FISHING FOR DINOSAURS | Montana Paddlefish (Amazon Episode)

  • A 70 million-year-old dinosaur lives in the rivers of Montana. The Fresh Tracks crew heads out to try their hand at catching the prehistoric paddlefish, a native species that has changes little since the time of dinosaurs. Hooking a paddlefish is just the start of the adventure, as these fish can easily top 100 pounds. That makes landing them from a river bank quite a challenge.
    The thrill of the paddlefish doesn't end once one is caught. In this catch-clean-cook experience, they take whatever fish they hook and cook it up to share. Tag along as the guys take a few days to chase these giants, with plenty of laughs along the way.
    This is an Amazon episode from Fresh Tracks season 8, that you can find on Amazon Prime Video.

    Spoonbills are actually brackish water fish.Where I scubadive we have at least 3 and they would make the 2 you guys caught look like babies. But very nice job!

    I just knew Pops was gonna show us how it was done! Hate that his line broke! Most men his age could never fish all day like that, you rock ol timer!
    And good on David for not editing out his disappointment...thats fishing and hunting, so many shows only show the highlight reel, that normal guys get a misconception that it's just catching and killing!

    I'm not much of a snagger, but up here in Alaska, we use weighted trebles that have the lead and treble all together. It's far more efficient and simple than rigging a treble, and your weight further up the line.

    Long ago I saw many in markets for sale. Many types of fish and critters were sold in the New Orleans markets. Often big alligator snapping turtles were sold from wire cages.

    You need a gaffe to land those, the way your doing it would be the equivalent to getting into the ocean to land a large halibut.

    • @jlondon158
      @jlondon158 3 роки тому

      You don't need a gaff. They have no teeth nor scales nor bones. Used to be able to catch and release .. so obviously gaffs were out. A rope loop around tail works well. The Missouri gumbo mud makes things more difficult - but yjat what makes memories .

    When I was very young about 8, my dad and uncles from my moms side would go to Kentucky Dam Snagging. I know they bought permits but I don't know if they were specific on a certain species. I thought they were after catfish but they would catch a little bit of everything. At the dam it rip rap rock on steep slopes all the way down into the water. They used ocean rods with big Pin Reels and would cut a hole in a tennis ball and slide it up over the bottom of the rod and tape it in place because it usually rested on their hip. When they would hook into something big they would fight it until it would start to tire then if they had quite a bit of line to retrieve they would turn around and put the rod over their shoulders and start walking up the hill until they had it all the way in. My dad got a job and we moved and we never went back. When I was grown my dad was in poor health from years of hard living and working in the coal mines. I talked to him about going back with me and showing me the ropes because I had always wanted to do it. Unfortunately time ran out and we never got there. A few years ago we my wife and I traveled through that area and I seen a sign that read Kentucky Dam 4 miles in a different direction so I told her we had to go see it on our way back. When we drove over it there was road construction going on and the traffic was really congested through there. I couldn't figure out how to get down to it and because this was shortly after 9-11 I wasn't even sure if it was open to the public. I know a lot of smaller dams in this area were closed off in fear of some kind of sabotage I guess. Anyway I did get to see it and the one thing I couldn't get over was how small it was. I mean it's big enough that they ferry barges back and forth through it but when I was there as a kid. To me it was as big as the Hoover or Grand Coolee. They caught a lot of big fish there. My dads biggest was a 60 some pound Blue Catfish. He told me once that it was the hardest work. He said in one weekend of straight fishing he lost 14 pounds.

    In Argentina we have the Sabalo, also a filter feeder, for ages considered impossible to hook in the mouth. In recent years, the rise of carpfishing saw the introduction of the Korean trap, a spring based feeder which you fill with some sort of packed groundbait, with the hooks embedded in it. All of a sudden we started hooking sabalos every day, besides carp. They suck on the cereal ball and eventuelly swallow a hook. Might justify a try.

      your argument would be better suited to not fishing for them at all. if you do, you're better off keeping it considering what you have to put it through to catch it. So go in, catch one for the experience, keep it for the meat and roe, and then fish for other things.

    Wish those big girls would have been let go to boost the population, or moved to areas that they're struggling in, but good job! Looks like a great time!

    What do you do...when and if...you snag a different fish...it is then legal....?...and you can keep the fish..?..or must throw it back...?...

      If you draw a “keep” permit you can keep one paddlefish. You have to tag the fish you keep with a locking tag and you cannot keep another. You can continue to snag and release. Check out Montana FWP regulations on paddlefish fishing.

      Here is what I've witnessed at Intake MT. Somebody is going to snag a huge pallid sturgeon at least 5 times a day.Everybody gets excited, so they pull the fish out of the water and try to hold it up for pictures. The fishes tail snaps cause the drunkards can't lift it high enough and they slip it back hoping no warden saw them.
