When patients make you facepalm

- I am going to share my experiences as a practitioner (optometrist), there have been some very facepalming moments that I cannot forget, and I would love to share them with you.
I hope you learn something while you watch!
Big shout out to IG @forjaeson for helping me shoot this short! We had a tonne of fun
I’ve said the “too clear” thing. It was an almost overwhelming sharpness. I didn’t ask for a refund of course, it was just weird at first. It’s one of those odd things, when you’re used to things being ‘wrong’ you don’t know what ‘right’ is supposed to feel like. So if it feels different to our normal, it’s weird lol.
Also- the “I can’t see without my glasses” thing… when you’re told that you should only need them for certain things like the cinema etc, and you find that you’re needing to use them all day but they keep telling you that nothing has changed, that’s why we say our eyes have gotten worse. Because we didn’t need them all the time a year ago, but now we feel like we do. But we’re still being told me shouldn’t need to wear them all the time.
Man I got my first pair of glasses 2 weeks ago and I really struggled with the 'too clear' thing for the first 4-5 days.
Everything was not only so clear but had so much contrast, it felt like my brain tried to focus on every grain, speck of dust and bread crumb at once. I genuinely feel like my brain didn't know what to do with all this information and 'visual data'.
@@stephaniehoughton89 Isn't that just getting used to not having blurry vision? If your rx hasn't changed, you should still only "need them" for certain tasks but now you can enjoy life with less blurriness. That's life with a medium low rx
@@cornela1 Yes, one trouble I had was that the kitchen suddenly became a lot dirtier than before.
When I first got glasses in 4th grade, I thought that same thing with “too clear” but didn’t say it out loud. It is an overstimulation of being able to gather information from further than a couple feet in front of yourself. The fascination of it gradually overtakes the overwhelming part as you get used to being able to see things further away
When I received a new pair of glasses while in high school after not updating the prescription for years (and not actually wearing anything), I experienced the "too clear" thing. Suddenly, I could see individual leaves on trees, not just a green blob like in a Charlie Brown cartoon. I could also read road signs from a further distance than just right next to them. That last part was the most important because I was learning to drive (and my father observed I couldn't see very well while he was riding with me).
"why can't I see without my glasses" I get that ALL the time! haha
🤣 this is the bane of my existence
@@AntonioTheOptom Hey , can you talk a rare condition known as Usher Syndrome? You see I was diagnosed four ago with this syndrome which is type II. I was born with moderate hearing loss and wore and still wear hearings and have a great sight. Until, in my late adolecence I noticed symptoms of bad dark adaptation., astigmatism, distortion and reduced visual field and it is seem it progressively getting worse. I am those rare breeds of " deafblind" due i am legally blind and have hearing loss. So , I use both glasses and hearing aids. I want this syndrome to be little more known because it is seem it have no cure but treatment. Can you do a video about it?
"Is it possible to prevent myopia, " makes alll ODs FACE PALM .
My optometrist as a kid was in a mall and across from it was a Hot Topic store. My eyes got worse quickly and every year I'd get new glasses and every year that first look at Hot Topic with newly clear vision was really something.
Hahaha! These stories were so funny. The one about which one is better, 1 or 2? was probably me. I could not tell which one was clearer/better and kept asking my optom to show me the other one and changing my answer
😂 oh no!
Yeah, those astigmatism tests aren't so fun as a patient. Yes, sure the black dots are maybe slightly sharper now, maybe, but also the whole shape looks more distorted now, and some of the circles don't look as round, even though they're crisp and well defined. So which one is better? Yeah, good question :D
I think optometrists also generally do a poor job of explaining to not dwell, but go with your instinct. To the patient it seems very important to "get it right", so the prescription will be accurate, and I think that people would relax about it more If they were explained that hardly being able to tell the difference is a good thing, and that you're probably accurate enough at that point that a "wrong" answer won't matter.
Agree !!
I have one eye that is 15 and the other that is -5.75 (thanks IIH and optic nerve blow out that looks like mt. Vesuvius scarring that caused this) so I literally just say... "ummm, that's to the left? Ummm... put that on hold? This one is drunk vision. This is slightly blurred. Go back again, yah... can't tell the difference. Nope, one is drunk to the left the other is high to the right. Yeah, now it's drunk in the up direction. Oh! 1 is single dots... Try those again. Yeah number 1. Wait, is this supposed to be better because I'm seeing 13 dots not 7. HOLY CRUD I CAN SEE ALL THE PIXELS!!! How did you get here from my bad commentary!?!"
