- I had the pleasure of watching Liz and the Blue Bird, an anime film highly praised by the community. While I enjoyed the film, I found its central message frustrating and wishy washy. What do you think?

This video is fair use under U.S. copyright law because it is (1) transformative in nature, the video is a journalistic commentary on popular media (2) uses no more of the original work than necessary for the video's purpose, the claimed duration is an edited clip for rhetoric, and (3) does not compete with the original work and could have no negative affect on its market.

What were your impressions on the film?
Never heard of it until today.
This is actually the first I've ever heard of it... 😅
Saw it in Walmart, not sure if I shoul get it
painfully slow... not that it means it's bad... I just didn't like it
Havent seen it YET. Is on my TO WATCH LIST ok.
Liz and the Bluebird is one of the few anime to deeply resonate with me, and along with that and the amazing directing done by Naoko Yamada, as well as soundtrack and animation, it has become my favorite anime.
egh, this is pure mindset and perspective....... seeing as how HIbike Eupho was already heavily and realistically "asian-high school" influenced, I'm not surprised that the ending turned out the way it did for this film. As someone who attended high school in Asia, I can say that the whole cultural mindset of MOST people, whether it'd be the students or the parents, are to "aim towards" your future. Meaning that friendship and romantic interests are second fiddle in the grand scheme of things and can / should be casted aside if it means securing a "good" post secondary school for you to attend.
You could say it's almost always "assumed" that students should take this route in life and is a part of society's norm for them to do so, hence the lack of a need of an explanation for the 2 girls who decided to go separate ways. It's meant to be a bitter sweet ending that many in Asian high schoolers have experienced, and thus making it more relatable to those living in Asia.
If anything Clannad is the one that "breaks the norm" and stands out as something different than what is deemed acceptable to society in Asia. Again, it could just be KyoAni's approach to the HIbike-verse is more of a realistic one so they went with the ending that's more ground in realism. Whatever happens to the 2 girls after graduation is left to our speculation and will most likely not have an conclusive ending >.>
Noizemaze4 You're right. It's as if there's an unspoken force compelling them.
You're asking why they didn't take a route where both of them attend the same university, while the answer is pretty simple: they won't grow up if they did that, which may make their love to be something to be regretted. Letting each of their partner go so that they can pursue things that are greater are both of their expression of love. Nozomi wants Mizore to be happier by letting her go to majoring in music study because her oboe playing is so good and there's a lot of potential in it, and Mizore wants Nozomi to be happier by letting her go to pursue whatever it is she's trying to achieve because of her unconditional love towards Nozomi. By insisting on going to the same university, they might have more time to spend together, but that'd defeat the idea that they're and they'll always be together because of the love they shared each other. Even more, by insisting the idea that they have to stay close in distance and preventing each other from becoming "better" version of themselves based on the image they built would definitely ruin the ending.
It's simply unfair to compare it to Clannad because Liz and Clannad has a different point. Liz focused on adolescence, on teenagers eagerly trying to explore the world, to grow as an adult and how teenagers express themselves, while Clannad is about the importance of doing good, the joy and struggles of having a family, and why it's important to try to connect with others in a seemingly disconnected world.
About the fictional story of Liz and the Blue Bird, the reason why Liz insisted on having the Blue Bird fly was because the Blue Bird does not know herself, her capability of becoming something... "more", than her current state, and her love for Liz is preventing her from achieving many good things she can get out there. Liz realized this and decided to sacrifice a bit of her possessiveness because she love the Blue Bird, and the Blue Bird realize Liz's intention because she doesn't want to hurt her with her love. And so the "decision borne of love" is made to set them apart.
I'm absolutely sure that was the point of the film. That said it doesn't make me any less frustrated by it. I don't think the film even came close to explaining itself the way you just did.
