Classic Matches, Thanks for providing this crucial World Cup qualifier between Holland and Graham Taylor's England-and a game certainly not short on controversy!
1:26:03 this is probably the worst ever positioning of a goalkeeper in the history of football, he’s standing outside of the far post giving koeman a shot at an empty net
1:26:05 Sometimes Seaman's positioning was mind-boggling. Great goalkeeper over the years, one of the true greats, but this is reminiscent of Nayim and Ronaldinho lobbing him from all sorts of positions.
In fairness Koeman's reputation proceeded him and Seaman's form for about 3 years was patchy compared to 91 when he should have been in the running for PFA player of the year. His positioning was awful though and he was my hero. The wall didn't need to be as big either but ultimately Taylor wasted so much potential in this squad.
I don't remember this match personally but I remember my dad talking about this game and how Ronald Koeman talked himself out of a red card then went on to score the opening goal
Cant blame Koeman ( who admitted later on he should have seen red) . A stronger ref would have given the correct card , or maybe he was paid off before the game anyway

Not having a habituated defence (why not Arsenal's?) and world-class full-backs cost us. Dorigo was excellent at club level and was a cracking free-kick specialist, but just kicking the ball back to the Dutch showed he felt out of his depth - he did have a tough job, but Ashley Cole / Walker, etc later showed the quality needed at WC level. I liked Parker, but he was equally mindless in possession at times. How Taylor couldn't also see that what we needed was a player up top, like Sheringham, from the outset to receive all those mindless booted balls, get them to stick, and then thread them through. Even Shearer couldn't do it in this game and was lost as a consequence. Sharpe was invisible unless conceding the ball, and Merse showed flashes of skill, but as with Waddle, there was never an end product for England in the must-win games. Seaman was a twunt and I never forgave him! I couldn't believe we weren't going to the USA despite supporting a team with the likes of Thomas and Palmer.

That said, the yellow card for Koeman was a farce and he certainly would have been sent off if this match had been played in the age of VAR. Even VAR would have gotten that right without question.

Very talented Roy. Injured a lot moved from Ajax to Foggia and Nottingham Forest. Was Coaching at Ajax but nowadays is known for political statements online.
Also, plenty of good midfield players to accompany Ince in midfield in the absence of Gazza. Wise, Batty and Sherwood. Maybe Batty pulled out of the squad but it seemed Taylor thought Palmer was the answer to everything.

That really was an awful England side. Carlton Palmer and Lee Sharpe in a 3 man midfield? Carlton always gave 110%, but lacked quality and technical ability at this level. Lee Sharpe, just wasnt all that great (overrated and overhyped at that time), and certainly wasn't a 'worker'. Lots of long balls and hoofing it forward. Thank god our game in England has massively improved. In terms of skill, technique, and keeping possesion, our players nowadays match other nations.
Most of that team wouldn't get in the current England side. I would only have Adams and Seaman in it. I would exclude Shearer because of Harry Kane and there's only enough room for one in my side.
hahaha what a joke. nowadays english players are frail headless chicken running around. overrated overhyped and just weak. they would die playing strong teams like these.@@michaelmoores2654
Taylor was an awful manager at this level. Shearer was unfit and Merson playing terribly. Taylor should have gone for Hateley and Ian Wright for this game it would have gotten a result, they were both in scintillating form.
Weird team. Taylor could've given himself a much better chance this night had he opted to bring back the likes of Chris Waddle and Peter Beardsley. Also McManaman was starting to blossom and probably would've already been worth a cap. A lot of players let him down on the night, Sharpe and Shearer spring to mind. Unlucky for Merson not to at least score one. RIP Graham Taylor, truly a lovely man.
Looking bk have mixed feelings bout Taylor. On one hand he was Very Unlucky he didn't have Gazza to pick. Ferdinand was actually the top striker at time not shearer n was injured. England actually played well here n was surprised that this was prob Mersons best game...( Incredible he was a drunk n played like THAT) But his selections of Palmer, Sharpe, Sinton, Alvin Martin, webb, Palister...dorigo. Geoff Thomas! N many more..Even parker.. Leaving out flair players Beardsley, Waddle and Le tissues..If not Nigel Clough? Merson shud have been used more in place of injured Gazza.
@@ryang790 never remembered Alvin Martin picked by Taylor, he went to Mexico 86 but never remembered him getting picked for England again after Bobby Robson

