    I have to admit, when I started watching your videos I first was scratching my head about how you could resurrect that line. But you have accomplished A LOT in 1 year. I am no longer scratching my head, I am just looking forward to each new video and learning so much about all aspects of railroading that you are teaching us. Thanks for educating me.

    Your straightforward and honest attitude is a great asset. May you have much success in this venture. Hopefully, you can develop a rail car to truck transfer. Of course this will depend on whether the delivering carrier will install a switch off their line to yours. Take care and God bless!

    Fantastic video! I commend your economic principles. Also, with "stockholders" the next thing that would happen is a "Board of Directors." Oooooh, best avoided. I think family businesses are good and I wish the very best for yours. Please do expand your fashion line into winter ware. Before long I would imagine you will need to have some whistle training for the engineer staff. Track plan is a lot of work, but when it is done it will be "done" and not a weak point in the line. Put fixing the phone line on the list, in case Warren should call back with a better offer or some work.

    I know this is a high risk project for you, and you are probably feeling a lot of stress, but you are living the dream for a lot of us. You have a lot of experience and knowledge on the railroad, and you should feel proud of all the work you have done getting the ETR as far as it has. Keep up the good work, I really hope it all works out for you.

    That section that gets swamped needs redone. I agree pull the rail, remove the old ties, and maybe get a small dozer in there to scrape the old mud filled ballast.. you can put in proper drainage pipes to facilitate better drainage away from the track as you put new ballast in and raise the grade of that sunken section. It will just keep sinking especially once weight is on it otherwise. If you want to do anything with that railroad involving loaded cars all the track they touch needs to have a stable foundation or you could end up with a broken rail with the up/down movement or worse.. it will be easier to get it done now than it would be after you have paying customers and need to use that track. Would be a good time to fix any issues with switches aswell.

      I worry that close switch might need the same treatment, still looks low there. farther one might be ok hard to tell from that distance

      I agree Jason, but what I would do after removing the old ties, mud and old ballast and putting drainage pipes in, is bring in some fresh dirt to bring it up instead of ballast. Dirt is much cheaper than ballast. You can pack it in to raise it up, then dump your ballast and level it from there. Dumping ballast in that low of an area is a waste of good ballast and costly.

      From watching Letsdig18 I think bringing in clay and packing it down would help with the drainage. Maybe rent an excavator and dig out a proper drainage ditch to lead the water away.

    My Father work's on the Railroad He said absolutely remove all Old Balast and replace with New Ballast and Ties and make sure You have a good grade to let water run off. Awesome video as always

    I like Jason's suggestions below. Also you might want to spray some more weed killer before the weather gets cold and get that plant material out of there. You definitely have come a long ways. Just imagine what it will look like when all the track and roadbed work is complete. A pretty railroad will bring in business.

    How about getting an N scale and HO scale 50' boxcar designed with your logo, then selling them on your channel. We would have a momento of the line, you could make a little out of it , everyones happy. Just a thought.

      Commission multiple car, different numbered sets- two to six cars. Perhaps even solicit atlas or bachmann to put together a mow train set with a 50 ton loco, work crane, tender, some flats, gondola, and work/ transfer caboose. Could have the high rail dump, an old clamshell bucket dozer with hoe, & track speeder.

      Athearn would be an ideal brand for HO & N Scale Boxcars. Athearn did have an special run of HO Scale MR&T Locomotives and an Caboose. =^.^=

    Brian, I have been following you and Brian for over a year now. You should be extremely proud of the progress you’ve made. Having a general idea of what an engine would cost and trying to quantify the amount of time, money, and effort you have put in, I thought it would take longer for you to get one. Boy was I pleasantly surprised when that video popped up! Keep doing what you’re doing! Maybe a nice sweatshirt or a knit cap for the winter line?

    I think you are right. Elevation and Ballast are 2 good things to do. Flooding has a way of returning which means big bucks for the railroad.

