Printers can really only physically print the detail of 300 “dots per inch”. You have to imagine it as literally printing the ink dots. Maybe there are some out there that are more advanced. But if you have a file at 600dpi you can easily double the size of the product for print without pixilation. I do most of my work in a sketchbook, scan it in at 1,200 dpi & have created prints & products well over double if not triple the size without “blurry” issues.

4k brand new scanner will out perform even the most high end scanner from only 3 years ago. The software advancements alone are insane.
On top of that, most people have different expectations.
Oh my god.. Kelsey, I know exactly who you’re talking about. I’m also local and yeah, dude is pretty chaotic. I’ve had good experiences with getting prints from him, but there are definitely areas where the service has fallen short before. Thanks for sharing an alternative.

@@KelseyRodriguezI’m a tattoo artist and I make prints of paintings and flash, which usually land around the $25 price point for an 11x14” print. They’re not meant to be high end products so I have let some of the printing errors slide (details in the corners and borders being cut off), but last year I was in the DeYoung Open 2023, and had prints of my piece made, and I was definitely disappointed with the quality relative to what I wanted to sell them for. Previously, Cain would make it up by including free scans or giving me the misprints for free, but I think moving forward I need to find a more professional giclee printer. Thanks for sharing your experience, you’re def not the only one who’s left disappointed.

I went to school for graphic design and feel the need to throw this info out there... A good print quality image's resolution for art should be 600 to 1200 dpi for most printing purposes. So if you're scanning or photographing work, that's a good starting point. Of course you can always scan higher for archival purposes and you can always reduce an images resolution for whatever application you need but you CAN'T (reliably) add resolution to a low resolution image.
Kelsey, I'm a retired art director. There are actually a few good service bureaus out there but not that many. No one is going to care as much about your art as you. Many of the professional artists I know have purchased their own scanners and printers so as to deliver quality work to their customers. I've purchased several quality scanners and printers over the years. I think it's best when you have total control over your processes and final product. Very sorry about your experience but I'm glad that you've found a solution. Your customers will be happier as well. Take care. Love your videos BTW.
It’s an honest mistake he should have put it through the quesadilla press before he inserted into the toaster. Just take it back to him and it should be a quick fix
I was thinking I might get better results by running stuff though my ice cream maker and then scanning via waffle maker?
Don't forget to adjust the settings on all the small kitchen applicances before yous start as well! Otherwise you might end up with lightly toasted instead of that beautiful burnt brown 👌

Making traditional artwork into files is actually really tricky. I do that for a couple of years now with my own art and had even a long talk with a professional photographer on the topic what is better, to scan or take pictures of artwork. We came to the conclusion that photography is theoretically better, if and only if you have a setup that allows you to take kind of the same shots all the time with the same professional lighting, so basically if you transform part of your office into a professional photographers studio. With a good scanner, it is possible to achieve really good results, but in my opinion at least a basic additional photo editing is a must with scans to make the colors look as natural as possible. Usually (depending on the scanner, Epson is really the best I tested yet), it is at least necessary to increase the contrast and make minor color tweaks.
From what I see, the person you paid to scan your artwork, does not seem to be an artist himself, otherwise he probably would have realized that the colors are way off due to the scanning process. As an artist and especially as an artist of the particular piece you would see the color changes even more because you have been spending hours to create this. So scanning or at least editing the scan by yourself will be a total game changer.

Professional does not equal quality, and this is something I talk with people a lot about. The word professional literally just means that someone makes money doing whatever it is they are doing. As soon as I took my first payment for writing a custom piece, I started labeling myself as a professional writer...because I was...it became my "profession" ...You can very much so be a NOVICE professional. He is absolutely a professional, but not an expert, and this is a valuable lesson to remember when you are seeking people. It's a total bummer, but in the future perhaps you will do a test with the professional you go to and vet them a bit. It is absolutely important to vet professionals you are going to use for any service. Sorry you learned it this way though! I am EXTREMELY jealous of your scanner 🤭 (I bought a much lesser version of that but it works great for my level of work right now). 💖 I don't think you got ripped off, I think you didn't do due diligence (he may think he's doing a good enough job, and perhaps needs to know he's not). Your scans are looking great now though!
I’m fuming on your behalf Kelsey - I can’t so relate to how infuriating it is dealing with these “pros”. It’s so worth doing or investing in doing it yourself if possible - you get the quality standard you choose.
And btw - your paintings are STUNNING - which pisses me off all the more, it’s an injustice butchering the scans on quality work like that