@ryang790 I had a check and you are wrong....Martins last appearance for England was at Mexico 86 against Paraguay, you can check yourself if you think I'm mistaken...Taylor never called up Martin whatsoever
During this era, shud have gone for a 3-2-3-2.....Seamen,.Walker...Adams.Pearce.. Adams n walker can defend set pieces n Walker with his pace ( Palister was slow ) can cover....Then id have Ince n Platt in front protecting them. They can play on the ball so it would have given us extra men in midfield.. Then Merson, Gazza, Waddle.. Behind front two of Beardsley n Le Tissuer. I know Gazza was injured alot so u cud put Merson or le Tissuer in Gazzas position or Right midfield , With The extra spot up front going to Ferdinand , shearer or Wright. You need invention at that level , not Sinton, Palmer, Webb, Sharpe, etc..ughr...THIS team wudnt give the ball away either. Barnes had lost his pace then, so I'd have Stevie Mac as sub AND the Rest of the Arsenal defenders as back up.

Maybe he was given a large sum of money be someone. It's crazy that he threw his career away to stop England going to the world cup.
Legitimate Netherlands goal chalked off in the first half, and the English still moan about the Koeman red...
49:08 So if that's true he was sacked for not helping England
Roy was superb. What happened to his career?
Very talented Roy. Injured a lot moved from Ajax to Foggia and Nottingham Forest. Was Coaching at Ajax but nowadays is known for political statements online.
Absolutely. Loved this era for those players sometimes forgotten.
Much more open play than modern game.
Also, plenty of good midfield players to accompany Ince in midfield in the absence of Gazza. Wise, Batty and Sherwood. Maybe Batty pulled out of the squad but it seemed Taylor thought Palmer was the answer to everything.
This is incredible. Thank you. Google translate really widens the conversation.
ذكرتني بالزمن الجميل ... فعلا كانت من نوادر التلفزيون السعودي نقل هذه المباراة التاريخيه على الهواء مباشره
Carlton Palmer was about as much use as a handbrake on the Titanic.
Andy Sinton
Apakah bosman itu adalah pemain yg dinamakan aturan bosman ?
Palmer has been around for a while..
Intel i486 DX2 able to run windows 11?
Dennis Bergkamp, legend.
The Netherlands were clearly the better team.
Yeeesh. Brian Moore would've saved that free kick
“Do I not like that!”
Crazy that only 5 subs sat on the bench
What was seaman doing
Dorigo ?
Taylor was an awful manager at this level. Shearer was unfit and Merson playing terribly. Taylor should have gone for Hateley and Ian Wright for this game it would have gotten a result, they were both in scintillating form.
1:59:42 well said Graham 👏👏
Carlton Palmer those were the days 😂
"CARLTON! CARLTON!"
A Inglaterra pegou o grupo da morte aí...mas acho que dava pra ter pego a segunda vaga do grupo...
Holland And Poland who qualified
Holland and Norway qualified from that group.
The PGMOL wanted the referee from this match to join the premier league this season but apparently he was too good 🤔
Looking bk have mixed feelings bout Taylor.
@@jonblazeinc Yep. He was bloody called up for a game here n there. Jason Wilcox was another that got more England caps at time than genius Matt Le Tissier
@ryang790 I had a check and you are wrong....Martins last appearance for England was at Mexico 86 against Paraguay, you can check yourself if you think I'm mistaken...Taylor never called up Martin whatsoever
Carlton Palmer was about as much use as a snooze button on a smoke alarm.
@@ryang790 perhaps you're thinking of Gordan Cowans?
Some terrible international players in that england team, is anyone surprised poor Graham Taylor failed? Merson, Sharpe, Palmer, good god.