I saw the film in Japan and not really being able to fully understand it, you're left to basically just rely on those subtle cues to tell the story and it's kind of amazing, like I don't think I ever experiences anything like it, basically having the entire relationship told solely through body language and music when the language barrier flies over your head, like it's almost better not being able to understand fully
i never heard of this film before, I'll watch this video during my time at school X)
I just finished my video and here are my thoughts:
1)This is just a side note feel free t not read this one XD-I skipped all the scenes involving Clannad because I refuse to watch the anime if it doesn't involve Tomoyo and Tomoya getting together. They're by far, after reading the VN of Clannad(Tomoyo Route of course) and 18+ of Tomoyo After, that they're the best couple I have ever seen.:P
2)In my opinion, what I learned from my life and what I see the world around me is that if you ever decide on something, just make sure to not question it and just do it. You shouldn't have to force yourself into doing something that you don't want to do or even question yourself mid way. It's fine to do what you think is best because nobody knows what the outcome will be.
3)Think my favorite part of the video was when you mentioned the bird being forced to fly away without proper development because it's going along with my #2. I haven't seen the film, but that girl(not the bird) does not digest the situation further.
Anyway that's all I got. Great video dude! Clearly showed love into making the video. :)
I think you just went against the thesis of your argument, that is your video title, by basically summarizing everything that happened in the film in the first half of your video. You clearly know what happened in the film, and is expecting the film to be as emotional as other anime films. Thus, I am inclined to disagree with what you wanted to say in this video. The film does not use the overdramaticized approach to portraying the struggle to communicate. Yamada uses the visuals and the sound not just to tell the story, but to make you feel what the characters are going through. That is not something many anime films pull of very well. (Obviously, watching a film is a subjective experience, and I'm thinking you're really missing out important parts of the film to make your argument valid, which is why I'm also inclined to think making this video might be done in bad faith.)
Also, about the bird not wanting to fly, there literally was a scene where Liz wakes up not to find the blue bird in bed and pretends to sleep as the blue bird creeps back to bed.
And about the message of the film, I took it as more about wanting to grow up but the distance it entails from the people you are close is something that comes with it. I think Yamada did pretty well in portraying adolescence in Liz (it's present it Tamako Love Story as well).
Seth C Telling the plot and feeling the emotions are two different things. It's more that it fails to sell me on its themes.
@@OtakuDaiKun I didn't really clarify. It's easy to equate the film "struggling to communicate" with the film selling you on its themes. I often do that with any bad book/film/series I come across.
I do agree with your point that, compared to Yamada's previous film or any other well-done emotional film, this was emotionally less charged (it might have been because I was more sold on Koe no Katachi) although really technically impressive film-wise. I think it's important to maintain any film's technical quality from how it speaks/delivers to its audience since the latter is more subjective (not to say the former isn't either).
Personally it’s my favorite anime film but rip this review
Martin Parra I really like it. This is mostly a talking point to show off the film.
😂😢😮😢🎉❤😢😂❤ 1:50
While you're not wrong for wanting what you want, I appreciate the more "realistic", quiet and subtle direction the film took to closer mirror actual life, (All while being not boring). Compared to the "fairy tale, childrens, perfect ending", which is already super common especially in anime. Not that wanting one or the other is wrong, it's just different. But because of that, it stands out a bit more to me. Not everything needs "Big explosion definitive end. Period.". Some stories are just meant to exist and be told/viewed. And i think this is one of them, where the director never meant or intended to "compete" to try to be better then other films/animes, so i think it is wrong to compare/rank it to other in that way. You kinda missed the "contrast" in compare and contrast, and went more for compare and "I wanted b/c of my values/exception".
mvk15 I'm not even saying it has to end the way I want it to. It's moreso how the film doesn't even consider and deny other options.
Fantastic impression/view point , Daikun.
please make a video on anime fight scenes and anti-heroes
i have so many White Albume 2 vibes from this movie with out the love tingle in the story it was interesting and a good film but i cant rate it up with Your Name or even A Silent Voice as a masterpiece
I didn't watch anime films a lot because I just don't enjoy them as much as a serial anime.
Isn't this a prequel to sound of euphoria
Setsuna K Yuuki More like a spinoff, and it takes place after the first two seasons.
Smash it like your waifu😂
Wait, so this isn't a lesbian hentai? How you gonna make those sexy hair animations and cute characters designs and not have some sex scenes?
NewCanadianTurtle Just imagine the day Kyoani makes a legit hentai.
