  • Sound demo of 2023 Sadowsky MetroExpress 21 Fret Hybrid PJ 5 Sting Bass. Running through the various sounds one can achieve with this bass. This is the revised version of the bass with roasted maple neck and fingerboard. The action is set at about 1mm at the 12th fret, except the B string which is closer to 2mm at the 12th fret. I hope this is helpful to anyone considering buying this bass! If you have any questions, leave them in the comments section! Thanks for watching!

    Thanks for this. Been thinking of picking one up and I'm very pleased to see that it is quite versatile in the tone arena.

      Yeah no prob! I made this video because there are not a lot of sound demos online of the revamped models. I am going to make a short vid reviewing what I like and don't like about it, so stay tuned, but would give this bass like 8.5 stars out of 10.

    How do you like the fingerboard radius? I'm going to build a bass and an thinking of going for a flatter radius

      I love flat radiuses. I've had basses with 20" radiuses and love them. Can get the action lower, bend strings without fretting put,etc. There are many benefits of a flat radius, but a lot of people are used to the classic Fender 9.5 inch radius. I think 12 or 14 is much more comfortable.

    What is the difference between this and the old one? was about to order on thomann the Sadowsky MetroExpress 5-21 Hybrid CARMP but i see that yours has roasted maple instead

    • @beforemanhattan
      @beforemanhattan  5 місяців тому +1

      From what I know, different neck wood (roasted maple vs maple), fingerboard material (roasted maple and rosewood vs maple and Pau ferro). The j pickup might be different, the SMX pickup is hum- canceling. The biggest difference though from almost 100% of reviews I have read a
      Is the qc on the new ones is far better than the old RSD basses. Everything on mine was near perfect. The frets have the invisible fret technology now as well so no sharp fret edges. No dead spots on mine, the frets were perfectly level when I got it, so I could set up with very low action. The fit and finish is just excellent, and I understand on the older models that was not the case. Warwick does the distribution for these now and they share a lot of parts and technology with warwick like the just a nut. I hope this helps!

    Hi. I'm considering to buy this same bass, but I'm concerned about the J pickup. Is it noisy? How is the noise in this PJ bass in comparison to the JJ?
    Also, how's the string spacing? What do you think in comparison to a 19mm like the Elite V? Thanks in advance

    • @beforemanhattan
      @beforemanhattan  7 місяців тому +3

      I've never played the Sadowsky JJ but hopefully this answer helps- I have a passive Fender jazz bass that has the traditional single coil hum. I used to have a deluxe Fender Jazz Bass that had noiseless pickups but I would still get hum for some reason. This Sadowsky PJ is very quiet. I heard it hum once when I was standing directly under a light but other than that it's very very quiet. The control cavity is shielded super well, probably the best factory shielding job I've seen. The neck profile is super comfortable and thinner than a Fender 5 string. The 19mm spacing is fine, I can play the B string past the 12th fret no issue. The neck looks wider than it is because the body is much smaller than a jazz bass. The factory fretwork and QC is like an 8.5/10. My pickup poles are slightly misaligned with the strings was the only issue but all the others I've seen look fine.

      @manhattan Thanks a lot for this substantial review. I read that the bridge can be changed to switch the spacing from 18mm to 19mm, and that the VTC control can be added. Any ideas? Also, did you get to fix the misalignment? Thanks again!

    • @beforemanhattan
      @beforemanhattan  7 місяців тому +1

      @GonzaReformado sadowsky sells a replacement bridge that is 18mm spacing right on their warwick distribution site. You could get the prewired control plate with VTC and drop that right in or, a bit more difficult, wire in the VTC to the existing controls. I made the alignment a little better they way you would with say a fender - loosen the neck bolts a tad pull the neck the direction you need it to go (for me was up) then tighten the screws back up. I only notice the sound of the misalignment on the B string up past like the 10th fret when it does not oscillate nearly as much.

    I really want me one of these. I wonder how it holds up for metal.

    • @beforemanhattan
      @beforemanhattan  6 місяців тому +1

      It is fine for metal. I have played metal on ibanez and warwick basses, and this bass really is easy to play. If you like tight string spacing like ibanez (16.5mm), for alternate picking and stuff, this bass would take a little getting used to. I use overdrive and fuzz at times with this bass and it really is a good all around bass. The pickup configuration is great. Many metal players use a PJ set up like Frank Bello from Anthrax, for example.

      @@beforemanhattan I’ve only ever owned Ibanez. I grew up with them. The few times I’ve played fender I found it a bit difficult to play fast and move around the fretboard. Also they’re quite heavy basses. But I’ve always loved the Sadowsky tone. And my hero Jason Newsted has always played them. I want the 4 string of this bass. And I’m sure once I run it through my sansamp and fuzz pedals it will improve the tone. Having a 4 string would also help with the weight of the bass. I’m sure it’ll take time to get used to it. But I also will mainly be playing it with a pick.

    • @beforemanhattan

      @bassican7 the sadowsky is actually very light. I have P basses and I used to have a neckthru ibanez, a warwaick corvette etc. The sadowsky is the lightest by far. The body is smaller than a Fender body so it makes the neck look bigger than it is. The body has a fairly large cavity for the preamp and wiring and battery, so that saves weight unintentionally. The body wood is Okume which is a very light wood. I wouldn't worry about the weight. Some websites like Sweetwater will list the exact weight of the bass you are looking at. I run this through a sansamp bass driver and mxr fuzz and it sounds great for heavy stuff. If you look us up on wherever you stream music and listen to "the hurricane" that is probably our heaviest song; it has a breakdown and is as close to metal as we get.

      @@beforemanhattan what bass did you use to record that track? Sounds beefy 🤘🏼

    • @beforemanhattan
      @beforemanhattan  6 місяців тому

      @bassican7 thanks! If I recall correctly just a Fender American Special Jazz Bass, both pickups full on. I just used the di and our guitarist, who also mixes and produces etc our music made it sound heavier with his magic. Live I use a Sansamp bass driver and mxr fuzz for heavier parts.