Bergkamp world class
To be fair to Holland disallowed goal was onside.
Just not good enough.
England was not in USA 1994.
Ince booked for charging down a free kick that Wouters done for an England free kick when a red card for keoman was not shown. Bent ref or what ?
Should’ve played the Arsenal back 4
thanks for upload Shearer was awful sorry but Seaman to blame for both goals
I forgot that we only needed a draw because of goal difference. If koeman was sent off we would have easily got the draw and gone to the World Cup. Graham Taylor was the most unlucky England manager
49:08 Unlucky?
_Ooh my goodness. He wasn’t offside. I must confess. We had the luck of a flag there, that’s for sure. Why can have no complaints there_ - English TV commentary
@@drfibonacci7570 Yes Taylor had zero luck in the qualifyers. onside goals were given offside every other week back then. Koeman assaulting platt, not getting sent off and scoring 5 minutes later was what saw Holland go to USA instead of England.
@@Ayoung2028
Zero luck? More like zero memory!
1:22:45 _Well, the Dutch were robbed in the first half when Rijkaard goal was disallowed. England robbed of something there._
@@drfibonacci7570 sorry, I thought you knew a bit about Graham Taylor’s reign as England manager but from that comment you clearly don’t, I’ll have to leave the conversation now
@@Ayoung2028 If he had luck in the first half, the amount of luck he had was non-zero. So what you're saying is not correct.
Feel free to leave the conversation though.
Don't know why we went all out for a win when a draw would probably have been enough.
Had England won, they were virtually qualified given their last game was against San Marino.
@@kennethmennie5699 Yes, that's right, a win and we were all but there. A draw though, would have left us needing to score at least 5, 6 or possibly 7 against San Marino and I think we would have done it. I think we missed our big chance though when we failed to beat the Dutch at Wembley, having been 2-0 up at one point.
Playing for a draw seems more dangerous than going out for a win. Surely go out to win every game?
Where was Barnes and walker ?
Barnes injured and Walker never picked again after the horror showing against Norway few games before
@@jonblazeinc so Walker had one very bad game and was never picked after that ?
@kenshiro7960 not one bad game , he had a mare in the Holland game at Wembley and away at Poland too, probably affected by his nightmare move to Sampdoria at the time. But to answer your question I think the Oslo defeat was Walker last ever game for England
@@jonblazeinc damn
Wonder if we qualified if he could have made amends but guess we will never know
Thanks
@@kenshiro7960 tbh it wasn't down to Walkers poor form , damage was done by Taylor's selections as well as bad luck with key injuries. I was a fan of Walker but I doubt we would have qualified for USA 94 even if he played a blinder throughout the qualifications
It's incredible how much better football players are today. A top PL team today like Arsenal or City would beat this England team 15-0
I don't know. But I know that in general, national football back then was at a higher level than now.
Can’t compare eras lol
@@Farhadmoh ofc. You can?
@@kera9095was it hell, these fine tune athletes these days have killed the game. mind numbingly too good and boring
Lee Sharpe had an awful game… Koeman would have been sent off under VAR. Merson hit the post 2x
Holland had a clear goal disallowed for no reason....
Norway come from nowwhrre was realy the surprise of the group so england was kicked out of world cup.
seasman was poor with 2 goals ,, why take off Merson,,, Taylor was a poor manager ,,,,, oh for Terry Venables ...Ian wright had pace never given a real chance
Taylor was absolutely not a poor manager.
@@Tom85AVFC for England he was
i can't believe how poor quality this match is, so many bad passes. It wasn't until holland got stam/davids/seedorf did they become world class. Now i understand why they weren't fancied at the 94 wc.
I remember reading in, IIRC, the Washington Post, that American officials were happy England didn't qualify because of fears wrt hooligans.
Can we not keep hold of the ball