TL;DL: my optho is amazing. Been seeing him every 6 month for the last 6 years and he is the best.
@@LadyBovine I just get worried that even though I can’t tell the difference, it’s because BOTH optioned or all of them are equally bad and nothing looks clear enough to want any of the options. Eh, after nearly 10 years of appointments like that and learning how to speak to others better than when I was a kid helps to just explain better and choose 1 or 2 lol
Had a patient that called complaining he couldn't see anymore. After reviewing his file, it was revealed he hadn't updated his glasses in awhile. His complaint over the phone was "the medicine ran out of his glasses". Facepalm moment!
Tbh I thought glasses had medicine in them until I got mine 2 months ago and I’m turning 20 😅
@@clickbiat haha that's awesome!
7:00 I'm sorry, but this description is perfectly valid lol. I had an eye exam last month (I'd never had one before), and when asked to choose between the images this is exactly how I felt. when shown #1, that one felt sharp, when shown #2, now that one felt clearer, then when I went back to #1 that one felt clearer now. Sorry if that makes optometrists scratch their heads, but it is what it is.
I've recognize "too clear" in myself when I was younger, I was always amazed and happy though to see with the clarity I should. During my teens the change over the course of a year was always pretty noticeable.
I always tell people I can't hear without my glasses. I swear I can understand people when they speak better when I'm wearing my glasses. A friend of mine says that we all unconsciously take some cues from lip movements, not full-on lip reading, just a little extra data.
This is probably the reason some people (that'd be me) really hate trying to watch something on TV when the audio and video aren't in sync.
maybe you have hearing problems of some sort and your eyes help to correct that weakness? I'm no doctor and it's just one random thought thrown out there because I realised my other senses and even my brain naturally tried to overcompensate for weaker eyesight when I was young. E.g. trying to see patterns in how people move to identify them across large distances without "really" seeing them.
That's why I hate talking on the phone.
@@daevo4905 no please I have the problem op just talked about not hearing properly unless I read their lips and I don’t want to believe that I have hearing problems because I just recently started wearing glasses and the lens are THICK, I can’t be both deaf and blind.
@@clickbiat I respect the way you phrased that, made me chuckle. I hope it's nothing but wouldn't hurt to get it checked out regardless!
The "one is sharper, two is clearer" is not quite something I've done... but I've definitely replied, "I don't know, toss a coin, they both look the same."
that is fine. You could be on the very edge of either correction. (1 is slightly not under and 2 is slightly over the perfect value)
If you do the test in the morning you might get a slightly different prescription then in the evening.
An optometrist still tries to do his best - but if two option are inconclusive, well: then look how that value interacts with other aspects.
My wife for example has a prescription you technically can not manufacture, because the glass thickness would have to go negative.
Sometimes you just can't tell which is better, it happens to me all the time when I am tested, you need to check it on more distances, more contrast scenarios etc...but you have no time for that, they just want anwer and then they are surpried that you don't know, but when you look at computer screen which is like 50 cm far away, you will see the difference, they should test it more properly, when I was kid, they tested it better than today, you had more distances, more colors, more light conditions, now they just put your head to refractometr and then they do some fast test with test lenses and that's all, it's totaly wrong.
That doctor part is hilarious I swear
😂😂
I have heard that people who work in the medical field make the worst patients. I've even had people in the field tell me that they are the worst patients. lol
To be fair, with astigmatism it's sometimes ambiguous which one's better cause neither is 100% clear. People without astigmatism wouldn't understand...
Also, I prefer comfortable vision over the razor sharp vision I'd get with a little overcorrection, so I might say 2 is sharper but 1 is better.
Good point🤔
Hadn't thought about it like that.
Exactly. As a result, my glasses ended up making negligible improvement. It’s super annoying.
I have astigmatism and I like super sharp focus for reading large amounts of fine print quickly. Some optometrists don’t know how to prescribe or test for astigmatism. I have an optometrist with decades of experience who is a gem.
@@franceslock1662 I Was told some optometrists don't get enough college or continue education so they just know the basics...Enough to get by I guess
This right here.
My eyes burn just thinking about washing my contacts with tooth paste!
