  • Every show, whether a concert, play, musical, cabaret, or standup, has to establish the "rules" for its audience to follow. Here's why it is important for writers and performers to heed the warning: TRAIN YOUR AUDIENCE!
As I write my own musical, I dissect how a show ignored this advice to its detriment, and list three successful musicals that exemplify this technique: Book of Mormon, Les Miserables, and A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum.

Excellent! I love how you bring it back to your musical. It'll be interesting to see how you do that with your story. Well done again Scott.

So clever. I never think about the audiences role in theatre. I remember watching cruel intentions and a lady next to us was trying to sing along to every song because it is a jukebox musical. However the lyrics had and the timing of the music had changed slightly to fit the story, but annoyingly this lady thought it was a sing along.

I hear your pain, Hannah. At least a show like Sing-Along Sound of Music states its intention in the title - the audience is expected to participate. Thanks for watching again.