    If you do take that section up to re-ballast maybe you can go down deeper with a decent size culvert pipe and also get it to remove the standing water between the two tracks

    Yup pull the track first new ties if you have standing water maybe concrete ties would be best new weed control but winter coming soon weeds will die here soon frost maybe this weekend will take care of the weeds. Great video looking forward to long sleeve shirts I will get one for sure

    Well first I would like to say congrats on your up coming anniversary. You two have done a great Job that run down the line proved that. As for the bad section of track area with no tie downs. I would say since you’ve done such an excellent job on the rest of the line stop and take the time pull it all up raze it to the right level re ballast it and lay down the track make it perfect like the rest. Take the time to enjoy your great Accomplishments and progress. When you are ready and break out from a Dorment line then start to learn the FRA rules. Stay safe and Thank you for your videos.

    There are very few places where a rail fan can drive a train. While it may be down the road, I would absolutely pay money to show up for a day and switch some cars for the East Terminal Railway. I'm sure there's insurance and other issues to work out, but I suspect you can find enough people willing to pay enough for the day to more than cover the costs. Instead of paying employees to switch cars, you can get people to pay you for the privilege. It's a way to give back to the community.

    At one time I lived 7 miles from the UP main line. At night you could hear the engines, tell whether they were EMDs or GEs, whether they were loading or in Dynamic Braking.

    I would absolutely recommend the course of action you are considering. Remove the rails and set them aside. Then excavate the existing roadbed (the mixed rock and soil will not support the anticipated load). Install any drainage you think necessary. Install the new bedding to an appropriate level depth and place the tires as per spec. Then reinstall the rails. This will give you the best chance of long-term success. I am a retired PE in multiple states with experience in heavy construction but no longer am in active practice. Go getem tlger !!

    Raise the rail and ballast to remove the dip in the track. Place filter fabric under the ballast to prevent contamination of soils pushing up into the ballast.

    Well some Remidy Ultra will take care of the broad leaf weeds. I would mix it with some High Yeald Killz All or Roundup. Add a surfactant like some dish soap. It will stick to the vegetation and you will end up with a good clean kill on all the weeds. Agree with the raising of the track and ties. Keep it a rolling and stay safe.

    Good idea to remove the rail and ballast then re spike it. I would recommend using plastic or concrete sleepers given the amount of water this area subject to.!

    My area has had lots of rain. My front yard has never been so wet. You might try to burn the weeds a way with a torch. I heard back in the 60's and 70' the rail road would do that on a side line to clean them up.

    If you've got a creek nearby and that area that you want to elevate is prone to flooding regardless of the track structure when you redo that section it might be a good idea to install a pipe of sorts.

    It really is a great day when a new video is added. Thanks it is really entertaining and you know how much the viewers love to see new ETR information. Water is the enemy and drainage is the way to protect the track. Standing water cannot be allowed near the ties or they will soon rot and won't hold spikes or the rail which will result in derailments. New ties, more stone, raised track and positive drainage is always the answer when maintaining track. Your enthusiasm and care for this railroad will result in unlimited success which we want to experience and enjoy along with you.

    As a new subscriber in the UK (you had me at 'you wouldn't want to be on the bike' - I love your attitude!) who's watched as many videos as I could find, I have to admit I was a little disappointed to hear 'no drones' as I'd love an overview like that. Maybe you could get a friend with a drone to just make one video? Or if you don't want that, I'll happily settle for some clues on where to find you on google earth! Congratulations on the first year's achievement!

    Just a small suggestion...a 'safe practice' if you will. Two blasts of the horn before you move forward, three before moving backwards OR ring the bell before and while starting to move either direction. Prevents an accident, or worse.

    Question - as your rules might be different - but before a locomotive moves, the bell has to ring. At least that is the rule here in Canada. Love watching you guys working... your railway is not much off from the conditions I am working with here - I am the track foreman for a 10 mile stretch of tourist operation. We have a lot of tie work to be done, and always have issues with drainage, ties, ballast and more... but we're getting there.

    Yeah almost a year since this interesting video popped up on my feed with those two guys armed with a gas and battery chainsaw started hacking at a jungle with a couple of rails sticking out of it and the ambitious goal of running their own railroad. I subscribed after that first video and have been cheering right along as I've seen the ETR become more and more a real railroad as the plant is reclaimed from nature.
    Yeah have to agree with roll the rails and pretty much start fresh rather than MacGyver a temporary solution.