I know right! 😂 when I heard that I was speechless
“are these going to make me fat?” 😂 😂 😂
😂
I kinda understand that "1, 2, 3, 4" guy. Like, sometimes one image is sharp and clear but the other one is easier on the eyes. And it's even more difficult if the result changes when you blink, lol. The worst thing is when the practitioner doesn't want to listen to your explanations: "no, no, just tell me "yes" or "no". I ended up with the glasses that not just gave me a huge headache but I couldn't read because I saw double lines.
LMAO that vision 1 sharper vision 2 clearer killed me 🤣🤣🤣
I may have said that in the vision check. Sometimes I can't tell which one is better and just mumble something similar to both. 😥
OMG, the sungazing one had me dying 🤣
It's too clear , can i get refund just happened to me 🤣🤣🤣
Are this going to make me fat got me🤣
I can sorta understand #1, since getting a new prescription always makes everything look just that little bit different, and some people just can’t quite process that well. Of course, it only takes a couple hours to adjust, at least in my experience.
In my experience the problem with glasses that are "too clear" is that they make the floor look "deep" and I feel like I might trip especially on stairs
That was hysterical. I didn’t want it to end.
These are all priceless! makes me laugh. Thank for sharing.
😂 thanks for enjoying
Before I found my current optometrist I had two lazy optometrists, one even got the receptionist to finish because she ran out of time. Those glasses were useless and I never went back. If you dared to complain about the glasses you got and ask for another team member to do the prescribing, they were rude and gave substandard service, wasting your money and time. My current optometrist has decades of experience and is the best in my region. When he retires I don’t know what I’ll do.
I have such experiences from those big chains like grand optical, they test it very fast and not that precise. When I was kid, smaller optometrists were doing much more tests and it took much more time and new glasses were always perfect, now when I visit grand optical or similar global chains, new glasses are sometimes even worse than old glasses, so I also will not return. The best si to visit actual eye doctor, not optometirst. Eye doctor has right to use special drops to make your pupils bigger and then testing is more precise. Optometrist is not actual doctor and he has no right to do such things. Also, optometirst mainly wants you to buy a new glasses there, not properly test your eyes. You can order glasses online now (you can even send your frame and they will change your lenses) and I am very satisfied by quality and price of those lenses from online optics, so I am thinking about buying testing lenses and test my eyes by myself and then order final lenses online. I know, it's not that easy to test your eyes, but it's not even some nuclear physics, when you have technical school and you have experiences with other optical things like camera lenses, binoculars etc...it's not that hard to understand all those cylinders and axises and plus and minus dioptries etc....but problem is you can't just go and buy test lenses in some shop, you have to order it from alliexperes, local shops with such equipment mostly sell only to actual doctors or optometrists.
lmao the sun gazing stoner hahah
Real case... believe it or not 😂
"Clear as a bell" 😆
🤣🤣🤣 it’s either blind as a bat or clear as a bell there is no in between
After seeing this... now I understand why my optometrist dosen't mind me and my weird questions. Because I'm just curious about my test results and not harmful... @_@ OMG.
On a slow day, a person like you might even be fun.
Change perspective: Asking question means you respect his expertise, so on a slow day, what you do is show appreciation for his craft and knowledge in a very subtle way.
Heck: Sometimes it is also just fun to repeat text you learned 10 years ago for the exam and it is just a happy joy to still remember those texts and being able to transformative explain those concepts that seamed so hard so long ago.
When you ask for help to go from 20/50, to 20/20, naked eye.
Haha! This video is gold! True facepalm stories right here.
😂😂 🤦🏻♂️ needed to share this for my optometrist colleagues
"too clear " is often a complaint by patients with too high "-" lens, sometiems also described as "world feels too much 3d". That "sharper" and "clearer" happened so often i started askign which one is worse instead lmao.
The doctor wala part was the best 😂😂
It's called being overprescribed.
I've been a uk optom for over 20 years! I've heard it all!!! 😂
😂
When your patient asks you to help him get out of myopia, when he is still able to read 20/40 on his Snellen.
Because he needs to qualify his vision to 20/20 as a pilot.
Then you "face palm".
Hey to be fair the switching thing is really hard bc some of them are really similar
You don't know how disgusted i would be when someone would want me to try out/look at their glasses and they were grossly covered in grime, sweat and who knows what else!🤢
I love your glasses, they’re so clean and green.
"Oh, yeah, I've been cleaning my contact lenses in toothpaste!"
* visible concern *
Great video doctor! Glad I found your channel!
