I carry an orange one all the time - I have many other choices, but these are so light and capable you just always have it with you. Mine has cleaned a bunch of trout. Just FYI I have a paramilitary 2 that I carry once a week - to church. I’ll let you do the math on that one.
You’ve got me beat. I only have four of them. They work so well, for the past two months I’ve deliberately carried a larger, “more capable” knife-like a Bugout, or a Manix 2, or a Pyrite-and in that time, I have yet to need the larger knife. The Dragonfly 2 is truly a great knife. I have a standard black with VG-10, an H2 Salt, and two teal handled ones with K390 steel: one is a drop point, the other a Wharncliffe blade. Which do I like best? Yes.
I think the dragonfly is my most carried... I have the Endura, delica and para 3 as well... but the DF is almost always with me. It’s just so damn light and small but an ergonomic masterpiece. Does most anything ya need without being overly built/complicated.
I bought a limited edition “space white” dragonfly for a deployment in Iraq. It was the perfect back pocket knife. And it came out one time as I drew out my wallet...some other lucky soldier got the coolest “food court find” ever! That was ten years ago. Yesterday, I ordered the orange one. I hope this cures my separation anxiety...:)
I've owned four... because they're so damn small and I keep losing them. But I keep replacing them cause they're SO DAMN PERFECT as a easy EDC pocket folder. LOVE the dragonfly in all its forms :D
I love my g10 dragonfly. It was my first knife I really learned to sharpen on. I’ve beat on mine a lot as well and it has held up. Super easy to carry in the 5th pocket or in the waistband with athletic shorts. It’s a great cutter for almost anything.
I saw that teal one on blade hq and put it in my cart for my wife. I then proceeded to forget to order it and boom they are GONE! who'd have thought a teal knife would sell out so quick!!! Great collection man, tiny knives RULE🤙🏽 👁mini grip👀
I have one of the teal ones, and I like it more than I thought i would. Typically I carry my victorinox Cadet in the fifth pocket but the dragonfly does work well in that pocket too
I have the standard vg10 dragonfly and I liked it as a backup blade, but once I saw it released with the k390, I bought one up and it’s my normal stuff edc blade. Love it in k390. For hunting deer, elk ..., I have a native 5 in S35VN and a Para M 2 in S30V, and they are great for having in my and my wife’s binocular harnesses for quartering and dress game out. The PM2 I wish was in a S35VN or better. After cutting hide and shank joints on 2 elk the S30V starts to dull. I pre ordered a stretch 2 straight spine in k390 and I think this will be a primary hunting blade. I’m becoming a big fan of the k390 steel, glad spyderco is starting to release a bunch of models in the steel now. Thanks for sharing your dragonfly collection!
This is my favorite knife to sharpen. I have other models that I might prefer when it comes to carry (my shamans are my all time favorite knives) but the dragonfly is a great “user” knife if you’re a freehand sharpener. The blade is small, the ergonomics are awesome, the choil lets you get right up in there for maximum control and oh man…just typing this makes me wanna go sharpen a dragonfly. The k390 model is fun but the vg10 model will take a hair-exploding edge in about 10 minutes…it’s incredibly satisfying.
@@michaelgeorge5197 Honestly, I mostly just use a sharpal 62n (they’re cheap…something like $40-50 on amazon) and a strop or two…that’s it. The great thing about the dragonfly is the edge is small so you can tell pretty quickly how well things are going. It doesn’t take much experience to just make things better…and that’s what practical, everyday sharpening is mostly about anyway.
I just bought one of these. I was looking for a light weight good slicer to pair with my Victorinox Classic and little Olight flashlight. This is so highly rated I have to try it. If I love it the way many seem to, I'll buy another one for my nephew for Xmas.
Hey what’s up HD! Thanks so much for watching my friend. It’s a great knife that’s for sure. Tiny, but I love it. For a budget alternative there’s also the Byrd Robin 2 at less then half the price if someone wanted to take the general design/size for a test drive.
I love my Dragonfly. I had a custom dyed red VG-10 version that I replaced with the teal S30V version. It's small, but it's easily one of my favorite knives.
This is an amazing little knife, I can only agree with all that you said there. I got a wharncliffe version weeks ago and I love it even more. So handy and practical, wish it was more of a fidget type of knife and a little cheaper, I mean come on I find delica 4 models for cheaper, but indeed an excellent must have little one.
DragonFly 2 is definitely a bucket list knife. I’d go with the Tiffany blue or the grey. It’d be perfect to take where you’re not allowed but it’s not illegal to. Great video loved it.
