@MegaINVADERGIR I received no gems from either grandparents. It's a long story that I don't have answers to. This song and your reaction has made me emotional over my great uncle, who stepped in as a grandfather as much as he could. I miss him and his very kind wife. They were my grandparents. Great reaction to a masterpiece of a song.
Don't be over there apologizing for love because we know you have it and your grandfather is in better days. ❤. I was raised by my maternal grandparents whom both passed from cancer so you know my face is soaking wet but I needed that release this morning because I was part of their purpose and Im forever grateful.
Most of us have lost loved ones that we truly cherished and highly respected. This song aka the grandma song, touches our lives, hearts and makes us reminisce about those we loved and lost. This song is in the Spinners, Sadie song category. GOD bless you and your family, Ashley and take one day at a time, it will be alright. 😇 Fun fact: Dianne Reeves is George Duke's cousin.
The "grandma song" Dianne Reeves sung this song for all of us that had a wise great or grandmother in our lives. One of the very few songs I actually cried to when I was a teen because I lost my grandmother when this song came out back in the 80s. What a song...... One of my favorite mother's day songs as well.
My grandma was 85, my grandpa was 100 when they passed away, 5 yrs apart. I was in my mid and late twenties and it was hard to let go. I'm 63 now and this is still one of my favorite songs, and yes, I cry after all these years. It will get easier, Ashley. I knew the minute you got to that part and paused, that you were thinking of the recent loss of your grandfather. Heartfelt condolences for you and your family.
She's not unsung at all. She is a well respected and highly praised Jazz Vocalist, who has won 5 Grammy Awards. This particular song was not Jazz. It was her contemporary outing, but she is a world class Jazz Singer. She's not unsung, she's just not mainstream or R&B. She is an Icon in the Jazz world.
@@kiandeshouseofmusic5735 That’s what I meant by DR being “unsung”: a talented vocalist largely unknown to the R&B world. Lesser singers (nowhere near her caliber) have more fame, more cachet. Yes, she’s primarily a jazz songstress whom probably is indifferent to mainstream success but she fully deserves to be more known within the culture. ✌🏽
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 A person isn't unsung if they are huge in their specific genre. I don't feel a person has to be recognized by mainstream audiences to be seen as viable. If that's the case, people like Miles Davis, Cassandra Wilson, Herbie Hancock, Peter Tosh, and so many other artists would be considered unsung. That's one of the reasons I had a problem with the show Unsung, because they had people like The Clark Sisters and Shirley Caesar on their show, and they are far from unsung. They are Gospel Music Royalty. The mainstream is for what's considered "Popular" music and is only limited to that. If Miles sells a million albums to Jazz listeners, but mainstream audiences know nothing of it, that doesn't make him Unsung. He's just outside of the mainstream audience.
@@kiandeshouseofmusic5735 True but I was simply giving DR her flowers. Other music genre fans do it all the time ie asking mainstream-minded ppl to think outside of the box and revere someone with actual talent (and passion). As for Miles Davis, he’s so universally iconic that if you want to give the impression that you’re “cultured”, you mention his name. And volunteer that you own his catalogue. Even if you’re not a jazz fan. Miles is _THAT_ cool.
@@gabrielmcdonnell8699 I get it. By all means, give her all her flowers. She deserves them all. It's just the term unsung that throws me off. You have to put that term in perspective. Anyone can be unsung to someone. For instance, pop audiences may see Luther Vandross as unsung, because he didn't have a lot of pop success, which would indicate that his success would be based on his success with pop audiences, but he is Legendary with R&B audiences. If you've achieved a level of success and notoriety in your field, I don't believe the term applies.
Sorry to hear of your loss. I lost my Mom this year. Dianne Reeves is the REAL DEAL! You can't got wrong with her albums. Especially if you like jazz with R&B touches. People think this is her first album but she had two on a different label before this. Check out her albums. You won't be disappointed. I've seen her live and if you can see her in person GO! BTW: Dianne is a cousin of the late great George Duke who produced this album. Check him out too!
As for the song, I think Diane was talking about her great-grandmother. I propose this bc she described her as having "...4 generations of love on her face..." So if you count Diane as the last/4th generation. If you figure that a generation is 20 years, so 4x20 = 80 years. So that reinforces my proposal that this song is about her great-grandmother. It may have been that she didn't have the space in the timing of her lyrics to say great-grandmother.
RIP to your Grandfather and thank you for this. This song was as strong back then as it is now. Still makes me feel some type of way. Bravo and keep on doing what your doing. Subscribing.
Wowww, Sis. I've been listening to this song for 30-40 years but you brought it to life for me. You got me in touch with a lot of emotions through your reaction. I'm crying with you!!
It's impossible for me to listen to this song without crying now. I loved the song as a child but I didn't understand my mom's tears then. Oh how I do now. All of my grandparents are gone now.
My mom, dad, and grandmothers, molded me into the man that I am today, and their wisdom imparted upon me, guide my steps every day! My condolences and prayers to your family as you mourn your grandfather's loss. Our loved ones have left us a legacy to be left with our children, and passed down to future generations! Your reaction to the song was super emotional and reflective also. 🥹😭❤
Great request and reaction. This song hit me the same way you reacted. I was in high school in 1988 when this song came out not long after my grandfather died who I was very close with. Also a great album that was #1 on the jazz charts and produced by George Duke who also played on this track.
My grandma passed in 1987 the same year I graduated high school. I still miss her to this day. Things she spoke to me about have manifested into my life. 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽🌹🌹🌹❤️❤️❤️
Great Song request! Continual 🙏🏼 prayers are sent your way Ashley! Hold on to the beautiful moments with your grandfather! He is so proud of you! Great heartfelt reaction! ❤👏👍🏽⭐️😎💕🌷🌹🌺🌸😊
DR is talking about her great-grandmother. Remember, she said "...4 generations of love on her face..." If you count the generations, there's her at 3 or 4yo, her mother, her grandmother, then her great grandmother - that's when you get to 4 generations. My condolences to you again, Ashley.
dont feel bad...this song has brought tears to my eyes since the very first time i heard it back in 88/89😂 cuz i was raised by my grand and great grandparents, i lived wit them until i was 12 so i know how u feelin...i teared up wit u while watching😊...im gon send u another song by her on venmo...its a duet wit david peaston, that way u can see her vocal range COMPLETELY
I'm so glad you got to this song every time I hear it I get tears in my eyes thinking about my grandmother My grandmother raised me and my Mother's live three houses down so thanks
🧡🔥🔥 This song does that to everyone who has lost a grandparent. I have no grandparents nor parents so, I get it. It will get a little easier with time. 🙏🏽🙏🏽 TFS!!
Ashley I send a prayer of comfort out for you sweetie. Just know that what your grandparents are teaching you and have taught you has brought me so much joy. I look for you every day. I'm much older than you but your spirit reaches me over and over. Thank you and your grandparents. You are truly a beautiful soul.❤❤❤❤❤
This song was a huge hit in the DC market. They played it non-stop on the radio around the time of Mother's Day that year (I think either 1987 or 1988?)
You will be crying. 😢 Both Grandmothers got their wings. I still have questions. Sometimes I find myself asking "What would Grandmom do in this situation?" How would she handle this? Several people were probably those youngsters [teenagers] who said "What does this old person know? 🤔 SHM! BLAH! BLAH! BLAH! Once you've lost that individual you start to reflect on those precious moments.
It's okay to be emotional 😢❤