Welcome welcome!
the "too clear" one actually sounds like me with my first glasses it just literally changed the world i went through seeing the lines in the pavement very sharp again and so on it was really overwhelming
I once had to take an occupational test and I almost failed the vision part. I had to identify what dot was "moving" in 9 situations and I only saw 2 moving. It was so stressfull because I was failing an exam to get into my job and I wasn't even going to drive or anything like that.
The thing is that I went to 3 doctors afterwards because I was worried and they didn't even had the tests to study that... I never knew what was wrong with me. I still sense that the classical illusions are hard for me to perceive, like I see them flat and not 3D. I also have a lot of visual snow and idk if that's normal
I'm a second year optometry student that starts clinic for my first time next week. I'm a bit nervous but your video makes me feel better and makes me look forward to having some fun patient encounters. xD
You’re in for a hell of a ride 😂 enjoy

So well done!!
When they're having me choose between 1, 2, and 2, 3, and 3, 4 I start panicking.... what if I get it wrong?! Hahaha.
Really relaxed after watching this. Damn true indeed.
😂👍
This was great! Thank you! :D
Lolol 1 or 2, 2 or 3 - if you are imaginative or just, like, generally indecisive - this part of the exam is always a nightmare
Bro your channel deserves millions of subs! superb content as always 👍
Aw thank you 😁
You get this in mental health. I don't want medication to manage my mental health because they ruin your body, but I'll keep on using all the illicit drugs to manage as they have no side effects. Oh really? 🤣🤣
The 1 or 2. 3 or 4. I'm always afraid I'm gonna screw it up so I go into detail about both of the clearness or sharpness of each number lol
I love this guy
I finally got glasses for the first time in April after over 23 ½ years of not having any and finding out I have mild nearsighted astigmatism. There seemed to be a slight overall magnification and looking at the ground made me feel short and I definitely felt like the clarity was almost wrong as well. Since my eyes adjusted, I've been spoiled by them and wear them all the time during waking hours even though I don't need them all the time.
3:00
I personally verify my Snellen at home, at 20/20.
My refraction is +0.5 Diopters.
The doctor px is too accurate.🙈
😂😂
I'm Optometrist from 🇵🇭. By the way Good content doc. 👀
Great video Antonio! Still waiting for your long-promised video on vision correction surgeries like LASIK, PRK, SMILE etc. I'd like to know your thoughts on them. I'm also a little curious why you haven't had any of those surgeries since you wear glasses and contacts too.
I’m sorry for the delay but it’s still in the works. I’m trying to get in touch with a few laser surgeons to have their input on the subject. They are the ones that do it, they are the professionals
I can answer that question for you. Because doctors know how dangerous laser eye surgery really is and they'd rather wear glasses than damage their own eyes. For an unnecessary surgery, the risks for complications and side effects are very high. Besides, it only gets you out of glasses temporarily but the damage to your eyes is permanent.
Don't do it. I would rather go the route of orthokeratology lenses. At least that is reversible by discontinued use of the lenses. Surgery is not reversible and comes with a great assortment of underlying risks. Additionally, what are the effects later in life when one needs cataract Surgery. The corneal lens is already traumatized by the earlier lasik procedure. Not enough studies in my opinion.
When I'm choosing between 1 or 2, I seriously don't know if I'm just guessing. Like, 1 looks good. 2 also looks good. If I had to choose which is clearer..... um..... I mean....
😂 nice one. RE the right and left contacts, when I moved and switched optometrists and my new one was fitting me in new contacts, she put the right one on the left side and vice versa, and we’d gone through a couple pairs before I realized what was going on😅 I guess it was because right handed people pick up the one on the right first and put it in their left eye and I’m a lefty? I don’t think any others I’ve seen have done it this way though.
Great content dr.😂😂
Thank you 😁
I work as a COA, and my top face-palm experience would be when a patient asked if she could use castor oil to “melt” her cataracts-like she read in an article. 😂 😢
The phoenetic guy 🤣
Let muscles. 🤦🏻♀️cute! So I got new glasses in February 2012. Needed new ones again July 2012. Then in December 2012 I had to go back. He said I needed a new prescription. I’m like I can’t afford new glasses every few months. Was then legally blind in my left eye and my right eye was getting worse. He sent me out of town to a neuro ophthalmologist something or other. There are tests that should be illegal because they’re pure torture! End result was my SLE was affecting my optic nerves and there’s nothing they can do. Why was my local guy prescribing new glasses until I complained? Idk. Just thought I’d share my face palm moment with you.
What is SLE?

