@@ZachCampbell I have to say this for all the BLACK WOMEN WHO LOVE COUNTRY MUSIC and don’t fit into the mold of being the black girl stereotype of being loud ( I’m subtle with my shit feel free to read this in ur next Skype call)
Being black in America ( a retrospective)
“Just because Egypt is in the distance doesn’t mean Jerusalem isn’t nearby”
Imagine being a child in america in this current decade & being black: you get told that you’re not as “ smart “ or “eloquent” as others or that if you’re too eloquent your white or even worse that if your eloquent and athletic you’re a sellout to your own race well what does that have to do with me …a lot.
When I was growing up in the 80s (1984 ) I had a lot of questions about what life would be like but I never got them answered until much later on in life. From the age of about 10-15 I was told that because I was in special education programs just because I didn’t socialize in schools I was dumb well for me school wasn’t a place to get socialization skills it was a place to get academic ones, so much so that I didn’t know that there were things called advanced placement classes until a teacher i had in 11th grade US history had told ME they existed. At the age of 11 I was diagnosed with attention deficit disorder with hyperactivity only to be rediagnosed by teacher as someone who has what is referred to as aspbergers syndrome (en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asperger_syndrome)
When I was in 11th grade (2003) my school made the drastic decision to matriculate which cut the high school but it wasn’t bad for me because I didn’t even like my “classmates” because they didn’t understand that I was socially conservative and they ( let’s just call spades out) were a bunch of loud mouths. It wasn’t until that matriculation that I got to be who I was. I had been nervously excited about the change but knew it needed to happen. In fact I had written a poem about the change and a friend of mine who was a football player at the time said I should enter it into a talent show ( which I then agreed to under the guises that I wouldn’t compete and he show up: I now know never to put a challenge to a football player ),
Then MUCH later in life i found out that not only academically was I ahead of my culture but socially as well. Let me elaborate there are not many black people who willingly admit that they hate the national basketball association accept for me ( the last good decade was the 80s nowadays basketball players are prima donnas) . Now don’t get me wrong I grew up as a basketball “fan” because I lived down the street from the great western forum but I grew out of it just as fast. In 2010 I became a fan of the sport of bull riding (think nba meets the 400 yard dash on a thousand pound animal ) , then in 2011 I became a fan of the national association of stock car auto racing also known as nascar. In that I became a fan of the local hockey team the Los Angeles kings (and through a uncle of mine who happens to be Canadian) got to go to a game ( after my dad went of course) during their run to their first Stanley cup (basically hockey’s version of the nba playoffs: the most games that can be played is 7 , but if you get swept i it’s a bad thing ), just last year I became a fan of formula one ( the international version of nascar where they play the national anthems of the winning driver and manufacturer in the event they’re not the same: ua-cam.com/video/5xgEars7_gA/v-deo.html). As far as my musical taste I grew up listening to “gangsta rap” (Dr. Dre ) and as I grew up I evolved into like …country music (Shania Twain ) on any given day you’ll hear me singing ( kinda badly ) a country music song on two. All of this to say the things that have changed my perception and perspective on life have given me a new license on how to be truly happy with myself regardless of what others think

"You Right" is an R&B song because the tropes that she uses in the song are most aligned with R&B music. The mid-tempo hip-hop oriented beat is cribbed straight from the 90s or early 2000's, and her light feathery vocals almost have an Aaliyah vibe to it. Objectively it's an R&B song

But Nicki isn’t the first to dip her toes in different styles and sounds. And anyone who’s listened to most of Doja’s catalog knows that only a handful of songs sound like anything Nicki would do and that Doja’s influences are varied as hell. Doja is also more of a natural singer and performer than Nicki. Also, yes, Doja has a lot of R&B and R&B-pop songs. She shouldn’t be considered an “R&B artist” though. Give the queen her flowers. They don't want us taking over pop (despite black people literally creating pop sounds), so they pidgeon hole artists like Doja, Lizzo, soon-to-be Chloe into R&B when they do much more and intentionally so. Got us fighting each other when we should be mad at the people creating/deciding these categories for artists. Rather than broadening what pop sounds and looks like, they'd rather broaden what R&B looks and sounds like, honestly KILLING the resurgence of great R&B music like Jazmine, Summer, SZA, and Victoria who should be winning just as much but aren't because reasons listed above...

Her R&B Billboard win last year was a bit ridiculous than this year. Hot Pink only had “Streets”. Otherwise, there was nothing even slightly R&B on that album. At least with Planet Her there is “You Right”, “Alone”, “Been Like This”, “Love To Dream”, and also “Streets” became a hit right before the Planet Her era. So, her R&B wins this year make much more sense than last year. While Doja’s debut album was filled with R&B. Therefore, let’s not act as if R&B and R&B-pop isn’t a substantial part of Doja’s catalog.
However, overall, Planet Her is definitely more pop and rap and hip-hop infused than R&B. A lot of this mess has to do with the industry not wanting to fully embrace black/mixed artists in pop unless they’re completely removed from any type of “urban” sound. While some of it has to do with folks considering Doja too pop or not hood enough to qualify as a “rapper”. It’s all irritating politics. And anyone who’s listened to most of what Doja has put out knows just how varied her sound and style is and how much she excels at so much. Still, Billboard should not have placed her in “Best R&B artist” and “Best R&B album”. That’s for sure.

Doja is a rapper. She is a rapper that is not currently putting on rap but SHE is a rapper. The music is not rap so putting her in another category is ok but not fucking r&b and it doesn't mean she can't rap. There is a person all the stuff they trying to say applies to but it ain't doja it's LIZZO 🤷‍♀️.

R&B artists, the real ones, always getting snubbed and don’t even get properly nominated unless it’s for the BET awards or the Soul Train Awards. And it’s really sad how they’ll work so hard only to be snubbed and pushed the bottom by someone else all the time and it ain’t fair.
Doja does r&b, but her r&b is something under one of the sub categories in the pop genre. Like POP R&B or Alternative Pop. Overall, it’s all MAINLY considered pop no matter how many times you wanna change it. Shoot, Pop Rap if you will. And I love Doja to death and I’m happy for her but this seemed completely unfair to R&B artists who deserve a chance 😭👋🏽 Silk Sonic is considered alternative funk but I honestly wouldn’t even be mad if they won over Doja they just threw her under the R&B category bc she’s black and can sing.
Also people saying she deserved the award because she surpassed Beyoncé’s numbers on Lemonade is extremely corny 💀
