  • I ride the Craters of the moon mountain bike park in Taupo.
    I am riding my e bike, the specialized turbo levo.
    I am looking for some exciting trails. The question is what do I find.

    Craters is not an Enduro park like most nz parks are. It’s a classic XC place and you don’t need an e-bike really. It’s probably the best place to bang off lots of Kms on single track without having to grind up some gravel forestry roads. It’s one of the best spots in the winter when it’s raining a lot, and amazing for folks new to mtbing as well. You can ride 50+ kms all on single track and not a bit of forestry road which you can’t do anywhere else, with no soul destroying boring road climbs (think Morangi rd, direct rd, in the redwoods.)

    Thanks for sharing, is always useful to get visiting riders perspective. FYI Megaliscious and Beagle Boys are intermediate XC tracks and not full of 'gnar'. This is set out in the signage at the entry to the park and trails.

    • @bestdayevermtb2

      Thanks Rowan. I do feel somewhat bad about not giving craters a glowing review as I know how much work has gone into recreating those trails. I rode megaliscious on the recommendation of the locals and think it is a good track and believe it may become a great track when the trees grow back. I have had people try to convince me that trails in the open are just as good as in the trees but it simple is not true. Eagle vs shark is a great example. The top section in the trees is super fast the bottom section in the open is not anywhere near as good. Beagles boys was my mistake. Was using my phone and didn't have glasses. Thought it was black. Didn't help though that sign at the top had an A and a B line then there was nothing on the A line. I thinks as the trees grow back the park will improve and maybe on my next visit i wont be so grumpy. If you saw my great lake trail videos i absolutely loved that ride.😁

      @@bestdayevermtb2 All good and as noted, it is always useful to get rider feedback, especially from those who ride widely like yourself. We would love more downhill trails but pumice soils do not lend them selves easily to stable downhill trails that can be sustainably maintained. I agree re the trails in the open vs the ones in the trees, it is my riding preference too. It is a fact of life with trails in a pine forest unfortunately. This is accentuated by our pumice soils which dry out very quickly in such circumstances, esp if they are recent builds like The Meg. Saw your GLT vids and they are great. We shared them on the Great Lake Trail Facebook page too. cheers again.

    Ok just wanted to start off by saying we are loving your videos. My husband and I love your humour 🤣 We also learn a lot. My question is that we just upgraded to full suspension bikes and want to gain that confidence for those fast roll overs and drop offs to increase our speed on tracks etc. Do you have any tip or do you do a little coaching of people? My husband has come from a cross country style so hasn’t done much jumping etc. and well I’m just a girl trying to improve myself. I know you just have to put yourself out there and do it but I’d rather not break myself or my new bike 😂😂

    • @bestdayevermtb2
      @bestdayevermtb2  3 роки тому

      I would strongly suggest some coaching. Most people who get coaching find it really helps. The funny thing for me is I started a youtube channel and I am now seen as an expert on all things mountain biking, which sadly is not the case. I am not an expert and probably not a good teacher also. One thing I would say is use your dropper post. If you don't have one you must get one. With the seat down you can move your body easily keeping your center of gravity low. This helps cornering, drops, jumps, pumping, technical roots etc.
      I hate to say this but mountain biking involves crashing. This can be VERY expensive if you can't work and need surgery. Anything you do to reduce the risk is money very well spent. A bit of money on coaching could be a great investment.

    Just recently purchased a gopro 8. Having a mare trying to get the settings right.
    My video of craters a grainy mess. What are the main settings do you use please..... This ole duck wants to outdo the grandkids.😅

    • @bestdayevermtb2
      @bestdayevermtb2  3 роки тому

      Ok for POV I use 1080 60fps. hypersmooth on (not boost) bit rate high, shutter auto ev comp-1, white bal 5500k iso min 100 iso max3200, sharpness medium, colour flat. For other shots I use linear. You can set up different ones on the 8 so it is easy to flick back and forward. If the colour is a bit flat I may add some saturation when editing. I stole these settings from the loam rangers video. your gopro footage still sucks lets fix that. I recommend you watch it. To be honest I am still learning myself. I also use a chin mount. This is so much better than a chest mount. Chest mounts really require a gimbal to be any good. Good luck. Let me know how you get on.

    • @bestdayevermtb2
      @bestdayevermtb2  3 роки тому

      One more thing you must either get a wind sock or place stick on wind mufflers over the two mics. You can buy wind mufflers for 8's on alibaba. Without this the audio is terrible when riding.

      I can see that a large area has been felled and a huge amount of work has gone into reinstating the trails. As the trees grow back the track surface will improve dramatically. One thing about our pine forests they do turn over quickly.

    Pretty bizarre, Craters of the moon stoped in the time, old trails for 26" wheels, and not well maintained. Actually you have to pay N$70 a year to be able to ride there, for what reason? The trails are complete abandoned!

    • @bestdayevermtb2
      @bestdayevermtb2  3 роки тому +1

      I think that is a little unfair. Given how much forest has been felled a huge amount of work has gone into rebuilding a huge network of trails. I believe those trails will be much better when the trees grow back. I do wonder if some of the older trails have not had the maintenance due to this huge rebuild. I gladly paid my $10 and look forward to seeing what craters looks like in the years to come.
