Bad Landing - Landing at a Challenging Airport in a Cessna 170

  • I flew to West Liberty a few weeks ago to take the plane to get worked on by Kevin Mays, what an awesome mechanic, I highly recommend him.
This was a challenging airport for me to land at. The runway is 2400 ft long, and although I have been able to stop my plane before the end of the 1000 ft markers, all my landings have been on much longer runways. The runway has quite a steep grade and there is a nice hill of final. Both of those were firsts for me as well.
I think my approach speed was way too high, and that I wasn't anticipating the runway rising up to meet me, especially after the first bounce. Something else I've learned from people is to push forward on the yoke, even on three pointers, to stop the tailwheel from bouncing. This has worked pretty well for me. Next time I'll start by approaching slower, and try do better in the flare.
Please feel free to comment with tips and advice. Hope you enjoy.

Over here in Virginia we have Eagles Nest W13 which is the shortest public use runway in the state at 2004 x 50. The end of it comes up real fast at times!😳

They had a cirrus blow both mains and stop on the threshold here a few years ago. Both the pilot and copilot were instructors

No easy approach, but well performed. Good directional control! It’s interesting that the Tailwheel jumped that often. Isn’t it also the Scott Tailwheel? You did good to master this landing! 👍👍👍

Thanks brother. I came in way too hot on that one :) learned later to slow down. Yes it's a Scott TW

Also don't afraid to put in a slip if you're a bit too fast/high...

Hahah Nice man, I feel your pain... when the airplane decides to act like a spoil child misbehaving, embarrassing the sh1t out of you in public lol... I wish I would have recorded all my learning curves to look back on them :/ .... I need to record more...

Lol, yep. You can't be afraid to look stupid every now and then when learning to fly tailwheel. Cause it's gonna happen.

+Ashlyn Molinaro JK. I use fltplan go for most of my aviation related stuff. It's like foreflight, not as good, but it's free. It can do everything I need it to do, and connects up to my Dual ADSB receiver so I see traffic and weather. I use MyFlightbook for an E logbook. And AeroWeather for TAFs and Metars.

Did you get your endorsement upon buying this airplane ?
You can add forward stick to plant the mains during any landing style. a common style I see locally is slightly tail low, and plant the mains by raising the tail. This is not a wheel landing by definition ad it wasn't flown onto the runway (maximum authority of aircraft).

Justin, saw both your comments. I appreciate the feedback. And you're spot on with the forward pressure. I still don't have the timing down all the time, but I do use that technique. I've also slowed down my approaches which has helped a lot. But also learned that you need more power when the plane is loaded :)

I do fly, although none of my videos have outside reference. I will look into doing more editing and adding an outside gopro. You should go watch my tail wheel endorsement! lol Its on my page. I had been flying tailwheels on and off in others planes for 15-20 hours over a 10 year period before I finally got my endorsement... didn't need it as I wasn't PIC in the past. I had never done wheel landings so that was a hard pill to swallow.
Now that the lightbulb went off on wheel landings, its what style I land with 98% of the time. I find it as a very controlled landing VS 3 - point. Smoother for the passengers and most of all, small rudder movements. 3-point in the citabria leads to the gear loading and unloading which is followed my lots and lots of rudder movement.
I highly recommend wheel landings over 3 point, but every pilot and aircraft are most comfortable with different landings. I wouldn't wheel land a pitts and I wouldn't 3-point a DC-3. :) Good luck to you. KEEP FLYING

Man that Citabria looks like fun. Even though you have one camera, you do get a lot of info from that view. You can see the controls and outside the plane really well.
I do prefer wheel landings in my plane, especially since they're nice to my tailwheel. I have a shimmy that pops up from time to time :/