Every scene was Spectacular familiar 😅
It seems humans are the Same in everywhere the world😄
I tend not to say this when I get my eyes checked since I have 20/20 vison now but I use to be really far sighted. If I wear the glasses I use to wear from 2nd - 5th grade I can only see up close and can't see anything clearly that's more than like 3 feet away. I pretty much only use them as reading glasses for small text now and since I use them so infrequently they are in perfect condition. But they frames are small compared to my head now.
as an ophthalmic tech, i gotta say that the phonetic alphabet makes me roll my eyes into the back of my head. no need for an eye exam, i’m pretty sure i can see my own optic nerve
Phonetic Alphabets ... That one must be a military 🪖 guy for sure.
Fun stuff. Thanks.
My pleasure 😁
This was cute!
The Clearer 1/Clearer 2 started throwing me off because my optometrist kept asking, “Is it REALLY clearer or is it just brighter?”
Um… brightness doesn’t mean clearer? I’m still confused 😂 Also he either was always super hungry or super gassy because his stomach made weird sounds a lot. Here’s to you, Dr. W. I hope you got a good meal… or farted. Whichever one you needed.
omg so thatz why some people pay $500+ for glasses because they perceive them as better wowah

My eyes are start burning nd tired when I'm wearing contacts lences in the light
Burning eyes with contact lenses are never a good sign .. probably best to get that checked out
this is so hilarious

Contact lenses and toothpaste OMG
I have said that my vision without my glasses was getting worse. That was because my glasses were only for reading and my far vision was getting a little worse. Turns out at 63 years of age I had started to grow cataracts. Normal for old people but I didn’t think about it and was worried for no reason. Now have eyes checked every 6 months to see if it may be time to remove them. So far there is no need as the change is minimal.
🤣love this
Thanks! 😄
I hate the glasses test "which is clearer" thing. Sometimes one will be sharper, but it becomes distorted (too thin or wide), and is therefore "less clear" to me. idk if it's an astigmatism thing, but sometimes one lens won't be "better" per say, just... differently helpful.
The way you holding the cigarette
Idk if I'm doing it wrong, but I only wear my glasses when I really need it, like in school or working or when I'm going out or exercising, but when I'm on the computer I don't use them.
I had glasses from 18 months old. Almost immediately the nose bridge got broken, so adhesive tape. Then one of the arms, or both!, broke off, so, more adhesive tape...I had so many pairs of glasses all taped together! I don't think they were as scratched as the ones my Jack Russell chewed up though!
I can confirm everything said here x) i have some wtf stories about customer like one trying to do the eye examination closed eye xD
0:43 - that's exactly my mom 😀
Hi there frm 🇵🇭! Have been enjoying your videos!😊 May I just ask what could be signs that I may have to update my glasses?
If you feel like your vision is not as good as you think it used to be even with glasses then it’s probably time to have them retested! 👍
The "too clear" part could also be they aren't used to 20/10 vision yet (if that is what you correct them for) and only remember how clear the exam itself was (i.e the letters on the display and since you get tunnel vision you only see those); can't exactly take out the phoropter to the lobby to look around where it's brighter or towards outside where there is daylight.
Technically you could perform the exam in a well lit room but then their vision might be insufficient for night driving and they would sue you; it's unfortunate.
Is it possible for a patient to request to only be corrected for 20/X ? e.g you only see 20/200 (the big E on a snellen) and only want 20/30 at best (in your office)? Or you can't correct worse than 20/20?
I have two pairs of glasses, for the same conditions, but for different purposes. They both correct to different extents. Has worked wonderfully for me ❤
Haha mate, did you convert your home studio into an optom clinic? 😆🤣😂
7:14 Broooo just go with the weakest ones so you don’t hurt your eyes from overminus
It's a funny one. Good content you got here, Antonio!
thank you! 😁
Hilarious!
Reminds me of the idiots I get in my work. I don't work in this field, but get similar incredible moments of stupidity.
I feel uhh called out on the "1 is sharper but 2 is clearer" along with uhh the too clear. But that was because it was when i was getting my first pair and just... absolutely overwhelmed. Though the one about the glasses the doctor recommends vs customer's demands is another. I was recommended for bigger glasses over the fashion ones. They were telling me the small ones would probably be too tight. And when i said it's okay they told mw to call them if it gets too tight.
Later that same day, it was. I ultimately regretted and even broke my glasses that same week.
the last one HAHAH X'D
😂😂