Thanks, Bunzo! You know what’s crazy, the one in teal, or “Tiffany blue”, I learned that they only made 500 of them and people are selling them on eBay for like $175. Total rip off. Same thing with the gray one which was a sprint run. Crazy prices on the secondary market.
I was lucky to get a Dragonfly in CPM20V. It really is an outstanding slicer and disappears in my pocket. I really like it. I’m about to get a UKPK for similar reasons. I would also get one of the Lil Natives in Magnacut sometime. Great video. Great knives.
Hey Rodney! I’ve heard that from a lot of people, that they’re suprised by the ethos on such a small knife. It’s still not going to be for everyone but it’s pretty darn good. Cheers!
I think the k390 is by far the best model. Its not stainless but its very hard, and tough for a hard steel. They runnit at 64 or 65 hardness, and it holds an edge forever. Some people hate non stainless, but i think those are best steels. K390 looks awesome as it tarnishes. Gotta sharpen on diamond, but its worth it
I don't use it a whole lot but carry it every day without hassle. You just don't notice it. The design is so cool, it looks good folded and when in use. It just makes sense.
I love Spyderco's smaller knives. I've got a couple of their slipjoints and they're just as great as their full size knives. Favorite fifth pocket knife is the Spyderco Squeak. I have a Cricket coming so that might change here soon. Lol
Nice collection, I have a purple DF which I believe is a sprint run about 6 yr. ago and a orange one that I Rit dye racing red , which looks real nice now , kinda like a cherry color , I seem to carry it more now since I made it my own color , Thanks for a awesome video
Hey Susan!! I remember the purple one from years ago. That’s so awesome that you got that one! From the pictures I’ve seen it looks just gorgeous. What’s funny is I was just thinking that I’d like a red one, lol. I’ve seen someone who Rit dyed one red and it looked amazing. I may have to try my hand at trying to make a red one!
@@GearedTowardGear1 You will like the red one , for some odd reason dying it yourself makes even more to like the DF and the feeling of a color that wasn't mass produced is a great feeling to edc it , Thanks again
Hey thanks for watching! Same here brother. The HAP40 & Pakkawood is the only other DF2 that I want. They’re available for pre-order on KnifeCenter which I’m hoping means they have another batch coming. I wanted the burnt orange FRN HAP40 but those are long gone unfortunately.
Just got mine. Its great, but not $70 great. I'm sure there are plenty of CRKTS and Kershaws out there that can give this thing a run for the money for half the price. I like it though, not complaining..just stating facts. Also, a secondary knife is funny..most people would use their primary knife to only cut the loose threads on their socks🤣
I've a Ladybug 3 Salt in transit to me, I hope och think it will suit fine as a keychain/fifth pocket knife. Love the idea with H1 steel, you can just do whatever you want with it and forget about it and pick it up a couple of years later and not a single stain or any rust.
I do not own one but would definitely be one I would check out typically my small back up blade is my victorinox executive very handy little blade keep up the great work Sean
Hey, thanks so much for watching! The Kershaw Shuffle is a great option for a 5th pocket knife. They’re super popular. I know I’ve got one lying around somewhere.
Hey, thanks so much for watching! I haven’t tried one yet but I’ve heard great things about the RUK! The Ladybug is a great keychain option, I like that. And the PM2 is a classic of course. Sounds like you have an awesome EDC!
Thanks for the video mate, I love the dragonfly’s as well. You should really get your hands on one of the G10 models, I think it makes it feel like a much more substantial knife. Keep up the good work! 👌
When I first saw Spider's knives whitch is couple of decades ago, I think "what the hack this ugly things are?" because back than I was a SAK and classic folder guy. and dragonfly is feel TOO SMALL to me. but just a half year's ago, someone gave me a chance to grab he's dragonfly, I am just fall in love this little boy. now I have K390 one. I love its scale color too.
I purchased the model in K390 (C28FP2K390) a few weeks ago. First of, I wasn't really aware of how small it was. Second, I didn't realize how THIN it was. However... the more I play with it, the more I LIKE it (that's what SHE said)!! The one that I really wanted had escaped me through a bidding war in eBay. It was the model with the black blade with the olive drab scales. I wanted it so bad... but sadly not bad enough... as it's final bid was $200!! I am still pissed. The closest one that I really like had the black blade... but with the PINK scales. If I can find different scales, then I will but THAT one. Ultimately, for something that I initially didn't care for has somehow GROWN on me, probably because I am a fan of Spyderco from waaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy back when!! My first three models were the Police Model (full stainless), the Marine model, and the purple Ladybug (for my wife) that I bought back in the 80's! Yep... good times!!!