I have that same scanner, only the earlier version. I love it! I still spend a lot of time cleaning it up after, removing stray hairs, etc. to make it perfect. Now that you have this awesome, commercial-level scanner, you could offer your services to other artists to scan their work and possibly make back some of your cost.
I’m guessing that a scanner/printer is a necessary tool for when you want to sell prints of your work directly from your online art store. Can you tell me if the demand by the people 13:25 who visit your online store for digital prints of your artwork is so great, that spending $10,000 is justifiable?
I know that the printer you have did not cost $10,000, but to be able to make larger prints, the cost of the printer rises exponentially.
Do so many people buy prints that such a cost can be justified?

It's definitely a matter of different equipment. Just because someone else has the ability and professional level equipment does not mean they keep up with getting new equipment regularly. If his audience is cool with the quality (they may have different standards than you) then there is no reason for him to buy the latest and greatest machine each year to keep up. Sounds to me like he definitely needs an upgrade and to be more upfront with output vs. client need/expectations. Think of cameras - there were world renowned photographers using 3MP cameras not too long ago...and now we can shoot in 4k, wirelessly transfer images and videos, and store huge files on mini SD cards. They were still professional 10 years ago and still charged 2k for weddings - just better equipment now would make their work look dull.
You could also consider the cost/benefit of offering the improved quality - were people less likely to purchase from you with his scans vs these other scans? In taking on this part of the task are you now putting more labor dollars and cost of equipment in than having someone else to do it at a lower dpi? If the human eye cannot detect the level of dpi detail, is it necessary to have that level?

Your space is so beautiful and looks cozy to work in. I've really been struggling with hating my space and how dark it is. I almost don't get any sunlight here.
I know it might be more expensive, but don't places like OfficeMax, Office Depot, FedEx Office, etc. scan prints and send them to a file for you? You can take your laptop or tablet with you and have them scan 1 artwork and review the quality, then if you like it, they'll do the rest.

Sorry to hear that happened to you, Kelsey! But good on you on figuring it out and finding a great scanner for your work. If you need to get images of larger works that don't fit in the scanner, I can recommend some photographers here.

This happened to me a few years ago at a very well known print shop at my city as well.
More often than not whoever is operating the machine doesn't know what you are looking for in your scans unless you stay and watch them do it and have them do it more than once if needed so.
It also happens that in my particular case, these people were more used to scan blueprints for architecture than anything else and they were just incredibly lazy at the moment of setting up the scanner to scan something other than blue prints.
I went back to have them redo the work to look a bit closer to what I was looking for, but ultimately they were so unwilling to do their job right that I bought my own scanner, not a professional one but a commercial domestic one and got the results I was looking for by myself as well.
That difference is crazy. Thanks for sharing...yes never assume, ask for references if you have to. :)
I'm wondering if maybe he's using an all in one printer, scanner, copier. scanning lower res for speed, and throwing the images through an upscaler. it could explain the 'mushiness' of the texture as it blends the pixels of a low res image. or is it possible he photographing rather than scanning? lot's of ways this could happen I guess. and likely most friends and family I know or even a casual buyer at a farmers market, local craft market wouldn't find any issue with the results, where as artists and art collectors have more descerning eyes.

As a traditional artist a good scanner is a must, and epson truly is the best!
Many artists take photos of their work with a good lighting setup, a DSLR, and 4-6 shots - works with huge paintings, and very easy to use Photoshop or a similar program to stitch together the tiled image. You essentially use the camera at a consistent angle to DIY the scanning process.
It sucks you paid for scans that weren't the high quality you expected, but unfortunately it's up to us to preview and double-check these things. I'm glad the scanner worked out, though!

So I used to work at a printshop as a graphic designer art scanner lady, and as much as it pains my very soul to admit it, this story sounds soooo much like instances I’ve run into as well 😞. When I worked there, I did my very best to help the artists, cause I’m one too, but the culture of a lot of print shops is like this. It’s a mixture of a bunch of things, and most of the time the owners or employees aren’t being malicious, but stuff like that happens a lot. It pains me hear the horrors of sub-par printshop experiences 🙄 Anyway, I feel you and I’m glad you have a heavenly scanner now ❤😂
Maybe the next time make a list of what you want and don’t hesitate to ask for samples. Or you could take someone with you. It helps. I know it feels intimidating and guilty to ask a lot of questions but do it. My printer guy messed up my card game prototype. Although they were rough prototypes but I had to reprint them. I’m also sorry what happened to you but hope this helps if you’re gonna make any kind of physical products in the future.
Sounds more like fine art scanning isn't really in his wheelhouse, and he may not even realize it. Glad you found a solution that works for you. Alternately, if you know photography and lighting, you can get good results without having to go into debt for a scanner like that.

