It's early Saturday morning, and my eyes are filled with tears listening to this song. Everyone is in bed sleeping, thank God. I am the Dad and head of my family, and it wouldn't do to have my wife or any of my children walk in on me and see me upset. I am not really upset. I just started thinking about my mom. She passed away eleven years ago and I am thinking of her. Thank you to whomever posted this song. I have to go wash my face now. ❤
It's been over 35 years since I last heard this song. The Irish Rovers were in Red Deer in 1976, for the Westerner Days grandstand show. This is one of the songs they sang, and I'm glad I could hear it again.
Just listened to this again for the... goodness knows how many times now, and yet again it had me close to tears remembering both my amazing grandmothers, now sadly no longer here. I’ll say it again, thanks for posting and thank you Irish Rovers for composing and singing it so beautifully 😊😥 #bittersweet
I came back to this song today, remembering how it made me feel the first time I had been listening to it at 3 am when i thought about my Nana and began balling my eyes out. We were pretty close when she passed in 2011, a hard veteran of life at 91.
Jimmy was too funny!!! But Will always has a sense a humour and now it has passed down to George who is the legacy to keep the irish rover roving!!!!! I heard Will Millar as a kid and has always stuck to me now im seeing more and more Will in George which to me is always a pleasure to see in all song writer and artists
I discovered this unknown gem while looking for a different song. Glad I did. We had a double-LP of the Irish Rovers, but this song wasn't on it. They were something else again.
My friends the Irish Rovers and best friend back in Sydenhan ,N.Ireland Jimmy Ferguson ,we bit overweight here , sadly Jimmy passed away about 10 years ago only in his 50.s.
Grandmother's Old Rocking Chair Well I courted your old gran, me son, a long, long time ago. And it's said that she was the fairest of them all, And I told her that I loved her and I wanted her for mine and I wrote it all along the factory wall.
Now she gave me six fine sons and your father, he was one. and she kept our home together and a favorite she had none.
But the war, it cut the family down to less than half its size. and I watched your grandma aging right before me very eyes.
She was bunny, she was fair and we made a lovely pair. I'd give all the world to see her in the old rocking chair.
Now an angel called on us one night to take your gran away and I just had time to comb and plait her hair.
And then the lonely times did face me, and it nearly broke me heart, nobody else could fill that rocking chair
She was bunny, she was fair and we made a lovely pair. I'd give all the world to see her in the old rocking chair.
So now I climb the stairs at night by the flicker of candlelight and I look upon me shadow on the wall and I can still remember when that shadow once was two and beside me stood the fairest of them all
So now I lay me down to sleep, I ? for my sweet las. Oh I wish that things were like they used to be And I hope your grandma hears me voice and tells the Lord above to send an angel down to call on me
She was bunny, she was fair and we made a lovely pair. I'd give all the world to see her in the old rocking chair.

All of my grandparents had passed away by the time I came along. I didn't realize until I was adult and a Grandma myself, what I had missed out on. Been a long time since I've heard this song. Thanks for posting it!!
Thank you for posting. The first time I heard this song was in 1979, broadcasted on tv, when they did a concert in Vancouver. It has been one of my favorite songs ever since.
John, this is so wonderful, and I thank you for sharing it. I just subbed. In the Eighties, we used to go and hear the Irish Rovers (in concert), when they'd come to the Rialto Theater, in Joliet, Illinois. GREAT! God bless, Brother Charlie
I didn't really know my grandmothers. I met them briefly. One passed away from old age and the other from a place collision in mid air. But really do miss my Mom. She was my best friend.
I remember sitting at my grandfather’s knee as he played and sang this on guitar. I thought I’d lost the song forever as I had the hardest time finding it with the snippets of lyrics I could remember. Wouldn’t you know, as soon as the Rovers started, they all came rushing back. Thank you so much for posting
Both of my grandmothers are now long gone sadly, although I still have my mum and dad alive and well 😊. Can remember so well both of them in their chairs (not rocking chairs though!) in their living rooms, and many happy memories. Love and miss you both Grandmum and Nanna. So, thank you for posting this, don’t mind admitting it brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it 😥- any idea of the year this was filmed? Thank you again 😊
@madmo32 10,000 Irish men dies in WW2 fighting with Irish regiments in the British Army. I was stating a fact, nothing more. My facts are right. 388,000 British people died during WW2, including civilians in our bombed cities. WW1 947,000 British people lost their lives, don't know how many Irish. Anyway, great song, I used to sing it 33 years ago when i was a kid.
@465coleman Have you/is there/could you send any details of chords or sheet music available for this song. It has very poignant memories for me. I remember it as the the B-side to matchstalk men and my late grandma used to play it on her organ, she used to tell me it was written for her when I was 5. Thank you
This is an old Northern English song made famous by Brian and Michael. The song was the "B" side of Matchstalk men and matchstalk cats and dogs. "Wrote it all along the gasworks wall" and "The war it cut the family down to more than half it's size" suggests the circa of the song too. Not many Irish lost their lives during the World War 2 as they stayed nuteral throughout it.
@painnneck I have Irish relations, I think everyone does...your location says USA but you are Irish, when did you move away? I have had many good holidays over there in ireland...
@RobbieTyler1 um dude they look like Irish men of their age. Nothing sterotyped about it. None of them were/are exactly young so it was pretty normal for them to dress the way they did considering when they grew up. By the way I am Irish and its not them that annoys me. Long live The Rovers and good old tunes like these.

I just love them.. 2020 I still consider them as my favourite band...
I always loved Jimmy's joke at 0:43. Sometimes he'd add, "We had four fathers, though."

I wish he had just one last song in him before his passing. Love these guys so much.
Had another watch/listen today as it’s 20 years to the very day my Grandmum sadly left us. Had me in tears. Beautiful and very emotional song.

They sang a good song about a "granny" and a reindeer. :)
Sadly, they don't write them like that anymore.
And not an eye was left dry
