gave out , I paid thermo king over 1,200 to fix mine just last year around this time.
I'm going to just use a small electric heater and run my APU, I wish I had the means to fix it like you do, I'm not paying 1200 again .
wow, 1,200 to fix your heater, you can buy a entire new replacement heater on ebay for a little more than half that. a new atomizer screen is like $11 the most expensive part service part is the glow pin and they rarely fail and you can get them with the special socket for about $90 a gaskets are under $20, most the time for a annual service all you need to do is replace the atomizer screen and clean the combustion air hole, don't even need to remove the heater to do that. i could see 1200 mabye for installing a new heater in a truck that has never had one including labor and having to install the fuel pickup and run the all the wiering ect, but 1200 to repair one seems way steep to me.
@@Ezrider359
Yea , I got screwed over,
it was working just b4 Thanksgiving.
Bad thing tho was it never turned off , once I turned it on it would fry me to death so I used it only in extreme cold temps and at that I'd leave the side window open, for some reason it didnt shut off, that should have been fixed with the 1200 I paid.
I dont know if its worth fixing again , maybe just run my electric heater off my APU.
What would you charge me if I sent it to you 4 repair .?
@@rrios28 it really seems for what you paid they should have replaced the entire system including the controller with new, if it was me i would swing by a different thermoking dealer and see if they will fix it under warranty. they should come with a 1 year manufactures warranty.

Thanks for showing how easy it is ! Now I can show them your vid so they dont have to bother me anymore ! lol
lol thanks, yeah there really isn't a whole lot to them.
I have a question,
I did everything you said and now my heater is not working I even changed the fuel pump and the only thing working is the fan.
Everything is good but I don't see the new fuel pump working or hearing the heater on making a sound on heat.
What is the problem?
Sounds like a electrical problem. If you had it apart for service is mabye double check all the electrical plugs first make sure they all have a good connection
This is likely what is up with mine , has a lot of hours on it and hasn’t been serviced.
Sloted socket.... Of what size?
12mm
He didn't show how to put in the screen, otherwise it was simple enough.
You just push the screen in with the little plastic tool that comes with the screen
Now where is my slotted socket?
Does any know part number for burner and ignition
This looks hard
Is it safe to use dyed diesel fuel to run my espar d2 heater??
Yes
Gaskets will be fine for meany of times over
They tend to get very hard and brittle sometimes you can get away with reusing them other times they will fall into pieces
Dang that bunk has more oil in the floor, than the crankcase holds.
What about cleaning the other side of the burn chamber?
Thank you Sir , very helpful video , keep doing such a videos .
Awesome video!!! My heater works like new!
Hey how is fix code E-6?
id have to check and see what a e-6 code is almost sounds more like a thermoking engine code.
Where I can buy the 12mm tool to remove the glow pin.. everywhere I look they want to sell it with the glow pin what is about $100.00?
first time i did it i bought it with a new glow pin so id have a spare if i ever broke the wires off, you could make your own though that would be a lot better than the one you get with a new glow pin, i believe its 10mm rather than (i may be wrong on that) 12 but you could get a normal deep well socket put it in a vice and use a cut off wheel to cut a slot in it for the wires to go.
@OTR48V trucker: You can remove the glow plug without a slotted socket by using an open 12 mm wrench on the exposed hex AFTER you have opened the front fan assembly chamber (see image at t=5:45) - no special tools required.!!! See ua-cam.com/video/nBFCWPClr8A/v-deo.html (watch t=11:50).
I just had my local ThermoKingDealerLocator order me one...was about $60 and it is made from an impact socket...the one that comes with the glow pin is a one time use tool. Made of cheap metal and spreads open when used.
Of course if you have an open socket set that works fine too. Different then a regular socket set
@@JamesRhodes1973 i have been using the "one time" use socket for a while now, its fine but you have to be careful with it. it is defiantly made of cheap metal and pretty flimsy. the glow pins should not be installed very tight however, when my cheap socket no longer works ill probably just cut a slot in a cheap harbor freight 12mm socket to make my own. nice to know you can get a nice one from thermoking though.
Where ur shop at ive got same problem
Same procedure for the regular gas heater?
Good job, where is your repair shop located? Thank you
im located in Bismarck north dakota, however i am not really a open to the public repair shop. mostly just work on all my own old junk....lol

i think any gasket material would probably work though i think they cut them from the drops from cutting the chamber gaskets. i would be surprised if the tips of the fins see 200* so even cork gasket would probably be ok. if you have some of those sheet of make your own gasket material laying around would probably be ok to put it back together without them as well
Hey my espar bunk heater shutdown after 10 min then red show and say overheat what should I do
make sure nothing is obstructing the air inlet/outlet.
Good video but that looks like a lot of work
good program but why the background racket ???
Hows that pete coming?
Doing some work on it today 👍
How do I bleed the heater
Was that gasket pieces falling out ?
When you remove it, do you need a drip pan for fuel? Do you need to do anything to make sure no fuel leaks out?
Only a few drops. Catch it with some paper.
Mine is really noisy do you think this will help make it quieter
If it's the exhaust that is loud I wouldn't really expect it to make much difference. They do make mufflers for them tho. If the fan is noisy taking it apart and cleaning it and checking the fan isn't rubbing anything may help
My Espar Controller has no power, please help. The Controller does not turn on and no lights comes on the controller.
Thank you.

Check the fuse.
Thank you🙏
What is the socket number ? And if you want cleaned do you have to replace ademizer screen or not? Can you remove with out slideing socket and thank you somuch I do service my thermo king most of the staff never service before heather it smoke a lot
My heater is smoking and not working properly at all that's why I'm here watching & reading.
12mm
You can clean screen with yellow torch but you have to be very careful taking it out.
8mm screw will work. Good luck
You can also just disconnect fuel line and stick it a jar of kerosene and then turn Espar on highest setting. Let it run for 1hr and it should burn off any carbon build up.
seriously?
You can run the Espar heater on Kerosene. It is cleaner burning and better at high altitudes.
Great job at throwing insights into this repair!! No nonsense! Thumbs up Thanks!
thank you
So is this an issue that you have to keep taking it apart to clean like this? If so, these heaters are junk. Mine is showing a no flame detected code and it’s a brand new truck and unit. Ridiculous. But excellent video so thank you brother
they should be serviced once a year, every other year i take it apart and clean it the other years it gets a new atomizer screen and clean the combustion air hole. keeps it working good. and yes if you keep getting the no flame detected code it probably needs to be serviced.

At what angle does the pump need to be set at?
i think its recommended to be installed on a 15-30* upward angle (off the top of my head so might not be 100% accurate...lol)
thanks
Good video, my bunk heater keeps saying no flame detected would cleaning it out fix this or is it a igniter issue?
Might have a bad glow pin or severely clogged glow pin. Also check and make sure that the little hole that directs combustion air into the burner chamber is not clogged.
Where u located to fix my please