I know you probably are not interested in this biz idea on the long run, but what if you offer scanning other artists works with your super machine for a limited time to recover the money you lost on that person? :c
I have a question do the lower print costs mean lower quality of the print or like did you find a place that does it for cheaper but the same quality?
cheaper but the same quality! actually a lot happier with the different paper options the new manufacturer offers!

In the comparison images you showed the one that the guy scanned and I thought "that looks okay" then you showed your scan and was like "okay yeah that other one was trash!" the first scan was so washed out... I'm not a painter but owning a scanner was one of the first things I invested in as an adult for my art!

Sorry to hear of your troubles. Photographing artwork has very little to do with a photographers typical skill set. Its wonderful that your scanner is doing the job yet for anyone needing to do this on a budget: use soft boxes at 45 degree angles, create a black box or tent around the art work to eliminate glare, and light reflection and use a timed shutter and tripod to eliminate camera shake. Low ISO 100 to 200, 5.6 to 8 ish f stops, and long exposures up to .5 seconds. Also be ready to tweek a bit. You will find your sweet spot, make notes and repeat on your next shoot.
"Tepid dog shit" lol. It can't hurt to talk to Kane and tell him what happened. He might refund you and you'll feel good for standing up for yourself. All he can do is say no. I wish I was able to stand up for myself better earlier. It helped to do it in smaller situations first.
It might be worth checking with a professional printer, for those who can't afford a scanner, that works with architecs. I'm a landscape designer and scanned stuff at FedEx office or office store. It cost a lot. I would need full size (24" x 26") prints to show clients. The professional printer would always get it right or make it right. They had limited hours but were always fabulous. Plus if they didn't feel comfortable doing something get wouldn't bullshit me. Good luck.

I don’t do much watercolor so I haven’t yet, no!
A few things about scanners... A $300 scanner is almost as good as a $3,600 scanner. I think you scammed yourself out of $3,300!
Second, oil paintings and watercolors don't scan well. The light is too close to the pigment and actually goes through it differently than the way the eye sees it. It is much better to get a high resolution camera and take photos than scan. I only scan paintings smaller than 12" for this reason. I suggest getting a good camera and taking your own photos.
Third, some colors in oil and watercolors are difficult to match when scanning. Yellow ochre and other earth tones are an example. One always needs to do color correction in photoshop to fix these colors no matter how good your scanner is. It is better to spend $3,000 on a color correct monitor than on a scanner.
To do good color correction and fix scans you really need to have many of the same skills as an artist in seeing and matching color. You need to understand additive color theory and subtractive color theory to get the colors right between the artwork and the computer monitor.
So maybe don't be so hard on your 'scammer'. I would also return your $3,600 scanner and buy a $300 one. Then use the $3,300 to buy a 60mp camera.
I guess you missed the entire second half of the video where she scanned an oil painting that contains what looks like yellow ochre and the scan came out amazing? Not sure how but apparently you did. So maybe your $300 scanner can't scan oil paintings well, and maybe back in the day $3,600 scanners couldn't scan oil paintings or yellow ochre well, but today's $3600 scanner can scan them just fine. And then you ended your erroneous diatribe with "don't be hard on her scammer" when she literally posted pictures of the crappy scans he gave her vs the amazing scans she was able to produce in a few minutes with her scanner. It's like you were so eager to mansplain and tell her she was wrong that you didn't even bother to watch the video. Bless UA-camrs that have to deal with this kind of insanity masquerading as experience.
You bought a fantastic scanner and it's great but you can also achieve professional scan with some less expensive scanners.
So, listening to this, you started this not really having a clear idea of what you wanted, or how. So you went to a professional and didn't like them, you now have an opinion on what you want and need, and did it better. Good for you on not suffering sub par products for your customers.
Btw, i think you should mention the place to prevent the rest of us getting screwed. But then again, i dunno what percentage of your viewers live at the bay.
so now that you have these quality scans- who is printing them? like are you personally printing them? Or having them printed from a different facility?

