Air Lift 1000 Quick Review. Will Air Bags Work for Overlanding?

- Before we headed out on our last little overlanding trip, I decided last minute to install a quick fix to our Jeep's rear sag problem. These are the Air Lift 1000 air bags that we used for a 4-day trip in the Chiricahua Mountains
We used the Air Lift 1000 bags on the short 4-day trip to the Chiricahua Mountains. The trip was about 300-350miles, lots of forest service roads, the crazy terrible washboard road featured a couple of videos back, a really rough 4x4 trail, and some deep washouts, they held up totally fine. I took them back out after that trip because the parts for our lift arrived, but I would feel totally comfortable running this long-term for the type of trips that we typically find ourselves on. The price really can't be beat.
Seems like a good solution to me. I have a friend who uses them on his jeep to tow his trailer. I like the adjustability and the fact that they don't impede travel.
I've been running these on my 2 door JK for 2 years now. Numerous overlanding trips Colorado, MOAB, Point Sublime(Grand Canyon), all over ruff terrain. They have held up great! I just added a few weeks ago the AirLift WirelessOne, which keeps them at pressure easier than filling the valve and also for when you have a load or no load to adjust the lift. But just a tip for off-roaders if you plan on getting the WirelessOne, mount it INSIDE your Jeep. I did this from the start because a lot of people had complaints that the air compressor was collecting a lot of moisture(which makes sense).
I just need them for a Highway only jeep with a system installed. Great review think I'll use it long term with my lift since I'm strictly highway cruising

I'm considering this kind of setup with properly setup springs for normal load but have the air to help with a heavier load on a 4runner chopped into a austrailian style ute
That sounds like an awesome vehicle. I wish we could buy 79 series land cruisers here in the states
@@SonoranSpaceProgram so do I but since we can't I will have to build my own. I am also thinking a 1st gen tacoma with a 3rd gen 4runner rear locker and coil suspension. More flex than leaf springs but added load capacity
Great review Brien. I too live in the Old Pueblo and thinking seriously about getting these or paying a little extra to get the 1000 HD for my Ram 1500. I pull a travel trailer and do get some sag, even with the weight distribution hitch so it would be nice to have something to bring the rear of the truck up some. Hopefully install will go as smooth as yours did on your Jeep. I know I'll have to remove the fender skirting but not sure about the tires.

I wonder why the instructions say to install with the air stem facing downward I want mine facing upward and I noticed you did the same
Just ordered some for our JL because it sags with the trailer. Hopefully this rectifies the problem
They're awesome, and I think their main use case is for people hauling trailers, so i'm betting they will solve the sag for you! We have some OME heavy load coils being installed on Wed, but when we pick our trailer up next month I'm gonna use these as my secret weapon if we still see sag when the trailer is hooked on. How are you guys digging the new trailer? I'm looking forward to a walk-around video!
Brien Wankel we're loving it!!! Haven't gotten to take it out yet tho. Too hot and humid in Louisiana. We're going to take it on its maiden in a couple weeks. So far ll we've done is stocked it and set it up at home but no actual camping. Still fun to play with tho!!!
Hey Brien, what shop did you use for your spring upgade? Are you happy with the work and the stiffer springs?. I live in Tucson as well and am very interested in your opinion.

Thanks for watching! I had no need to do the same on the front since we have no additional weight up there, like a winch or heavy bumper. I'm betting it would be fine, but I have no experience with them in front
Did it make the ride stiff in the back? I want to mod a 2012 Prius to get some heavy load in the back (about 250-400 lbs in total), without sagging so my front lights won't point up. But I'm afraid the ride would be so stiff. What's more serious/reliable? Air suspensions? I'd go for the ViaAir and rear air suspensions to be able to have presets and control my suspension height with the push of a button.
The air bags appear to be a bit short for your setup. Glad to hear they still helped with the rear squat.
They get between the spring coils, the coil pitch, and lift from there. Per airlift’s website.
I know this is old but I'm confused. These are helper bags aren't they. Mine don't touch on the bottom unless big load. Watched another trucker add additional spacers so they touched and added lift...not what they are designed for. I cant possibly use them for lift due to space left unless heavy load.
You are correct, these are not to provide lift, their purpose is to 'stiffen' the coils, which will in turn reduce the amount of sag the vehicle experiences due to heavy loads.
I’m curious how well and if these will work on the front of my diesel that’s has a weight issue in the front.......
What is the perfect psi for it for street without load ?

Just had mine installed. Trash. When you flex the suspension, they get pulled up and down within the coils and leak out at the fitting. Sometimes they pull the line up then it gets kinked when they come back down. Either way they work for a few minutes then fail.

I am running an AEV 2.5 on my 17' JKUR Hard Rock. With RTT and gear I feel like I need to step up to some heavy duty coils in the rear. At the end of the video you mention upgrading coils on your AEV lift. What coils did you end up going with? How is the ride?
We swapped in the OME 2620 Heavy Load rear coils in and it's awesome now with the AEV DualSport Xt 2.5" lift. Unloaded we have about a 1" rake, our fridge and galley in the rear we have maybe close to a 3/4 - 1/2" rake, and with our turtleback expedition trailer attached she sits pretty much level. The ride is awesome, doesn't feel noticeably stiffer than before (maybe unloaded i'd possibly notice a small difference? we always have a galley in the back of the jeep, so we're never without a load in the rear)
Did you end up swapping springs? I too run a AEV 2.5" DUAL XT lift and I'm super heavy now but I don't "see" too much of any sag. Im SOMETIMES very heavy, and then often times I'm not. Airlift 1000 sounds like a perfect use it when need it/ not use when dont solution. My main question is, what bag size with this AEV lift?? they cant all be the same, i.e. stock VS lifted

I absolutely LOVE it. We swapped out the rear coils that come with the kit for some Old Man Emu 2620 heavy load coils since we have a galley in the back and we pull a trailer. Without the trailer attached we have about a 1" rake, and with the trailer attached the jeep sits totally level
Could you explain what you didn't like about those? It looks like it would greatly limit the suspension travel, how far do they compress?
The main thing i don't like about airbags is that they have the possibility of getting pinched and/or popped. If one were to pop or leak when we are out in the middle of nowhere, we'd be stuck with a really rough ride back with little to no wheel well clearance in the rear. Of course, this is all just a theoretical worry that I have. in the time that we used these airbags, i never had an issue, and they worked exceptionally.

Hi Kevin, If you have a stock Jeep Wrangler i suspect you'll want part number 60817. If you have any aftermarket suspension upgrades, you'll probably have to call a local 4x4 parts shop to make sure you get one that fits properly. I installed the 60817 kit on my '16 Rubicon when it was still stock and it was the correct fit
