Michael Stephen Portnoy is an American musician who is primarily known as the drummer, backing vocalist, and co-founder of the progressive metal band Dream Theater. In September 2010, Portnoy announced his departure from Dream Theater after 25 years, with Mike Mangini taking his place as drummer of the band.
Nickelback is a Canadian rock band formed in 1995 in Hanna, Alberta. It is composed of lead guitarist and lead vocalist Chad Kroeger, rhythm guitarist/keyboardist/backing vocalist Ryan Peake, bassist Mike Kroeger, and drummer Daniel Adair. It went through several drummer changes between 1995 and 2005

There are a couple of reasons Nickelback are disliked by most rock/metal fans. One is Chad's ego, and the other is that most people have only ever heard the radio-friendly singles they put out, but honestly, they have some great songs on their albums and they're way heavier than people expect.

That's bullshit. They are hated because a deliberate campaign has been launched against them in the music press: Many editors believe that their job is not just to tell people about music, but also to control musical trends according to their taste. I heard a story, for example, that one of the young journalists of a famous music magazine wrote a positive review about one of the Nickelback albums, but the editor told him something like "we hate Nickelback in our magazine, so rewrite it."
"One is Chad's ego"
- I don't know Chad and I doubt you do either, but I've never heard anything terrible in the press about Chad's personality. On the other hand, there are famous assholes in rock music, like Dave Mustaine, Axl Rose or Gene Simmons, for example, and this reputation of theirs doesn't make their bands hated at all. So you're wrong here.
@@SokolRock I don't read the music press and I don't know anybody else who reads the music press, so any deliberate campaign against them has never had any bearing on my opinion or the opinions of my friends, and yet almost everyone I know hates Nickelback. When the band come up in conversation, the two reasons people give me for hating them are 1) they're too commercial and only do ballads, and 2) Chad is a d**k.