HEY! probably won't get a reply but do you print your scans on a special print paper?[what is it?] (I know nothing about prints and art)
I outsource my prints to a company called Finer Works and they use a giclee printing process and print my art on Hahnemühle Bamboo Base Eco Paper, which has a velvet finish!
This is super handy info as I'm in the process of finishing artworks ready for reproduction ❤
You can tell the guy you can now scan artworks for him with higher quality and you are open to working with him for a price.
Or you can open your own scanning shop, and accept scanning jobs direct or they can ship paintings to you.
And I would only say you got scammed if he promised a certain level of quality, but you can now provide better service having experienced the mistake you both went through.
You can give samples now, and say you can scan 90% accuracy for matte paintings, and 75% for glossy.
Your experience bought you something valuable, but yeah sometimes weve got to thanos is out and do it ourselves.
The way you're describing distortions in his scans and how the canvas texture was removed - IMO kinda sounds like he used an AI upscaler, and not a good one too
I started in graphic design in the 1990's and drum scanners used to be prevalent. Every studio had one or had easy access to one. The downside of digital transformation is a lot of these machines got made redundant.
Moreover, slightly off-topic, with AI generated images now flooding the marketplace, I now treat digital prints with suspicion (or just avoid them altogether). I feel that freelance artists/illustrators could do a lot worse than up skill and get into a traditional printmaking discipline. AI can't complete with that.
I have been running into this issue so much. I still haven't found a reputable place in my area to get scans of my artwork done. I am beyond frustrated. Would you be willing to share what company you're using to get prints made? I would love to get that scanner. Someday. 😍 Thank you as always for sharing.

Sorry you got ripped off! May I ask how much you pay for such a scan then? (feel free to give an average) I have no idea what it costs. (I wouldn't pay more than 10 dollars or so lol. After all it's just a quick scan right?)
Your scanner looks AMAZEBALLS! Hope you get a lot of good use out of it! Also, how about sending him an email and comparing your own scan to the one he did and asking him why his quality is so much worse than yours? (Maybe not as agressively as I'm wording it.) But I think it might be good just informing him that he needs to up his game.

Haha! When you put his scan up, I looked it up and down and was like “okay, I’m ready! Show me your scan!” Before your scan even finished fading in I was like, “welp, yeah that’s a fuck ton better! not scammed. to me what you are describing is just sub-standard work or the work not meeting your expectations, he obviously is professional has a shop been running a while - a scam would have been he took your money and left you with no art and his shop disappeared in my eyes. to some level he's decent enough - it just doesn't match what your are expecting. so you should go elsewhere, shop around . for some his skill level is probably as much as they need. this is a good lesson on why to shop around and probably a better way to describe this, scam seems a little too dramatic for me. another thing it sounds like is someone who might have learnt his trade a long time ago - then tech and home scanning machines (like you described) have all moved on - and he hasn't progressed his skill or refreshed his equipment. - good example why you should always be learning and growing as a business - or you loose customers. just my thoughts on this anyways. and don't be disappointed in yourself! you haven't stood your business still like he sounds like he has, you are progressing and looking for better all that happened is you just lost out a couple of decent scans - but if you hadn't - would you have bought the new equipment the scanner !
Calling yourself a professional and not providing professional quality is wrongful deception in my opinion.
@@bedheadacademic hmm, I can see what you mean, but you have to remember that everyone’s opinions and expectations on what level they call professional is different, he has provided a service - it might be lower than expected and it might be he used outdated equipment , but he has provided a service - he has regular customers - his shop has business by the sounds of things, so he must be good enough for most.. and it’s perfectly ok if when you go to use a service that you decide that it isn’t good enough for you because their are other options you don’t have to carry on using it you can look for alternatives.
A good thing to do is check what service is provided, look at examples of work, know what you are wanting, get quotes and comparisons and check when work is done the service you asked for and were promised is what you got.
To me this isn’t a scam, I agree it isn’t great service, but it just isn’t something I can except is a scam- if he took her money and ran or if he stole her art work etc that would be a scam for me. For me This fall s in the category of it is just not great service.
Think of Professional as a spectrum. What Kelsey can create with the new scan machine is towards the top of that spectrum what the guy in the shop created was more towards the bottom of it. So he’s still a professional - just not meeting requirements for her needs as a professional artist.

