If I hadn't just bought a OnePlus 8 on Prime Day, this would be my upgrade. Really nice and I'm happy to see MediaTek finally competing for the high end.
It just seems that one plus knows the most about the $400-500 phones the most because the cheaper nords are terrible and the flagships are okay at best. Base nord was the highlight of oneplus last year (8 pro and 8t weren't too bad either), and nord 2 is the highlight this year.
When I look at the prices and offerings for subscriptions in the US, I sometimes think that they are robbing customers. In some countries you can get now true no cap unlimited internet and voice + roaming for 10 - 11 EUR / month.
I know this is an old review but this misconception NEEDS to be cleared. TL;DR: people don't ever realize using the monochrome camera but the data from the monochrome is always used when you see the final image from the main camera. The 2mp monochrome camera by its name captures only in black and white. The black and white data is then combined with the main camera's data. This improves the dynamic range of the final image. People expect it to function as it is, but in reality, it is a component to support the final images of the main camera. Furthermore, it also helps with background separation in portrait mode, because it uses the 2mp camera's contrast data to calculate the line between human subject and background more accurately. Other phones might not need the monochrome sensor because the engineers of those other phones have allocated more resources to optimize image processing algorithms. This means they have worked a lot more on how the captured data is processed and translated into the device screen's color space. There is no consensus on which is better - it is ultimately a balancing act of the R&D budget. Use more money to program a better image processing algorithm or use more money to program how to combine different camera's data. So, less of a total gimmick and more of a necessary evil.
A punch hole in the screen for the camera is a huge compromise and not a good one. It makes me sad, that I only have one single brand to choose from when it comes to smartphones. And that's Sony. The only brand that's smart and do practical design choices.
