CLASSIC cars & aircraft - a perfect day??

  • March's "Cars and Caffeine at Combermere" meet in Cheshire was joined by fantastic weather, so we headed out in the Renault 4CV (or 750 to be accurate) and the MX5, confident that there'd be a good showing of classic cars and later sportscars this month.
Disappointment was not to be, as a great variety of cars old and new(ish) made the trip over, and the car park was soon packed with enthusiast-owned cars, including quite a few oldies that we hadn't seen before. Highlights included a great pair of early vintage Sunbeams and a very unusual Ford-badged pickup of the early 1970s. A mighty Mustang that starred at this meet a little while ago also turned up, as did various Triumphs including TRs, a pair of Dolomite Sprints, and a 13/60 Herald that we'd not seen before.
Rear-engined cars were numerous this time, including our Renault, a pair of Imps (well, an Imp and a Singer Chamois), various Porsches, and a couple of air-cooled VWs.
The meeting last 'til late morning, at which point we headed back, almost the last to leave as usual. The weather was still fab so once lunch was out of the way, I pointed the MX5's nose in the direction of Shropshire and visited Sleap airfield to see what old aircraft were being exercised. Again, no disappointments on that score.
All in all, a perfect day in the great outdoors.

The Ford Courier pick up is a rebadged Mazda B1800, bought in for the 1970's fuel crisis, also sold in South Africa and Australia, I have owned it nearly 3 years, fresh from California, imported by Wheels of Old Shrewsbury, I used it regularly for collecting firewood and occasional trips to the tip for friends and family, always attracts attention where ever we go.

Too bad they moved way from the small pickups like the Courier. I looked for an old Ranger pickup that had the right size for me, but they are all used up, rusted away or on their last legs. That courier looks sweet.

      SWEET❗️
These were quite popular here in the U.S.
Mazda still had their Rotary pickups available, but these little trucks never got one. They tended to rot quickly.
I think Ford started importing these in around 1972.
Ford bought into Mazda around 1974 - about 25%. Then upped it to 33% a few years later.
      Really nice truck.

Thanks Richard . That was a packed show and a busy little airfield . That floatplane was a super surprise ! I had to study that Sunbeam motif for some time ..... that M5 colour is Estoril Blue , a very popular colour and the Mustang was more than likely built in Australia , the U.S never built RHD . I only know this because there was an identicle car at Powderham Classic Car last year. And l had an 1850 and a Sprint in the day . In the wet the 1850 would leave the Sprint in the distance in tight cornering , obviously it was quite the reverse in the dry.......incidently l was driving out of Shaldon and overtaking a car when the gearbox seized on the 1850.... for a split second l had absolutely no idea what was happening with blue smoke belching from the rear wheels but dipped the clutch and free wheeled to a controlled stop !!! Thanks Richard.

I was a mechanic in a petrol station many years ago and the boss used to employ older students from the local college to pump petrol. One day the driver of an old Landrover wanted petrol and asked him to check the water.so the student opens the bonnet and seeing what he thought was the radiator cap( but it was the oil cap ,as they had an oil cap that looked like a radiator cap) he could see no water so he filled the engine with water till it was running out of the top of the rocker cover. The boss then saw it, so we pushed it into the workshop where I did a quick oil and filter change.

Great video. Sunbeams are especially nice to see. All the cars and aircraft really. Ford Couriers were sold in Canada. They were reasonably good as I remember. Salt on Nova Scotia roads in the winter eventually makes vehicles here disappear unless well undercoated and looked after. Nice to see some of the entry level lower prices cars to. So often they are forgotten because they are so plain and optionless. There is something about bare minimum cars that attracts me to them. They are quite often the cars that change the world. The Austin/ Morris Mini and the model T Ford. World changers. The T Ford put the world in wheels and the Mini put front wheel drive in the market place for food. Isagonis got the concept right the first time. The whole motor industry worldwide copied it. Looking forward to your next video.

The Ford Mustang might have been imported from Australia as it is right hand drive. If I remember correctly new cars in Australia had to have right hand drive or be converted before they could be registered. Cars which are over 25 years old and are left hand drive can be registered.

The Ford Tonka is a rebadged Mazda B1600. Hard to tell exactly size wise. could also be the slightly smaller 1200. Being USA I would think the 1600. Either way its rebadged Mazda to bring smaller utes to USA market

Sunday evening would not be the same without your excellent videos! Nice to see your wonderful 4CV (envy!) having an outing and I love how its door shuts with minimum effort and a satisfying click. I trust Mrs OCC was persuaded out from under the duvet to defrost the MX5? 🙂The stars of the show were undoubtedly those two glorious vintage Sunbeams, closely followed by that pristine, brown Dolly Sprint, the dark green Mustang and the wonderful selection of TRs. Chuckled at the "No airbags, we die like real men" sticker. I know you can't control it, but it's a shame the meet seems dominated by so many expensive, shouty, modern 'supercars'. I'm glad you gloss over them. Very sedate departure by the MX5 - prehaps Mrs OCC knew she was being monitored!

The fastback Mustang is a 67 and it appears to be done up to ape the BULLITT movie car ( which was actually a 68), Dark Highland Green paint, horse deleted from the grill, American Racing torque-thrust wheels. The movie car was plated JJZ109, this car is close.... JJZ106. The gold Comet is nice, these are Mercury's version of the Ford Maverick and you have to love the sound of those of those Triumph 6 engines under full noise too. Must say your Renault was looking smart in the sun, that car has really grown on me. Wish we has those sorts of meets near where I live.

The Ford Courier , like the one at 37:00, were everywhere in the mid-late70s, here in the U.S. The Mazda variant was available with a ROTARY, and I spent many happy hours cruising around in a friends. It easily disgraced any v8 in the stop lite grand prix. The worst feature to live with on the Ford version was a very obnoxious cooling fan roar, but they were as good as the imports, and that was impressive.
