I agree with "we shouldn't punish a player with character levels" that is no fun for anyone. And I think you suggesting empathy/open mindedness towards kevin is very kind. I read it as "Kevin wants to take the easy route" but it could be many things. I also think that the ultimatum stuff is just really really offputting. I think that if I was in a game and presented with an ultimatum - I would probably not want to play with them anymore. That really made me not like kevin.
Personally I like when my players ask for stuff cause I'll allow it only by negotiations. Namely I focus on World Building Elements and I've created literal nations and history. But I never use all of it cause I've learned players can feel overwhelmed. So each time the party takes a short rest or long rest I take the time to discuss new plot elements. Like I'll give yall the options for D,E and F. If you allow A B and C. Then we continue this process. As I told CinderBlocksally I had DM a large group of mixed play styles. And at first it was frustrating, but then I simply gave up control and allowed my evil to awaken. My first role is that if a player dies I get their character to use as part of my evil Kabal. I call them the Heartless. Modified the Reborn race. Essentially they don't have a soul their bodies are being used against their will. They need to absorb the essence of players new character to be free.
Honestly, I don't necessarily disagree with the DMs decision not to grant a level. It's a rule I've told my groups. You have to participate in the fight in some way to gain the level. Even if you miss all your attacks, you tried. Climbing a rope and holding action isn't participating.
I always think to myself "how would I answer/give advice for this scenerio. SteelySam, you are more patient and clear than I could have been. And I appreciate you.
Sounds to me like Kevin probably found someone talking on the internet about how rope trick can be "broken" in dnd and was trying it out in the session. He may not have realized how it would affect the rest of the party and may just need a talk about party dynamics and being a team player.
It almost never happens, but during s0, i do tell my players that if loot distribution starts causing arguments or is always a massive, unpleasant debate, we'll switch to assigned loot.
I just wanted to let you guys know that me and my friends are dnd fans. But late last night there house caught on fire and burned down! So now they have nothing. So we just need your guy’s prayers right now. 🙏🏽 Also, I went into there destroy home this afternoon and I found nearly all of are dnd books in the house and all but one are still readable! 📚📘📖 still I little smoky and burnt.
Hey Steely. I enjoy your shorts and your videos a lot. I have a request for you: could you make a new video series? Guides on how to make specific kinds of villains such as necromancers, clerics of an evil god, cultists of certain demon or devil, etc. I absolutely need inspirations right now, and the community could really use more videos on how to make being the dungeon master fun. I'm tired of being fed with recommendations for player characters and character builds when I'm looking for guides, tips, ideas and inspirations for dungeon master. Being the forever DM of my party, I'm a little burnt out. I created a really cool BBEG for my new campaign, but I could use ideas forcharacters that work for the big villain.
When I was DM and one of the players wanted to be a farie (I don't know if it's been converted to 5th) I told her 'no', but she kept trying, eventually I homebrewed a race for her and she ended up loving it Even 10+ years later she's one of the two players of that group that I'd like to reconnect with They did say that Kevin was holding his action, that's a continual thing, so he was 'present' for the combat, but not 'active'
I have a problem bending to the players rules. No I'm not talking about railroading. I'm talking. I think even though if the majority of players want you don't give them it. My player is always ask for magic items or loot? It doesn't make sense for them to always have it or have the exact item they want. I find there has to be some give and take here
Hey sam, I have a question about reborns and other lineages... If you pick reborn from the start, will you still be able to have two races (like changeling and reborn)?
You're gonna tell me that a DM couldn't come up with something with a boss creature to get Kevin in the fight lol. Because he rolled high initiative and hid in a hole? Be creative.
The ad before I start this video "what I'm about to tell you to do is very dangerous"

None of them should have leveled up for putting that ultimatum.
So childish
Should’ve gave him a level but gave everybody else some good loot his ass missed out on

Holy crap! This channel made me realize why D&D therapy is a thing.
Give the participants a boon of some degree but dont affect the player's levels