Was a get it done kind of guy my adult life with the last 42 years moving freight through I did it on rubber tires rather than steel wheels but a heart failure diagnosis a year ago has retired me from that life( in my case the body's check engine light didn'tcome on the wholedarn dashboard lit up). These days I've shifted that get it done attitude to being the best person I can to my family and friends and my church family, continue to make good memories with them ( and maintain my cool uncle status with my nieces,nephews and of late grand nieces and nephew's though admittedly those are still a bit too young to really know me as of yet) and make the best of whatever time the good Lord has decided I've got left here.
      I'm good however it goes,if I get more time than expected then that's good for the above mentioned reasons,if my remaining time is shorter we'll then I have a pretty good idea where I'm going and I'll get see my wife and others that have gone on ahead.

      cheaper in the long run all the way around. Who wants to be tearing up track to fix a bad section when you have It up and running.

    I've always loved the low frequency rumble of those EMD prime movers. Ever since I was a kid. I wish I were closer so I could come help out. A good friend of mine, who he and his son are big railfans, live up in Northern Ohio. I'll bet he'd love to come down and lend some muscle. Altthough you may have an issue with him bumping his head on things because he's freakishly tall, lol.
    If you ever decided to do some kind of stock offering or something i'd definitely buy in, I know you aren't going to, but I would if you did.

    be mindful of temperature and rail growth/shrinkage due to temperature. Keeping that in mind, pulling the rail off isn't a bad idea. For excepted track you only need one tie under the joint bar and one tie in the middle of the span. Best of luck. :)

    I think your idea to add ballast and retie that low spot is correct. Track work like that is always easier before you are moving cars daily.
    On the KLS&C, we had a low spot just west of Paw Paw. One wet year the water was just over the top of the rail. We had to crawl the trains through. The funny was many times I would see a muskrat sitting on top of the rail. When the train got close enough, the critter would dive into the water between the rails. It had dug under a rail so it could safely swim under water into the pond beside the tracks. Fun, but you don't need that action. Oh, the KLS&C never did what you are planning.
    So do it now before you have a muskrat laughing at your trains!

    Good idea to elevate that line... make it easy to replace ties...
    As far as weeds buy an orchard sprayer and hit those weeds with Amine 24d and glycophosphate for weeds like that 4 to 6 onces ofceach per gallon of water will do a good job and both are very safe...

    For the ETR fans. Can't afford you own East Terminal Railroad. There are a huge number of operating railroad museums. Consider joining one.

    Would like to see a simplified drawing of the track arrangement.Having trouble picturing what the railroad looks like as a whole.

      I know where the E.T.R, is and so maybe I can help you without getting called to the office and fired! LOL At the very top (north) is a two track mainline running east and west. A spur comes off of that main line headed south. on the west side is a number of additional spurs going to industrial buildings. to the west. The north / south E.T.R. main line is about a half mile long. Hopefully that helps you out some and keep me out of trouble as way!

    Father Son combination is brilliant and the jam on the bread is you’ve got a railroad 👍🏻 I’m sure you’ll find a way of raising funds without any sort legal ties 🤔 People just like helping good things 😄 the Narrowboat that janes built got a whole in his bottom lol 😆 and couldn’t afford the repair so he ask for a go fund me and raised the money no questions ask as he makes good videos on UA-cam 😄 I’m only saying Brian.     I would agree about removing those tie's and ballast removing the stumps. New ballast and ties doesn't hurt to have plus those stumps removed because I feel like those stumps can re-grow newer life and give you a bigger head ache in the future.

    I think installing a concrete trench and pipe under the tracks will aid in drainage. Don't want ballast washed away too easily.

    my bother was an engineer for the maine central railroad . he run from portland to st johnsbury vt the RY2 RUN up thru the white mountains . l went with him 4 or 5 times . and it scared me almost every time . long way down.

      Legendary line. Crawford notch trestle clinging to side of mountain! And through the Ball Signal diamond at Whitefield NH. Scenery as good as it gets west of Bartlett NH. Wish I tagged along with you then.

      @@dock_yard1149 the part that scared me the most was the first time going over frankenstein trestle my bother take me out side to walk way just before we got there . we had 6 units on the it the same time .

    LOVE THE TRANSIT.... yeah pull up the one rail and clean out all the mud and put in a horizontal drain on the center ....the fans on locomotives HOWL ... I like cutting up old rail cars...
    unless it s something that is REALLY an antique....Southern Pacific stuff is getting rare.