Usually the "professional" way is a completely lit photoshoot, like a model sitting on a stool. The picture used for printing would be head on with a tripod and full bright lighting just enough to NOT reflect off gloss. You made a great purchase for indie scanning/digitizing, but you're probably going to continue getting some glare spots from the light being so close. Just food for thought since that scanner is two times my mortgage LOL
sorry this happened to you. I do think the lesson here is getting some samples before you agree to have someone do something. I.e. before you pay, depending on the rate.
Although this guy may feel he does professional work, but he may be naive to the level that most consider "professional."
Then again, it could have been he decided to half-ass your stuff, or he does more professional work for other kinds of scans? I dunno. I still would want samples before paying or some kind of money-back guarantee in writing,

Everyone sees things a bit differently so what looks good to him will probably look different to you! Remember the "is this dress blue and black or white and gold" image sent around back in 2015, that was fun. By the way Kelsey, what colours are the dress to you?
If I were that person I would have given you the option of receiving just the original unretouched scanned version and then a version of any retouching or fixing like getting rid of the hairs and dust. That way you could be the judge of what looks best and do your own colour retouches of the one that had the dust and hairs already removed. Colour correction is trickier...everyone sees colours a bit differently, everyone's RGB computer screens shows colour a bit differently, everyone's lighting is different, everyone's home CMYK printer is a bit different...every print shops printed proofs and final prints are going to look different from every other print shops goods.
Whatever printer you decide to go to, think about going with the intention to create a relationship with them long term. If you are going with a local company ask if they would offer you a tour where you could ask questions. You should feel comfortable working with them and it shouldn't feel like a big rush to get you out of there, and they should definitely ask you if you have any concerns or questions throughout that process. This is when you could ask them how they get their final prints to match the printed proof they provide you with to sign off. Do they have custom montior callibration that they can provide you with for when you are doing colour correcting at home? If that isn't a thing it should be, I'd be interested to know! Do they create print to order giclee prints using colour-fast fade proof inks?
Make sure your print company contact / tour guide understands that details matter to you and colour accuracy matters to you. The print shops might have some examples side-by-side of printed proofs and the final press prints. That would help you to see examples of proofs next to the final printed pieces to give you an idea of the quality and accuracy with details and colours.
If you decide to max out that lava hot credit card again for a higher quality digital printer for home...I've seen other youtube artists who do their own printing and they sometimes have to do a bunch of test prints and then go back and adjust the colours in Photoshop and reprint on their own home printer so they can be sure the colours match as closely as possible with a side by side comparison to the original art piece. This is a lot of extra work and the ink cartridges alone must set them back a small forture as well, plus they're doing all their own shipping, but I find the shipping out their artwork orders to be kind of soothing and satisfying to watch, the whole ASMR of watching someone get stuff done is very soothing and satisfying.
I personally would prefer to start a relationship with a professional local printer company or two or three if you want to make sure you're going with the one that gives you the best customer service and most accurate and detailed prints, bonus if they take care of the packaging, shipping labels and shipping for you, definitely get some quotes like how much to ship out 1, 10, 25, 100 giclee prints to different addresses all over the world versus how much to ship to your address if you wanted to maybe do the packaging, shipping labels and shipping yourself if this would save you many dollars.
P.S. Kelsey, if you decide to do another video to deep dive print shops, and maybe a part 2 video to get more detailed into the packaging, shipping all the things, that would be something to put a poll out for maybe to see how many are interested in hearing your weigh in on your experience in those areas, maybe shed some light on the little known details, if that's something you'd like to share.

You cannot complain if you don't layout your expectations... including researching what kind of scanners they use.
I'm a professional photo editor of jewelry photos. Usually my clients ask a "professional photographer" to make photos and I edit this material. Again and again I teach people to accept photo material by looking through and zooming it ×2, ×3. And again and again I have photos with wrong focus point, noise, wrong light. Why do people ever pay for this? Only because of "professional camera"? But this type of camera doesn't make the person a photographer. Some of my clients can make better photos with their phones (of course with my instructions) and I edit them with better result.
sorry that happened to you, it sounds like he probably does not know enough about what he's doing to even know that he is plundering innocent people. If he deviates from what is promised in writing versus what he delivers you may still need to get your money back.
He's probably been doing it for a really long time and just never upgraded his gear. Technology has gotten so much better in so quickly. (not that this is an excuse, its just he probably doesn't even know how much better things have gotten.)