I ordered the Spyderco Dragonfly 2 in blue FRN and K390 steel, I will use it as a backup knife and a neck knife for a leather neck carry sheath I will make for it with dragonfly stamp on the sheath I will sell some of these sheaths on ebay in November 2020 if anyone is interested. I prefer a larger folding knife such as the Endura 4 or the Spyderco Police that I want in the blue handle and K390 steel so I am waiting for that one to come out. Besides a larger folder I like small fixed blades such as these LT Wright knives Frontier Valley , Lil Muk , Patriot , and Next Gen are great LT Wright small fixed blades the other one I like is the Lionsteel B35 fixed blade with my custom Armatus kydex sheath or the factory leather sheath .
I love the Dragonfly 2. Lost my original orange one, still bummed about it. I have the zome one now. I like it also but the spydie hole is so sharp that I don't use it much, don't like how it tries to tear up my finger. Really wanted to try the teal but couldn't grab one. Now they're going to ridiculous prices. Great video.
Thanks, Jade! That sucks that you lost your orange one. I’ve seen some pretty awesome Rit dye jobs on the Zome Green version. I saw one in red that looked amazing.
Is the back lock very stiff? I have the chaparral and it is straight up painful to press with the amount of force it needs to close on such a thin stock
Weird I’ve never owned Or even handled a Spyderco knife But had a dream about one last night? Of course now I g2 pick one up but I’m torn between an orange dragonfly, a camo dragonfly or a para 3? I would get the para 3 but the one I’m looking at is custom $255. Idk if I want to spend that much on one. I like the camo pattern for the dragonfly but bright orange would be harder to misplace if I set it down Somewhere. Idk? I own a lot of knives but 99.9% are high carbon steel. Be nice to have something I would not have to worry about rusting that I could use to field dress or even just slicing up apples. I like how you say yours went through the washer and dryer and came out fine. That probably sold me.
I recently bought a Lil' native (comp. lock) and been using it for EDC but I just can't let the dragonfly off my pocket. It's just thin, lightweight and perfect for light cutting tasks..
Hello Geared Toward Gear:) I have a question...I just purchased a salt dragonfly. Is the texture/ feel of the scales any different from the non salt dragonfly? I have a byrd meadowlark and it's very hard, plastic-like. This dragonfly is somewhat like fabric/paper like. Just curious. Thank you kindly, hope to hear from you or anyone else :)))
Seems like a pretty good knife. I really like the blue grey but the way sprint runs go I probably wouldn't pay the price but were probably only available for less than 5 minutes. Really like the wire clip that is a great choice for that knife. How does it feel if not chocked up in your hand? Reason I ask is I also wear xl gloves and figured my pinkie would be holding nothing. The 2 knives I am carrying in my fifth pocket is the Black fox Bean gen 2 and the other one is the S&W Metalworks Go2. Depending on how you answer the grip question will determine if I consider them. I may have been selling them short. Pun intended.
I love a good pun, Rick! Lol. Not choked up I get 3 fingers on it with my pinky hanging off. But it feels crazy secure in my hand. If you can comfortably hold a Black Fox Bean I think you’d find the Dragonfly 2 perfectly comfortable.
@@GearedTowardGear1 That would be my choice for a 5th pocket knife. It might be too big, but dammit I would make it fit. Lol. It's too damn pretty. Keep up the Spyderco addiction. Try to ween yourse.....Oh bugger it. Indulge it. It's Spyderco. You can't go wrong.
Hey thanks so much for watching! I’ve only handled a couple Byrd knives and have not tried the Robin, but I think the FRN Robin 2 would be a great budget alternative to the Drafonfly 2. It’ll perform a bit differently having a cheaper steel but for most people (including myself) it’ll get the job done, just may need to sharpen it a little more often. Maybe I’ll pick one up and do a comparison video between them.
@@GearedTowardGear1 I've never owned a Robin myself but, I always imagined it was identical in construction to the Meadowlarks I've owned, if so I'm sure it'll be a decent budget alternative. I wish Byrd would use more CTS-HXP like they do in the Crow/Raven lines though
@@GearedTowardGear1 I have the Bryd Robin 2 and the only difference I can see is the blade steel is 8cr13mov, and it has a flat pocket clip instead of a wire one. I think I paid around 30 dollars for it. Very handy size.
That’s a tough one, there’s so many great ones to choose from. I tend to prefer stainless steels over tool steels, with S90V probably being my all-around favorite.
Lol! Hey Wiggle, great to hear from you. It definitely is an addiction. I call it a passion, which is what addicts say to justify their addiction, haha. Thanks for watching!
