Thanks for the report above, Bloomberg Television. The just concluded State visit above of May 2024 to the USA by President William Ruto, is very interesting in relation to Kenya's history of the last 32 years. William Ruto (President of Kenya since 13th September 2022), rose to prominence at Kenya's elections of 1992, via what was known back then as "Youth for KANU '92." The ruling party in Kenya at the time was KANU, and "Youth for KANU '92" was geared towards getting Kenyan youth, at the time, to vote for KANU in big numbers at Kenya's 1992 elections. KANU won Kenya's 1992 elections, after which William Ruto became low profile, that is, until Kenya's 1997 elections, when William Ruto got elected Member of Parliament for Eldoret North.
Uhuru Kenyatta was President of Kenya from 2013 to 2022. Uhuru Kenyatta's father, Jomo Kenyatta, was Prime Minister of Kenya from 1963 to 1964, and President of Kenya from 1964 to 1978. Uhuru Kenyatta stood for President at Kenya's 2002 elections, and lost to Mwai Kibaki. William Ruto was a key supporter of Uhuru Kenyatta's presidential bid of 2002, and when Uhuru Kenyatta conceded defeat to Mwai Kibaki on Sunday, 29th December 2002, none other than William Ruto was standing by Uhuru Kenyatta's side. At the time, both Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto were in the Kenya's then ruling party, KANU, which then became Kenya's official opposition party, upon Mwai Kibaki and the National Rainbow Coalition (NARC), being formally sworn into power on Monday, 30th December 2002.
Interestingly too, both Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto, were Cabinet Ministers in the said KANU Government that exited power in Kenya on 30th December 2002. As indicated above, both the Kenyatta name and the Kenyatta family, are well known in Kenya, courtesy of Kenya's 1st President, Jomo Kenyatta, and Kenya's 4th President, Uhuru Kenyatta.
In his own right, however, Uhuru Kenyatta, in a personal capacity, rose to national prominence in Kenya in the year 2001 upon Kenya's 2nd President, Daniel T. arap Moi, appointing Uhuru Kenyatta as a Nominated Member of Parliament, as well as Kenya's Minister for Local Government, both positions that Uhuru Kenyatta held until the NARC Government came to power in Kenya on 30th December 2002. In his own right, too, Uhuru Kenyatta was elected Member of Parliament for Gatundu South at Kenya's 2002 elections, consequent upon which Uhuru Kenyatta became the official leader of the opposition in Kenya after the 2002 elections, owing to the fact that NARC emerged with majority seats in the Kenya Parliament after the 2002 elections, with KANU emerging with the second largest number of seats in the Kenya Parliament after the 2002 elections.
On his part, William Ruto, was appointed a Kenya Cabinet Minister, also by Kenya's 2nd President, Daniel T. arap Moi, around September 2002, at the height of campaigns in Kenya for the 2002 elections. Not many Kenyans now, remember that both Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto were Cabinet Ministers in the KANU regime that exited power in Kenya on 30th December 2002.
Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto remained close allies even after KANU lost to NARC at Kenya's 2002 elections. However, there was a referendum on a new Kenyan constitution in 2005, at which point, Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto split ways, with Uhuru Kenyatta backing the "Yes to a new Kenyan constitution" camp, and William Ruto backing the "No to a new Kenyan constitution" camp. William Ruto's camp, won at Kenya's 2005 constitutional referendum.
Soon thereafter, were Kenya's 2007 elections. Uhuru Kenyatta and KANU threw their support behind Mwai Kibaki's 2007 reelection bid as Kenyan President. Mwai Kibaki sought reelection as Kenya's President at Kenya's 2007 elections, via a coalition of political parties known as the Party of National Unity (PNU), while William Ruto altogether defected from KANU to a newly formed party known as the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).
The leading presidential candidates at Kenya's 2007 elections were Mwai Kibaki of PNU, and Raila Odinga of ODM. Mwai Kibaki was declared winner of Kenya's 2007 presidential election on Sunday evening, 29th December 2007, by what was then known as the Electoral Commission of Kenya (ECK). ODM bitterly disputed the ECK verdict, and what followed is a dark chapter in Kenyan history, where violence erupted across Kenya, violence related to 2007 election dispute, what is referred to as Kenya's Post Election Violence (PEV) of 2007 and 2008. At the time, Civil War in Kenya, even looked like a possibility.
