Out of all the tutorials I have watched you have been the most organized, engaging instructor I have come across. I hope that you continue to do this work because you are needed. I have been stockpiling fabric since the pandemic and because I watched your tutorial and saw all your beautiful fabrics. I am now hoarding more fabrics and waiting on a huge order but I sincerely want to do something with these fabrics. I’m going to browse through and I hope I find information for beginners because that’s exactly what I am my great grandmother used to quote by hand and that’s all I know how to do. Thank you so much for what you do.
Dear Michelle, I understand stockpiling fabric, and creating a huge stash. I am so guilty of that myself. Oh, how I wish you lived near me, here in Hampton, VA., because I am preparing to teach a beginners' class this spring. We also have classes for beginners at my church. If you would like, I can direct you to some videos on UA-cam that are very helpful for beginning quilters. I also suggest you get in touch with your local quilt shop , because they usually have classes for beginning quilters. Be sure to let me know if you want the list of UA-cam videos. That is a way to learn, but I think you are better off learning from a teacher in person. Let me know how things are working out for you.
Thank you for discussing the color wheel. I’m a beginner quilter and never seen other videos ever mentioned that. I appreciate you and your advice. Please continue with more videos. I just purchased African fabric but didn’t know how to use it. This video is extremely informative and helpful to me. Thanks.
Welcome to the world of quilting. I think you made a wise choice as your creative outlet. I am so glad this video was helpful to you. The more you quilt the more you will find the color wheel to be very helpful. I will post more videos, and I hope you will sew along with me to complete the projects. If I can be of any help to you, please get in touch. ☺
@@letsmakeaquilttogether4574 Thank you. I look forward to sewing with you, however, I am usually working throughout the day and with the holidays ahead, I sometimes don’t get off until 7-10 pm EST. I have ordered a color wheel and it should arrive next week.
I am so glad this video was informative for you. Putting African fabrics in a quilt is a way to get a gorgeous finished product, Just be cautious about 'how' you use them.. ☺
Thank u for this video. I’ve been making quilts but wanted to start using African print fabrics. I love the fabrics but the busyness of the print had me stuck on how to use it. Special thanks for the color wheel instructions. I was too embarrassed to admit I had no idea how to use it. This has been one of the best master classes I’ve taken. God bless u abundantly for what u do.
What a comprehensive, inspiring and informative video. Thank you for this presentation. Gray is also a wonderful neutral to pair with vibrancy. Like paint, gray fabrics have different tonal qualities. Kona Silver is a staple in my stash. I have a beautiful piece of African Wax Fabric in hot pinks and black that I'm not sure that I can bring myself to cut. I may just make a circle skirt with it, but I'm a quilter, and I was looking for ideas...which I certainly found here. And of course, fabrics too pretty to cut work well on the back of our quilts.
I’m new to quilting (I’ve only made one very basic quilt) but this video makes me feel comfortable enough to make more by following your guidelines. Thank you so much ma’am.
I don't know how I missed replying to your comment . Please forgive me for taking so long to reply. I am so glad you found this video helpful as you begin your wonderful journey of quilting. I am sure you have made more quilts by now, and are very proud of your work. remember there are no quilt police, and that every quilt you make has to please only one person -YOU! You are all you need to make spectacular quilts. ☺
Thank you so much for clarifying how to use the color wheel. I have one, but never thought to look at it or use it. Excellent video for any quilter. Very inspiring!
I am so glad to find your channel. I have been gifted some fabrics from different African countries. Also I have been asked to make a quilt for a couple where one is from Zimbabwe for their wedding quilt. Thank you for making these videos!
Thanks for a very informative presentation. I will use this info when I select my next fabrics. I’ve been buying and collecting African prints. I was uncertain about how to put them together. Thank YOU.
I loved your video. This is the first video I’ve seen on using African Fabric that makes so much sense. I appreciate you and your time! Wher do you purchas your fabric? I’ll look at other comments to see if you have answered. Thank you so very much. The very best on African fabric and mainly the color wheel explanation. Your rock!
Thank you for your compliments and your kind words. Most of the African fabrics you saw in this video were purchased from quiltafricfabrics.com. It is a great website, and all of the fabrics I have received from them have been top quality, authentic African fabrics. Go to the website, and browse around. This business is located in Nigeria, and is owned by a wonderful young lady, Miriam. ☺
Thank you so much for your positive feedback. Very soon I will upload blocks using African fabrics along with some other fabrics, ultimately creating a sampler quilt. Please be on the lookout for those videos.
Thank you for your interest my teaching. If I understand your concern correctly, you are asking me to make a video on beginning quilting. Please let me know if I am correct, and I will proceed from there.
Thank you for your kind words. I regret taking so long to get back to you. The pattern for the quilt behind me in the video is "Bento Box". You can find it easily on the internet. Just do a search for bento box quilt pattern, and it will come right up. It is a simple pattern, goes together quite easily. 😊
Please tell me the name of the pattern of the quilt you had hanging behind you on this video. If possible, can you tell me where to get a copy of the pattern. It is so beautiful, that I would like to make one like it also. I just started quilting in 2018.
The pattern in the quilt behind me is called “Bento Box”. It is found on the internet, and there is also a tutorial online for making it. Just do a search for bento box quilt pattern, and it should come right up. I think you will have no trouble making it. Please let me know if I can be of assistance. I will be happy to help!
I have a lot of African fabrics that I purchased in Africa. I actually had to buy an extra suitcase to bring it home. I haven’t been able to cut it. LOL. The fabric is waxed. Do you prewash? I’m also concerned about combining with other fabrics because of the weight difference. Any advice?
Dear Donna, you sound like me when I went to Africa the first time. I was with a mission group from my church and was taken to a fabric shop downtown in Nairobi. I bought so much fabric, I gave all of my clothes away to the villagers so that I could bring the fabric home. I had the good fortune to go to Kenya five more times so needless to say, I brought fabric home each time. To address your question, I do not prewash my African fabrics before I sew them. These fabrics are not meant to go in an American washing machine. They are meant to be washed by hand with a mild soap. They are manufactured knowing most Africans do not have a washing machine. I have not had a need to wash a project made with this fabric yet, but I plan to put it in the bathtub with a mild soap, let it soak overnight, rinse several times, and hang it on my clothesline. You can combine your African fabrics with other fabrics, I have done it several times. They behave beautifully.
@@letsmakeaquilttogether4574 this is great info! After watching your video I pulled out some of my pieces and just stared at them in adoration. Maybe one day soon I’ll get the courage to cut into some. My mom used to laugh when I’d buy fabric for a project, then wouldn’t use it because “it’s too pretty to cut.” Things never change. LOL!
I love this response. Fabric is made to hand wash the old way to preserve the alignment of the weave. I want to travel with you to Africa.@@letsmakeaquilttogether4574
I apologize to you for posting a video that had a mistake in it. I know green is not a primary color, and I am sorry I said it is. I also realize my video had no information in it that could be of help to you. I know that because the mistake was the only thing you could give your focus. I will try very hard to be more like the people who never make mistakes in my subsequent videos. Thank you for pointing out my mistake.

I agree Mama Queen. They need to make the quilt dance!
Thank you, Mama Carla Wiley. I believe if we don't let African fabrics "dance, sing, and be themselves" then there is no need to use them.
So infirmative & helpful when using African prints! My quilt was going to be toooo busy. THANK U!!