I don't see the point of a 5th-pocket knife unless it's serrated; because sometimes serrations are helpful, but not on your primary blade. So maybe the Dragonfly SpyderEdge would be worth having, if I could get one on speciall offer. But if my main blade was serrated (which it never is), then I'd go for a plain-edge 5th-pocket knife. In which case, the mini Sheepdog would get my vote. It's so much more knife in a small package than the Dragonfly: more useful blade, better materials, better fidget-factor, better value for money.
I feel like it's a bit overpriced. That being said, I'm so glad I overpaid for it. Such an ideal size and design for my suburban, domestic lifestyle. Perfect for 90% of my everyday tasks. BTW: How'd you get your Mini Grip to drop like that?
Hey what’s up man, thanks so much for watching! I definitely think an argument can be made for them being overpriced. The standard VG10 version should be like $45-$50 instead of $65. But you’re right, being a suburbanite myself this think gets the job done most of the time. The Mini Grip question is a combination of a couple things: one is that it’s probably 7 years old, so it’s had a lot of time to break in. Also I loosened the pivot slightly and added loc tite to make it a bit smoother. Loose enough that it’s smooth but not so loose that it causes blade play. I have 2 other mini grips that are newer and they are not drop shut smooth like that.
I carry an orange one all the time - I have many other choices, but these are so light and capable you just always have it with you. Mine has cleaned a bunch of trout. Just FYI I have a paramilitary 2 that I carry once a week - to church. I’ll let you do the math on that one.

I think you need a couple more brother!! Maybe the wharnie? Or the serrated? I just don't think you have enough 🤣🤣
Very nice collection! Love them.
My go to 5th pocket is the manly wasp.
But I've considered a dragonfly myself.
Great review Sean. I think I'm gonna have to pick one of these up at some point 😁👌
Hey there!! Thanks for watching! I think it’s worth giving a try for sure.
My dream Spyderco...💗💗💗
They’re pretty nice that’s for sure. Thanks for watching!
I got the orange one!
Mine is coming today 10/15/23.
I love my little dragonfly but living in the uk locking knives are a no no , so I’ve converted mine to a slipjoint so I can edc it legally.
Awesome!
One of my most carried.
Right on!!
🤣 I’ve got 6 of them too
Just a brilliant little knife
The Dragonfly is one of my favorites, I have the three generations of the Dragonfly in VG-1, AUS 8 and VG 10.
Excellent review.
That’s so awesome, Barry! Very cool to have that much Dragonfly 2 history.
I recently bought a Lil' native (comp. lock) and been using it for EDC but I just can't let the dragonfly off my pocket. It's just thin, lightweight and perfect for light cutting tasks..
Very well said!
Hello Geared Toward Gear:)
I have a question...I just purchased a salt dragonfly. Is the texture/ feel of the scales any different from the non salt dragonfly? I have a byrd meadowlark and it's very hard, plastic-like. This dragonfly is somewhat like fabric/paper like. Just curious. Thank you kindly, hope to hear from you or anyone else :)))
the only small knife that rivals the Dragonfly 2 is the Fallkniven U2, but only if you don't require a clip.
I have zip-189. I hear they are now discontinued. Is this true?
Cool
Im sold
Have you seen the WESN Allman? It is on kickstarter.
I have. That thing looks awesome!
@@GearedTowardGear1
That would be my choice for a 5th pocket knife. It might be too big, but dammit I would make it fit. Lol. It's too damn pretty. Keep up the Spyderco addiction. Try to ween yourse.....Oh bugger it. Indulge it. It's Spyderco. You can't go wrong.
Will 550 paracord fit through the lanyard hole??
Yes
Native 5 salt
Great video! Since you enjoy the Dragonfly so much, I have to ask, do you also like the Byrd Robin?
What is your favorite steel from spiderco?
That’s a tough one, there’s so many great ones to choose from. I tend to prefer stainless steels over tool steels, with S90V probably being my all-around favorite.
Hey Sean. Loved the video but I am concerned about your addiction, hahaha. Not a bad addiction to have though.
Why aren't they deep carry
@@GearedTowardGear1 Thanks for the reply. I'll just keep working on mine. The action is great but I saw yours and thought, "I want mine to do that!"
In the UK the price is ridiculous. I ruined the tip on mine and want another but I can’t stomach the price.
Dude you are trying real hard to get me to buy one of these arent you...lol!?!?!
Haha. They’re fantastic. Unfortunately they don’t make one in red, which I really would like, lol. Thanks for watching brother!
These are like $140 AUD for me 😩
Yikes!!
170-200 CAD to buy aftermarket for me
@@GearedTowardGear1 is it worth it? I have the lil native, mcbee, and the smock. I want that df2 s30v
Here in England, we have a choice,, either black, or not,, 🙄🙄🙄