Dr. Kofi Annan, Secretary-General of the United Nations from 1997 to 2006, brokered an agreement between PNU and ODM in February 2008, what is known as the National Accord, out of which was constituted a Coalition Government between PNU, ODM, and a third political party at Kenya's 2007 elections, known as the Orange Democratic Movement - Kenya (ODM-Kenya). Kenya's Coalition Government was in place from 2008 to 2013, with Mwai Kibaki of PNU as President, Raila Odinga of ODM as Prime Minister, and Kalonzo Musyoka of ODM-Kenya as Vice President. In the Coalition Government that was constituted in February 2008, Uhuru Kenyatta of PNU was appointed one of two Deputy Prime Ministers, as well as Minister for Local Government, while William Ruto was appointed Minister for Agriculture. Uhuru Kenyatta later changed ministerial dockets twice, that is, to Trade Minister, and then to Finance Minister.
The International Criminal Court (ICC) based in the Netherlands, then brought charges against six Kenyans, it regarded as key behind Kenya's Post Election Violence (PEV) of 2007 and 2008, the six being Kenya's then Head of the Civil Service, Francis Muthaura, ODM's then Chairman, Henry Kosgey, radio broadcaster, Joshua Sang, Kenya's then Commissioner of Police, Maj. Gen. Mohamed Ali, Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto. Between 2011 and 2016, charges of crimes against humanity, were dropped against all six men, and there are no current pending cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC), regarding Kenya's Post Election Violence (PEV) of 2007 and 2008.
At Kenya's 2013 elections, the two main competitors were coalitions, namely, the Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD), and The National Alliance (TNA). Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka, both now of CORD, were running mates for President and Deputy President, respectively, while Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto, both now of TNA, were running mates for President and Deputy President, respectively. Prior to Kenya's 2013 elections, both Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto, as mentioned above, had pending cases of crimes against humanity at the International Criminal Court (ICC), though the High of Court cleared both men to stand for President and Deputy President at Kenya's 2013 elections.
Johnny Carson, who at the time of Kenya's 2013 elections, was a US Assistant Secretary of State, stated that "Choices have Consequences," which was taken to mean that Kenyans, at the time, should elect Raila Odinga and Kalonzo Musyoka as President and Deputy President, rather than Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto as President and Deputy President, otherwise there would be "consequences."
And then, after Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto were sworn into office on 9th April 2013 as Kenyan President and Kenyan Deputy President, respectively, local Kenyan media and international media, created the impression that both Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto stood the possibility of being found guilty at the International Criminal Court (ICC), at the time, for their pending cases of crimes against humanity. In 1989, during the US presidency of George H.W. Bush, Panama was invaded by American marines, with Panama's then President, Gen. Manuel Noreiga, being apprehended by the American marines, and taken back to the USA, where he was detained, before being relocated to France, where he was similarly incarcerated for several years. Local Kenyan media and international media, back in 2013, created the impression that something similar to what happened to Gen. Manuel Noreiga of Panama in 1989, would happen to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto, regarding their then pending cases at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
Nothing of the sort happened, the charges against both Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto at the ICC were dropped, in 2014 and 2016, respectively, Uhuru Kenyatta served two terms as Kenya's President from 2013 to 2022, William Ruto served two terms as Kenya's Deputy President from 2013 and 2022, William Ruto got elected Kenya's 5th President on 9th August 2022, being formally sworn-in as Kenya's 5th President on 13th September 2022.
President William Ruto and Kenya's current 1st lady Rachael Ruto, have already been hosted once at the White House, USA, since William Ruto was sworn in as Kenya's 5th President on 13th September 2022, and now in May 2024, President William Ruto and 1st lady Rachel Ruto, got 1st class treatment at the White House, USA, from US President Joe Biden and US 1st lady Dr. Jill Biden, in the first State visit by a Kenyan President to the USA, since that of Kenya's 3rd President, Mwai Kibaki, of October 2003. The State visit by President William Ruto of May 2024 too, is the first State visit to the USA by an African Head of State in sixteen years.
Very interesting, for two men, Uhuru Kenyatta and William Ruto, that is, who it was made appear, would be "locked up" by the International Criminal Court (ICC), on or after the year 2013.
Regards, Michael M. Kamau, Nairobi, Kenya, East Africa, 25th May 2024.
